Mappy needs more love in general. This is a really amazing game. The fact this game is not as popular as other Arcade games like Dig Dug, Pacman, and Galaga boggles my mind, even to this day. Heck, in the Namco Museum compilations, I spend more time playing Mappy much, much more than playing Pac-Man because I find Mappy more fun and enjoyable.
It's cool how pac man uses the trampoline from this game in smash bros for WiiU. Also one of his taunts is pulling mappy out of his pocket, among other classic Namco games.
One of my favorite arcade games. Never got to play the real arcade version until 2 nights ago. Retro arcade bar opened in my city that has it. I love the oversized marquee on top, really makes it stand out from the other cabinets
I remember playing this game when I was younger....before my parents split. I just remembered this game and I always watch videos of it because it brings back good memories 😌
I played the Famicom (NES) version in my childhood (through a Famiclone), it was one of my favorite games, there's a lot of strategy in this game, once you know how the springs and the cats works. Now, seeing all this version, the Famicom version seens to be the most accurate version to the original Arcade version, i can't say if the Playstation version is an actual remake for the system, or just a emulator running the arcade version.
First of all let me say that I love all of your "Let's Compare" videos. I've always been obsessed with the different ports of games I like and how unique a lot of them are to their specific platform. I especially favor this one on account that you included some really obscure ports like the FM7, NEC 8801 and the various Sharp computers. I love how, on the Sharp X68000 version the computer was remade from the TRS-80 looking computer icon to Sharp's Duel Tower design.
I’m not really sure what my obsession with these “compare” videos were when I was younger, but they are interesting. Mappy was always my favorite classic Namco game. Played it on the Ms. Pac Man plug and play way back when. I miss that thing. Anyway I hope you’re doing okay whoever reads this
Good news! It finally happened :) You can get both the original Mappy and its sequel Hopping Mappy recently on Arcade Archives for the Switch and PS4/5.
I remember playing the arcade and NES versions of this game back in the day. Very few people know that you can "slam" the door while passing through it and hit the cats. Getting a high score by getting each item in pair and increase the multiplier per successive pair
CloudySkies17695 I know, that version just feels like a port of Mappy on the GBC, it feels NOTHING like a regular ol´ gba game. The music is bad, the graphics are bad, just everything except the GBA has a taller screen.
I love Mappy! :) It's my favorite arcade game of all time! Out of all the versions of Mappy is shown in this video, the only versions of Mappy I played are the original Arcade version, Famicom/NES version, and Game Gear version. My favorite version of Mappy is no doubt the original Arcade version(Arcade version usually is the best version in these kinds of games), and my second favorite version is the Famicom version. I like the Game Gear version of Mappy, it's still really fun, however, what bothers me about that version is the screen crunch and the weird AI of the Meowky gang in that port, but I still have a really good time with it(What's sweet, is it gives new really good levels). Great video. I would've love to see what an Atari 2600 version of Mappy could've look like, but it doesn't exist unfortunately :(
jc feldman same. when I was younger (I'm 16 now) we had the box joy stick games we used to play on the box tv's. I used to play mappy, pacman, galga, rally x, dig dug, all the old good games
I think it's mainly the video quality's fault or emulation issues. When you play the actual GBA cartridge of Mappy, it looks and sound better than in this video. The GBA version of Mappy is basically a Famicom version ported to the GBA as part as a Famicom mini series. There was a time when NES games are ported to the GBA, and Mappy is one of those games that's picked to port over to GBA(The NES/Famicom version of course) as the Famicom mini series. It's only released in Japan though. I heard they port NES/Famicom games to the GBA to celebrate NES/Famicom's anniversary at the time.
I looked up different footage of the GBA version, and it looked and sounded A LOT better. I honestly don’t know why it looks and sounds so fucked up in this video.
I LOVE mappy. I used to play it on 3DS. I was looking forward to playing it in the actual arcade, but since they were "better" games, it got kicked out.
God I love this game. Only have it on Namco Museum DS, and i lost that game so I can't play it unless I go to the arcade (which is a little ways away). Highest level I've gotten is 12, but I can only get up to 8 at the arcade lol. I kind of want to learn the song on piano because of how good the tune is. At this point, I'm pretty sure my sister is annoyed with me whistling it all the time. But it really is a great song. This has been my favorite arcade game for a good couple years now (next to Dig Dug). It's cool to see it's been ported to other systems in its life.
soooooo many memories with this game.. one of the hardest games i ever played though, as a kid i used to curse for hours at the tv playing this.. hard as balls but damn was it fun!

Monkeymanlol Official, Good Job with those ratings, except you misspelled "similar" as similarr, and "things" as tings. the Game Boy Advance version had a widescreen view that all the sprites had to be sized down. also, the Game Boy Advance does not have high quality audio, so the music is worse as well. And the NES version was only released for the Famicom (Japanese version of NES) Namco Museum (PSX):Very Close to the Arcade version it was emulated! 10/10 Sharp 68000: Looks 16-Bit, It deserves an 8/10. Also, This shares similar features with the Sharp MZ-2500 and PC-88 ports such as 16-Bit like graphics.
I know it wasnt on here, but I played the arcade version, and the version on the Ms. Pac Man Plug and play thing. between those two, I like the Plug and mPlay version better, if only for the sound being revamped. For example in the arcade, the long sustained notes are just very short ones. It makes it seem like that was only that way because of hardware limitations (and i dont know if thats the case, so please correct me). In the plug and play version, this is changed to one long note. I think it sounds much better than what any other version has in terms of sound.
wait if you're still here I saw "Mappī?" in the description and ... uh, katakana is used for foreign names and loanwords, and for some reason video game characters often have "foreign" names (マリオ Mario, ガノンドロフ Ganondorofu -> Ganondorf), so マッピー (Mappi, but pronounced like Italian and the "i" is long) is probably best translated as Mappy, even in a literal sense (or at least you can get rid of the question mark lol).
Thank you very much for the praise ! lol I appreciate it. a majority of the time People only point out My mistakes but seem to overlook the time it takes to make the video & fail to understand that sometimes mistakes slip through the cracks. The gameboy version is for regular gameboy but is enhanced for the super gameboy for the SNES. This might be why You can't find it. I tagged it as GBC because of it's enhancement for Super Gameboy for the SNES. Hope that answers Your question. :)
Items are on the board in pairs. Once you pick up the first of an item, picking up the second immediately afterwards nets you more points. If you just randomly run around picking up stuff, you won't get as high a score.
I remember playing this a lot when I was 12, I'm only 19 but I prefer this kind of games over today's edgy stuff since I was a kid while every other 12 year old was obsessed with COD and other peew-peew games.Mappy was was one of my fav games at the time, I just wish the NES version was on the Virtual Console, because the arcade version doesn't screen really well on TVs, its format was ok on an arcade machine but just doesn't work for TVs, and it's not the game's fault, of course it wasn't meant to be played on TV, if someone could make a screen extended hack of the arcade version it would be great in my opinion.
I remember as a kid I played this, I don't remember what console it was on, but it was like the arcade/PS original stlye. It might of been a plug n play, Wii, or Playstation 2

Oh, by the way, is the Game Boy Color version of Mappy (8:25) part of a collection or something? I can't seem to find info about that version, I could only find info about the GBA one but not about the GBC. Thanks in advance.

I have Mappy on Famicom and on PS2's Namco Museum 50th Anniversary and PSP's Namco Battle Museum collections. I do enjoy Mappy and got to play it in arcades a few times back in the day, and got to see it on Starcade back in the day played sometimes. I hope to one day get the Namco collection for GB that has Mappy and the one for Super Pac-Man (I think that's on GBC Ms Pac-Man though). One can't go wrong with good arcade ports, and as a collector, I have a bunch of them.
How come the music at GBC and Famicom/NES are shutted up? 6 years ago, that wasn't the case, and i fully enjoyed the theme from said versions back then. What happened now?
The main theme can be found here now.

Can we all just take a minute or two to discuss how much of an underrated game Mappy is?
Doorknob my arcade micro has Mappy
As for mappy
I really wish mappy got more love in the arcades
Mappy needs more love in general. This is a really amazing game. The fact this game is not as popular as other Arcade games like Dig Dug, Pacman, and Galaga boggles my mind, even to this day. actually what he pulls out is random each time
LBF197 [Aaron the Bunny] which is why he said among other classic Namco games?
soz for late response
Pac-Man also has a power bell from Mappy in Smash Bros Ultimate. It’s a update :)
The more modern the game gets gets the more Mappy looks like he's giving people the giant middle finger inside a Chuck E Cheese costume.
Sometimes the game ALWAYS looks modern to me too. Good graphics, and high quality music.
I know that right

Arcade = Best Version
My opinion
yes I agree
Purpulear one of my favorite games
Purpulear Same here I still play the original arcade game with a special game pad that I bought :D
I had the plug in and play that had Pac man Galica the where it mentions the other games I have played the arcade of mappy
Purpulear Game Boy version. Because it looks interesting
The Arcade version is still the best.
Tomer Hanan it's original version there is also browser arcade no Namco released on 2014 only in Japan
I like the ds version
I love how Mappy has a baton but doesn't use it lol, but he sure as hell can fight with those doors!
Stoked to see this game getting love!
OH MY GOSH! I LOVE MAPPY SO MUCH!
All Access Gaming Oh my gosh I hate Weegeidgoingtokillm so much. He ruined Trixie.

One of my favorite arcade games. Never got to play the real arcade version until 2 nights ago. Retro arcade bar opened in my city that has it. I love the oversized marquee on top, really makes it stand out from the other cabinets
I love how each version of the Mappy theme is more melancholic than the last

With all of the arcade archive games on Nintendo switch, I’m surprised that Mappy was not released yet. It definitely should! This one is a classic.

The GBC version is somehow better than the GBA one.
...*How?*
The GBA version is a Famicom Mini, the JP counterpart of the classic NES series. It's an emulated NES/FC game.
Because the GBA is just a direct, low-quality port of the NES version.
CloudySkies17695 I know, that version just feels like a port of Mappy on the GBC, it feels NOTHING like a regular ol´ gba game. The music is bad, the graphics are bad, just everything except the GBA has a taller screen.
wait it´s a classic nes port? lol nevermind then
i have an opinion that this is true for SMB1 too: GBA is under NES Classic series, while GBC literally was remade for the hardware.
It's quite varied over the different platforms. I like the look of the Gameboy Colour version it seems to give is an old style movie feel.
MarioSTAR21 Galaxys Yes it is a bit
Love this game! The Game Gear one looked pretty solid.

The arcade version is so much fun. You can play that on the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary on PS2.
for those who’s wondering what’s the gbc version it’s just namco Gallery Vol.1 just only in japan
Arcade is the only good one. I had a little joystick thing as a kid and i used it for mappy. Great game

Probably the closest thing to the original arcade version was the PlayStation version
That is because the Playstation is an emulation of the actual arcade ROM, StarCat.

Your profile is Goro/Nyamco :) I highly approve this
Oh my god!!
You even did one for mappy 😀

How is it possible for the GBA version to look and sound far worse than the GBC version?!
+Otaking Mikohani I bout the GBA version and it sounds better than it does in video but the graphics still are Famicom quality
GBA often sounded worse than Gameboy. Just a fact of life
I think it's mainly the video quality's fault or emulation issues. When you play the actual GBA cartridge of Mappy, it looks and sound better than in this video. I LOVE mappy. I used to play it on 3DS. I was looking forward to playing it in the actual arcade, but since they were "better" games, it got kicked out.
But Mappy is better than Pac-Man though(We’ll, in my opinion).
The music for the PC-8801 & the Sharp X68000 is surprisingly good!
I guess, though it still reminded me of the Famicom version anyway since some of those titles found their way to the GBA in both Japan and abroad.

One can't go wrong with good arcade ports, and as a collector, I have a bunch of them.
I have the other versions for mappy
I love this game! They have (I think) the Famicom version of this game on nintendo 8 .com (remove the spaces), my childhood relived :)
Still the cutest game ever made by Namco. Of course Dig Dug comes close.
I love mappy
Was the Game Gear version a Japanese exclusive or did it come out in the US. I need to know as I don't really like to import things.
Michael Wolfe The Sega Game Gear version only released in Japan.
Looks more like tom and jerry.
The Name is at the end in the credits along with a clickable link in an annotation to the channel hosting the song. :)
I recall someone decided to remake the game calling it Marippy. It's a PC port where aside from certain changes like sprites for example it's the same
All versions were sold in Japan, except the arcade version.
How come the music at GBC and Famicom/NES are shutted up?
6 years ago, that wasn't the case, and i fully enjoyed the theme from said versions back then.
What happened now?
the sharp x1 version has music thats like a broadway hit music
And the game gear version of the game's music sounds like an early alternate prototype version of the opening theme song of H.T.F.
