    I think the fact that Calzaghe was a Brit actually hurt him. Brit fighters have to prove themselves to gain equal status with our fighters, but Calzaghe was always under rated because of that IMO. In fact, I would rate Calzaghe ahead of Mayweather on the all-time p4p list without a 2nd thought. Floyd's career is a bit of smoke and mirrors. The guys he fought were mostly 'b' level guys, smaller guys, older guys and guys coming off of a series of rough fights. Calzaghe never ducked anyone that I know of, he had rough fights his entire career and survived all of them, most of them with style and flare. Some of Joe's performances were simply fantastic, even an ugly fight like this he won 8-3-1 or 9-2-1 by the judges score cards, not an easy task beating a tough guy like Bika that's a dirty fighter as well.
    Overall,.....Joe fought clean, he had great hand speed and I saw him bust up many guys with his so called 'slapping' punches. Look at Jeff Lacy at the end of their fight, he was beaten very badly and Lacy was considered the big puncher coming in to the fight. Joe beat a classic fighter and a very tough guy in Kessler, he beat brawlers like Bika, Eubank and Lacy, and he beat everyone in between. He doesn't deserve full credit for beating Hopkins and Jones because of their ages but they were both still tough and Joe was also at the end of his career when he fought them. Calzaghe never won a single controversial decision that I know of, Floyd won at least 4 of them that he could have lost, and he should have lost at least 2 or 3 of them in my opinion. Then Floyd fought an MMA fighter for his last win, stinking up the sport and his legacy in my opinion.
    There's absolutely nothing to point at in Calzaghe's career whereby you can put an asterik along side his win, all straight forward, uncontroversial wins against anyone willing to fight for 46 consecutive wins. A great career, top 25 all-time I would say. I don't rate Floyd that high because there was too much dirt, too many fighters ducked and questionable wins. Floyd paid Marcos Maidana 1.5 million$ extra to get him to agree to wear gloves that Floyd chose for him. Let me repeat that; Maidana had worn one style, Reyes gloves, his entire career. They are known as 'punchers' gloves and everyone is familiar with them. Floyd knew what Maidana did to Adrien Broner, pounding lumps on his head in their fight, so Floyd actually feared Maidana wearing those punchers gloves. He feared that to the degree that he negotiated a 1.5 million$ bonus out of Floyd's earnings in the fight, then he chose a pair of 'pillows' for Maidana to wear. That was in their first fight, a fight that many thought that Maidana won despite the soft gloves.
    How can you expect to be a career p4p all-time best fighter with shit like that on your resume? Floyd of course kept this a secret, but Maidana's trainer was pissed off before their 2nd fight because Floyd was lying to the media, so he( Robert Garcia) told this story in an interview. At the press conference before the 2nd fight, Garcia announced the introduction of Maidana's gloves for that fight. Someone came on stage wearing gloves about 25 times the normal size as an insult to Floyd because Floyd made Maidana wear bigger, softer gloves in the 1st fight. Floyd was embarrassed but he said nothing,.... what could he say?

      Listen, I get it... but you have to give Floyd his flowers. You might not like his style but he is a very technically sound boxer and defensive wizard.
      I'm surprised in that whole rant (which contained some fair points) you never mentioned the fact that only Las Vegas-style "home cooking" saved him from what really should have been a loss to Jose Luis Castillo early in Floyd's career. The film does not lie... he lost that fight!!

    in my humble and personal scoreboard, Calzaghe still ahead in the number of shots carried, great work by Jab, always the initiative in hand, shame about that headbutts that surely has slightly influenced the match, but Bika went very close to Calzaghe and had more power in the shots, but little initiative, little jab, he based everything on the strength of his shots, with another boxer maybe it would have worked, but Calzaghe was smart enough and smart to dodge the most important shots, good Bika (he just has to be careful with the head and as written have more initiative) bravo Calzaghe, generous match, perhaps a bit undertone to the usual performances, but I think it was also thanks to Bika! Joe you were a great boxer, and your father was great at instilling confidence in you and constantly representing a value-added presence, Calzaghe underrated? perhaps, but not from the boxing world, let alone from his opponents, unfortunately the internet is another thing!

    • @mizofan

      Calzaghe is very underrated by many ignorant people online who don't appreciate his will, workrate, handspeed and skill, and don't realise the extent he was troubled by hand problems yet was still unbeaten. Ottke and Collins retired when expected to fight him, Hopkins avoided him rather than accept a fight being lined up, until years later the big payday v the level of risk to his reputation made it worth his while. Many boxing fans have not even heard of his great Welsh compatriot Jimmy Wilde, world flyweight champion, who went approx 100 fights (slight difference between sites' records), before losing. despite usually fighting bigger men. Gene Tunney said Wilde was the best boxer he saw.

    I think Joe is probably the best Ive ever seen at not letting a guy hold him . Any time any opponent tried to tie him up to take a little break, Joe was pulling loose, and punching. Constantly.
    11:18 Joe was always landing that strange, lean in / fall forward left hand. He used that well over his career. Tricky little sneaky scoring blow. Hed sneak you with it as hed be falling either past his opponent, or onto them.
    13:45 Brilliant piece of boxing that leads to a nice left cross. 15:34 great Calzaghe stuff.
    17:48 unusually high guard to set up a stiff body jab, then a slick check hook.

  • @MrMarco855
    @MrMarco855 8 років тому +4

    Very rough brawl. Bika is known for head butts and other fouls, but Calzaghe got into the act in return. I'll bet nobody saw it, but joe tried his best to break Bika's nose with a 'thrusted' head butt like I've not seen before. I'm not saying Bika didn't deserve it, it looked as if he certainly did, and I think Calzaghe lost his temper a bit. It was getting so nasty that Calzaghe knew if he didn't push back that he would be badly cut or worse sooner or later.
    If you want to see a real , hard core, with bad intentions head butt,..........take a look at Calzaghe's offering at about 26:15. It happened quickly so you have to watch carefully. Calzaghe got off a good one, and he was so fast about it the referee didn't notice. Joe tucked his head into bika's chest, and bent slightly. His head was about 6" or so directly beneath Bika's chin. Joe thrust himself upward, pushing with both legs. I'm not sure if it 'landed', ........it may have only grazed Bika. If it would have hit squarely,........ Bika would have shit himself. I'm going to watch it again myself,........

    I've never counted before, but I wonder how many times a commentator gets things wrong in a given fight. Last round ended with the commentator getting everything wrong, now I see him screw up again at the end of the 3rd round. At 19:47 Calzaghe begins throwing a total of 6 punches. The first 5 missed, the last punch was a wild right that landed high on the side of Bika's head. The commentator said that Calzaghe landed a solid left flush on Bika, but he did no such thing. It was Bika that landed a few punches during the exchange.

    Commentators can mess up a fight. Sometimes it's favoritism, other times incompetence. For example, at 15:48 there's 8 seconds left in round#2. The fight is sloppy, they go at each other until the end. The commentator accused Bika of throwing 3 punches after the bell, he continued making an issue of it into the next round. If you listen closely the bell rings at 15:50, Joe threw a 3 punch flurry just after it rang.
    The truth is that Calzaghe threw 3 punches after the bell, Bika threw 2 punches in retaliation. The commentator claimed that Bika missed all 3. He only threw 2 punches, one was a good right to the face of Joe. The commentator got everything wrong. It was Calzaghe that threw punches after the bell, Bika only retaliated. He said Bika threw 3 punches, he only threw 2. He claimed that all '3' missed, but one landed.
    That's why the commentary and their scoring shouldn't be respected. They favor one guy over another, lie about punches landed and make an effort to minimize the opposing fighter. Scoring is difficult enough without trying to score while they're non-stop blabbing. At fight's end they have many believing that their favorite won the fight when very often, he hasn't.

    • @danyoutube7491
      @danyoutube7491 Рік тому

      He wasn't getting out muscled and when toe to toe BOXING Bika had little to offer, though he did get better in the last four rounds or so, partly due, I think, to having tired and rattled Calzaghe mentally with his dirty games. Bika tired him out and injured him primarily through holding, butting, wrestling and nonsense like that. Joe was foolish to be getting close though, he could have kept it neater for pretty much the entire fight if he'd fought with more discipline and sense because Bika was notorious for his bad behaviour. Calzaghe should have been better balanced, landing his straighter, more precise shots and then getting out of range of Bika. Instead he began the fight as if he was rehashing the last few rounds against a tired and dejected Lacy; Joe's attitude in this fight was poor in my opinion and it made it a far uglier and more arduous affair for himself than it needed to be. When Bika started having success with lead right hands, it should have been obvious to Calzaghe that lateral movement, specifically to his right, would take him away from that right hand and make Bika miss and give Joe a counter opportunity (Bika was almost always off balance after throwing). Calzaghe definitely won it by several rounds though.

    Kellerman summer up the Calzaghe situation well....Calzaghe was too good for an American fighter to go to the uk to challenge and Calzaghe was such a big draw in the uk...why bother sending him to America where he wasn’t as well know.
    Felt sorry for Joe, despite all his accolades, he could have fought and proved more convincingly how good he was. Toney, Jones (earlier), Darius M etc etc. I do think he was unique though and also a very underrated puncher. Very heavy handed.
