Replacing The Carburetor On A John Deere 14SE Lawn Mower

  • My John Deere 14SE lawn mower has been running strong for years. Literally starts with one pull every time, even after sitting all winter, which is impressive for a mower that was made in the late 1980's (like me). Over the past year or two I swapped out the wheels, replaced the clutch (that was a tough one), put on a new blade and just replaced the filter and oil last week. It was starting to run pretty rough with the RPM's revving, it died getting bogged down once or twice, and it just couldn't cut through the thick grass like it used to. In the past my brother cleaned out the carburetor, but I figured for $12.64 on Amazon ( AFFILIATE LINK: amzn.to/457MSze ) I would just try out a new one. I have never replaced a carburetor on a lawn mower before, but watched part of a video (skipped around a bit) and figured it wasn't rocket appliances.
Since I'm not expert, I mostly just filmed the process, that went surprisingly smooth, to see how long it would take me to figure out (about 20 minutes or so). It's really not that difficult and I'd imagine most people could tackle this on their own.
Steps to replace on a John Deere 14SE (and I'd assume quite a few other mowers):
    1. Clamp gas line to carburetor
    2. Disconnect gas line from carburetor (little clamp holds it on, might need to give it a good wiggle and tug to get it free)
    3. Remove the two bolts holding the carburetor in place (I believe they were 10mm)
    4. Remove the throttle cables and spring from the carburetor - Definitely want a needle nose for this.
    5. Remove the carburetor from the motor and air filter housing
    6. Clean up the surfaces and surrounding area.
    7. Match up the gaskets (I was thinking about reusing the originals since they were a little different than what came in the package, but ended up having one tear on me so I went with the new ones)
    8. Reconnect throttle cables and spring to the new carburetor
    9. Run the bolts through the air filter housing, new gasket, carburetor and 2nd gasket - thread back on to the motor and tighten down
    10. Reconnect the gas line and remove the clamp
I'm not sure if I should have primed it with a little gas before installation, but all I had to do was let the gas run to it (with a little persuasion as you can tell from the video) and then after a few minutes it fired right up like it should. This mower doesn't have a little pump or anything like some mowers have to prime things. I didn't need to make any adjustments otherwise and it went straight into mowing the yard. I could honestly feel the increase in power and everything it had been missing.
Either way, replacing the carburetor on a John Deere 14SE lawn mower isn't too hard and very inexpensive.

Sorry. It probably wouldn’t be good to follow anyway since that was the first and only time I have done that.
