*"Hatred and fear are a mirror; love is a window."*
That's just fucking DEEP man. Basically, hate and fear are reflections of ourselves and the things we hate and fear, whereas love is hope for something better that we've yet to experience. What a way with words, that Guillermo del Toro.

The key is to embrace the deep and for this fear must be overcome because within the crushing depths is where we bury our sins.

When you look at a mirror, its like trying to look through a window... but the view is always getting blocked by YOU. (your reflection)
Its exactly how fear and hate works.
Its so very easy to love, but ego can get in the way just as easily and it turns into fear and hate.

Amazing that Flanagan's childhood fear was being alone in the dark; I feel like I have never seen ANYONE film a dark, empty room like he can, it's terrifying

I was intrigued by how they were scared kids and talked about it as if it were a pattern among horror professionals. I'm a big horror fan (but don't work with it) and I was a relatively "brave" kid, in terms of not being very superstitious. I felt comfortable when alone and would stay up late by myself to watch horror movies on TV since I was 5 or 6 years old.

‘Horror is healing’ - this has SO many layers. Horror is like trauma and is uncomfortable and terrifying by nature, but if you work through it properly and find your courage, you come out the other side alive, wiser and able to move forward

"Horror can be such an effective mirror" and "We are all monsters at the end of the day, can we live with that?", how accurate words and how monumental lessons from these masters of the genre. Damn, what a fascinating insight into the minds of two masters of horror this was! I watched Mike Flanagan's whole body of work, and quite a lot of Guillermo del Toro's movies, too... I have always been inexplicably drawn to horror, even as a child! I remember picking the latest Goosebumps novel as a kid and anticipating the moment when I could finally sit down and read it ahaha
I think a lot of what they both said about horror being healing is spot on. We could even look at the lovers of this genre as people who constantly seek self-therapy! I, for one, know that I'm sort of capable of alienating my stress and anxiety whenever I experience someone else's demons... Momentarily delegating MY demons to the screen/written page. In short, the true purpose of horror IS to make you feel less alone, just not in a scary, hopeless way.
