My 336 / .35 Rem has the old red hard as nails rubber pad on it and it is a shoulder buster but, it "sticks" on the shoulder without movement so I will keep it.
Video does weird things with perspective. This plate is probably 1/4" thick in the center and 3/8" thick at the top and bottom. Prety close to other original plates I have. That is a coincidence. Thanks for watching!
10 years ago I went through this same project on my 1895 Marlin. I removed a limbsaver pad and fitted a thin Marlin Red rubber recoil pad. It turned out amazing. A few days ago I dug it out of the back of the safe and the dang thing is turning white. Any suggestions on getting that red color back? Great video once again.
Interesting. If it's just white on the edges you could use some Hopes #9 and 400 grit paper. if it's on the back textured part of the pad I would try cleaning it lightly with a rag and Hopes # 9. Good luck!
For some reason the ol Marlin 35 Remington guns are stupidly expensive to buy. They go for big dollars. I had one about 30 years ago and bought new was very reasonably priced. Guess I should have kept it. Don't understand the pad from a recoil standpoint because the 35 isn't a hard kicker. Guess they maybe needed a little more length of pull . I think you may have done that before. Good fix on the gun. She looks like good now...
Thanks, and yes they do demand a little more money. I have this one listed on Guns International for sale. It has some use on it but will still make a great hunting rifle. you can check it out here. $699.00 gets it shipped to your house. www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/marlin-rifles-jm/marlin-336-jm-stamped-in-35-remington-1975-includes-all-shipping-and-credit-card-fees-.cfm?gun_id=102657199&cdn_bp=1
Do you put any finish on the stock before you put the butt plate back on? I loved the video could ,have used that tool on some butt pad installation I have done in the past.
@@Turnbullcustomguns you BETTER stock up on it , ALL oil finishes have been OUTLAWED by our governor as of 2025 check with your local professional paint suppliers if you think I'm delusional , acetone is also done and gone as of January 1st 2025
Another professional job well done.

I'm staring at my 336 while watching this, what a coincidence. That plate looks awful thin compared to mine.

Thanks for another interesting video. What grit are you using on the belt sander? 120?
Yes you nailed it. It cuts well and I can polish off the sand scratches.
With the white spacer at the grip cap, it should have the one on the but plate too. Nice job though.
That is a good point. I didn’t even think of that. Next time we’ll make sure to put one in. This gun has already sold. Thanks for watching.

I guess that is a b sguare jig and no longer available?
Excellent but 3/4 inch shorter lop than before,Hopefully dont matter to customer.
The stock hadn't been cut... Just had a longer pad installed.

Yes thanks for pointing that out, It's important to seal the end grain of the wood with some finish. I use true oil or Toung oil.
