  • KEY WEST BAY REEF 196 REBUILD- Completely Restoration and Lots Of Upgrades!
    So I hooked a buddy of mine up and took this Key West Bay Reef 196 project on and it came out awesome! Repowered it with a brand new Mercury 150hp and pretty much put everything new on it. Check out the video and tell what you think!

    That is a nice transom plate! Good job. I would have bought a tent to cut down on the sunburn, but I have been dealing with skin cancer since my early 20’s… I can’t stop fishing though.

    one thing. I'd guess that the bolts sucked in because the transom may be rotted. 🤔

      Nope full composite. I see people do this all the time and over torque with air impact guns. I checked and transom was good

    Looks totally awesome. I would be more than happy with that boat. Just a shame he had biden signs in his garage. Hopefully he has better judgment on the water.

    Brand new except for the fiberglass...does fiberglass get old? 🤔 it can get damaged, but old? 🤔
    Damages repaired ++ and she's a beauty again 👍

    I have the same boat and its getting pretty rough after 23 years of use. My transom has the same issue as that one did and was wondering where you obtained that transom brace from? Also, you did a phenomenal job redoing this boat, looks great!

      I got the plate from a local welding shop. 1/4 inch aluminum and they used a metal brake to bend it. Thanks I think it came out awesome but it was a lot more work than I wanted .

    I just purchased a 2003 keywest bayreef 196. I’m looking to do some of what you did. I want to change the wash down pump and stuff like that but I can’t find any info on parts and install guides. Could you point me in the right direction. Thank you for your time. Ps. The boat you redid looks amazing!

      Actually my buddy's boat wash down system was working. one of the only things that did actually work. So I didn't't really mess with that.

    It looks 100% better without the side rails, do you have a video showing how to remove them?

      They just unscrewed and had to fill the holes. Wish I did get a video of the process as it came out real good

    Where did you pick up that leaning post? I’m working on my new to me 196 BR. Would you mind posting the dimensions of it? My main concern is getting around the back of it.

      I had a local fab shop make it. Basically I just had them make it to cover the holes from the old swing cooler seat.

    How thick is the transom plate and is it stainless stainless?

      It is 1/4 in Aluminum plate. I had it bent at a local shop

      I had it made from local welding shop. It was 1/4 inch thick aluminum plate and they bent it for me. I just measured transom thickness and made a drawing for them. Wasn't to too bad, I think it costed me like 300 bucks. But was good to have little extra piece of mind.

      Yes it was made by local welding shop. Measured the transom thickness and had them bend 1/4" aluminum for it.

      I use 3M Perfect it followed by 3m Finesse It. hen I wax really good with Collinite 885

    $5500. You got robbed. Got exact same boat with a Yamaha 225 with 39 hours. Thing was kept in a warehouse and looked like it was 2 days old.. Mint condition with every bell n whistle. Paid $7900 in Boca and a mint magic tilt trailer

    i cringed when you didnt turn the motor to the opposite side while tightening the mounting bolts. Definitely scratched the plastics

    I bought same exact boat used. The wiring was shit. Actually the whole boat was just set up poorly. Probably spent $15k to get it right and it still sucked. Barely sold it for what I bought it for. Never will I buy Key West again.

      Yeah I was disappointed with quality as well. Found some things that didn’t sit well with me too. Fixed them and my buddy is happy with it for now. But I totally agree with ya

      It was locked, and had been sitting for a while like that. Plus my buddy had a brand new Mercury 150 in a crate and was looking to a decent boat to put it on.
