The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is Still the Benchmark for Luxury Cars - Reviewing a 2015 S 550 W222

- For six generations, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has set the standard for what a luxury car should be. With every incarnation, the German maker pushed the bar forward on safety and luxury, unveiling technology and features that ultimately trickles down to other cars. The first SRS airbag system, the first anti-lock brakes, the first CAN Bus electronics package, the first pre-tensioned seat belts, and so on and so forth. Also, the technology has moves from nuts and bolts German engineering to a far more mass and machine produced feel, which has both benefits and drawbacks. But all-in-all, the S-Class is where it's at, luxury car-wise.
This W222 S-Class continues that legacy. As much as I want to complain about the autonomous features, and continuing disconnect between driver and machine, that technology somehow feels more appropriate on this car. In fact, it's the first S-Class that gives as much thought to the back seat passengers as it does those in front, primarily to gear up for the Chinese market (heavy on chauffeured services). This car can drive itself, park itself, and pamper the occupants in an opulence heretofore unheard of in a mass produced car. In many ways, it feels like Mercedes-Benz has its sights set more on Bentley and Rolls Royce than the standard BMW and Audi competition.
With technology and features too plentiful to list, this W222 has not lost sight of what it has to be before it can be anything else - the best mass produced luxury car made today.

A small but great feature I love on my own W222 is the windshield washer; small slits in the rubber wiper blades is where the heated fluid comes out, so you never have a dry wipe and zero overspray (though I miss being able to shower an annoying driver behind me). There’s also a delayed single wipe to catch any drips. It’s all part of what makes the S truly special… Das Beste oder Nichts!

Was at the dealer last week discovered an E350 has the 2.0 liter 4. I understand why my e63 has a 6.2, but a 2 liter "350" is a bit much. Miss the smooth 6.

I drive a 2010 W221. It lacks the autonomous features, but my God what a car! It's the most comfortable, most powerful luxury sedan I have ever driven. I love that car!

@@damirzanne Since I made this post I leased a Mazda CX9 for my wife that had the autonomous fearure. Once the novelty wore off I seldom used it. In fact, I found it annoying.

Bill, just found your channel earlier today and I like your style and sense of humour. Great videos, keep up the good work and I was impressed you mentioned Bulgaria 😳 I guess there was something in the news over there about what’s happening here.
Also l lived in Brussels for 12 years and the Belgian secret police would follow us around in blue S classes near the red light district and once one got out in a black suit came up to a group of us and asked what we were doing around here and we said just visiting friends and having a drink then they told us get out the area if we knew what's good for us, to which one of our friends told him "donder op aye man" then we all joined in and he got back in the car and pissed off hehe. He probably had a stash of uzzies in there as they normally do.

I own a 2015 w222 and love it. In my area, you don't see too many of these, and I like it that way. I thought my 2003 E55 would jade me to anything less than the AMG, but this car performs so well I don't miss the E55.

One of the funniest car reviews I have heard.
Mine had the Night View Assist option....had no idea that option was so rare on the 550. It should be standard equipment at that price, especially if they want to take on Rolls-Royce/Bentley and Aston Martin Lagonda.
Not too sure about the all black black wheels, lights grille etc. There needs to be chrome to have a contrast

Auto Europa Naples yes you should do a poll bill haha! I’m not sure if I like it or not. I’ll tell you one thing, piano black “ebony” trim pisses me off so much 🤣. I prefer walnut or maple or some classier Burl wood trim.
Bill, I appreciate the way your neurons fire, (or would you prefer misfire?!) in a free-associated way. You are a very knowledgeable person, and that much becomes apparent as you ramble on about whatever car you happen to be introducing to us. An example? Why not, Bill, as he walks towards a menacing looking Merc S Class: "This Mercedes S Class sedan with the such-and-such designation was one of 12,000 made in Stuttgart, in the second half of 2019, and more specifically, it was number 23 of the 50 produced in the basement of the factory, which in essence houses the new and super-secret special-projects office, during the months of September and October. If you will notice the gap here in the left half of the dash, and why they have to put gaps in dashboards in the 21st century, I will never know. But, what can you do?! It is what it is... Anyway, if you look into that gap, (which is .4 mm in width, so you will have to have very good eyes, (and it would help if your name was Steve Austin and you were a former astronaut who crashed his special aircraft into the ground at Warp 5!) You will notice that there is a faint red glow. Well, this is unique to this particular platform, as the data transfer point housed in this area was built in Helsinki, Finland, and it was during a particularly rough time when it was difficult to get the more common blue lights that the Finns opted for red replacement bulbs in around 40 Merc S Class platforms. By the way, never trust the Finns! They are always up to something, at least I think they are, and my good friend Agmar from an obscure village in the country side of Finland always had a favorite saying: "When you stab them, make it count!" Well, Agmar was in the Finnish special forces (at least that is what he tells us, which doesn't explain the 20-year stint he did in a prison in Norway, but I digress...) So, where was I... Oh! No!... Wait!!.... Did you hear that?! It is the roosters again! God d@mn it! Why are they still making such noise, at four-o clock in the afternoon I will never know! I think they know I am here, and it is no secret that they hate me! Maybe I should send Agmar after them. I bet he would give them a talking to!... Anyway, let me get inside this thing so that we can take it for a ride..."
