    Dracovish was quite interesting because it only got the 130 base power stab move if it moved first. So people thought to put a choice scarf on it so it would outspeed threats and hit them hard, but then walls like ferrothorn and toxapex could tank a few hits from it. So then people thought if you're going to outspeed these walls anyway you might as well put a choice band on to make sure you blow away these walls. So then it became a mindgame, do you stay in to half the move's power and get owned by choice scarf, or do you switch to your wall and get owned if it's choice band. And then came dracovish rain.

    • @soveliss42
      @soveliss42 Місяць тому +35

      correct, but I feel obligated to point out that the boosted fishious rend is 170 base power before stab/etc

    •  Місяць тому +23

      170* instead of 130. That's a huge difference. Btw it is notable that he also has access to sand rush, so in sand he basically outspeeds everything in ou besides excadrill. Even without strong jaw he still ohko anything that didn't resist, even bulky pokemon.

  • @alathreon8315
    @alathreon8315 Місяць тому +48

    A thing about Darmatitan galar, is that it was played with Icle crash, earthquake, flare blitz, u-turn. And this combo of move is supereffective against most defensive pokémons in the game. It's super effective against most dragons, against, toxapex, against ferrothorn. It wasn't even a question of trying to find a resist, just finding a pokemon which wasn't weak was already complicated. And on top of that, it could just ignore the 50/50 and u-turn, or it could just dynamax and switch moves. Ah and since darmanitan was so stupidly strong, it means its other form had a niche : because any player seeing darmanitan switching in would try to win the 50/50 by switching, you could place a sub, belly drum, and sweep.

    Iron Bundle makes sense being that fast. It needs to deliver presents to all the children in the world in a single night. In a design perspective though, I don't mind the Paradox Pokemon or the Ultra Beasts being considered "legendary-lite". If one of them hits Uber, it's not so bad. They're meant to be abnormal.
    Still, some of the design choices they make only seem to make sense if they only care about game balance from a VGC perspective. Last Respects has no business being in a 6v6 Single Battle format. And it causes perfectly ordinary looking Pokemon to be banned. It's much more manageable in a VGC format.

    • @iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013
      @iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 3 дні тому

      That's because they *do* only care about game balance for their weird Official/Personal format, and even then, only sometimes. Most of the time, they seem to just Make Things without anyone giving much thought to what impact it'll have on any format.
      Also, Iron Bundle's speed is not the problem or the thing requiring justification - past a certain point, higher and higher speed doesn't actually do anything anyway, and there are a ton of fast, strong, *fragile* pokemon. Fast, Strong, and Bulky? You might as well just give it an ability to KOs an enemy on switch-in.

  • @SpicyMapping
    @SpicyMapping Місяць тому +29

    13:41 the funniest part was that in the time just before the ban dracovish fell off in usage because people realized that if a team had seismitoad, which pretty much every team did at that point to not auto lose to fish, dracovish just wasn’t very good. you were basically required to run an otherwise bad pokemon to not automatically lose to a mon that wasn’t even on most teams anymore

    • @ttarion
      @ttarion Місяць тому +11

      Seismitoad was not a consistent answer to Dracovish. Seismitoad alone was useless as it got 2hko'd by banded Outrage, so it was forced to be used alongside a fairy (usually Clefable). But even this wasn't consistent since it was a coin flip between Outrage and Rend. You can't even make use of the fact Outrage locks Dracovish in unless you let it kill something, that "something" often being the supposed hard counter you brought in the place.

    • @ILikeCrunchyWater
      @ILikeCrunchyWater 4 дні тому +1

      @@ttarion a fun thing I pulled off a couple times in different tiers was trapping a choiced mon locked into outrage with a fairy type. Let it get a KO, then mean look with gardevoir or infestation with ribombee on the locked-in outrage turn, then calm mind/quiver dance up to max. Obviously very gimmicky and a waste of a mon/slot in other situations, but it might've been reasonable back then lol.

    • @LeticiaGrey19
      @LeticiaGrey19 14 годин тому

      @@SpicyMapping People realized at the time that Seismitoad was also garbage even in a metagame with less mons (on top of being not that great into Dracovishs Dragon STAB) and solely prominent because Dracovish otherwise destroys everything but a specific combo of items and moves on Toxapex + Ferrothorn together and Dracovish was actually still placed in A Ranks because of this before the way too late ban. A similar dynamic would happen if people ever were crazy enough to unban Kyogre (hi Ludicolo, Gastrodon, more omnipresent Ferrothorn).

      Cloyster was considered a meme and a low ladder terror back in the day because we were all tunnel visioned on flinch fishing with King's Rock, and generally as a playerbase we were all a lot worse at the game than we are now. And since it was considered to be a low ladder meme the good players of the time didn't explore it the way they probably should have before the gens changed so it took a very very long time for people to actually realize that even uninvested a +2 special attack can blow through mons that were previously believed to beat Cloyster.

    Dracovish is one of those Pokemon with the honor of being just as broken in the official VGC format as it was in singles, arguably it was even better there in some circumstances since usually at least one of your opponent's Pokemon is going to be slower than it.
    G-Darmanitan was also strong in VGC but the doubles format made it easier to take down in many cases.

    • @Ribombastic
      @Ribombastic Місяць тому +1

      "Just as broken" is quite a stretch. Between dynamax working against it by making targets bulkier and their attacks harder to take, sun and Intimidate weakening it, Protect potentially making it waste a turn, speed control being able to mess it up, and at times Gastrodon blanking Fishious Rend, Dracovish was strong in VGC but it wasn't completely breaking the game as far as I remember. Maybe it was dominant early into the gen, sure, but compared to OU, it was definitely more manageable without having to bend over backwards to counter it specifically. I think it's much like G-Darm as you mentioned in that Doubles is better prepared to handle a mon like it, though Vish was able to perform better than Darm.

For example, how about Shaymin Sky in gen 5, the first unanimous ban ever because it was literally that unbearable. Or, even better, do a video on the opposite; pokemon most deserving of a ban that didn't get it. Personally, Dragonite in gen 7 1v1 will always hold that title for me. It was clearly overpowered with WAY too many sets that beat it's already shaky checks, but the number 2 pokemon in the tier, Mega Gyarados, was the best answer to it by far and also amazing in it's own right. There was this tug and pull between the three best pokemon, mega gyarados, Dragonite, and mega charizard x where they could all beat each other depending on the set, but no set beat every other one.

    I wish you covered one of the funniest bans in Gen 9 which was Houndstone, a pure ghost type pokemon with relatively mediocre stats. The only reason it was banned at all is because it (as is somewhat common now) has one extremely overpowered move in last respects. A ghost type physical move similar to rage fist in that it starts at 50 power and stacks up 50 extra power every time its condition is met. Only except instead of needing to be hit to raise its power, an ally on the team simply needs to faint, up to a max stack of 300 base power.. This leads to no direct risk for Houndstone while still gaining a benefit, which of course leads to people running Houndstone last slot with a choice scarf for a needed speed boost and Tera ghost for an even stronger STAB bonus. With a base power of 600 after Tera Ghost, it honestly puts Dracovish’s measly 382.5 base power Fishous Rend to shame.
    Of course with the release of Basculegion, a much better user of Last Respects with Swift Swim for a speed boost without choice scarf or Adaptability for greater STAB damage without using your Tera, Houndstone mostly lost his purpose and only unique move in Ubers. Smogon finally decided to change the ban from Houndstone himself, to the move Last Respects. Which I find to be more than fair to both Houndstone and Basculegion, who are ultimately fairly mediocre without Last Respects.

    One thing easily forgotten about G-Darm is Dynamax. Since Dynamax disables choicelocks it also disables Gorilla Tactics which meant that G-Darm was even more of an Absolute Menace for the short time Dynamax was legal as it could opt to change its move at any time. Another big frustration I found with G-Darm is its bulk. 105/55/55 on an Ice type may not seem *too* good but it was actually enough to survive priority moves. I thought I'd found a cool counter in Conkeldurr's Mach Punch but even at 252+ Atk Iron Fist you only deal 99% on a max roll so you'd need to fully commit and run Life Orb or Choice Band (or wait for hazard chip) to kill G-Darm. 140 Atk STAB SE priority couldn't delete this thing.
    The thing I remember most about Iron Bundle is Finchinator asking people to name a single reliable switch-in to Specs Bundle that wasn't "Blissey or Hydro Pump's animation going to the left". The only answer I remember being pitched was full SpDef Tera Ice Water Absorb Vaporeon. Amazing.
