This Ben guy seems like a stand up Dad. He's thorough and transparent. In the event I decide to go the EV route with my next vehicele - it will be because of Ben's review. It's nice to see a real world account of EV ownership.
Wow that is awesome on a standard range Lightning. We need more people to long there charging sessions like this so we can show how this is very possible. Sounds like form some comments it was even cheaper than a gas V-150, I do wonder how the efficiency is for a gas F-150 with 40 mph winds. In a short drive I was in win like that in my F-150 and it was like 11 mpg and that was under 80 mph, which is the speed on the I-15 in southern Utah.
As a fellow Lightning SR owner with a family of 4, I love seeing Ben's content! It really shows how practical and flexible the Lightning is for a family.
Awesome video Ben! You are a good dad my friend! Also having a family and an EV, this was a great video. I’ve done Road Trips without the kids in our Ioniq 5 because of charger anxiety. Feel better watching this and always planning my route. I’ve got V2L and I didn’t think about having a mini kitchen with it on the road.
Thanks Ben and the whole family for showing how you can experience a fun vacation in an EV. And with the growing non-Tesla access to the huge Tesla charging network, you can take the type of vehicle you need on an easy and fun trip. Cheers and well done on the video, it's the communication and presentation style Ben showed that made the video work.
Glad you had a nice trip. And good to see the F-150 charged well at the Superchargers. Hopefully that will continue. My thought is that Tesla will become the Exxon, Mobil, Shell, etc. of EV charging. BTW, we have a new V4 Supercharger going in by me. V4 has the long cables and in some stalls they put the charging stand right in the middle so the spot works for Tesla and non-Teslas,
We picked up or F150 Lightning last week. Lariat, ER. Absolutely love it. Recieved my Ecogenix Tesla Supercharger adapter the other day and drove to a Tesla Supercharger and it worked perfectly!! Too be real we won't be traveling very far in that truck. But for county wide it's fantastic especially if you can charge at home.
Excellent job - thanks for sharing that experience! Hope to meet you one of those days on a Road Trip or Ford meetup in our Lariat ER - it’s is a fantastic machine to travel in.
One thing we have been trying to do is find charging at our place we are staying at and charging over night at even lower rates than DC fast charging. Sometimes the hotel gives the charging as complimentary although the complimentary charging seems to be going away.
If Ford can get 450 miles with a 15 min. charge, to 80%, they would be selling these like hotcakes. Tesla knows that the key to the kingdom is through charging. Great Vid. Thanks.
Really well put together video that showcases real world living with an EV. One tip, please show the charging screens in truck when charging on the Superchargers, that's what I came here to see.
Finally a real world video. I a Standard Rage but haven't gotten the adapter yet. I live in southe texas. The only way i charge is at home. Charging stations here are crap. Just dealerships. Make more videos with SR lightning. Also would appreciate a video with normal mode vs sport mode road trip.
I'm surprised. I have a rivian and I just planned a trip from denver to st. george and the only EA stop is in green river. (I have the tesla adapter. NIce video.
Electrify America chargers have been garbage for a long, long time now. It's amazing they haven't done anything about it. With Tesla super chargers now available for use with the Lightning, I'm thinking those EA chargers are going to collect a lot of dust.
This is what I stress to anyone that asks me about getting an EV. If you want to road trip get a Tesla, Ford or Rivian. Without access to the Tesla Supercharging network a road trip will be more stressful. Its that simple.
so How is it going with tesla network charging your lighting? been debating between tesla Y and lighting for a while. I will be using ev 99% in town, However, once in a while I will take it out of town. By the way I have a bolt right now and took it twice of a 6 Hour round trip and what a horrible experience. Never again. lol I hope with lighting will be a better experience
$174 seems high. In my f-150 3.5 eco boost v6 on the interstate I can get 21 mpg. For 950 miles/21 mpg is 46 gals at $4.50 /gallon that is only $207. I have no problem paying the extra $30 bucks for one stop and no hassle. You probably could have made CA in 2/3 the time. So is it really worth it?
I agree. But, most of the time people are running around their city regionally. Long road trips are rare. A longer range EV with 320 to 350 miles available is the way to go. The standard range of 240 miles in this Lightning is a bit short. The lowest cost rates for Supercharging are in the morning and at night. Afternoon and rush hour rates are the most expensive. So, leave home in the morning with a full battery, recharge in the morning after driving 3 or 4 hours, drive to your destination by afternoon. Then, recharge it later at night rates. It's pretty easy to plan long distance trips like that. If taking a 1,000 mile or 2,000 mile or more round trip with two people, driving is actually a waste of time in hours, days off, hotels, money and vehicle wear and tear. Take a jet and get there in four hours or less. Rent a vehicle at your destination.
When I try to Supercharge my 2023 Lightning via Plug-and-Charge and my A2Z adapter, I always seem to get a "charge station fault" in the truck. But when I activate the same charger via Tesla's app, it works fine. And afterwards, that charging session is displayed in FordPass under the Charge Logs. Why won't Plug-And-Charge (which of course I've activated) just work like in these videos?!? Since I'm not using using their "approved" adapter (might get that in August), I probably cannot ask Ford or Tesla. Thanks for any/all advice.
With the insane headwinds I was facing, I was traveling about 120/140 miles between each charging station. I can easily get 200 miles inbetween stations in ideal conditions.
To be fair towards EA, their network of chargers did not leave them stranded even though they didn't meet the standards of what most of us would expect. Delivering 50 KWh of juice basically demonstrates what all Volt owners go through when they're road tripping.
I'm of the opinion that, "well at least they weren't stranded" is a poor bar to measure the reliability and consistency of a network. The comment essentially alludes to being ok with subpar charging with app->station miscommunication alongside stalls labeled with power outputs that are not actually being produced. That's not a great measure of success just because it's only what a Volt or Bolt owner can experience. Met a lot of new to EV road trippers at those stations who were ready to quit EV's because of their experience. But they weren't stranded. So maybe they should just suck it up and be ok with it despite their vehicle being capable of better experiences?
I have a Ford Lightning. Awesome for a daily driver. Way cheaper maintenance and fuel cost. But .... sucks on road trips. Charging takes way too long for any EV. Gonna keep a gas burner for the road trips.
But wait 17 cents per mile is equivalent to 20 mpg which any of the gas F150 will beat that and cutting the trip in half. I stick with one gas vehicle and an EV for local errands home. I would never do a road trip on an EV unless totally necessary
Seven charging stops in 900 miles is pretty tough. The unpredictability of how much energy is being used, and how much range varies is frustrating. If my math is correct, my pickup, at 17 mpg, would have cost about $200 with fewer stops. Interesting. I think my choice of a hybrid is currently the best. The issue is infrastructure currently. In a few years we hope that will be corrected.

Owner reviews are the best reviews.

More like this! Ben did a great job. Let’s see more family road trip type videos for us families!
Thank you. I'm planning a road trip this coming summer, and I won't be stopping at an EA station.
If you can use Tesla over EA, always choose that. That’s what our experience taught us!

Nice to see a dirty truck! All the trucks, Jeeps and Broncos around here are squeaky clean.
We live 9,000 ft elevation in the Rockies, and it’s a 16 mile dirt road to get to town, so yeah, it’s not a pavement princess 😂
Brilliant! He's a natural! More 'real' user road trips please!
Thank you! I try to be authentic and well..me!

Great video. Nice to hear the kids’ perspective and see the power outlets in use.

Hotel next to us had charging but was requiring $0.69 per kWh. Or I drive to Tesla after 9pm for a 20 minute charge at $0.18

Good to know. Honestly at the moment Ford provides no information on the dash when charging. You have to rely on the Tesla app for information

A George Foreman Grill - so smart. I thought about bringing that on my next camping trip.
Max, how is your Mom's ordering of the R1S going? Any updates on that front?
She loves her dual motor R1S! I won’t be flying home for a while but she took delivery two weeks ago and is used to one pedal and daily driving it
@@outofspecguide Yay!!! Content to come later. To be continued...Now let's work on Dad. Just kidding.
@@outofspecguide Someday, I want to get the R3X (teal, orange highlights and palomino interior).
I remember Ben. He is off-grid. I am not as of yet but getting there.

Ben has the hook up to be able to get a Ford adapter.
yes mine not going to here until sept
Got hooked as soon as I saw the Aussies

Does the ‘signet surge’ damage the battery?
No link! (Hint: Good to do what you say you’ll do.)
Is your lightning standard range or extended range
Hi Ben, on average how much kWh were you getting at Tesla Superchargers on each charge?
When I try to Supercharge my 2023 Lightning via Plug-and-Charge and my A2Z adapter, I always seem to get a "charge station fault" in the truck. But when I activate the same charger via Tesla's app, it works fine. And afterwards, that charging session is displayed in FordPass under the Charge Logs. Is the car software up to date?
So with the standard battery, how many miles between charging stops in the real world?
With the insane headwinds I was facing, I was traveling about 120/140 miles between each charging station. I can easily get 200 miles inbetween stations in ideal conditions.
Love to know your total kWh charged and total miles for a Mi/kWh calculation…..
We have a popular V2 super charger and non Teslas keep showing up to charge? Don't they know it doesn't work on every Tesla charger? 🙄
To be fair towards EA, their network of chargers did not leave them stranded even though they didn't meet the standards of what most of us would expect. Delivering 50 KWh of juice basically demonstrates what all Volt owners go through when they're road tripping.

Did EA charge you a session charge each time you switched dispensers?
Yes, they did. If you change stalls, you are essentially ending the charge session and reactivating a new session with the new stall
If that first charging stop was to illustrate how crappy the Electrify America network is, mission accomplished!
The goat... 😂😂😂
My Californian ass: “I hate the sun!”
Let's add charger anxiety to range anxiety....
I have a Ford Lightning. Awesome for a daily driver. Way cheaper maintenance and fuel cost. But .... sucks on road trips. Charging takes way too long for any EV. Gonna keep a gas burner for the road trips.
Can't wait to see someone charge an EV Motorcycle with this truck!
roadtrips in EV's are too fun! Tesla' superchargers make it simple. They still have some crappy locations, tucked away, but that is changing slowly.
But wait 17 cents per mile is equivalent to 20 mpg which any of the gas F150 will beat that and cutting the trip in half. I stick with one gas vehicle and an EV for local errands home. I would never do a road trip on an EV unless totally necessary
