  • The multi-decade Rock 'n' Roll Goddess, Rock& Roll Hall of Fame recipient Joan Jett is currently In Australia with her new album with The Black Hearts "Bad Reputation".
    Todd Oldham's Biography of Joan Jett is also a fantastic read for anyone who likes the music of the time period from "The Runaways" and wants to find out more about Joan's trial's and tribulation's in the "Rock Game"
    While I'm on the subject of the "The Runaways", their Manager, Kim Fowley was once very good friends with Gail Sloatman Zappa, they even cut a record together, "Americas Sweethearts", which Fowley produced. Fowley would later go on to produce Frank Zappa and some of The Mothers of Invention on his seven inch single "Where it's at".
    Fowley was a self proclaimed "male street hustler" in his youth and would cruise the street's of "The City of Angel's" looking for tricks.
    In 1975 Fowley would have perhaps his greatest success when he created the "The Runaways".
    As people who are reading this would probably know, The Runaways featured a then sixteen year old Joan Jett and Lita Ford, whom Fowley "tastefully" attired in leather and lingerie, he would later boast "Everyone loved the idea of sixteen year old girls playing guitars and singing about fu*king"! Some of the young girls in the band, including Cherie Curry, would later accuse Fowley of requiring them to perform "sexual services" for him AND his associates as a prerequisite for membership in the band!
    So when Joan says she knows ALL about that scene, I BELIEVE her!

    This is a fantastic video full of thoughts and idea's we so rarely get to hear, and with Joan's stories I personally could listen all day long!

    There's a post farther down in reference to Joan being "old" and has "stepped aside" ..
    What???
    Look, 60, 61 is not old.
    She's not old and she hasn't stepped aside.
    Pick up an instrument, learn how to play and love it. It will be with you, if you're lucky, just like it is with Joan, for life.
    I'm a month older than she is.
    I picked up a guitar at 8 and I can't see my life without one.
    I bought the first Runaways album not because the singer was hot (we said Fox back then) but because it was ass kicking music.
    Throwing stones at her because she's gotten older is, well f*cking Stupid.
    She's still got it and she hasn't stopped or stepped down.
    I don't think she'd know how. It's in her DNA.

      Actually, Suzi Quatro delivered JJ an unfair backhanded insult in an interview (it's been a while since I watched it).
      She all but stated JJ had copied her scream.
      I think that's why JJ didn't reference SQ in Bad Reputation docu, very much, stating she hadn't really heard of Suzi back in the 70s
      I don't blame her for not giving Suzi much in the way of props.
      I recall, decades ago, reading something (probably Creem magazine) about Joan talking about influences before the Runaway's.
      One in fact, was Suzi.
      If I recall correctly, the article stated that JJ had a photo of Suzi in either the heel or inside one of her stacks (AKA platforms, tall soled shoes popular in the 70s).
      Suzi had been an influence but, that flippant slap at JJs scream most likely pissed her off .. and who could blame her?!
      I'll see if I can find that Suzi interview

    • @nickdamit
      @nickdamit 4 роки тому +11

      Ok. I found some stuff, JJ has to have heard
      Qualifier: I was a fan of SQ, crushing on her before I bought my first Runaways album and before JJ caught my eye.
      Onward... There's an interview where SQ takes credit for JJs success.
      Perhaps on some level she was an *influence* but, JJ earned her success with blood, sweat, tears and damn near her life. JJ paid dues SQ never has. That's a fact. Length of time in the music biz or scene does not equate a heirarchy. When it comes down to brass tacks, JJ has had more success, sales and recognition. Period.
      Another slice of "here's another slap for you" by Suzi Q:
      SQ stated that "I think Joan Jett deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but I'm pissed off about it" because SQ feels she's more worthy than JJ is. That heirarchy thing again.
      Sorry but, SQ just doesn't have the same level of success, even factoring in her popularity in the UK
      Nope!
      A lesson in egotism:
      SQ stated that JJ was "disappointed to find out that I was straight!" ( then chuckled).
      Well, Ms. Q revealed on her old MySpace profile, under status, that she's "bisexual".
      How do I know? In 2008, I wrote to SQ asking her if she would wish my bass player, who had crushed on SQ for years, a happy birthday. Suzi was very generous in doing so without any problem. My friend then visited SQs MySpace profile, noticing said status.
      So, what's this straight business? Did she forget she came out as Bi?
      JJ may have had a school girl crush (and I emphasize Girl) but nothing more.
      SQ stated that in the 70s, JJ would wait after shows, in hopes of hooking up with her.
      Really, Suzi? Really...?
      JJ was under age, a minor. WTF difference would it have made if it were true?
      Jump back, Jack, get off your high horse, Suzi! For crying out loud, woman!
      Last, and this one is a blatant display of jealousy on SQs part...Suzi Q., Self professed Queen of Rock, has called JJ, (when JJ was H-O-T in the 80s & 90s), "Clone Jett"
      Those in combination with the other snarky things SQ has muttered about JJ, hell, I don't blame JJ for barely acknowledging SQ in the Bad Reputation documentary.
      At least JJ didn't reciprocate because she's just not full of herself. She doesn't need to boast or brag because JJ knows who she is when she gets in stage to perform.

    • @storybellz
      @storybellz 4 роки тому +4

      @@nickdamit - I love Joan dearly, and can see how Suzi's comments would be hurtful to her on some level (even though I totally get where Suzi is coming from too). But, it's not entirely accurate to say that Joan never reciprocated. She has, in fact. In one interview, Joan said that she (Joan) wrote her own music, whereas when Suzi was having her success, she was "contrived". This was said when Joan was obviously miffed from an interviewer egging her on, by asking her about comments Suzi made. However, it falls flat, because Joan had her biggest success with songs she didn't write either- same as Suzi. Yet, they both are capable songwriters too. So, in that respect, they should not be critical of each-other- but Joan was at the time. Joan also suggested that Suzi must be "bitter"... I say all this to say that we need to be careful of putting one down while praising another. Neither is perfect. It's best to try to understand both of them, rather than putting one on a pedestal, because then, you are not really knowing who they really are. Hence, Joan, like Suzi, is far from perfect. She has said her fair share of things that she wouldn't want repeated now- I can assure you. Granted, she does try to always be mindful of how she comes across. But, this is miss "I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation" we're talking about here- so she has had her slip-ups... I will say though, the irony is that she seems to care about her reputation and how she comes across far more than Suzi does about hers- which may account for Suzi's more frequent faux-pas as far as comments...
      As for the MySpace page, I don't think it was really her. Are you sure it wasn't someone pretending to be her? Because it was said of her by her one-time manager that she was straight as far back as 2004- so unless she had an epiphany or something after that, I don't think she was lying. OR, he was referring to how she identified back in the 1970s, and then after that, she started to realize she was bi. That happens. Doesn't change the fact that when Joan was crushing on her (and she was- majorly! Just go listen to "Gotta Get Out Tonight" if you wanna know how much!), that Suzi wasn't open to it then. And as far as Joan being underage back then, it didn't matter to Joan. A] this was the sexy 70s. People were far less concerned with that back then, and B] I doubt it was much of a factor to Suzi either, because she too, crushed on older people, and even got pregnant by a married man when she was around the same age Joan was back when Joan wanted her. It wasn't an issue for either of them. One-sided desire was the issue.

    Its hard for me to believe any group of kids had it better then teens in the late 70s, early 80s in Southern California. Roller rinks, no junkies living at the beach, banana seats, short shorts. We would go to places amd it seemed like there were thousands of kids just doing whatever we wanted. I got beat up 3 times in one summer, so it's not like it was super safe, but it was amazing.

    • @storybellz
      @storybellz Рік тому

      @@PlasticGirl65 You do know being the King or Queen of a genre is not about who came first, right?! If that were the case, Elvis wouldn't be known as the King, cause he wasn't the first. Joan is the Queen of rock n' roll for the same reason Elvis is King- because she represents it for women better than anyone else, i the most iconic, and has had the biggest impact. Suzi being first doesn't make her the Queen, it just makes her an early influencer- even the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, which I fully expect you'll disparage because they don't follow your rules, have a separate category for early influencers, and at this point, that's what Suzi is to female rockers- but Joan is the Queen. Period.

    • @PlasticGirl65
      @PlasticGirl65 Рік тому

      @@storybellz Ridiculous, most of her songs are covers of other people's! She was asked in an interview about writing I love rock and roll and she didn't even have the decency to say it wasn't her it was Alan Merrill.

    • @storybellz
      @storybellz Рік тому

      @@PlasticGirl65 - First of all, heck no, most of her songs are not covers - only most of the ones you know are, which proves that you don't know enough about her to have a valid opinion on the matter. In fact, Joan has written and co-written over 120 songs, not to mention her work with other musicians and as a producer for others! Secondly, maybe she gets tired of constantly having to correct people on who wrote the song- maybe in the excitement of the moment, she, like many, would hate to burst people's bubble, so it always catches her off-guard and she trips up. But the fact is that she was honest about where that song came from, from the very beginning, and credit to Alan is in the album's liner notes. You obviously haven't seen or read many of her interviews, again making you ill-informed to even have a valid or accurate opinion on the matter.
      I don't see people holding The Carpenters or others who have done plenty of covers to this sort of rigid, unfair standard or assuming they wrote all their songs and then getting all judgmental and sanctimonious about it.
      Those criticizing Joan just can't handle the fact that she's the queen of rock n' roll instead of their fave. It all boils down to that. Fun fact: Joan spent an afternoon at Graceland to pay her respects and put a guitar pic on Elvis's grave, back in the days of the release of I LOVE RnR, and Elvis's own aunt invited her in the house with her. They talked, and Elvis's aunt even remarked on the similarity between Joan and Elvis! That's quite the endorsement that NO OTHER female rocker has! Oh yeah, and Joan also has her own display at Graceland which honors her! So obviously, Elvis's own family disagree with you and are smart enough to know that Joan IS the queen of rock n' roll!
      Elvis still has people arguing over whether he's the king of the genre or not- despite the fact that it's widely accepted that he is. Ditto is the case for Joan. Like it or not, she and no other, is the Queen of Rock n' Roll!
