I cannot agree enough with the whole body chemistry thing. I mostly stick to the same bottle, only ever changing when it becomes out of stock. With my usual scent, I often get asked what I'm wearing. Then I get people complaining to me that the bottle they purchased, they didn't like, despite it being the same thing. It kinda sucks because the bottle (converted to USD) costs about $100.
I’m a signature-scent kind of person, rotating between the same 2 or 3 perfumes for close to a decade now (coco Chanel, Dior’s Diorissimo or a similar jasmine fragrance and Tom Ford in the square bottle if they have a new release in my taste). But fragrance in relation to video games, I enjoy candles inspired by game characters and locales. Something cool about imagining what these people, creatures and places smell like 😊
My favourite thing I know about aftershave is that Old Spice was intended to be a women's fragrence. I'm not sure how much it's cultural, but that is one of the most masculine smells I can think of.
Really enjoyed this fragrance discussion, Tim! As someone into both gaming and fragrances, I noticed an interesting parallel - you talked about different fragrance brands, but have you explored specific perfumers' work? Just like how we follow game developers across different publishers, some perfumers have distinctive styles that show up across different houses. Speaking of industry insights, there's a fascinating book called "The Ghost Perfumer" by Gabe Oppenheimer that reveals the behind-the-scenes world of perfumery. It's about perfumers who, similar to some game developers, created iconic works but didn't get recognition for years - would be right up your alley given your industry experience! Since you mentioned enjoying mossy scents, I'd recommend checking out Rogue Perfumery's Mousse Illuminee. And if you're into green fragrances, both Zoologist King Cobra and Comme des Garcons Serpentine capture amazing verdant atmospheres.
I feel Tim probably anticipated he would talk more about how things relate to gaming, but got distracted and carried away talking about fragrances instead. Still, interesting stuff!
@@EtherealHaunting I noticed that too. One brief connection between indie and AAA games and fragrance prices and then just pure geek out mode. I love it.

Love these videos that you do, very educational. Since your chocolate video I've been really getting into dark chocolate. Every time I do my weekly shop I buy up most of my new favourite flavours of lindt dark chocolate (mint, orange, 70%, and waffle).
I love being in healthcare because fragrances are forbidden at the workplace, they give me pre-migraine, I start seeing flying balls of light and everything.
Huh I never thought about that but it makes sense. I remember when I was a kid I was travelling with my mom and her friend, and the latter had some really, really strong (and sweet) fragrance that actually made me sick. Who would've thought that something that is supposed to smell good can have that effect lol.
There's a chain of shops in the UK called Lush and they sell eco friendly bath bombs, bubble baths and perfumes amongst other smell related products. My wife loves their stuff, and on its own any one product smells good. But going into one of their shops, especially the less ventilated ones, is an almost instant smell related migraine. When I was younger strong perfumes and aftershaves would give me a niggly pain but man that shop is like someone sticking a nuke directly in my brain.
Do you have any suggestions for fragrances in open office floorplans where desks are packed together? I always end up using scentless aftershave / deodorant because I worry it would be distracting to people sitting next to me since I don't have a closed office room. Even with a low projection, the proximity between the desks is rather close.
I like scents from the 4711 line, as most of them are both lightly scented and low projection. If you want to explore other brands, look for reviews that call the fragrance a “skin scent”, which means it stays very close to the skin and barely projects at all.
I adore that Tim is talking about this! I collect historic scents. 4711, farina 1709, aqua d'parma. I really recommend hove. They're a perfumier in New Orleans that does smells that "evoke" the city. I love their Louise Quatorze. It smells like a smoky bele epoch saloon.
Thank you for this, it's a lot of helpful information. I was recently helping my niece pick out some fragrances, and came across one that I really liked - but I ended up not liking it after a half hour or so. I figured maybe they just weren't for me in general. I've now ordered some samples of Zoologist because they sound interesting to me. Hoping one of them works for my body chemistry.
I commented earlier but I’m so fascinated by the size of your collection, I can’t stop thinking about it lol I wanted to ask 1) if you ever find yourself running low on a specific fragrance, do you save it for collection purposes, run and get a replacement or let it run out and move on? 2) can you recognize a scent without looking at the label, kinda how you can with chocolate? 3) how do you organize your fragrance cabinet? By brand? By notes? By bottle shape?
You can use the word Fougere to describe grassy, mossy, ferny fragrances. Like Green Irish Tweed. Some other notes I appreciate in fragrances are vetiver (Haitian Vetiver, this is very refined and distinguished...think The Most Interesting Man in the World) and tobacco (odd because I LOATHE cigarettes but the earthy smell of non-smoked cigars makes me think of an old study or den...kind of liminal in some way).
this world of fragrances that Tim lives in, is a world I never lived in although I like the bazooka joe reference lol (terrible comics with the gum) something as a kid I thought was really cool, but was rare, was some magazines, or stickers (I think) or rare various products had scratch and sniff elements to them it definitely felt like a special feature when something included them also, as a kid in the 90s, some marker sets smelled amazing lol I really think there was a set of markers that were supposed to smell like things, I think mainly fruit (and like I think I remember a picture of an orange on one of the markers for example)
I love this cologne adidas had called “deep energy,” it’s been discontinued for like almost a decade but I love it so much I pay stupid prices on eBay to stock up😢. It has an amazing like Texas cedar, amber, musk fragrance with hints of orange , bergamot, and some lavender and apple
O a fellow frag-ger! Sauvage (bergamot notes) changed my life! I found Aqua di Gio did not last too long in the tropics. (the sillage was good though) I'm going to collect more once the finances get better. I've also appreciated the bottle design which affects my love of potion bottles design in video games. Try out some oud ( arabic woods) and misk ( musk) variants and you will enter a vast vast world of possibilities lol!
Hey Tim! Would you please detail narrative requirements? What I mean is, if I want to target a 40 hour rpg, how much dialog should be written? Is there a standard for pacing like 10 minutes play, 2 minutes dialog? Should there be a cap to how much optional "flavor" dialog is available? And any related insight you might have. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks. That was the team working with Buddha Jones again, the same ad agency we used with the first game. I attended some of the meetings for it, just to see the other pitch variants. There were some great ones, but this one was the best.
Tim have you tried any Oribe products? Silver Pearl and their signature shampoo are two of the greatest fragrances I've smelled, and have gotten me more compliments than anything else I've worn (Tobacco Vanille is a close third)
For me, probably the best fragrances I ever tried/had are MFK (I esp love A la Rose - homme). Expensive, but better than all the Tom Fords, Creed and others in that price range. Try it if you haven’t.
Hey Tim, I have a question. What are do you think the chances are of Temple of Elemental Evil ever getting a Steam release? I would love to play it, and I know it's available on GOG, but I just like getting Steam achievements and building a game collection that is all in one place. I would snap it up in a second if it ever gets a Steam release, but if you think that is very unlikely to happen, I might just go ahead and get it on GOG.
What Replica is that in the top left? Recently got Jazz Club and I love it. My most recent mini-obsession is Amore Caffe, the first gourmet fragrance i got for BF. It's not a beast mode though.
That's a nice one, only had a sampler of it but it fits the name perfectly. Didn't strike me as strong and projecting one though, but as you say - it's different on different skin.
I have a bottle from 2005 that still smells great, but I have one from four years ago that has changed. I think some of the "all-natural" ones change a bit over time (for better or worse), but keeping them out of sunlight and high heat helps too.
Hi, Tim Do you ever feel like games lost that element of "what if"? I noticed recently that playing some modern games I quickly get disappointed by the answer to that question, often even knowing the answer before asking it. Yet I keep asking it anyway. What if I use double jump here to climb up the building? What if I literally "throw that can" that I was asked to pick up?

Two thoughts from this. One, any chance you switched teams for a fling in Russia in the early 2000s? You and I have JUST had the SAME conversation I had with my older, gay son we adopted from Russia back in 2004. We were in Alta in the mall two days ago, and he went over the whole body chemistry test on yourself thing. Two, my wife wife is sensitive to most scents. She was okay with the CK Obession I wore in college. In Grad school, I got some Grey Flannel. I really liked it, both the scent and the joke about how it sounds professory. You can see where this is going. She had an allergic reaction to it and absolutely hates it. I sent this to my son and told him we need to watch it with Mom so he can see her reaction to you saying the words Grey Flannel. I also told him I think we found his bio dad. 😀
"Look, maybe I didn’t say every single little tiny syllable, no. But basically I said them, yeah." (Tim when talking about the price of his fragrances.)
"Expensive doesn't necessarily mean good." This can be a hard lesson to learn for some people, and some refuse to learn it.
A comment from an SCP anomaly...and Euclid class! I am honored and terrified.
I heard that in Walmart tire section.
Just because the tire is expensive, doesn't mean it's good in the Snow
True. Expensive fragrances are sometimes expensive because they are made out of rare materials and not because they are necessarily the best.
