There's an interview where SQ takes credit for JJs success. Perhaps on some level she was an *influence* but, JJ earned her success with blood, sweat, tears and damn near her life. That heirarchy thing again. Sorry but, SQ just doesn't have the same level of success, even factoring in her popularity in the UK Nope! A lesson in egotism: SQ stated that JJ was "disappointed to find out that I was straight!" ( then chuckled). Well, Ms. Q revealed on her old MySpace profile, under status, that she's "bisexual". How do I know? In 2008, I wrote to SQ asking her if she would wish my bass player, who had crushed on SQ for years, a happy birthday. Suzi was very generous in doing so without any problem. My friend then visited SQs MySpace profile, noticing said status. So, what's this straight business? Did she forget she came out as Bi? JJ may have had a school girl crush (and I emphasize Girl) but nothing more. SQ stated that in the 70s, JJ would wait after shows, in hopes of hooking up with her. Really, Suzi? Really...? JJ was under age, a minor. WTF difference would it have made if it were true? Jump back, Jack, get off your high horse, Suzi! For crying out loud, woman! Last, and this one is a blatant display of jealousy on SQs part...Suzi Q., Self professed Queen of Rock, has called JJ, (when JJ was H-O-T in the 80s & 90s), "Clone Jett" Those in combination with the other snarky things SQ has muttered about JJ, hell, I don't blame JJ for barely acknowledging SQ in the Bad Reputation documentary. At least JJ didn't reciprocate because she's just not full of herself. She doesn't need to boast or brag because JJ knows who she is when she gets in stage to perform.
@@nickdamit - I love Joan dearly, and can see how Suzi's comments would be hurtful to her on some level (even though I totally get where Suzi is coming from too). But, it's not entirely accurate to say that Joan never reciprocated. She has, in fact. In one interview, Joan said that she (Joan) wrote her own music, whereas when Suzi was having her success, she was "contrived". This was said when Joan was obviously miffed from an interviewer egging her on, by asking her about comments Suzi made. However, it falls flat, because Joan had her biggest success with songs she didn't write either- same as Suzi. Yet, they both are capable songwriters too. So, in that respect, they should not be critical of each-other- but Joan was at the time. Joan also suggested that Suzi must be "bitter"... I say all this to say that we need to be careful of putting one down while praising another. Neither is perfect. It's best to try to understand both of them, rather than putting one on a pedestal, because then, you are not really knowing who they really are. Hence, Joan, like Suzi, is far from perfect. She has said her fair share of things that she wouldn't want repeated now- I can assure you. Granted, she does try to always be mindful of how she comes across. But, this is miss "I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation" we're talking about here- so she has had her slip-ups... I will say though, the irony is that she seems to care about her reputation and how she comes across far more than Suzi does about hers- which may account for Suzi's more frequent faux-pas as far as comments... As for the MySpace page, I don't think it was really her. Are you sure it wasn't someone pretending to be her? Because it was said of her by her one-time manager that she was straight as far back as 2004- so unless she had an epiphany or something after that, I don't think she was lying. OR, he was referring to how she identified back in the 1970s, and then after that, she started to realize she was bi. That happens. Doesn't change the fact that when Joan was crushing on her (and she was- majorly! Just go listen to "Gotta Get Out Tonight" if you wanna know how much!), that Suzi wasn't open to it then. And as far as Joan being underage back then, it didn't matter to Joan. A] this was the sexy 70s. People were far less concerned with that back then, and B] I doubt it was much of a factor to Suzi either, because she too, crushed on older people, and even got pregnant by a married man when she was around the same age Joan was back when Joan wanted her. It wasn't an issue for either of them. One-sided desire was the issue.
I've always had a great deal of love and respect for her she's the ultimate rock chick who's a survivor and she doesn't give a fuck what people say you go girl I love you Joan
What an icon. She beat the odds and transcended the norms to shape not only a unicorn all-female band, but arguably a style of rock-and-roll that influenced generations. Music moved wide and broad thanks to the talent and vision of this incredible woman. I Love Rock and Roll.
@Rock Stone - I get all that. And I respect the hell out of her drive back then, and her success now. I still hear a slight similarity in their speech. That's not meant as an offense, but just an observation.
@Rock Stone - While I can't empathize with that "party till you drop" mania, I admire her will to fight her way back from every obstacle, even the self-imposed ones.
I enjoyed hearing every word Joan had to say. IMO she not is not only a groundbreaking iconic rocker, but a present day powerhouse. My feeling is she worked darn hard for her success.
Driving a taxi at around 2:00AM in Portland, Oregon in the early 80’s I was flagged down on a street corner a couple blocks from Satyricon. Joan Jett climbed in the back seat and said, “Take me to the airport motherf*ker!”. As I turned on the meter and started to pull away from the curb she said, “Do you know who the f*ck I am, motherf*ker?”. I said, “No, who the f*ck are you?”. She said, I’m motherf*kin Joan Jett, motherf*ker!”. And off to the airport we went. She had no luggage, and when we got to the airport she pulled a $50 bill out of her bustierre and handed it to me, and said “Keep the change motherf*cker!”. No lie, probably the best 14 minutes of my life.
You go, girl!!!!! I love that Joan is ready to talk about things that are swept under the rug about music, rock and roll, women artists, etc. It's very inspiring. I can only play rock in Guitar Hero. Bless her for making it big and following her passion!!!!!!!
Her voice sounds like she's been fighting and screaming her entire life. For rock and roll that's tough and raw, but for life's moments off stage it can be quite sad.
@@John-un5uz Was she a big smoker? I've seen tons of pics and videos of her and the only time I really recall her with cigarettes was in the Runaways days. I assumed she quit early on. In one 1981 interview she said she didn't even drink on tour, because it was bad for the voice. Though apparently she smokes something like a joint before recording, to roughen her voice a bit for that.
The Runaway days she always had a butt in her mouth. I quit 20 years ago and the 30 years I smoked before that definitely had an effect on my vocal chords.
@@John-un5uz 30 years of smoking I can certainly see doing vocal damage. I assumed Joan would have smoked for much less time than that. Maybe a lifetime of singing will also change and damage the voice? But ultimately, I don't know. I think she still sounds good though. She's just not 19 anymore 😊
Joan isn't old ever she's like fine wine getting better and better with age only tastier she does no wrong ever i stand up for her always she is rock and roll

A true pioneer from my childhood, hard bluesy punk rock & roll.. She reminded us what "ROCK&ROLL" REALLY was.. it was intimate, it was honest..it was the taboo that everyone feels, that thing the world wouldn't turn without.. I recently discovered THE WARNING.. 3 YOUNG LADIES FROM MEXICO..WHO CARRY ON WHAT JOAN STARTED!🖤🤙
This is the first time I have seen her interviewed! She comes across as a very humble, honest sincere person. I always liked her music, congrats on the Hall of Fame induction, she has earned it.
I've been to a couple of JJ concerts and she is always personable, friendly, and interactive with the audience. A really nice lady that appreciates those who appreciate her. Not to mention her and her band sound awesome -tight and clean.
Joan is an example of never giving up. Helps to have the talent she had, but still she fought to make something of herself. And it paid off big time. Her music is still fresh today....Thank you Joan!
As a rocker Joan kicks ass, it also doesn't hurt that she's hot. She let's everyone know when she's on stage she's in charge, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Never been a huge fan, but certainly like some of her songs. I had the chance to see her live a couple months ago in San Antonio and was totally blown away. What a straight forward ass kicking rock n roll performance. The whole band was on point.
I was in a small band in New Jersey in the 80's. Her picture was on the wall of all of the dives we played in. She really paid her dues, I have a lot of respect for that. She is a really hard worker and a great rocker. Great interview.
Its hard for me to believe any group of kids had it better then teens in the late 70s, early 80s in Southern California. Roller rinks, no junkies living at the beach, banana seats, short shorts. We would go to places amd it seemed like there were thousands of kids just doing whatever we wanted. I got beat up 3 times in one summer, so it's not like it was super safe, but it was amazing.
Joan your still a beautiful person 😘🇺🇸😇 God bless you sweetie.... Danced to your music many o nights 🤗now I'm too old hahaha. I guess I'm not we're about the same age never too old to party and have a good time! 😘💟😄

Joan was awesome! Music back in the late 70s early 80s was by far the most creative there ever was! And Joan did here part to contribute her creative way. Thank you for that.
I saw her Joan Jett and the Blackhearts during the 80's twice and the energy was intense! Once when she opened for REO Speedwagon and a show where Britny Fox opened for her. Good memories and almost 40 years later she's still touring!
I remember in 1981 I was going to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts at Leeds University on the I Love Rock n Roll tour. I was in town earlier on and turned to see this gorgeous Joan Jett lookalike, she smiled at me and I smiled back. Being only a tiny woman I really did think it was just a fan copying her look. She walked off and on the back of her leather jacket it read Cheap Trick. Anyhow, I go to the gig and on comes that very same woman, hot as hell, tiny with Cheap Trick on the back of her jacket. That has to be the loudest gig I've ever been too and my ears were ringing for three days after. What an absolute legend and still gorgeous in that badass way
Well, in socialist federal republic of Yugoslavia I was just a teenager of 16.. in 1983. On every break in high school our dj put joan jett on the speakers... very loud. I've enjoyed every minute. It was for me, sounds from heaven. We've been a part of western world, those days. Surely. Who did something wrong? Thank you, Joan Jett
She's 3 years older than me and I saw her in the early 80;s and my god, she wasn't just out of my league she was out of any person I had ever knowns league! and ...never mind 😍
The next time someone blurts out that she didn't write ILRnR, I'd just like to ask them: do you come for The Carpenters for not writing most of their songs? How'bout Blondie, Elvis, Sinatra, etc?! No, they get tons of respect, but Joan does a few covers that outshine the originals, and suddenly, jerks wanna call her a "glorified cover band" and crap like that, ignoring the fact that she has written as much or more than she has covered. She is a good songwriters in her own right, and the fact that she has a talent for also picking covers to do is a plus not a minus! Stop holding Joan to unfair standards that you don't hold others to, and then crapping on her accomplishments! I don't like overselling her place in the industry and being hyperbolic about her, but nor do I believe that it's right to belittle her either! Be fair to Joan, you peasants! You folks criticizing her know nothing about her.
Well said. Some of her albums were a bit heavier on covers, others much less so. She has plenty of original material that is very good, much of which seems largely forgotten or overlooked by the wider public. In fact, I believe she said that the Runaways' song "You Drive Me Wild" was the first song she wrote - she must have been age 15 or so. And that is a solid, classic rocker, it's one of my favorite Runaways songs. And at just 15 (or 16?) she wrote that! Hardly a slouch, in the songwriting department.
I didn't realize how deep her speaking voice is, HAWT!!! If there's ever another movie made of Joan---- Gina Gershon would he PERFECT!! I'd love to see something exploring her 30's and 40's. Also, I can't get over how different her personality is from her stage persona. She's so feminine! Soft make-up, insane cheeks. I love that she's been rocking nearly 50 years and only has a few tattoos. They must mean something to her. She's the antithesis of her aggressive, loud, very provocative image.
Pat Benatar was my very first concert. It was 82 I believe. It was at El Paso Coliseum. Before it was time for the music, there were a few beach balls being hit around. Pat was up front as one on the concert goers; joining in and throwing the ball around. She rocked! The ticket price was 6 bucks!!!

A lesson in egotism:
SQ stated that JJ was "disappointed to find out that I was straight!" ( then chuckled).
Last, and this one is a blatant display of jealousy on SQs part...Suzi Q., Self professed Queen of Rock, has called JJ, (when JJ was H-O-T in the 80s & 90s), "Clone Jett"
Those in combination with the other snarky things SQ has muttered about JJ, hell, I don't blame JJ for barely acknowledging SQ in the Bad Reputation documentary.
Joan Jett a true pioneer and a solid gold rock and roll legend!
What an icon. She beat the odds and transcended the norms to shape not only a unicorn all-female band, but arguably a style of rock-and-roll that influenced generations. Music moved wide and broad thanks to the talent and vision of this incredible woman. I Love Rock and Roll.
Dude I'm 19 and when I started listening to her songs I felt happy, kind of started to fall in love with her music
I just saw her and Elle King open for Heart in Indianapolis Wednesday. She still sounds amazing. It was a great night of women rocking it out.
I JUST saw her open for heart too in utah. Still kick ass!
I saw her and Elle King too open for Heart. She was Fantastic! Made me feel like a teen again.
Heart sucks!!!!
@@lynndempsey4096 that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
When she speaks, she reminds me a little of a female Sylvester Stallone.
@Rock Stone - She sounds a little slurred or mumble-mouthed too, to me.
She was also born in Philly
@Rock Stone - I get all that. And I respect the hell out of her drive back then, and her success now. I still hear a slight similarity in their speech. That's not meant as an offense, but just an observation.
@Rock Stone - While I can't empathize with that "party till you drop" mania, I admire her will to fight her way back from every obstacle, even the self-imposed ones.
@Rock Stone she's British and-irish
Tremendous!
🤣 awesome
LOVE this!!❤❤
She was something once upon a time. But, that wore off a long time ago .
Was going to say you're making this up, but it does sound like something she would do LOL!😂
Joan is down to earth and real,no pretentions. She sings from the heart and just love what she does ❤
Love Joan Jett. Such class and perseverance. Kudos and thanks to so many years of great rock and roll music! You are our beloved rock queen!
Agreed!
She was a big smoker. I'm the same age as her and I see (VHS) videos of me in my 30s and my voice is COMPLETELY different. I smoked.
Joan isn't old ever she's like fine wine getting better and better with age only tastier she does no wrong ever i stand up for her always she is rock and roll
my teenage crush , im so glad she was here to make life a better place !!
Joan Jett is one of a kind. There's nobody else like her in the whole entire world. Truly an awesome lady
No..... XD
The Queen Is DORO PEACH.....LOL
WARLOK are god....
I think Joan Jett and Souixie Sioux should jam before the world ends.
agreed! : ^ ))
Yes, please, it would be a perfect ending credits wtf
They did hang out together in the 70s with the pistols
Fantastic clip Joan Jett is just beyond cool and so rock and roll it hurts! Total respect for her.
Joan Jett was my first concert in 1983 at a place in Houston Texas called AstroWorld she rocked that whole place!!!
That’s cool. I remember astroworld. They tore it down when I was a kid.
I've never seen Joan Jett in an interview, Wow!!! I am so impressed with how comfortable she seemed, and original and honest her answers were. Saw her a few years back, outdoor theater, ....she rocked it.! Have always been a big fan, always will be wishing you the very best Joan Jett. Please come back to Raleigh North Carolina soon!
I saw the very first Runaways show. So glad to see Joad doing well. I have a daughter who is an amazing guitar player and dong what Ms. Jett started.
Hi there🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Thanks for your love and support that has brought me this far, it has been a hard time for me going through this but your love and support keeps me going and standing strong in this difficult times. I do read your heartwarming comments and I truly appreciate all you’ve done for me throughout the years.
It’s a season of love😍❤️❤️ for me and so I decided to put a smile on the faces of my fans by going through my UA-cam channel and checking out on my fans, so I can get to communicate with my fans better through discussion of depth and humor listening to o and criticism of my career.💞💞🙏💖💕💕
player and dong?
You are a Strength for women of the world that is hard to match!!! Rock on 😁✌🙏☮🎸
she's such a raw and from what i can tell genuinely good human being
I've been to a couple of JJ concerts and she is always personable, friendly, and interactive with the audience.
Thanks Ron, I love your work! : ^ )))
Saw Joan Jett and Heart in concert this Saturday and they were great! Both bands still have an amazing presence. Great show!
Awesome!
Joan Jett, cool af, always
100%!
I saw her in concert in Anchorage Alaska back in the early 80s, Was awesome. I always love her music.
She’s so enlightened...she exudes infinite beauty
She is and very humble and genuine as well
I was in a small band in New Jersey in the 80's.
💯Those times were amazing indeed!
This interview is fantastic. I feel like I just got a chance to hang out with Joan Jett
Joan your still a beautiful person 😘🇺🇸😇 God bless you sweetie.... Danced to your music many o nights 🤗now I'm too old hahaha. I guess I'm not we're about the same age never too old to party and have a good time! 😘💟😄
We're never too old at heart. (But tell that to my knees & hips.)
How can one not totally dig Joan Jett? Much respect!
YOU DEAR, CHICK STILL MAKE MY THROBBING (HEART) BEAT OUT OF CONTROL. Thank You Joan you made the 70s and 80s and NOW the greatest time to be alive. Much Love and Respect. Peace.
Total respect for Joan Jett. I've loved her since we were both about 20.
Joan was awesome!
Music back in the late 70s early 80s was by far the most creative there ever was!
And Joan did here part to contribute her creative way.
Thank you for that.
Just went to take my son on his 1st concert he absolutely loved it knew every word he lovez the real rock n roll
Joan Jett... so modest. Grew up listening to her in the Runaways and then on her own. STILL and always will be - a class act !!!
100%!
What an absolute legend and still gorgeous in that badass way
Proud to say I've been a true fan since 1977 The Runaways paved the way for ALL women and Joan took it to the next level and beyond
I aspire to be like Joan when I’m her age. She’s absolutely amazing and inspiring. I adore her, always have always will.
Mid 80s I used to put a buck in the jukebox and play I love rock & roll 10 times in a row
That time in our lives seems so long ago now, but never to be forgotten 💯✅️
She has the best “ow!” of any singer in rock music.
Love this woman.
Love her music.
Do want you want.
Be who you are.
Thank you Joan for being you.
👍😎🤘
Always liked Joan Jett and was a huge Runaways fan!
Love love love Joan Jett ❤. Keep kicking ass. ❤ thanks for your music 🎶.
How cool this is hearing from a Rock legend growing up raised on rock, I got into most of her tunes.
It's Nov. 2021, and this has 9.5K likes and zero dislikes. That's amazing. She is a woman's rock and roll icon.
Met Joan - 76 few times n.j bar with Runaways band - great shows -hanged out back stage few beers & with band .good times "Joan is great "
Tremendous!👍
@@JamesDeWeaver lov - joan
Oh my. Apart from her awesome singing voice, I’m quite captivated by her speaking voice too! Such an unusual tone 😭
Lucky enough to have seen her in concert in 1997 & 2018 ❤
Tremendous!
She’s incredible.
I've never heard Joan be this open and at ease during an interview. Best one I've ever seen!!!!
I saw Joan Jett open for Alice Cooper at UNC Chapel Hill NC in ‘77.. She was badass in her red Converses..
I love Joan jett and her music since I first heard it in the 80s my dog named jett after her rock on Joan jett!!
👍Tremendous 🐕
She's been rocking night after night for what 50 years..total badass
I love how she seems to speak plainly and truthfully yet with respect.
When I first stumbled across Joan, she was opening for the Kinks in LA. Hell of a great night!
She's 3 years older than me and I saw her in the early 80;s and my god, she wasn't just out of my league she was out of any person I had ever knowns league! and ...never mind 😍
Not only is her singing & songs memorable but her on going Charity events make her Legendary!👍
JOAN JETT STILL ROCKS!!... seen her in concert a few years ago, awesome!
I did the same thing when Joan Jett was here opening for ZZ Top. Three nights and I got tickets for all 3 nights and loved every minite watching her.
SO AWESOME!! 💯🙌
@@JamesDeWeaver it really was awesome, by the 3rd night I just about knew her set list...
Thanks for the pinned post!
I love Joan JETT
She is a living legend. She has taken other people's songs and made her version the definitive one.
At the same time as the Runaways there was Pat Benatar And Heart. Before them Grace Slick and Janice Joplin.
Thanks, Lobo! I was going to bring some of those names up. I kinda wish Joan had though.
And Stevie Nicks...
before that there was big mama thornton and billi holliday
Ace of cups
She was very popular in my youth, always loved Joan Jett. ❤️
May the Great Spirit watch over you. 🙏
