  • After almost two years of waiting, we finally picked up our Rivian R1S from the Factory in Normal, IL and immediately drove it 1000 miles back home to NJ. On day one we stopped to charge at Wally's, EA, and got our first experience of the Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) chargers. We learned a ton about the vehicle and share our first impressions and our driving review. Come along with us from Normal, IL to Cleveland, OH in our brand new Rivian R1S!

      Wow you really went for it! I’m very interested in what the range ends up being on that. The red is so beautiful, especially in person.

      I really love how it stands out and blends functionality with space, comfort, and a ton of fun. I hesitate to say it's perfect, but it's darn close. I hope Europe will get them eventually too!

    It’s a good thing you kept the Tesla for road trips. I would be too scared to rely on that network

      I didn’t watch far enough to see you have that adapter. That’s a life saver

      I’m glad we have both for now to give us options, but honestly the CCS network was completely fine for us on this trip. The Rivian chargers were flawless and worked as well as Tesla superchargers, there just aren’t that many of them. EA was fine with no major issues but we did have a few speed drops and had to move chargers twice. Overall it wasn’t a disaster though. It will definitely be far better when we can use more Tesla locations.

      @@CharlesWallace-q9i yep I have range anxiety. Heard so many stories of getting places and chargers not working. I’m still planning on getting an ev or hybrid since my day to day commute is no where near an issue. But what if I have to go far lol

      @@shannonthomass Understood. I have had a Rivian R1T for 3 months. No issues yet with charging on road trips (in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia so far) but I understand your concern.

      Congratulations! What is your configuration? Definitely ask your guide about it. They should be able to change your delivery location to Normal, IL and give you the option which also helps save time on transportation.

    I would get a RS1 and a model 3. That would be my EV lineup for sure.

      Having the R1S with our Model Y has been really solid for us. Though to be honest the Rivian is so nice it makes the Tesla really feel worse. Having backup of Tesla Supercharging though is still a very good idea until NACS comes to more vehicles. Thanks for watching!

    Interesting that you were only seeing 160-170kw. As long as i can precondition the battery for long enough, I see 200+kw below 50% battery on fully functional chargers

    • @Eventurefamily
      @Eventurefamily  10 місяців тому

      I think it is still figuring out preconditioning. I’m now usually seeing 200+ after a few minutes of charging. I wonder if on conserve mode it’s less likely to precondition.

    • @GregMcNamer
      @GregMcNamer 10 місяців тому

      @@Eventurefamily could be that it's unable to generate enough heat in conserve. Or maybe they just don't use as much heating/cooling energy to keep with the concept of conserve.

    How are you finding the range in the winter? Also, how is the charging experience here in NJ? Would be curious to know. We are about to pull the trigger as well here in Central NJ.

    • @Eventurefamily
      @Eventurefamily  9 місяців тому +1

      It’s been good still even in cold temperatures. I wish there were more options for conditioning the cabin and the battery and preconditioning before charging but we haven’t had any major issues or noticed considerable range loss. The only major impact came from much lower efficiency with the ski racks on, but that was expected.
      Charging around NJ is fine but not great. Much of the Northeast seems to have ample charging along major corridors but it’s more sparse off the main routes. Compared with Tesla, the CCS chargers are also usually either slower at rest stops or further off the highway at shopping centers. Getting access to the Superchargers will be very beneficial in 2024

  • @TonmoyGhosh

    How is the autonomous driving on these long highway drives compared to Tesla

    • @Eventurefamily
      @Eventurefamily  7 місяців тому +1

      There are pros and cons. The Rivian one is not available on non-highways, but on highways it’s excellent. I’ve never had a single phantom brake like in the Tesla. I also love that it lets you change lanes without disengaging it. I’ve heard that it tends to slow down too much on right turns but I haven’t yet experienced that.

  • @RyanLestage

    Do you have an adapter to use Tesla superchargers?

    • @Eventurefamily
      @Eventurefamily  9 місяців тому

      That isn’t available yet. Ford and GM are first and getting adapters in the late winter. Rivian claimed they will be getting them and access in early 2024, potentially spring. Definitely stay tuned as I’ll be covering that.

    20:05 this one proves again EV roadtrip infrastructures isn't ready yet except for tesla... which still isn't perfect but at least its doable.

    • @Eventurefamily
      @Eventurefamily  8 місяців тому +1

      I don't really agree based on our trip. That was one charger which is just being installed. We had a nearly flawless time on the entirety of our drive with 5 DCFC stops, all of which were CCS. It will help to have the Tesla ones opened up, but I wouldn't say that based on our trip(s) the non-Tesla networks are a major issue. I know around the country it's quite different, but in the east, I don't think it's as limiting as it's being made out to be.
