We had to leave Kota Kinabalu and so we headed to Sandakan in preparation for our trip to the Kinabatangan River. As we didn’t leave until the next day, we arrived and dropped our stuff and then set about exploring the city. We saw the things to do in Sandakan and enjoyed going up the heritage walk to the observation deck, although our view was rather obscured. We then headed to the Agnes Keith House before stopping by the lovely English Teahouse (of course!). After this we spent the evening at the waterfront before heading back to our hostel to turn in for the night.

Since you were talking about WW2, Sandakan was where the Death Marches Trail started. It ended in Ranau. More than 2 thousands war prisoners died (British and Australian soldiers).
Long time ago, I watched a documentary about it, and one survivors talked how he was so grateful to the local villagers. They snuck into the camp in the middle of the night, risking their lives so that they could deliver some food to the prisoners. At the time, the villagers were also facing harsh food rations as well by the Japanese. In my opinions, they were heroes.
Looking at me right now, I am not sure if I am able to do what they did. Hell, I might be even working for the Japanese for a scrap of food. Which makes me sad of myself and ashamed.
Hey Adi! Thanks for all of the extra information 🙏 they sure were heroes, such an incredible feat of bravery! I think it's such a hard thing to even wonder if you could have done it ourselves because we feel so far removed from it now in some ways! Thanks so much for watching, for providing great history and also promoting such a great discussion here, mate!
I agreed with Adi, the death Marches trail is worth to mention if you are talking about the WW2 history in North Borneo. Or maybe you can plan a visit to "Kundasang War Memorial", this is a must go places if you want to know more about how British and Australian soldier was captured and being treat as Pow in North Borneo back to 1940s. How the name "death March" came from.
Hello,I'm from Sandakan❤
ua-cam.com/video/H7wTnr4kxFk/v-deo.html
One of the villagers was a young girl probably aged 9 at the time who sneaked food in. The Australian - British Reward Commission later found her. Here is an excerpt "In 1947, Major Harry Jackson, leader and Australian representative on the combined Australian-British Reward Mission, travelled across Borneo to find and reward civilians who had helped prisoners of war. He recorded their testimony, including that of Balabiu, a girl who had given food to starving prisoners on the Sandakan death marches."
Hi, I spent seven and a half years in Kota Kinabalu. Read also Three Came Home and White Man Returns about what they suffered during the Japanese occupation and the courage she had to follow her husband back there after the war. I learned a lot about the different tribes of Borneo. Hope you enjoy the book.
Hey Donna! I'll have to see if I can source the other books too... some more good prezzies for Hannah (but also good for me because I will read them after hehehehe). But shhh don't tell her! Thanks very much for recommending the others as well 😁
Good choice to explore more of the smaller cities around sabah and sarawak. You'll never know what kind of surprise you might discover. Each with their own charming characteristics and history.
You got that right! It was so interesting learning the history. Big love pal!!! ❤️
i love how you appreciate every little things you saw along the trip
Appreciating life's little treasures is a great way to ensure a happier life I believe!
Actually Malaysian dont really appreciate but I wonder why western people appreciate in that way. I really love your way of judging the city.
airport looks nice, the flight looked good. nice place your staying in. keep it up with the fantastic videos 👍🏻💯👍🏻💯💯👍🏻👍🏻💯👍🏻💯💯👍🏻💯👍🏻
Sure was bro! So nice of you to be catching up! Thanks!
Great vlog - Brought back lots of memories and I especially enjoyed visiting the Agnes Keith House and learning about the history of Sandakan
Me too, mumma!

Exactly! and I know, although the people on the table next to us didn't think so... 😂 much more wildlife coming don't you worry!

Hope you enjoy my hometown! Sabah, Land Below the Wind. Big love from Penampang.
It was so great, thank you! Looking forward to visiting again some day. Big love ✌️
The slum were called Sembulan and I actually lived there for 6/7 years before my family and I moved out. As far I can remember there’s a lot of good memories like catching crab with rubber bands, witnessed jellyfish seasons, and going next door mini grocery-like house for kids snacks and sweets! Because of our house broke in twice, we had to moved out around 2002 but still missing the good old memories. Last but not least, awesome videos! Hope you and you’re family had a great time in Sabah! Cheers.
Oh really! That sounds like a lot of fun - I remember I always used to go crab fishing (we call it crabbing) here in England with my mum, dad and grandparents when I was little! Thanks so much for watching and I hope you enjoy the rest of our videos!!!
Thank you for upload this video especially when you walking to Agnes Keith's house. I am super excited for my coming trip to Sandakan this 16 Nov and also planning for walking and want to feel like a tourist.

Hey! I definitely recommend going there, especially as Malaysia has opened up again for local tourism now, right? So many cool experiences there with the sun bear conservation and orangutan sanctuaries nearby in Sepilok too. And of course the Kinabatangan River! Let me know if you get to go! 😁 enjoy!

My hometown , Sandakan 😍
Hope you like my video!!!
Ouch..this is my hometown 😍
Hope I covered it well!!
Ah cool - selfie time, always nice when that happens. Great when you don't expect much from something but it ends up being a winner, like the museum you visit. The English Tea House looks good - can't beat a cream tea and did we spy Hannah with a nice slab of choccie cake?? 👍😋
Always a laugh! I know, it was fab! You sure did... anything chocolate and you can bet Hannah will be all over it (unless it has peanuts!)
Ha, good on her!!!!👍
Welcome to sandakan.
Thank you my friend!
This is one place I haven't been to in Sabah, it could be down the road for me after watching your very educational and interesting video. I have read about the atrocities the Japanese did in the second world war . I bought a book on the history of the conflict in Kuching . The Chinese Malaysians fought back more so than any other ethnic group in Borneo and they paid the price . Borneo for me is a great travel destination and your video shows it .
Ah I definitely recommend it! Although I didn't think much of it initially I was blown away after learning some more - and of course it's a great place to use as a springboard for some of the other wonders that Borneo offers! Thanks so much for your kind words!
Enjoy your days in malaysia
We sure did! Thanks a bunch!
Hi Loz's . To be honest I really proud of you for this video. I'm from Sandakan too and I really miss my hometown now 😂. Thanks for coming dude.

Born and bred in Sandakan and been living in the UK for the past 7 years but I have never been to the Agnes Keith House. Didn't even realise there is so much history in it. Will definely check it out when I am next back which is this coming November! Can't wait
Sandakan is definely not as busy as Kota Kinabalu but it has its little charm. Glad you guys enjoyed your time. 😁😁
PS: that puppy that you stroked in the English Tea House was the same puppy that I stroked when I was there last October. He was too cute! 😆
Hey, Zi! So glad to get to share my experience of your hometown with you! I bet you're excited to go back and we definitely recommend a visit there. I actually bought Keith's book, Land Below the Wind for Hannah for her birthday after learning about her at the house!

about the water villages, actualy they can afford nice house but they prefer to live there because it is their tradition and their main source of food is seafood that is why it is easier for them to live there because it is near to their main source of food.

The observatory had a nice view back then when I was little, but now the trees covered them. It sure needs some modifying.
I think with a little work it could still provide a great view over the city... just the nature has taken over hehe!

We'll have to see if we can do it next time! I'd love to!!!!
I read and reread all three books of Agnes Neuton Keith about her years in Sandakan and with her small son in a Japanese concentration camp in Kuching. You would like her story of going up the rivers from Tawau through the jungle with leeches in their bed and having to carry the boats over the rapids and then arriving back down to the Kinabatangan river. I was right in front of her house but hadn't yet read the book so didn't go in, which I regret now. Planning to go back to Sabah in a few weeks and maybe back to Sandakan.
Hey Donna! Great to hear that you've read the books - I just gave Hannah "Land Below The Wind" for Christmas! So I'm waiting for her to finish it so that I can read it too!
Hope you have a fantastic time back in Sabah!!!
Hey Loz, don’t forget to go diving at sipadan island.. and while you’re in sandakan, I’m now in Bangkok for a short trip..😀 anyway, enjoy your stay in sandakan, and my warm regards to your mom and Hannah. It sure feels good around here, right? 😀😅
I wish we could have done but that's gonna have to be another time!! Have a great time over in Bangkok - hope you're there for pleasure, not business!! It always feels good around here my friend!

SABAH, PHILIPPINES
Sabah is Malaysia
United Nation grant Sabaan freedom and recognition for self determination in 1963. Sabahan choose to be Malaysian. By the way, Brunei never give Sabah to sulu sultan.
