- We really missed Kuching after leaving so after saying goodbye to Hannah, Mum and I jumped on a plane from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu and then from there to Kuching. It felt so good to be back and learning about the history of Sarawak in Fort Margarita, especially as the Sarawak Museum is currently shut for renovations!

Kuching is night and day different to Kota Kinabalu, more of a Chinese artistic influence. KK took a lot a war damage , kuching was virtually untouched. For some unknown reason I prefer kuching . Borneo no matter were you go is so interesting. Good video .

James Brooke had to fight off headhunters who were essentially defending their homeland & marauding pirates frm as far as the Celebes & Sulu islands, so it was’nt always as peaceful..certainly not never a smooth ride for him. Reason why he remained a bachelor, I guess. For his courage in fighting off several major invasions..he was rewarded with parcels of land..which eventually became the country of Sarawak..his kingdom..into which I was born..in a land serene & peaceful

I went to Kuching last aug this year for the first time & already bought a ticket for next year trip. I love where we can see old yet nice building around the city. Cant wait to explore this place again :)

Rm20 for a visit to Fort Magherita?
Back when the fort was under control of the Royal Malaysia Police(because Police Field Force brigade camp was built around it) they turned it into police museum. And it was free.
I remember going there a few times by riding my bicycles with friends back in my childhood days.
Not sure if that's because we were foreign or whether that is a flat fee... but it was such a good museum! Good memories for you I'm sure!

Last time I visit the place was in the 90's. The RMP was in the process of handing over the fort to the Museum department, and the inside look barren. Not much items at display in there. Rumor has it that the RMP don't want the Museum to take away their items and lost them. My father was stationed at the camp as an instructor, so he heard these stories.
Wish you could see it back in it's glory days. When you entering the camp, you can see a big Bofor gun on display at the camp entrance.
Visitors usually need to present their ID card or passport at the guard post. Then you walk across a big parade ground in order to get to the fort.
Outside the fort, there are several police armoured vehicles and patrol boats at display.
Also, from the top of the fort, you can see the view of the whole river without any trees blocking it. That was the original purpose of the fort, to watch over the river of any incoming raiders.
*BTW, when I said 'camp', what I meant was base, but we just called it camp. Sound normal.

James Brooke has a town named after him in Palawan. Brooke's Point.
I don't know what the story behind it is.
Brooketown in Brunei too. But it has been change name. Somewhere in Muara district if not mistaken. The land owned by Brooke family but later on given back to the sultanate, it has been told that the Brooke has a plan to buy land somewhere in western of Sabah too to expand their territories but has a cash problems.
