    This has been a long standing problem that Ford has ignored. They issued recall on 1990-93 dual tank systems, but refuses to admit the problem continued to later years, and issue a recall for those years as well.. My 1996 F150 XL 4.9L with dual tanks has this exact problem. Ford is a real scumbag company for ignoring this. Sounds like a good class action lawsuit.

    I have a 1991 F-150 xlt lariat with 5.0 V-8 & 5 speed overdrive manual transmission and dual fuel tanks. Since i bought it a few weeks ago i have only been filling only the front tank and the average gas mileage seems to be about 7mpg(i expected to get around 12 mpg). Is it possible for the front tank to vent fuel into the rear tank while driving and explain my problem???
    Also the exhaust smells terrible...hint?
    I'm new to this type of truck, but have a general understanding of auto-mechanics so any insight would be appreciated.

    Hello, I have a 92 F150 302. I've had it a couple of years from my father in law. I think there is probably some sludge in the tanks because i have to replace the fuel filter about every 6 months . Here is my problem. I noticed my rear tank was low on fuel and when i got out at my sons house it ran out of fuel and cut off. I then switched to my front tank and i started right up. I went and filled the rear tank and when i got home i smelled fuel. Well this kept smelling and then i noticed fuel pouring out at the rear axle. The front tank is pumping to the rear and the fuel just pours out. I assume the whole float assembly needs changed on the rear tank. All help appreciated!

    Hey WIll great video - I've got a 1997 F250 with a 460 that is acting similarly i.e. front tank filling rear tank. I just had the front fuel pump replaced - rear fuel tank appears ok. I don't know if the mechanic crossed the return lines or if it is a check valve problem. It appears that the rear tank does not fill the front tank? I did notice that the rear tank overflowed when i removed the gas gas without ever adding gas to rear tank. Does anyone know if you don't fill the tanks all the way if it will act ok? So far it has but any help is greatly appreciated!

    • @Genosisnt
      @Genosisnt 4 роки тому

      To be honest it sounds like the check valve in one of the two is failing, causing one of your tanks to send to the other. Does one of the tanks run bad and stutter and try to die out on you at all? Try to keep a siphon hose on you so that whenever it starts filling up too much you can take some out to prevent damage to your fuel lines.

    • @Genosisnt
      @Genosisnt 4 роки тому +1

      I just did a little more research, you should get your fuel delivery module checked out in the front tank, seems like that makes the front tank send to the back.

    • @dirkgriggs3353
      @dirkgriggs3353 4 роки тому +1

      @@Genosisnt Thanks for your help - it looks like that is what is happening. The only one time it ran bad like that was when both tanks were completely full. Since then I fill the front and then switch to use up most of what is in the rear until i refuel the front (so it has a place to go) and it has run perfectly until I get it fixed.

    I had my front tank pump go out. It started to jump, sputter, and die in the first tank until after a week or so it would not start in the front anymore. I started to run off the rear only, and experienced the same problem with overflow out of the front. Now 2 months later, the rear pump is dying on me and acting like the front was previously. Would I need to change both pumps to not experience overflow? I assume the gas would run front to back or vise versa depending on which check valve/pump is bad? Also curious as to why both crapped out near the same time. Any advice appreciated.

I replaced my front pump a couple years ago and use it regularly for work and it is now transferring fuel from rear to front even when just sitting in the driveway for a week. I filled both tanks and it sat for a week and i noticed it smelled like gas by it and when i started it up a week later the damn rear was at a quarter tank!! I think i will just fully replace both again for good measure and hopefully it will be done for a couple years. I wish you could convert to just one 35 gallon tank cheaply. I have a 1990 Ford F150 that dumps all of my fuel from my rear tank to my front tank.
    My rear tank & pump are brand new, front tank & pump are old, & do not work.
    I've searched hi & lo for a fuel tank selector valve, but I promise, I don't see one anywhere, period.
    I was told there has to be one somewhere.. But for the life of me, there is not one on my truck.
    Could it be that I have a faulty fuel tank switch? Would that switch cause my rear tank to dump all of my fuel into the front tank?
    I've put my old fuel pump check valve on the new pump.
    If the switch isn't the issue, or there is a fuel tank selector valve hidden in one of those hard to find places, then what could be the issue?
    Is there a fuel tank switch relay?
    If so, would you happen to know where these things are located..
    I'm really stuck.. I put $50.00 in my rear tank, went 5 miles, came back almost empty.
    Please help, this is a heavy concern..

      Behind the rear axle is a fuel control module. They go bad a lot. My son had the problem, and it would die, sometimes going around a curve, or sometimes at a stop sign. Then it would come back. The truck finally quit. We checked youtube, and that is how we found out. He crawled under the truck, and it completley fell apart. no need to remove the tanks.

    • @Branden_Tarrant
      @Branden_Tarrant 7 років тому

      John Godiska I believe the fuel delivery module is mounted to the pump inside the tanks on the 1996 F-150. I think they started putting them externally on later models. Unless your son's was a 1996. Everything I've read says these things are tough little boogers to deal with. I still haven't replaced mine, just learned how to manage it. It seems to do better with half a tank or more. I've also noticed the battery gauge dipping when it happens, so I might check my alternator as well.

      What size bed do you have? if its an 8 foot bed like mine, your front tank is 19 gallons. Then the part number would be SP2006H from Spectra. Its about $115 from rockauto.com

    This is what was happening to me...when I bought the truck, used, the gage didn't work on the front tank, so I used only the rear...15 years later , after replacing my fuel pump 4 times, I noticed the front tank was filling up with gas, so much, that the rear fuel gas pump burned out....my mechanic, after calling him, said that it was the rear.fyel pump,bit that I should initially be using the front gas tank...I explained that it was filling with gas, and that it was leaking...so what he suggested was to replace the front gas tank, put a new fuel pump in the front gas tank, put a new fuel pump in the rear tank, only use the front tank, unless I was going on a long trip, then put gas in both tanks, so now I use the front gas tank as my primary, and still haven-'t filled the rear tank....and it runs perfect..no loss of gas, the gage works, and I've had no problems since...hopefully this continues

    I'm working on a 86 ford F 250 460 engine dual tanks with a bad fuel selector valve. Ford told me that it would cost $430. Part # E67B-9F271-AA for that valve! INSANE! I think the person or persons who come up with these prices should go to jail. Sure want to go out and buy one of their products. Not me, no more money pits for me. Both Ford and GM are getting crazy with their costs, driving their vehicles. I told the owner, pick one tank and give up on the other one. Might find one in a Pick and Pull,,,,,

    Walking down the street from where you work is information unneeded you talk a lot about things that's irrelevant to the issue
