@@eamobyrne1 it's a shame, because I really enjoy the videos. But the titles are a little offputting and I don't really know what to expect when I click on them. I'd much rather they be more direct: Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero: first watch and analysis. Or something similar.
I’m a professional musician. I’ve been a session player for some of the best North American Improvisational (Jazz) Artists and I took my daughter to see her on the Reputation Tour, with a bit of a, “Oh God, save me.”, attitude. I was floored. Not just by her performance, but how she clearly connects to her audience like no one I’ve ever seen. She actually cares.. I mean to the best of her ability considering the circumstances. Anyway, I’m a bigger fan than my daughter. Have been since that concert. I’m a bigger Swifty than my now, 20 year old daughter. But due to the fact she writes about herself in such an honest way that her fans feel like they actually know her. That and the fact from the age of 12 she knew how to write a good hook. What’s not to admire?🤷🏽♂️😂🤣
This is so wholesome. I’m the daughter who got her mother into the fandom and now she’s even more excited than me when new album drops. It makes me so happy than we can share joy through talking about and listening to the same artist. Your daughter probably appreciates that too.

I'm mostly a hard rock/metal guy. I'm not ashamed to admit I like taylor swift. Her songs are catchy and there is just something about her voice. She is very pleasant to listen to.
Same here. I'm a hard rock fan who grew up listening to Oasis and I love Taylor Swifts music. Really good singalong pop music with some songs which, although not in my favourite genre, are really really good, a good voice and easy on the eye too. No shame in loving a bit of T Swift.
Exactly the same boat for me. I have always been a rock fan, and in more recent years, harder rock and metal. However, I have always enjoyed Swift's music. These day, my partner is a huge fan of Swift, so naturally there is now a second, sentimental/emotional element that allows me to enjoy her songs even more!

I was nervous about this because I like a lot of Taylor Swift songs and I have a (somewhat irrational since obviously I don't know her) fondness for her as a person. So your assessment was really appreciated. You are a good man Justin Hawkins, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
@@michaelvalverdenavarro7690 I saw them in the Folklore documentary discuss the song and Aaron said it started with him sending all the musical base and Taylor did all the lyrics and melody, but it really doesn't matter, Aaron praises Taylor as one of the best songwriters ever and I hope they collaborate again on the future
hell yea. guilty pleasure, at least when it comes to music, is a bullshit concept. just like what you like and own it. im typically kind of a punk rock guy but i proudly admit to being a swiftie.
@@Bridgercraft no, it's not wrong, i know what things are interesting for me, none of what she does is, and then is actually factual that she's a below average singer, she has no skill as a vocalist, she just sings in that girly soft pop style.
I'm a died-in-the-wool rock guy who has played many shows in my life, and I know very well that Taylor Swift is a brilliant songwriter. She's phenomenal and deserves her success.
I don’t think anyone else would or could bring themes including altruism, narcissism, Godzilla and Kong into a monologue about Taylor Swift. Thank you Mr Hawkins.
Finally someone who is completely unironically positive about Taylor Swift. She just makes good music. Not everyone has to like everything, of course. But this elitist music chatter is just mostly so unappealingly immature. Not so with Justin. He loves music.
@@bearb1asting The only way to really understand the "big deal" is to listen with an open mind to a wide-variety sampling of her songs from various albums. There are a zillion swifities, but the vast majority of swifties are NOT superfans of her pop radio hits. Most swifities are superfans of her songs that you rarely, if ever, hear on the radio. If you have listened to all or most of such albums as folklore, evermore, Midnights, Reputation, and Red and you still don't like her music, then it's just a matter of personal taste and you happen to be out of sync with the zillions of swifties who can shoot a song to #1 even if "the song" is just 8 seconds of static. But if you have not heard the deeper cuts, then there is a high probability that you are a swiftie who just doesn't realize it yet. (That was me - a 65 year old Metallica fan - up until February 2023 when I did a deep dive into TS). Prescription: sample a variety of deep cuts from assorted albums to see if you still don't understand the appeal. Bottomline: The key to understanding the TS phenomenon is realizing that it's the deep cuts - not the radio hits - that drive the swifties to fanaticism (and one could argue that being a mastermind in the music industry has also helped put her in this position).
@@bearb1asting it’s unfortunate but sometimes people like things for no good reason. i wish Some swifties would admit that rather than bending over backwards trying to “prove” how good she is by comparing her to objectively more talented artists. it does both her and the other artist a disservice. that’s the only frustrating part about trying to understand taylor fans lmao
It’s obvious that you already do, but treasure those moments of listening to music in the car with your daughter. She’ll never forget them. Most of my favourite childhood memories are of listening to cassettes in the car with my Dad. Some of those songs make me feel like I’m 8 years old again without a care in the world, just singing at the top of my lungs with my Daddy 🥰🥰🥰 Unforgettable, and I still have the cassettes 💖
Love this! I had the same experience as a kid with my dad. I feel like music can be tradition and love - you pass what moves you onto your children, and it can connect you and relate you to not only the song/artist, but each other.
The blank space song is how i met my girlfriend, her tag line was it’s gonna be forever or i’s gonna go down in flames…. And i answered the blank space line😂 I think she’s a good songwriter and singer. If it sounds good it is good regardless of genre.
Taylor has not only a very, very large fanbase, but I also love that she is standing up for other artists' rights by re-recording her first 6 albums that she originally recorded on her old label, Big Machine Records. I don't blame her that she was very upset when Scooter Braun bought the masters to them... she is a very smart woman that deserves to own the work she made, from "Love Story" to "Blank Space"!
Lol she so not standing up artists rights by re recording here music she is looking after her self by getting all money from them. U must be a Stan then lol
@@Thebearmre7 money from them? Money from the people who had no hand in creating the music SHE created? And showing artists that they can and should own their own creations? Ya, she’s paving away to artist autonomy. These big corps do not care about art or the artists, all they care about is money.
@@05645ci You conveniently left out the part where she tried to buy them back, but they refused to sell them to her. 🙃 That’s why she’s re-recording them, and that’s why she isn’t on good terms with Scooter. She tried to work out a deal, but they refused.
@@05645ci maybe you should get your facts straight, she did try to buy her masters but they didn't want to sell it to her. She explicitly told Scott Borchetta that if he ever sold the label, she would like to buy her masters but she was only informed about it after it was already sold. I mean, why would they fucking tell her right, she was their biggest cash cow at the time so I doubt anyone would buy BM without her catalog. And she would rightfully demonize Scooter Braun because he bullied her multiple times one the internet WAY BEFORE he even bought Big Machine.
Touching hearing about you bonding with your daughter listening to Taylor Swift. We should be so thankful that our daughters like something we can get into ❤ Taylor Swift is the real deal!
Oh wow Justin reviewing Taylor! What a treasure! I absolutely love her, specially folklore/evermore era and it is not even guilty please at all. Her songs have basic chords (hence pop) but her lyrics are soooo good. She turns me into a single white chick in a heart beat and I don’t mind 😂
She has said on many occasions that she follows what Nashville taught her about songwriting. It needs to have a story. Sometimes the music is simpler but the lyrics are deeper. Especially on her re-recordings.
Really cool to see so much music appreciation on here. The difference between good pop music and bad pop music can be a fine line as the production choices are so similar but all these songs sound great on an acoustic guitar or a piano which, I think, is the litmus test to see whether a song is actually good or not. TS writes great songs and her lyrics are underrated. Folklore is a masterpiece but "Lover" might be the best 'pop' album of the decade. Stack her up against the Katy Perrys etc. of the world and it's no comparison.
I absolutely love this song...she crushes it with this single and album....I listened to it yesterday and there are some fantastic songs on it...."Lavender Haze", "Maroon" and "Bejewelled" are all excellent tracks too.....
I agree with you, I wouldn't call it reinventing, I think that she has just grown with her art because she started at such a young age we have watched her mature and her musical themes have matured with her. I also think that this shows that she is taking care of herself mentally and putting herself before popularity and willing to experiment and that's great.
she has the sort of devoted fanbase that michael jackson had. swift is a light rod for the way many women identify with the world, she has her a huge female audience who identify with her music and that is the heart of her music.
I stupidly dismissed Taylor Swift's music for years, filing her under "teen-music (girls)" but then in lockdown she brought out 'Folklore' and I had time to listen to it. It blew me away; an assured, mature album from a genuinely gifted musician/writer. 'The Last Great American Dynasty' is, in my view, a classic song (as well as being an intriguing, true story).
Hmm... I just tried to listen to the song you mention and I guess it's mostly the lyrics you're into? Cause I don't much care for lyrics so I didn't pay any attention on that part and musically it's just an insanely boring void.
Agree. THat's where I'd classified her. I've now reassessed her music after these two albums, gone back into her catalog and now listening to Midnights. Very talented songwriter.
@@DerEchteBold Well, you're entitled to your opinion and you DID at least give it a listen. If you're not a 'lyrics person' it's always going to be a hard sell to you as a story song. Cheers.
@@robertblack6853 You have my respect for this reply. Sorry for my negative approach but to me there's something wrong with music if you need the meaning of the lyrics to make it work. Anyways, It's good you can take something from the song. All the Best
So have you stopped dismissing music for teen girls then? It’s a common sexist attitude so like good on you for being able to admit you were wrong abt her music / ability
I became a TS fan after watching her Crossroads episode with Def Leppard. It was brilliant. Saw her live a little while after that and it was one of the best shows I’ve attended.
@@estrellasalazar5329- Was gonna put ‘Don’t Blame Me,’ too. I just stared listening to Taylor, these last few weeks. ‘reputation’ is really impressive.
Thanks for another quality dissection! Although her music isn't something I usually gravitate towards I always enjoy it when I hear it on the radio. I'm pleased Taylor hasn't vanished into the never-never.
What is it about Taylor Swift? Two of my grand daughters can already sing six of her songs and I heard Begin Again recently and the tears started rolling down my cheeks. No song has ever done this to me before. I listened to it 3 times and the tears kept coming- the lyrics, melody ,music? There's just something so special about her voice. Thankfully i listened to it a few days later with a slight moistening of the eyes achieved and that was that. Phew! I thought i was becoming an emotional softie :) Thanks anyway Ms. Swift
Well now that you've appreciated her newest music video, can I interest you in her 10 minute version of an old song of hers? It's called "All Too Well". Check it out! 🥰 I've seen grown men be reduced to tears with ten syllables of her writing. Very seriously? Every artist owes her for taking on the music industry and getting the rights to their own work. When people say "Taylor Swift is the music industry", they mean it. One of my favorite Clash songs is Complete Control.... and she fixed that con job for them. Every generation has their version of that song. And now, every artist benefits from her winning that war. Respect that woman for what she did for everyone.
I love that one of your bonding experiences with your daughter is listening to music! My youngest daughter is always bringing me songs to listen to!! It's very cool because she listens to music I generally wouldn't choose, so I get to hear things I'd never check out for myself! It's one of our big bonding times as well!! I love it and am always thankful for what she wants me to hear!! She certainly has shown he a huge range of music I'd have missed otherwise!! Love that kid!!!
I like Taylor and of course, she loves The Darkness (who doesn’t). Maybe you guys could let her open for you when you next play the Ipswich Regent or Colchester Hippodrome.

You bringing up listening to songs in the car with your daughter reminds me of when me and my mom would drive around, singing along with songs like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" on the radio. It made me cry a little, honestly. Your daughter will treasure those memories with you for the rest of her life, she just doesn't know it yet. Anyway, riding around with mom in the car singing instilled in me a sneaky love of Steely Dan that I hid all thru my punk years. It also planted the dreaded musician seed. Taylor Swift's okay by me. I don't know any of her songs, but I guess I'll have a listen now.
Having watched quite a lot of your videos now, what strikes me is how good you are at playing the guitar. Your ear for picking up what you’ve just heard is impressive.
Please make more references to Highlander- excellent movies and T.V. show. Great video by Taylor as always. She deserves all her success for sure. Let's not forget she's a Darkness fan. And she once did a killer set with Def Leppard.
Golly, as a newcomer to being very interested and entertained about this guys views on songwriting and his general, light hearted observations about stuff, .... I'm quite surprised how many irrelevant or negative comments are posted. For Me, My evening is way more than 32% better after watching this.
My daughter ( now 19) and I both adore Taylor Swift. She got me into her around the time of 1989 and we've both loved her ever since. She is constantly updating her playlist of Taylor Swift favourites and shares it with her best friends and me. It's fabulous. When the tour is announced I'll be going with her and her friends. So glad you share that joy with your daughter.
She has my full respect. She is blazing the trail for millions of other, unseen girls (and boys, and all other genders too). Question: Did you have any nicknames imposed on you by fans in the past?
So you answered one of my questions about music you and your daughter share. At the height of the TS frenzy, I took my then tween daughter to her first stadium concert on the Fearless tour. We couldn't even get seats together, so as I did the mom panic (don't think there was much texting back then, and she probably didn't have a phone), I marvelled at the incredible production value of this tour and wondered about the intense pressure someone her age must have been feeling with a 12 truck convoy that constituted her stage gear. (I had inadvertently driven down into the wrong underground parking lot, ending up where those trucks were and was politely escorted out.) You have compelled me to take a listen to this new album. My favourite song by TS is The Best Day, a perfect song for me about our mother-daughter relationship. Makes me cry like a baby (especially after a few cocktails) as I wax poetic about her growing up. My daughter hasn't been to a TS concert in years, but we have been to many The Darkness shows, so I thank thee for that!
You're the coolest, Justin Hawkins! 😍🌼 I love this song and I was really excited to see this in my recommended. You're always rockin' even when you're not talking about rock😉
If you’re new to Taylor’s music I recommend you these songs (i chose one from each album that gives the whole idea) Taylor Swift (2006): Should’ve said no Fearless (2008): Fearless Speak Now (2010): Enchanted Red (2012): Red 1989 (2014): Style Reputation (2017): Don’t blame me Lover (2019): Miss americana and the heartbreak prince Folklore (2020): Seven Evermore (2020): No body, no crime Midnights (2022): The great war Honorable mentions: The outside, Breathe, Sparks fly, Haunted, Treacherous, Begin again, Clean, New romantics, So it goes…, Cruel summer, Cardigan, Mad woman, Gold rush, Right there where you left me, Lavander haze, Bigger than the whole sky, Come in with the rain, Better man
Thank you for posting this! Admittedly I have never listened to her other than by chance. No reason other than I've never viewed her music as that interesting, more for teenage girls. But I'm going to dive in 🤷 I trust Justin and fellow fans of his won't steer me wrong.
I don’t like anything she’s done except for her first album done with an acoustic on a tiny desk show… She has talent and charisma but her songs mean nothing , most are childishly simple with teenage lyrics … she is capable of SO much more … but when all you see is dollar signs I guess watered down pop is what you get
Have to agree, Taylor Swift is a great artist to bond over with young children. My daughter’s first concert was Taylor Swift and it was a terrific family night out 🎶❤️
As an Artist himself he must appreciate what a songwriter she is. For me one of the best in the world and the records and awards shes won back that up. You could literally line up all her awards along the great wall of China. Taylor is a global megastar
The extra lick in the intro was very Knopfler. I'd love to hear you sink your teeth into something more challenging sometime... maybe one a month just fall on an obscure group that would benefit massively from the exposure of your word... do 'The Mortality of Doves' by Kayo Dot!

Dad did teach me about cars at least (albeit so I could maintain his), how to make French Toast, and how not to fish if you want to catch anything.

Paul Simon said it best - every generation sends a hero up the pop charts. I neither like or dislike Taylor Swift. I tend to find her songs repetitive and uninspiring musically
Justin, have you ever critiqued a Journey song? If not, would you and please use a song from the band when the iconic vocal god Steve Perry was the frontman! To me, this was the only real Journey. Replacing Perry turned the band into a tribute band of themselves in the 80s!!! Thanks for being you, ❤️ Corina!
Up until today I had not even heard what her voice sounds like. It's one of those artists that you hear far more ABOUT them than you hear FROM them. At least in my experience. Now I know what she sounds like...This gives me hallmark card store "easy listening" vibes. the "tastemaker's" / early adopters of "underground indie" styles seem to be criticising this for her adoption of this style of production,...darker new wave meets lana del ray & chvrches even though these production methods have been popular in the mainstream for a good spell now anyways, ...as well as the 80's of course:)

I think Taylor Swift is without a doubt the best artist of my generation. She breaks records all the time and sells more albums than anyone. I've been a fan since 2008/2009.
I am honestly not connected to any single type of music or individual artist in a visceral way, mostly because I like to stay open to the possibility of experiencing all different types of music. Personally I don't really understand people going crazy over Taylor Swift but I would be the last person to criticize or belittle those who do.
Having a huge fan base is NOT indicative of having talent. Her voice isn't even that good. She has sold more records than a bunch of artist. Coltrane, Davis, Pass but she doesn't have their talent.
I know I'm hardly the target audience for Taylor Swift, but I'm baffled by her popularity. The best explanation I can come up with is that it's Instagram set to music.
Tried .... there's a synthetic quality to her voice and lyrics that I get stuck on. Singers like PJ Harvey, Gillian Welch, Mavis Staples, not to mention Memphis Minnie, Rosetta Tharp, Billie, Joni and Ella are real to me. Taylor Swift seems more like a symptom of something troubling in America.
@@tcpip9999 All great singers. None who started this century (maybe Gillian?). I think Taylor started her career in a more factory processed way but she's emerged as an artist in her own right. Yeah. I have nothing against Taylor Swift in person, she has a pleasant voice and seems to be a good human. But the songs are so boring, after 20 seconds you know it all. I know, I know. I was nervous about this because I like a lot of Taylor Swift songs and I have a (somewhat irrational since obviously I don't know her) fondness for her as a person. So your assessment was really appreciated. You are a good man Justin Hawkins, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Was never a big fan of Taylor until I listened to the Folklore album - it's special.
Same! And then I started listening to her other music. She is very talented, but I hadn’t really listened to her until Folklore and Evermore.
same..fell in love with her after evermore and folklore..awesome music!!
Me too. Im a National and Bon Iver fan, so i gave it a listen and was impressed
No it’s not she uses same 4 chords nearly every song
As do 95% of song writers. They all have a key they favour to one degree or another.
"My little girl is gonna love it." 🥺 That was the sweetest thing I've ever heard in one of these reaction videos to Taylor Swift lately.
TS gets a lifetime pass from me for “The Last Great American Dynasty”. Freaking love that song.
That's an amazing song, but lyrics aside mostly written by Aaron Dessner

I also like as she is getting older her voice is starting to develop that nice warm low tone, but she isn't losing any of her high range.
I was gonna say that Taylor Swift is my guilty pleasure but, you know what? I don't feel guilty about it at all, she's awesome.

@@Bridgercraft no, it's not wrong, i know what things are interesting for me, none of what she does is, and then is actually factual that she's a below average singer, she has no skill as a vocalist, she just sings in that girly soft pop style.
Her last three albums were more folk/indie... and perhaps surprisingly to many they are really good.
Lover was definitely more pop oriented
Only two*.
But yeah, they were really good. Folklore and Reputation are my favorite TS albums.
I'm a died-in-the-wool rock guy who has played many shows in my life, and I know very well that Taylor Swift is a brilliant songwriter. She's phenomenal and deserves her success.

It's my pleasure.
I had to rewind a bit to relisten after Godzilla and Kong was mentioned because I was laughing so hard I didn't hear a word he said after that.

She just makes good music.
Not everyone has to like everything, of course. But this elitist music chatter is just mostly so unappealingly immature. Not so with Justin. He loves music.
I thought initially, judging by the title, he would be shitting on it lol. Pleasantly surprised.

I keep trying to understand what the big deal about her is. I can't tell.
Same here,my dad loved the Moody Blues so I absolutely do now just because of all those times in the car 👍
Me too ❤️
This is probably why I love Rush and Yes.
Me and my dad would spin around in the living room together while he played his favorites, Bob Dylan, Matchbox 20. Never felt happier
Her timing could have been better, you know, by making the release a few weeks later, but c'est la vie.
Fans don’t call her swiftie, they call themselves ‘swifties’! This song really pulls at my emo/taylor swift heart strings, bloody love it!
Let me guess they also called Ed Sheeran 'Sheerio' and Katy Perry 'Katy Cat'? -_-
@@jengriffy01 weird how they'd only do it to Taylor Swift
What do they call Sia in Ozzzz, do they call her Sissy or Sassy?
Tay Tay, which is cringe af.
I think the fans call Taylor Blondie and call themselves Swifties (or Clowns most of the time lol)
She’s incredible. She has reinvented herself time and time again. She’s at the top of her game. Pen game also legit.
I agree with you, I wouldn't call it reinventing, I think that she has just grown with her art because she started at such a young age we have watched her mature and her musical themes have matured with her. I also think that this shows that she is taking care of herself mentally and putting herself before popularity and willing to experiment and that's great.
she is not even mediocre in any way, lmao. bad singer, bad dancer, ok songwriter for a 13 year old girl.
She has never reinvented herself she has been playing the same cards and sound since her first album
@@franklinmendoza4087 huh? listen to folklore/evermore and listen to 1989 back to back please
she has the sort of devoted fanbase that michael jackson had. swift is a light rod for the way many women identify with the world, she has her a huge female audience who identify with her music and that is the heart of her music.

Swift

Technically perfect pop songs... the kind that put me to sleep, immediately 😆
Yeah. I have nothing against Taylor Swift in person, she has a pleasant voice and seems to be a good human. But the songs are so boring, after 20 seconds you know it all. I know, I know. I don't have to listen...Do I have to ask myself why I would rather take the Momsen when I have to choose one of the Taylors?
