@@318willrun I have 2 67 Coronets Im finally messing with. One is an RT, one is a 440 with a 318 it's locked up. I have a ratchet strap going from the crank pulley connected to the other Coronet. Happy 4th, hope you are having fun with the family.
I get what you’re saying. Most of the new wave of car building is entirely out of my price range. Restomods, blown LS’s. I am putting a 360 in to my old Demon to replace the 318, 3spd. I found an 833 tranny so it’ll cruise on the road better. But keeping the 360 simpler, no EFI or even the MDS electronics. But after having it since new in 72 I wanted it a little different but 90% streetable. But something that I can have fun with taking it to the track a few times a year. I watch your videos to see what I can do to my own car without big $$$. Good advice, always. Thanks Tim 👍
But most people don't get it and don't understand why you are pleased that you broke into the 13s. They see 1000 hp on every other UA-cam channel and think that is the norm and anyone with half a brain can easily get a measly 1000 hp. Most seem to have foreign made minivans that get 35 mpg, can beat any musclecar, and don't understand why you don't just buy a late model vehicle that tunes itself and is phone app compatible.
Agreed. I'm always trying to use what I have on hand or can get cheap to make my cars run well. I've had people tell me I need to buy new carb, new headers, new whatever. It bugs me because I know these parts are worth the work and can be made to perform. Also, I'm not made of money and parts are not cheap these days. Great video and great message!
Love this. I got a lot of hate for how I rebuilt my 318 in my pickup. I did the very definition of a " shade tree mechanic " would it run better if I had everything properly machined and forked out the cash? Most definitely! But you get much more of a sense of accomplishment if you do the work yourself, if every time it runs faster or runs better is because you tweaked it, not because you put a better carburetor on it or because you paid someone to tune it for you. It's all about having fun and learning.
Absolutely agree, were not all gone, if my 1987 Dodge with the 318 sends all 8 rods through the Block, I'll search junk yards and build another one.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Very good points, Tim! The lost art of test and tune is fading fast. You get a lot of different personalities in hotrodding, and it shows through in the car builds and performance of cars. It’s exciting to see competent people build and tune to the max with a combination. But there will always be the stubborn ones who won’t throw away their old favorite carburetor when it won’t take another rebuild. Brand new parts like your speedmaster heads are becoming more attractive when their prices are getting close to the same as having a pair of 915’s rebuilt. Then the magic can happen when the veteran tuner uses the new part and the old skills to optimize the harmony of new and old parts.
Thanks Joe! 100% agree! I am NOT against Trick Flow or anything else. But getting the most out of it regardless of what end of the spectrum one plays can still be fun and rewarding! But it's a fading art.
I reckon a guy could do some of both. Some tuning and some parts. I think what your describing is the joy of the journey and the creative problem solving. That said there is joy in being slammed back in your seat or breaking the tires a bit loose on a hard corner that comes with a certain amount of power. Yes it is an awesome achievement to go 13.9 with that set up in your Duster. But that doesbt mean its not also a blast to drive a car with say 500+ horsepower and some low gears. Both are awesome in different ways. 👊🏁
Absolutely, and I wished I would have pointed that out in the video that big horsepower is great. But tune the big power parts as well! The art doesn't change!!! Thanks for the post!
Hey Tim, funny how you mentioned some of the channels that I watch. I'm trying to learn everything I can starting from scratch. Doing the best with what I have is exactly what I'm about. Time I have. Unlimited funds, I don't. Glad to see you back. God bless
Exactly. Tuning now seems to involve a laptop. I am a pastor and have always been into Mopars and hotrods. I spend as much of my free time as I can in my shop at home helping the youth and anyone who needs help to work on their cars. Some of these kids have their first car and live in a single parent household. Helping and teaching them the basics on their stuff is a ministry for me. I have let them help me and observe building multiple engines. We have built carburetors, adjusted valves, swapped gear set. It is a good time for all and they feel fore confident and independent because of the experience.

I feel the same way. I have been working on my 1972 Duster every since I got it in 1972, but for a different reason. I have been trying to do something that everyone has said can't be done. I have put 2 transmissions in my car at the same time. One is a 1967(727) and a1972(904) from my old slant 6, I have to say that it has been my life's project. It gives me so much satisfaction knowing that I have never heard of anybody ever doing what I have done.
@@318willrun I understand and it is something I get a lot. It started as a way trying to get better gas mileage in 1976. I had no idea it was possible and there was no info on it. Everywhere I looked for help thought I was crazy. But to my satisfaction, I found a way to do it, with lots of failures along the way.
I totally agree! All most people do is swipe a credit card, then plug and play! As you previously implied "I'm not racing the other guy (per se) I'm racing myself, trying to find combinations that improve performance and dragstrip times. On a BUDGET". Money can't replace the feeling of finally getting it right, from time spent at hard work. Take care now!
Thank you!! I'm Soo sick of everyone throwing an LS in it, and buying parts as you said. I've built engines a long time, and I'm like Keith Black. If you need a turbo you can't build an engine. But yes your spot on! I was a kid with a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with 2.41 gears made it run 13s. Beat Alot of Fox bodies.
Great video! This is the problem I'm facing with my projects. There is plenty of advice to buy things that will make you go fast, but very little on how to make the best of what you have, or how to do stuff on your own if you don't have a local machinist or your own shop.
your not alone I'm also so done with opening up the pocket book to go fast, I have to come to the line that it will just be quick on the street and slow on the track, and I was telling my wife about a month ago after coming home from the track what happen to the days when we went to junk yards and used parts never did we do like these guys are doing today how is that fun 100k in a car that you couldn't sell for 25k on a good day, my goal is 13 and when I head back I believe I will be there without breaking the bank,
I love the concept "Dance with the one who brung ya" I had a 79 Grand Prix with a wheezy 301 4bbl. I did everything I could do to make that car faster including swapping rears. Everybody laughed and just said " swap it for a sb Chevy or a 400 Poncho"... nah! That's taking the short cut.
I launch it at 4500 rpm and walk the clutch out with the throttle kept where it is until i feel what the tires are doing and modulate the throttle accordingly 😂 Great video, and I'm still the guy playing with a timing light too
Great video Tim, I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I still tweak my car at home just to make it more mine and I'm proud of that!
Well said! That’s what I continue to do. Largely because I am not an expert. I’m just a hobbyist tinkering. Also, my hobby budget as a dad isn’t very generous. Mainly I enjoy taking a used carb, throwing a rebuild kit on it, then play with jetting, tuning, etc. Of course plugs, timing, used bolt on stuff and, all that. I have fun with my own satisfaction for sure! A ‘73 Valiant with a 318. Why? Because I like driving it. It’s just like my first car in high school.
The thing is that many people have done this stuff in the past and that's why we have better and faster cars and trucks. I couldn't even imagine getting the doors blown off by a diesel Dodge 4x4 and the second generation Dodge diesel race trucks were done by guys figuring out how to make the engine run better because there was no after market parts for a Cummins diesel. They were tractor engine's put in a truck. I can see your point and I can see the other guys point also. Racing is about going as fast as possible at any cost.
You are correct! And I am not against fast cars or expensive performance parts at all. But you can tune a 700 hp motor as you can tune a 200 hp motor... but I don't see much of it no matter which end of the spectrum you look at ...
Its really about attention span and memory.... I put cars back together that have been in pieces for years.... Just from memory most people would pull their hair out 😂😂😂
I’m with you I just did video of Yellowsubmarine doing doughnuts and a person comment that must have LS engine to do that I commented nope it’s a small block mopar with no modern parts other than a MSD streetfire box so I don’t over rev when have fun
A mechanic buddy of mine would buy 305s from the junkyard, put in his 69 Nova. Then tune them, take to the track and see how quick he could go. He did it for his own entertainment. He’d run it all summer and if it didn’t die he would drive daily till it did and then get another junk engine and repeat. Was almost in the 13s cars was over 3600 with driver. Good times and old small blocks are almost free.
I say it all the time to the point I’m sick of saying it. But one more time… Tune tune tune and then tune some more! Been writing that on the websites for ever.
Love your videos Tim. Someday I hope to get the basics of tuning. I’ve learned a lot the last couple of years, but still in 1st grade when it comes to engines. Doing a video on my 76 440 for the truck, but broke down and bought a ‘new cam’ because we couldn’t get enough information about the used ones was going to use. Still probably went too big. Plan to Dyno this month… for fun and to break it in before installing.
Good points Mr. Tim. I do believe in buying good pistons with some compression, especially for a 318! Anyway, I did open my wallet and buy some new Edelbrock VRS 4150's but as you say tuning is going out the window. I don't go to the strip but chasing personal milestones is too me, where the fun lies. Have fun.
Another similar phenomenon involves folks that have deep pockets and pay others to do the work, win a race or car show trophy as if they actually earned it. Sometimes they give credit due but too often they gloat with self agrandizing attitudes. Might as well just buy a trophy.
Back in the day we’d read the PAW flyers to see what they did with mixing and matching different engine parts and the machine work required to make it work. Ended up with some interesting combinations of crap to build stroker engines with weird heads and stuff 😅
It's also a good way to get hurt. Having a 200hp car and bolting on another 200 over night. Makes the car handle slot different. NOS! Just going from a open differential to locked makes the cornering a lot different.
You aren't to that age group yet. I took a s10 down to a 15 second flat, quarter mile time. That's using the 2.8 V6 and the 700R4 transmission. It took many hours of finding the right combination to get it there. I'm about to start on a 318 to replace the one in my 84 D250. There are so many options now on what can be done with a 318, it'll about give a man a headache. I'd be happy with 250 crankshaft horsepower and be all in by 4,500 RPM.
When people brag about their 600 horse whatever with a parts list that would make any magazine article proud, I simply ask them what went wrong?! The defensive look on their face as they school me on just what 600 horsepower is. My comeback is always the same. Bill Jenkins made 600 horsepower with a small block 327 in the early 70's. your ability to max out your credit card on engine parts does not match his skills. Conversation over! Great video by the way.
This, all day. I run into this with a few younger guys at work. The conversation drifts to cars and out comes the laundry list of Coyote motor parts they bought or whatever. It's like a race to see who can spend the most money. I don't get it. Then they sneer at your antique V8 because it only makes 475 hp and it only cost you $4000 to build. See they are so much better because their engine cost them $20k and makes 650hp. Whatever dude.
I figure horsepower reaches a point of diminished returns somewhere around 550. Throwing wads of cash at something trying to get beyond that number isnt worth it Unless you are rich or competing in something. These young guys havent figured that out yet.
im 55 and been saying this, same with racing, the computer is doing 98% of all the work, from traction control to shifting point to boost. all they do is give it gas and try to drive straight, hows that driving the car?
What you are saying is true how did that modification you did on the 2 barrel manifold go my poly only has a 2 barrel manifold I'm thinking of doing something with it and pop it into my 58 Plymouth savoy
Especially when they don't even try to make power with what they bought. Whatever it does it does, then buy more to gain another 3 tenths when they could have tuned and got 5 tenths without buying anything.
I bought Direct Connection parts from Mr. Norm's and on more than one occasion when I went to pick them up they weren't there because employees were stealing them.
Iv got friends with slants with webbers etc doing 13 .2 quarter yes road registration as well.goes to show how fast our 🇦🇺E49 Chargers were doing 14 .1 quarters factory oh hang on it’s a 6 👍🏻 stuff lap top . Iv had more great times putting lap top rubbish to shame Mopar old school for life . 👍🏻🇦🇺.
Who's Dummy enough to pay 500$ for an aluminium intake that makes 5hp more than a good OEM. Most of the people who have money dont have the knowledge, Point! I build my engines from scratch and learn on every details of a difference it makes for my Formula. Right now I,'m rebuilding a 74' GTO 350ci. The Pontiac 4bbl Intake is as good as any X-brand aluminium intake. It's been dynoed at 5hp increase at the most. I got a deal on an aluminium one for 100$ and im only using it cause Pontiac engines are prone to overheat and it will help on vaccum lock. My 65' GTO is 3700 lbs, does a 10 pounds make that much difference going to the store or cruising at 60 mph? I also have a 75' slant-6 valiant that everyone screams "slant-6 alert" yuck, omg, I would put a 360 or at least a 318 in that? Why? It runs like a watch and I stay longer on the track. It's 18 sec. of pleasure. Hahaha! I started to tweeck it little by little but i'm not investing 1 month salary to hit 17 sec. I had my eyes opened and just snatch a 70' snowcat slant-6 with a 2bbl intake and carb. Maybe It's worth swapping the head and camshaft of 20hp? I dont know, I havent had the time to really check the specs cause it's what I do. I know, it's easier just to swap the hole slant-6, but is it worth it? Maybe one day? I dont have the time for now anyway. I tought I was also one of the last homemade DIY car and engine backyard power upgrader from scratch. Im not cheap, Im ecoresponsable in the real sens. I recycle and reuse any good parts that still have life in. Hey, that's how we were raised like! I love your videos and older internet blogs. 😊 Ps- I just cant see myself going at the shop saying, please built me a powerhouse engine. How much? 20k$ no problem, here my arm and leg in deposit. Hahaha😂

Thanks man!!!
Great video! This is the problem I'm facing with my projects. There is plenty of advice to buy things that will make you go fast, but very little on how to make the best of what you have, or how to do stuff on your own if you don't have a local machinist or your own shop.
TRUE TRUE TRUE !!! Advice on "go fast parts' but then what if you buy them??? you still have to tune to take full advantage of them!
your not alone I'm also so done with opening up the pocket book to go fast, I have to come to the line that it will just be quick on the street and slow on the track, and I was telling my wife about a month ago after coming home from the track what happen to the days when we went to junk yards and used parts never did we do like these guys are doing today how is that fun 100k in a car that you couldn't sell for 25k on a good day, my goal is 13 and when I head back I believe I will be there without breaking the bank,
Nice! Go get that 13 !!!
Absolutely. I agree with everything you said.
Thanks!
Can’t disagree with anything you said!
Thanks for watching !!
I love the concept
"Dance with the one who brung ya"
I had a 79 Grand Prix with a wheezy 301 4bbl. I did everything I could do to make that car faster including swapping rears. Everybody laughed and just said " swap it for a sb Chevy or a 400 Poncho"... nah! That's taking the short cut.
thanks !!!!!
I’m with you I’m doing the same thing to my slant six duster now
Thanks!!!
Maybe someday some track will start a class that requires carb and stock ignition and it will catch on! Keep making videos Tim...
That would be cool!
I launch it at 4500 rpm and walk the clutch out with the throttle kept where it is until i feel what the tires are doing and modulate the throttle accordingly 😂 Great video, and I'm still the guy playing with a timing light too
You are having fun !!!
I like what you're saying and I like what you're doing keep it up I'm an old gearhead to
Thanks!
Great video Tim, I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I still tweak my car at home just to make it more mine and I'm proud of that!
Right on!
That's great !!! Keep enjoying it !!
Great video Tim!
Thanks Jeff!
Great to see you Tim , Excellent video, great topic. Your not alone on this subject. Enjoyed watching.
Hey, thanks!
Great video. Happy 4th.
Thanks! You too!
Great video tim.
Thanks 👍
The problem today is people want instant gratification. They have no patience.
Very True Statement!
Ha! LS isn't the answer for everything! Thanks!
Great video Tim! " you dont have to be the fastest"
Thanks!!
I think more actual enthusiasts will start doing more of this, because of how expensive parts have become.
That could be the case!! Thanks!
@@318willrun or, have an engine, let's say a poly, with no aftermarket support. That's where I'm at!
@@IndirectConnection1 Poly.... to bad there isn't a lot of support for them
A mechanic buddy of mine would buy 305s from the junkyard, put in his 69 Nova.
Absolutely those are the best times!!!
I say it all the time to the point I’m sick of saying it. But one more time…
Tune tune tune and then tune some more!
Been writing that on the websites for ever.
10-4 !!!
You are doing good my friend, stay at it!!! Thanks!
Great video thanks
Thanks!!
Have fun.
Thanks! I absolutely support buying good parts/performance parts! But even an engine with nice parts can still be tuned and more squeezed out of it!
Nice . I learn alot from u
Thanks friend!
Another similar phenomenon involves folks that have deep pockets and pay others to do the work, win a race or car show trophy as if they actually earned it. Sometimes they give credit due but too often they gloat with self agrandizing attitudes. Might as well just buy a trophy.
Put the trophy up for auction!!! LOL
100%
Back in the day we’d read the PAW flyers to see what they did with mixing and matching different engine parts and the machine work required to make it work. Ended up with some interesting combinations of crap to build stroker engines with weird heads and stuff 😅
Yep, I remember PAW!
It's also a good way to get hurt. Having a 200hp car and bolting on another 200 over night. Makes the car handle slot different. NOS! Just going from a open differential to locked makes the cornering a lot different.
True!
glad to see you back up here when are we going to see the duster at the track? No youre not along!!!!
Thanks! I can jabber a few minutes, but I can't take time for wrench'n or drag strips right now. Hope to get back to it in the near future!
That's doing pretty good with the 2.8 !!! Thanks!!
Agreed 100%
When people brag about their 600 horse whatever with a parts list that would make any magazine article proud, I simply ask them what went wrong?! The defensive look on their face as they school me on just what 600 horsepower is. My comeback is always the same. Bill Jenkins made 600 horsepower with a small block 327 in the early 70's. your ability to max out your credit card on engine parts does not match his skills. Conversation over!
Great video by the way.
Good point!! Thanks!
@@CatastrophicFarms the icing on the cake is when you gap them with your 475hp!
@@1996slamster😂
I figure horsepower reaches a point of diminished returns somewhere around 550. Throwing wads of cash at something trying to get beyond that number isnt worth it Unless you are rich or competing in something.
These young guys havent figured that out yet.
I 100% agree!
Thanks!
Modify what you got , because you can't afford the go fast goodies. That's what's the roots of racing is about!
Thanks!
Truth!!
Thanks!
👍🏻 agreed
Thank you!
Thumbs up.
Thank you!
@@318willrun I still do it that way , it gives one a since of accomplishment.
It's fun to watch people's face with my little 3.9 V6 in my race truck.
Thanks! Fun is the name of the game!
There is a lot of young talent out there at drag strips all over america don't kid yourself.
I like doing it with stock exhaust manifolds.
thanks!
Doing it the old ways is a sport
It's not the achievement of going faster
It's the difficulty in the pursuit of the achievement of going faster
Agreed!
im 55 and been saying this, same with racing, the computer is doing 98% of all the work, from traction control to shifting point to boost. all they do is give it gas and try to drive straight, hows that driving the car?
True thing!
Yeh my pocket aint that deep. I tend to like the road less traveled
i like the road less traveled ... !!!
@@318willrun It's so much more interesting
What you are saying is true how did that modification you did on the 2 barrel manifold go my poly only has a 2 barrel manifold I'm thinking of doing something with it and pop it into my 58 Plymouth savoy
The van ran great! Thanks!
I agree with you I am too a :"dinosaur" and think it is ridiculous how much $$$ people throw at things nowadays, that just takes all the fun away.
Especially when they don't even try to make power with what they bought. Whatever it does it does, then buy more to gain another 3 tenths when they could have tuned and got 5 tenths without buying anything.
That's the Mopar life no real mail order parts to make high horsepower. But you can build it better.
Yep! Thanks!
Well there's a little caveat there because Direct Connection was a Mopar invention in the 70s to do basically just that, sell mail order racing parts
That's awesome!
👍👍

Ps- I just cant see myself going at the shop saying, please built me a powerhouse engine. How much? 20k$ no problem, here my arm and leg in deposit. Hahaha😂
interesting on the HP on the intake.... Thanks for sharing!
Credit card tuners! Now they order their tune online and press a key. I miss the old days.
True!
It’s been this way for 40 years it’s just getting worse.
Hard truth.... but the truth!
Hate to say it Tim but now a whole lot of people seem to have more $$$ (or credit card $$$) than brains. It is a sad statement of the times we live in.
