    Different towns have different rules so always read the sign to see if motorcycles are allowed

    Some of the bus lanes in Derby allow motorcycles at all times while others even on the same road don't allow motorcycles, which is confusing especially for a learners.

      Yes, it can be a pain, but we just have to read the signs for each bus lane.

    at 8:35 you seem to be in position 1 when the bus lane is on the left. Is this correct or should we be in position 2 when we are riding along side a bus lane?

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  Рік тому +2

      Position 2 is fine. Looking in my mirrors there was nothing coming up in the bus lane, but plenty of oncoming traffic, so I chose P. 1 as a safer alternative. That said, it might also be because I am so used to riding in P. 1 down that road behind my students I may have just been on autopilot whilst trying to concentrate on making sense for the video 😂. Good question! Thanks for asking 😊

    One situation that I don't suppose comes up very often, but was the cause (partly) of my failed Mod 2 - cars parked in a bus lane. The lane was not in use for buses at the time, so some people had parked in it. I declined to use the lane because of that, but the examiner handed me a serious fault saying there was sufficient distance between the groups of parked cars for me to use the bus lane for a short time. Can't say I agreed, but that seems to be DVSA's approach to the matter.

    Biggest issue is the signs for usage cannot be read while moving. They are way too small. So I agree in your local area you can take the time to stop and read the signs so you know on your daily drives when you can and can't use them.
    When you travel to a new area, there is zero chance of seeing a bus lane while moving and being able to read the sign and decide to use it or not. This is why most people never use them. It's easier on a bike to stop a read it. In a car forget it.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  Рік тому

      I'm not sure I agree. There are usually multiple signs on the approach and I can read them all. Perhaps an eye test might be sensible? 😉

    I remember the first time I saw a bus lane sign. It essentially read 'This is a bus lane, in order to figure out if you can drive in it you have to first read this chart of times below..times of operation:' then I'd driven past it and it was too late. I'm convinced they were taking the Mickey when they designed those signs!😂

      Some bus lanes do allow motorbikes: it depends on where you live. This will be clearly shown on the sign with a motorbike symbol (not a pedal cycle). But don't assume just because one bus lane allows them they all do. Bristol for example has the majority which do allow motorbikes but at least one that doesn't. Thanks for taking the time to comment 😊

      @@motorcyclelessonsukyou should tell these delivery riders this, they always go in front and sit in the CYCLIST box and use cycle lanes.
      They also drag thier feet doing low speed manoeuvres.
      They're literally cbt riders and you can tell by thier lack of understanding and skill.
      I don't even acknowledge them as motorcyclist. And don't get me started on thier tailgating and lack of life savers as well as swerving between Lanes and riding into on coming traffic.
      They're lawless tyrants.

    I have a question - if the bike is in the bus lane legally and there are cars in the right lane and the biker sees a car in front (indicating in plenty of time) with their intention to turn left (so crossing the bus lane) what does the bike have to do? Should it slow down and give way to the car in front wanting to turn left of should the biker presume the car with stop in it's lane and wait for the biker to pass before turning left into the road? Thanks

    I live in Bristol where bus lanes are legal to use on motorcycles at all times with one or two odd exceptions. I love the filthy looks I get from car drivers in the daily Brislington traffic jam when I sail past in the bus lane. I don't suppose half of them realise that I'm perfectly within my rights to do so. Hey ho, gives them plenty of time to faff about with their phones which pretty much every other car driver does the moment they hit a traffic queue.

    I live in Swindon and we're allowed to ride in most bus lanes here (if not all; I can't recall one disallowing motorcycles but I don't know every area). Is it OK to cross the solid white line to enter a bus lane when I'm allowed to use it? I see your students do it at 12:30 mark. I couldn't find any restrictions on that in the Highway Code, but maybe I just suck at searching :D

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk

      but more suited to touring and long distance comfort. The CB650R will have a review coming shortly, also an excellent bike, super smooth, but totally different to the 500. Rather depends on the sort of riding you intend to do, whether you want luggage etc etc. Thanks 😊

    Would not using a bus lane when it was 'available' constitute as a 'fault' on your test? Have to say I hate 'stuff' overtaking me on the inside in the UK., it just feels so un-natural to me and this is probably the only place it occurs. I'd hate to be learning to ride these days 'they' just make it as hard as possible to 'pass'. You should point that gentleman that leaves his indicator on at some of your 'other halfs' videos. He's the only guy that pushes his indicator button as much as I do...🤣

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  11 місяців тому

      Depends on the situation at hand. Could be a fault if turning left across the bus lane without the appropriate checks or even a fail if there is traffic behind, and whilst not using the bus lane the rider doesn't get up to speed and therefore holds the traffic back. There's all sorts of scenarios where it could result in a fault, or not, depending on the actual situation at hand.
      Haha yes Russ is especially good at cancelling indicators 😂

      I have just failed mod2 for not using a suspended bus lane. There was no traffic in either the bus lane or the main lane to the right I was in. The only other road user at the time was my examiner, so nobody was impeded or no cars were under taking us as the bus lane and right lane were totally empty along a 40mph straight road.
      I had no other faults (even no minors) other than the not using the bus lane. And as I said a got a flat fail for that alone.
      I can understand a potential minor for it, but a flat fail Seems totally harsh and all a bit of a con and money making imho.
      Ps I’m already a car driver so for over 30years. But generally don’t drive in city’s so bus lanes just aren’t a thing where I live and work.
      Thought failures were due putting yourself or other road users in danger and riding/driving dangerously. Picking a clear lane and sticking in it and getting a fail for it just does not seem just and fair.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  9 місяців тому

      @@depthjunkie1 is it possible you might have missed something in the examiner's debrief? The highway code does stipulate you should be using the left of the available lanes, so perhaps the examiner considered you unware of this particular rule of the road? Were you maintaining the speed limit? It's possible the examiner has made a decision based on something else relevant to the situation, or even made a mistake. They are only human after all 🤷

    • @depthjunkie1
      @depthjunkie1 9 місяців тому

      @@motorcyclelessonsuk yes maintaing the 50pmh speed limit. Road completely empty of other road users in both lanes (bus and main lane) main lane had an arrow facing straight upwards showing direction of flow.
      I can understand a possible minor saying you could have used the bus lane, and then if you had too many minors adding up to a fail.
      But when everything else was clean, other than the above example that was a fail.
      I cant understand how it’s a fail, when I learnt to drive 30yrs ago a major was a dangerous manoeuvre or something you did that endangered yourself or other road users. Lots of minors added up to a fail.
      Nobody was in danger, no other road users were affected (as there weren’t any) so 2 lanes both going straight I can’t see how it becomes an instant fail.
      Really does just seem any excuse imho,

    Don’t you have any bus lanes in your area which motorcycles can use? We often can use them, depending of council. Richmond, Kensington, Westminster are good to us. Hammersmith and Hounslow not so much. But some people use them anyway. Mostly scooters with L plates.

      🤣 So true. The worst thing ever dreamed up..and the 'superior' rich people in their electric vehicles can use the bus lane...but you motorcyclists can't 😠 Just what you want, a 'silent' car comimg up on your inside whether you are on the bike or in the car. Madness, especially in the UK, where you rarely expect to be overtaken on the inside.
