You’ve got to hand it to Lacey, he took a really good beating, from the best ever super middleweight. He showed grit, determination and sheer toughness to the end. A true master class and one of the best super middleweight fights, with two outstanding boxers. Lacey just couldn’t cope with Joe’s amazing speed, accuracy, timing, toughness and relentless stamina. Along with superb combinations and boxing techniques. He showed the difference between a 1st class boxer vs a top class brawler.
I've been looking for the shotime broadcast cuz the UK one is the only one on youtube. I wanted to hear the American commentators as Calzaghe slowly made them eat their words.
@samleonard156 because there is history upon history of US Boxers dominating British boxers (with a few notable exceptions.) Nowadays the script has flipped at least for the Heavyweight division.
Joe hardly slept the night before yet he said he could have gone another five rounds! He actually broke his left hand again in the 8th but carried on punching with it. (Love it how he says to his dad in the corner at the end of round 2, "He can't punch shit!")
when everyone tells you that you are an invincible US boxing god - and then you come up against an invincible boxing god. The fear and bewilderment was evident in Lacy's eyes between rounds.
THIS was Joe’s “coming out” fight; it was like the Trinidad vs Hopkins fight…Lacey was seen as the underdog & Lacey was the man in the super middleweight division, and some analysts envisioned a possible Lacey vs Jones Jr sometime down the line. Calzaghe shut it all down!
It's a shame that most Americans didn't rate Joe. Because he didn't get involved in all the theatre and razzmatazz that the USA seemed to insist on to generate maximum interest, they assumed he was a typical orthodox traditional European fighter. Which American has never held in high esteem. It also shows their double standards when Hopkins went on to win another world title, after joe 'screwed him in that diabolical theatrical performance. Apparently, he was all 'washed up' for that fight, yet suddenly he was GOAT when he won a later title. Regardless of the lack of respect for Joe in the states, most appreciates of the sport with a modicum of intelligence know that he was special.
how does an unbeaten champion duck everybody . .he tried to get big fights , couldnt at Super middle ..he only went upto light heavy for last 2 paydays , the problem is since boxing became sactioned in and pooular in early 1900s , USA for some reason have always thought that EVERY boxer should go to US ..wtf madness.. and before that they introduced no contest rule where if boxed in USA you had to KO the American champ to become champion .. when Jim Driscoll of Wales easily beat Abe Attell in about 1909 , where EVERY American nwwspaper gave him landslide victory , and the nickname Peerless Jim . .BUT never won a title crazy .
Nobody could beat Joe Calzaghe. he was a beast. No matter how close any of his opponents came, they just couldn't nail him. Not even by a decision.
RJ Jnr beat him for one Rd.

Done exactly the same thing 😅 why do American commentators hate British fighters lol

Lmao you clowns must have been disappointed considering the commentary was completely unbiased

Jeff Lacy was an absolutely tough, gritty sonofabitch. No excuses from him. A very likeable honest boxer. Our Joe was just a Welsh Warrior

An iconic moment in boxing history " He can't punch sh*t." It was all over at that moment.
The ultimate in pugalistic excellence. Enough said.

Respect to Jeff Lacy. Intelligent sportsman.

I wish the Calzaghe and Ward eras would have crossed.. a 50 / 50 I could not have picked a winner fight
