So I think you just saved me from buying a new riding mower. Unfortunately I've let mine sit in the elements (rain) a couple years. And it does this same exact thing. I guess I'll tackle it in the morning to see if this is the issue. I did notice when I checked the oil before trying to see if it would start with the new battery that the oil was clearish... but still had an oily residue to it.
Thanks for the video.I have a Troy belt bronco mine is totally different the carburetor is the same but the motor cover is giving me a hard time. I think the screws are hex screws I hope I haven't grinded one down too much. I have been working on this thing for over a week.
WE had installed a new tractor motor and had it two weeks when the fuel made it to the oil crankcase and combustion chamber. This has happened to us over the years to many times that we decided to install a fuel shutoff valve so we can turn the fuel off when the tractor is parked. Its a nice service valve when servicing the fuel filter and carb too.

I just split a new starter gear into about 10 pieces on one of these. Same symptoms but I misdiagnosed it. Now in addition to having to do your fix, I have to figure out how to get my old starter gear on the new starter lol!
I had a similar situation. Popped open the valve cover and the rocker arms were so loose one of the rockers fell off the push rod and was rotated 90 degrees from where it should have been. I pulled the spark plug and rotated the engine to top dead center and readjusted the valve lash. Closed it up and it started right up. It was still running a little rough with the choke open so I ordered the rebuild kit for the Nikki carb from Kohler for about $20. The only parts I changed were the float bowl gasket, float needle, and the o-rings on the main jet and fuel intake in the float bowl. Put it back together again and it runs good as new.
***New comment on an older video*** I have an old, 2nd hand John Deere l100 and went through the gambit of ignition switch, starter solenoid, and starter over a month or so of trying and ordering, waiting for it to come in, you know, just like everybody else has done at some time or other. I saw some other fellers do everything to include removing the fan wheel housing screen and use the bolt with a socket and impact driver to turn er’ over a few times, and it worked on the one he was messing with. I’m gonna pull mine open soon, and check that plug for gas, and switch over to the Briggs carburetor like you did. (And a fuel shut-off valve)

If it's truly hydro locked. Only 2 reasons, carb or fuel pump. That simple. Hydro lock is fuel on top of piston, it needs to be drained and blown out. Other common issues are mistaken for this is. Valve lash not at .004 in., cam compression release broken, weak starter, weak battery, loose ground and more. Take your time and diagnose it, check my other videos. It's all covered. Hi I have an 18.5hp Briggs that the engine will turn a little and stop at the compression stroke. I can help it past the compression stroke and it then has enough momentum to start. Does that sound like the compression release is not adjusted correctly? On a different video you found pieces of timing gear in the oil would an engine run at all with pices missing like that?
Another question I have is the mower I have is a Craftsman 42” deck with a 6 speed transmission that is extremely hard to shift speeds or go in to reverse. It kinda helps to rock the mower. Any advice that can make it shift smoother? Thanks I’m advance
I know the carb was bad and it fixed the problem when you changed it. But what made the first carb bad to begin with? Is the first carb repairable? What failed on the first one if you had to guess? Thanks, great video.
I got that same click click!! 14.5 Brigs. New battery and new starter. Guess it wasn't the starter or solinoid. Next thing see if it fluid locked. It turns hard like yours. I. Thought it was getting wore out by a knock at low speed. But when at higher rpm you barely hear it. What oil should i use 5w30?
I have a Briggs and Stratton 23 on a Snapper and it seemed like it was dead because it wouldn't even click or anything, finally I got down and wiggled the clutch/ brake switch and it fired up, well while it was running it just completely shut off and won't do anything. So I ordered and new brake/clutch switch and just to be safe a new seat switch as well and put them on. Unfortunately neither one did anything and it won't turn over or click or anything. I even replaced the spark plug. Please any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am assuming it is an electronic issue because it won't do anything.
This issue should be easily diagnosed before you even attempt to start a small engine. As part of your starting procedure you should always pull your dip stick to check the oil.
That’s a really good point - to always smell the dipstick for fuel. Of course at 5:00 T-Bone covers a range of diagnostics which make this video well worth watching.
Hello! I have a riding mower with Briggs EX1900 intek. Weird thing. I’ve adjusted both valves to .004 It will turn over and hesitate at compression, then crank. If I turn it off and try to crank again, seems the battery doesn’t have enough power. Battery bolts show 12v. Oddly enough, if I turn flywheel by hand to the compression point and then just passed there, the engine cranks fine. Is it bad to continue turning the flywheel by hand to get it cranked? Will that damage anything?
I have the same thing happened to me I diagnosed it 3 minutes I checked the oil had gas in it right there it is change the oil cleaned out the cylinder put some starter fluid in it started it up run like a bear and now I turn the gas off when I'm not using it and let the carburetor empty before I start
Great video, thank you. I’ve got a Kohler Command Pro 23 that won’t start. When you turn the key the flywheel and blades turn a hair then stop. Can’t turn the flywheel by hand at all. Changed the spark plugs and no gas came out. Changed the oil and it was dark but seemed fine, wasn’t overfilled. I put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes and still can’t get the flywheel to move any. Any advice? I sure would appreciate it.
Well now this was a interesting video, but besides being a carburetor to me, it almost seemed like it was a valve adjustment problem keeping it from wanting to turnover properly. Anyway, that's what I was thinking but then to find out it was the carburetor.
...enjoyed the video T-Bone....as usual, great diagnosis and repair.....just curious, do you think the problem with the old carb was a stuck solenoid valve or a float valve that allowed gas into the cylinder?....🙂
Thank you. A stuck solenoid will NOT cause a fuel leak. The problem is, in this case needle and seat along with an O-ring on the plastic piece below the seat. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
So a few quick questions, why do all manufactures say never use paper filters on Gravity feed fuel systems and second why not clean and rebuild the Carburetor when the only issue was most likely a dirty needle & seat? It is amazing what Hydro lock can lock a motor that solid.
First question. They have no idea what the are talking about. The proper paper filter does a better job and flows perfectly. (50 years experience talking). 2nd question. Due to poor quality fuel with ethanol and poorly designed carburetors that have not high and idle adjustment we just replace junk with better junk. Can I fix them? Yes. Do i? In some cases yes. Nikki Carburetors are not worth the chance I take of a customer coming back with a problem. The real problem is the regulation on small engines when they should be concentrating on their private jets. I can go on and on.
No doubt about the paper filter over the screen filter for cleaner fuel but for me I'm old real old school so I always prefer reworking a carb but you are right time is money & the part is cheap too. @@RaleysSmallEngines
I forgot to step on the clutch before starting my Troy Bilt Pony mower. Now it won’t start. It had turned on just a minute ago without any issues when I stepped on the clutch. The engine does not crank, but just a click that I can hear from the starter solenoid when trying to start it. The engine fan barely spins when turning it on, but I was able to rotate it when I took the cover off the engine. Spark plug did not have much carbon build up & just did an oil change recently. Any suggestions?
Make sure battery cables are tight and corrosion free. Check the oil level, if it's over filled and smells like gas then it's hydro locked, check for dirt at clutch/brake safety switch. Good luck!
@@Mrs.T-bone it was a bad battery. The battery tested ~11.59 volts or nearly 12 volts. I didn’t know a good battery should be over 12 volts. Thank you.
I have a mower that hesitates turnin over the first revolution, I don't think this is the problem though. it's a v twin that I believe has a compression release lobe on the camshaft and I've read about those having trouble
@@RaleysSmallEngines thanks for the response. I was watching this video because I have a Cub cadet that is burned out two starters and wondering if based on your test it is the valves out of spec. I'll have to watch that video and see how to adjust it. The electrical system is fine and I have done corrosion prevention and all the contacts and made sure the grounds are all clean. Thanks for the great and clear content.
If the engine is blowing oil from the exhaust with no apparent engine case damage and the dipstick reads overfilled, drain said oil/gas mixture replace with fresh oil and rebuild or replace carb or install in line fuel shut off valve before carburetor. Good luck.
Hey chief just got one more today it's Mercury. 16.5ohv it turns to a certain point and stops the oil is good just change it a few minutes ago. Before that I removed the sparkplug and gas poured out but the dipstick didn't smell of gas.. And when it stops it's takes both hands to turn it than it frees up and turns until it hits it once more. and then I have to turn it over with my hands once more. . . I mowed with it earlier today but now I have this issue. . Please advise. Thank you kindly 😊
Just a guess on my part. I think when you were able to force the engine to turn it forced gas out the exhaust, then it would turn over easy enough. Still in my opinion it would be the carburetor. A stuck open needle and seat would cause the problem you're having. Gas in the cylinder, not necessarily in the oil. I hope this helps, good luck
My engine had a bunch of fuel in the spark plug and when I drained the oil it was very diluted with fuel. I changed out the oil, filter, carburetor and it’s still locked up not wanting to turn over. Any suggestions?
You make it look easy 😎. Quick question. Do the 18.5 replacement brigs cams last. After replacing them? I'm working on a custom mower project. Went and got a new 08 motor ahhh. Lol. Now i worry 😂. Keep up the good job 👍
I got a John Deere L120 With a 20HP Briggs with 568 hrs on it. Was out mowin a field of normal grass when about 30 minutes in she just quit cold, deck on, and at full power. She wouldn't start, just clicked. Tried again a few times and she wouldn't make a click anymore. It's locked now and won't turn over. Took a look at the fuse and it was a blown (yellow 20) went to the store and replaced it. It Tried to start but went back to the click and won't turn over at all. I've done some work on it since I bought it off a friend. Oil change, new filters, new oil filter, deck belt, new battery, grease, new fuel ect. While running it had a full tank and hadn't used much fuel when it quit. Fuel filter had fuel in it too. Can't get to it because she's in storage now. But when I do what do you recommend I do? Btw I put fuel stabilizer in it before putting it away so hopefully that'll help prevent further problems.
That's a weird one. Can you turn motor over by hand via flywheel? If not, maybe hydro locked, (fuel leaked into oil crank case) or seized engine. If it blew the fuse a second time then an electrical issue. Good luck!
@@Mrs.T-bone I can't turn it at all by hand. It moves slightly then stops. Won't start because of that. I assume it's hydro locked with fuel. When I get to the mower, I'm going to see if that's the problem and hope the engine isn't toast. If it is, it'll suck buying a new one.

10w30w
good job t bone
Thank you my friend
Clear and concise! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Check out my Just Clicks video. It explains a lot
@@RaleysSmallEngines Thank you bud!
Good tech.. good stuff man
Thank you
Hey T-Bone, where did you get the oil extractor pump?
I made it out of PVC. I have two videos on it that shows some funny fails in the making. Check them out if you get a chance.
Thanks man!!!!
Thank you
Hey there I was just wondering what year that mower was that you are working on
is there an oil tasting video? How do I develop a palate to diagnose the oil content?
🤣 🤣
Got a link for that universal joint?
Great info 👍
Glad it was helpful!
It will not damage it. Make sure your battery terminal bolts are tight also.
Anyway, that's what I was thinking but then to find out it was the carburetor.
...enjoyed the video T-Bone....as usual, great diagnosis and repair.....just curious, do you think the problem with the old carb was
a stuck solenoid valve or a float valve that allowed gas into the cylinder?....🙂
Great work T-Bone!
Thank you.
How did you get the gas out the engine?
Oh yeah thanks t bone
You are welcome my friend glad you liked it
I have a mower that hesitates turnin over the first revolution, I don't think this is the problem though. it's a v twin that I believe has a compression release lobe on the camshaft and I've read about those having trouble
Look at the video I posted last Friday. Hope it helps.
Do customers care about it coming back clean and detailed or is that mostly for flipping mowers to sell?
If they bring it dirty they get it back dirty lol. We don't flip mowers. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
@@DefensorFortis yes check out our video on valve adjustment and the camshaft video. They will explain a lot.
Where's the oil filter I have a very Similar tractor and I can't find the Oil filter is there one?
My friend, I have an Engine blown up with oil out, can you tell me what is the diagnostic. thank you
it's fooked :)
@@bertgrau3934 ok thank you I'll check it out
My engine had a bunch of fuel in the spark plug and when I drained the oil it was very diluted with fuel. I changed out the oil, filter, carburetor and it’s still locked up not wanting to turn over. Any suggestions?
Make sure your battery is fully charged and cables are tight.
Hey Carl what's wrong with this..... IT AINT got no gas in IT!!! Lmao 😂
Good luck!
Also, 1st things, Turn off blades and make sure battery is fully charged 😊
@@Mrs.T-bone I can't turn it at all by hand. It moves slightly then stops. Won't start because of that. I assume it's hydro locked with fuel. When I get to the mower, I'm going to see if that's the problem and hope the engine isn't toast. If it is, it'll suck buying a new one.
Good job
Thank you
Briggs 18 horse piston not moving cranks over fine any idea what the problem is
