Learn arpeggios everyone. Just learn the arpeggio shapes for A major, D major and E7 and you will understand what Guthrie means about playing out of the chord. Thanks Guthrie, really enjoying these lessons. Keep ‘em coming!

Yea, it’s called Google
@@southisaac all the arpeggios are contained in all the CAGED shapes. So learn what the CAGED shapes are. But CAGED itself is just the 1,3,5 of the major chords. If you're doing minor chords, the 3 is flatted thus it changes the shapes slightly. Then when you do dominant seventh chords, you also throw in the flattened 7th note. It all makes sense once u take the time to study it. The next step is then to get it into your muscle memory. The best way to do that is soloing over looped chord progressions.

I will say you had me sitting on frustrated for a while because you continuously say the same thing and play stuff over and over and i was just not grasping it. And than, like you said, it all made sense and i could see it. You got me excited about guitar again. I cant thank you enough

You are connecting the fretboard in a way I think those before want to do but can't clearly explain what's happening. Your presentation and explanation and demonstration create a whirlwind of possibilities, inspiration, clarity, and so much more. It's like literally blowing the dust off something with a hurricane but you allow the possibility to the viewer to be the eye of the storm and move along with all this "unlocked" and mysterious and powerful information.

Man, You and Michael Palmisano are literally the reason I picked up a guitar 3 years ago. I stumbled on a guitargate reacts video and he was talking theory stuff and I had no idea what he was talking about but just liked watching cause of how much you could see he loved music. Then I guess through watching him the algorithm lead me to one of your videos and you were breaking down triads and some pentatonic stuff in such a no bull shit way that for the first time I thought I could totally get this if I go for it. No fancy school needed. 3 years later I cant put this guitar down man. I am obsessed. I LOVE it like nothing before. You are a legit hero to me man. Changed my life. Wish I was a little more financially stable for artistworks and to just repay you for the priceless gift you gave me. One day. For now just want you to know how much just these youtube videos have impacted me. Thank you brother. For everything you do.

This is absolute gold level . Can't believe you would get negative comments.
A little off topic here regarding pedals. For me, one of the most important pedals in the arsenal is a distortion box. I don't play with a lot of distortion, just a little breakup and boost, beyond what the amp provides. I've tried a bunch. Most recently JHS Charlie Brown and Brown Amplification Protien. Close, but not quite it. Then, on Reverb, I saw the Guthrie Trapp distortion pedal. I got it, and it's exactly right for me. Creamy, with some bite, but not in your face. There's a beautiful subtlety to it. Guthrie, I think I saw they are not being made anymore. I'm sure there's a good reason for that, but, if you can say there is beauty in distortion, this pedal has it.

These ideas have totally opened up the guitar for me. Both new ideas, and actually understanding what I was playing in the first place! I'm not terrified when someone asks me to play a song I don't know anymore!
The longer I play the more the basics actually help me and still come out of my playing… when I was 6 I had a piano class, and the teacher would have us sing and play “Do Mi So, Do Mi So, Ti Fa So, Ti Fa So.” Over and over and over, it was so boring.. and now I find it always coming out in my playing and arrangements in some way.. thanks for the motivation to keep learning, Guthrie :) #MotivationOutOfTheSpeaker 🤗

Guthrie, great stuff, my father was a self taught classical guitar player, this 2 note harmonies you are playing remind me of some of the things he played on classical guitar, some of the exercises and some of the pieces he played, it's always a learning experience watching your videos, your E pentatonic lick in your other A video is now incorporated into my stuff, thanks

Thanks for this lesson GT! I've already put about 3hrs in shedding this concept you're showing. Starting really tight with the changes like you're doing then slowly expanding the fretboard and shapes and more strings. Great stuff!

Your exactly right Guthrie. I’m self taught, so it took me forever to put it together but once I stopped thinking about these names “CAGED technique” and realized it’s just how the instrument is laid out/tuned it clicked. Now I fully think/approach everything by the chords and can almost without thinking play chords/notes/scales whatever you call it all over the neck. Thanks Guthrie!!
Good stuff. I'm starting to get better at seeing the chord shapes as I move about but what slows me down is keeping in mind which chords are available. In something like Amaj, which comes up all the time, I know immediately that the other major chords available are D and E. It's when I'm in a key I don't know so well that I have to think harder. Spending more time in keys I don't know so well will obviously help, and when playing with jam tracks I should spend a bit more time before playing to understand the chord progression so that I'm anticipating, rather than playing catch-up.
That made sense for the first time..... just hearing the chords behind what you played. Waiting for the ultimate light bulb moment lol....😎
Thank you Guthrie, you have really improved my playing. Your down to earth approach and understanding is a true gift. You have freed me from the purgatory of pentatonic and music theory. Using my hears and making music again, I am truly grateful.
I get more excited about new videos on this channel than any other one on UA-cam/ I think I like your channel better than anything on T.V. haha. Everyone has different taste but for me just trying to improve on my playing this cant be beat.

I've been hearing Tim Pierce talking about this for a while now. Although I've learned so many things from watching his videos, I never quite understood what he meant about playing the chord shapes. Your last 4 video's have been really great for my fretboard fundamentals. I get it now. Big confidence boost in my playing. Thanks for this. Amazing lessons.

Hoi Guthrie, the off the cuff style, with eyes shooting from side to side, in which you perform your videos brings a smile to my face everytime..... composing on the spot.
Great stuff, but i still miss an aspect that seems vital to my guitarplaying.
Guitarplayers seem to be notorious fretboard gazers, this is (imho) a pretty heavy handicap, for me anyway. Someone once said to me the eyes are the whore of the senses. It cracked me up....
Somethings i practice, if in a very good mood, with eyes closed. I play the low A, D and E string as a rudimentary accompaniment. Hit the A string and than plant a finger somewhere on the fretboard and listen....... to what the tone has to say and resolve it to a chordtone if neccesary. Imo a great way to be confronted with just the sound without disturbance of eyes-brain fog.
After finding a suitable restingplace/chordtone play the corresponding arpeggio up and down the neck using as many and long slides as you dare. And than ....... (drumrrrrrroll) playing doublestops, in 1 chord (say G6 or G7) with slides on 2 strings (or 3 or more) also with eyes closed. Sliding over longer stretches is also a nice way to play with rythm: when is the touchdown on the target note? Right on time seems gloriously impossible. Another advantage of longer slides is that the inner ear is faster than the fingers, so the dominating fingers are put in the backseat.
I would love to hear you do a lesson on how to play rythmically with sliding doublestops!

Hi Guthrie. Really new to the channel and following Uncle Larry. This approach you show has really started to open up my playing. I was playing just scales and then having a hard time remembering where I was on the neck. Guthrie, one thing I discovered tonight is how the relative major and relative minor pentatonic shape and scale are the same! Just different shape numbers so to speak. Where the major root is three frets higher than the minor root note. Might be a good lesson for UA-cam. Plus a lessons on technique for chicken picking would be good - not too sure if it’s in the country course as still on the beginners part. Thanks

I'm finding that going through on your own (with GT's suggestions as a starting point) and just playing through all of these patterns is a great rut-buster. I've been playing a plenty long time (not that it's obvious, LOL) and sometimes when I pick up a guitar I play the same old blues riffage and think, "damn, my playing so stale!" but when I do something like this, just bopping around the fretboard, getting my ear locked into those implied chords, THEN maybe getting a little adventurous and finding those cool minor-to-major 3rd walk-ups and blue notes I feel alive again! :)
I'd really like to go to Andy Woods' camp one of these years...I worry a bit about doing something in Tennessee in August, though. Sounds like really hot and humid is something to expect.
