Tell Me, Do The Warning Deserve The Hype?!

  • A lot, and I mean quite a lot of you have been asking me to react to The Warning. I had not heard of this band before and know absolutely nothing about them. It looks like they're gaining traction and could have the potential to make it big. It's always good to see some diversity in this particularly homogenous genre that is rock. Of course there are lots of women who love and adore rock and even play, but it's not often enough we are exposed to their talents.

      After Band-Maid and Glim Spanky, The Warning is my favorite recent find of the last few years. With these three spectacular bands, rock is truly back. (Special nod to Velvet Sighs' Pretending for being an all-time great grunge song). Coincidentally, all female leads.

    After The Warning first opened for Halestorm, Lzzy Hale told her band to go back the practice room again.
    At age 22,20 and 17 (for a few days) they already have three albums released, two of them as independent productions. I have yet to find a filler on one of the records. I'm 61 and grew up on Purple and Zeppelin. My standards are high and I do not like a lot of temporary rock bands. These women have all they need to have. Plus some.

    "Do they deserve the hype?" Well, what hype do you mean? They started the band in 2013, had their first viral video in 2014 and from that day on it was a struggle and continuous hard work to get, where they are now. Since they were kids, they got offers from Disney and refused. They got offers from Nickelodeon and refused. They got invitations from America Got Talent and refused. They got an invitation fron The Voice of Mexico and refused. They got offers from producers and labels, who wanted to make them big and they refused. They wanted to go their own way and not be formed or alteted just to become a product worth hyping. They have written, recorded, produduced and distributed an EP and two albums independently until they finally found a partner in Lava Records, who wanted to support but not change them for economical reasons. This year, they have released their third album and played over 100 gigs. They have become one of the most preferred opening bands in Mexico, because they have built up a reputation of being reliable, high energetic, friendly, grateful, uncomplicated, ambitioned and unpretentious. Over all a complete safe card as an opener, which earned them the opening slots for Def Leppard, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Stryper and Guns vn Roses, when they were looking for local opening bands, when they played in Mexico. And they have not only recently passed the 100 million views mark on UA-cam, but also high numbers of streams on spotify (which answers the question, if they are only successful because of their looks). All of this without even promoting their album or merchandise as much as they should, as they do it all by themselves and cannot effectively do it, while on tour. And still they have close to 500,000 followers on UA-cam and their (pretty fanatic) fan base is constantly growing for years and don't seem to stop. Honestly, there is absolutely no hype! These girls and their crew are probably one the hardest and mosr passionate working teams in the rock scene today and people see it. They hear it. They feel it. And they highly appreciate it. They have the talent, the creativity, the dedication, the passion, the ability, the character, the work ethics, the professionality, the intelligence, the emotions, the devotion and the will to make it. They really don't need to be hyped.

Man, was I surprised to see 3 very young ladies playing a song called Dust to Dust live and the song just blew me away but not just because it's an awesome song but how well they all played their chosen instruments. What I am really impressed with, at such a very young age, how good they are as songwriters and their lyrics are so far beyond their age. Kids this age should not be able to write such serious lyrics but yet, here we are with The Warning. As they start to really experience life with all its ups and downs, I think their lyrics will get even more brilliant. So to answer the question if they deserve the hype.......................110% yes.

    Whoever produced error did a great job of highlighting the strengths of the band. Each song is well crafted with catchy hooks and high energy. I love blistering solos but i feel like those usually come in 4 plus piece bands…I guess I always think of the solo in smells like teen spirit which simply expands on the main riff. I’m just happy they stick ales bass prominently in the mix …reminded me of how AiC had really audible bass that grabbed your attention.

I’ve not seen them live yet but those who have say they are better live than in studio. They also write all their songs (40+ except 2) in English, their second language, starting as young teens and slightly before.

    @robertkrawitz8237 Рік тому +39

    They most assuredly deserve the hype, yes.
    Dany only plays a guitar solo if in their judgment as a whole they decide that the song needs one. It's a bit hard for me to envision where one would fit in this song. She doesn't play solos to show off, and her solo style tends to be more lyrical (think David Gilmour). One of her most beloved solos, in The End, is all of 15 seconds long and not technical, but it adds so much to the song that I have difficulty with acoustic versions of it. Interestingly, most of her most technical solos were doing covers at a younger age. She certainly can shred when appropriate; listen to Z, Queen of the Murder Scene, or XXI Century Blood.
    They have a very full sound for a trio, between a combination of intelligent, riff-oriented instrumentals, bass lines that fill in for the missing second guitar (Ale is an outstanding bassist who does a lot more than double the guitar part; in particularly, when Dany solos, she plays a hybrid bass/rhythm guitar line), and drums that do a lot more than set the beat. Dany seamlessly switches between lead and rhythm guitar, as she does numerous times in this song. In addition, as all three sing (even if Ale only very rarely sings lead, as she does not enjoy it), they can use voices to fill in for the missing instrument.
    The songs on this album, and indeed all of their albums, vary tremendously in style.

    Saw the Warning for the first time in Monterrey, Mexico (their hometown, I'm from Mexico City) in 2017 opening before Tyler Bryant, Buckcherry, Tesla, Vince Neil, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard and Aerosmith. I had a wonderful impression. Throughout these years I found out they grew huge, playing at the Hell & Heaven (our most important metal fest, where I saw you guys, the Darkness), then Vive Latino, Def Leppard (again) as well as many gigs of their own here in Mexico, the US and Europe. I am happy that a Mexican band finally broke the stereotypes of our idiosyncrasy: language (English), style (old school, soul based hard rock) and gender (girls) instead of the ones we have that never hit the mainstream because of the language barriers. So proud someone finally had the balls to show how passionate and prepared they could be, to the rest of the world, not just latin America. Oh! And btw, you should definitely check out their NEW cover of Enter Sandman in the "Blacklist", a Tribute to the Black Album, involving many artists and styles worldwide, from Miley Cyrus, to Elton John, Chad Smith, Rob Trujillo, among others. Funny thing is, that's the song which made them famous, and the best one of the album. Really original!!

I was just having a discussion the other day about how there were so few contemporary females in rock / alt that got airtime when I was a teen in the 90s, Kim Deal, D’arcy Wretzky, Shirley Manson, Courtney, Melissa AdM, the other one from hole (sorry whoever you are), I’ll count Gwen too, Renee Brennan from Tadpole (though that was a few years later), less played (here anyway) was Elastica, Catatonia, PJ, Skunk Anansie, that’s about it for a 10+ year period. I could reel off a hundred male rockers from that era. I don’t think that’s changed much in the last 20 years either, in fact, I feel like there’s fewer now than then. I think we’re dismissed too easily in this genre, for reasons already covered (*cough/ingrainedmysogyny/cough*). Growing up in the 70's I was excited to see the number of hard rocking women coming to the front with likes of Stevie Nicks. HEART, Tina Turner, Joan Jet, Pat Benatar and so many others. The problem came in the 80's when the video age had to sexualize their gifts on order to sell the talent. Women in my opinion absolutely rock just as hard as any male/band. Too much emphasis is put on selling your soul for your art rather than just appreciating the gift. Women musicians have a lot to say and usually in the most honest way.
