I had a student today similar but different. He described him self as 25+ years ago being a strong skier. Now intimidated by new equipment he can't force the skis around like he used to. Then he confided he had neuropathy in both legs can't feel his feet caused by multiple fused vertebrae in his lumbar and neck. ex military he was shot in the chest and survived two helicoptor crashes. he said he could feel the fronts of the boots with his shins so we went with that as a starting point. From there we worked out how to transfere weight from foot to foot while not able to feel you feet This required exagerated upper body movements that were the opposite of his previous experience. My quiet assessment was that his past skiing was totally in the back seat and cuff pressure was never a thing he used. Stong willed and physical he forced every movement with violent upper body contortions. It works less now even better. thanks to age, injury and previous experience.. My role was counselor and therapist rather than ski instructor this was and adaptive lesson with a wounded veteran who had no sense of his limitations. He wants to ski again and he will return and I will continue to counsel him avoid opinionated observations and relate my experiences coaching military skiing groups and adaptive lessons of many varieties. .

Go Jenny! What I love about Deb's videos is that they are real people in real situations, and Deb is very focused on the student. So many ski videos are just an excuse for someone to show off. I always learn something from Deb's videos, AND become inspired to be a better teacher.

I love that in between olympians and professionals you show 'normal' people skiing at various levels. And seeing it through the filter of your teaching style helps me understand how I can improve and problems that i am facing. Outstanding as usual.

I will definitely recommend this video to anyone looking to teach someone or simply improve their own skills. Being a retired high school teacher and tennis coach I believe in your positive teaching style. Students need to build confidence and feel positive about their progress. Your positive attitude makes them want to keep trying. I also believe in crossover skills that your student brought to her return to skiing. I am a big fan of mountain bike trail riding because it requires many of the same skills as skiing. I ride 3-5 days a week 8 months and ski full time the next 4 months. As always I appreciate your videos .

This brings back memories of when I got back into skiing after a 13 yr hiatus. I had thought I was a pretty good skier when left skiing. When I got back into it, I realized how my skiing “skills” were a result of the enthusiasm of youth vs actual skill…. I could have done with an instructor like you, a person actually skilled in teaching skiing. Recently I came across a couple of pairs of ski boots from my childhood days. Lace up leather boots with hard rubber soles, grooves in the sides of the heals to retain the bear trap bindings and a leather strap and buckle across the ankle for added support (the “power strap”). I blame these for my bad habit of being in the back seat as there is almost no way to get forward on those things…. LOL
Hope you are able to a follow up and show more of Jenny’s progression. Great to sees what she accomplished in this one video.

Such a great and inspiring video Deb! You are truly a kind and patient instructor and anyone who has you as a teacher is very lucky. Having just started my ski season, I can really relate to Jenny’s comment about stopping when you are tired. At that point, you aren’t in control and your own safety (plus those around you!) becomes an issue. Learning to recognize leg fatigue helps prevent falls and in turn, keeps your confidence up! Thanks for another great video Deb and keep them coming!

I know what I'M doing but sometimes at a loss for the words, explanations, etc. Your "always be positive comment...", I need to find better sayings than "you leaned back" etc. As someone who makes whitewater vids for summer employment I know what goes into making them, thank you very much for your time and effort. Enjoyed video! How about a video on when to use a pole plant / pole tap. World Cup racers from slalom to downhill don’t use them, although slalom racers use their forearms to move the gates away from their path. Pole plant/tap is useful in the bumps, on the steeps and in powder but I question its use elsewhere. There must be enough here to stimulate a healthy discussion on pole plants / taps.

I returned to skiing after over 40 years away. Didn't want to have lessons as I believed that my level would go from beginner to advanced within an hour. So, indoor skiing in UK, signed saying I could do linked turns and made use of a lift pass.
First run: so scared, a little traverse and a snowplow stop; a snowplow turn and another traverse. I spent the first half-hour expecting them to tell me to stop as I was obviously not good enough.
Luckily, after about an hour it was if I never went away (except I was skiing on a short indoor beginner level run).
