en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Land
Pac-Land (パックランド Pakku Rando?) is an entry in the Pac-Man series of arcade video games, released into arcades by Namco, and its American distributor Bally Midway (now Midway Games), in August 1984. It was the first Namco arcade game to use the then-new arcade system later titled as Namco Pac-Land. Pac-Land features parallax scrolling for some of the background elements, a feature that would not become commonplace until the 16-bit console era began much later.
Pac-Land itself is split into trips. In each of these trips the objective is to get the fairy (that is kept under Pac-man's hat) to Fairyland and also to return home to Pac-Man's house. The majority of the trip involves moving from left to right avoiding various obstacles such as the enemy ghosts, water spurts and quicksand traps. Each trip is divided into a number of rounds, the end of which provides Pac-Man with bonus points depending on how much time he has left and also his position in jumping at the end of each round. If the player runs out of time before finishing the round, Sue, the purple ghost will speed up rapidly.
The penultimate round of a trip ends with Pac-Man entering Fairyland and returning the fairy under his hat to the Fairy Queen. In return the Fairy Queen gives Pac-Man magic boots. For the final round of the trip, Pac-Man has to travel from right to left back home. For assistance he uses the magic boots, which allow him to jump repeatedly while in mid-air. Once Pac-Man completes the trip, he is greeted by Ms. Pac-Man and Baby Pac-Man. In the US release of the game, Pac-Man's cat and dog in the cartoon series, Sourpuss and Chomp-Chomp, are also there to welcome Pac-Man home. Pac-Man then begins his next trip following the same objectives as before, although the difficulty increases.
Gameplay
As in the original Pac-Man, there are fruit which appear to eat for bonus points and power pellets to turn the ghosts blue and vulnerable. A hidden item (sometimes accidentally dropped by the ghosts) is a Flagship from Galaxian, which rewards 7650 points when collected (a reference to Namco's goroawase number of 765). The Galaxian Flagship is a long running cameo that appears in the Namco-made Pac-Man games. There are also hidden bonuses in the game, eating ghosts in a certain order will give extra time and pushing an obstacle in the opposite direction can give extra lives, invincibility, ballons to collect for points and warps. - Ігри
"Pac-Land" is probably the first video game to ever be based on a movie or TV show that also happens to be based on a video game. ;)
Casey Decker б
It really feels like Hanna-Barbera added a lot to the Pac-Man mythos, didn't they? Heck, I don't think Pac-Man 2 could have existed without its influence. Lots of stuff was changed, but lots of stuff felt familiar too.
@@jessragan6714 Right? I was just thinking that while looking through the Pac-Man Wiki.
Casey Decker i believe the TV show (is it official or made by a different company?) came out after this game
Hays Coleman the Pac-Man animated TV series came out in either 1981, 1982, 1983 before the Pac-Land arcade game in 1984 or 1985
Funny how the handheld version (Lynx) is the only port that had parallax scrolling.
Who Knew The Lynx Was Capable Of Background/Foreground Scrolling?
My brother and I had pacland on TurboGrafx 16 and it was awesome on the TurboGrafx 16. It looked a lot like the arcade.😀👍
The MSX version is just so fucking pretty omg.
This game was ahead of its time--a side-scrolling platformer set in a cartoony world before Super Mario Bros. The Wikipedia article even claims that Shigeru Miyamoto cited it as an influence.
This is a Wrench!!! I want to go swimming ChompChomp..noo....THIS IS A WRENCH!!!
PFFFFF HAHAHAHAHA THAT'S JUST FUNNY!!!!
this game is where pac-man got his jump sound, his down special and his stage in super smash bros. for wii U and ultimate
The TurboGrafx/Pc Engine version is really similar to the Arcade version. It’s like a console edition of the arcade.
🤯 * MINDBLOWN *
Sharp 88000 and PS versions are almost 100%, TG16 looks and sounds off
i agree. i actually have pacman megamix. a pacman fangame.
@@FuckYourFeelings88 What about the PS1 Namco Museum version?
When I ran into this in the late '80s, I couldn't help wondering how the negotiations between Hanna- Barbera, Namco, and probably Midway went for that project. A safe bet is that somebody pointed out that the shoe was on the other foot relative to 1982 (the animated series airing on ABC).
worst for these 3 things
SFX: ZX spectrum
graphics: NES
colors: ZX and MSX at a 2 way tie
HEY YOU FORGOT THE MUSIC
+KJ Setser Music: ZX Spectrum
FairPlayer Games the spectrum has no music so it would be unfair if i did music for spectrum
J Waughtal, KJ Setser wanted the music so i did the music
Actually the Speccy does have music if you load it into a 128K Spectrum as the AY rendition of the tune comes on. But its certainly a bit of a sham on 48K. And I can't argue with the bad graphics and sound, the Speccy is capable of much better.
There are subtile differences between Namco's Pac Land and Midway's in that the sprites for the US arcade release were modified to coincide more with the cartoon series that came before it. Namco's version gives Pac-Man his typical long nose. pie-eyed look and a hat with a feather on it.
The Spectrum version did have sound (the MSX was a direct port of the Spectrum and the music is identical). The game was also originally going to be full colour, and in 2014 a guy called Ralf fixed it and released the colour version (it's on UA-cam).
The Amiga music is soothing and great
10:37 OUCH MY EEaRRs!!11!!!
Yet It Got The Incorrect Sound Playing And Pacman's Jumping Sprite Looks Wrong.
I think Pac-Land nees the 8 bit sound and not PCM/FM
It sounds like uhhhh...music played on the Sega Genesis or something.
@@CatalinaMaxCisternasJofre Genesis sounds more metallic
Looking at the animation and the expressiveness of the characters, as well as the ghosts and their gadgets, not to mention the sidescrolling gameplay and ESPECIALLY the map it seems to me like this proved to be the inspiration for Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures on SNES.
Maybe that game should have been called Pac-Land 2.
+Osmund Saddler On one hand, I understand that the original Japanese title "Hello, Pac-Man!" isn't exactly the most...western-geared name in existence, so I could see why they tried changing it but, honestly, it suits the game itself better than any alternative I can think of. I dunno "Pac-Man: Emotional Manipulation Simulator" or "Don't Let Pac-Man Get High off of Strange Fruit" don't really work. Pac-Land 2, is however, a far more appropriate title than Pac-Man 2. Still inaccurate, but there's definitely more correlation.
EDIT: I just realized too late how old this comment is. Whoops ;P
Probably if they called it Pac-Land 2 they were expecting a sequel tp the original (You have to control Pac-Man, the characters and the village is tye same etc.
A good name would be Pac-Man Interactive or Pac-World (to not be confused with Pac-Man World) Like they did with Super Mario.
Or also Pac-Man 16.
Pac-Man 2 is ok for me.
@@lunamorley Hello Pac-Man sounds like something on the Wii XD
(Dat's da .)
Maybe Pac in Time is more a Pac-Land 2
Well you see one is a side scrolling platformer the other is a click and point game, they’re 2 different genres, it should’ve just been called Hello Pac-Man! The New Adventures
The Sharp X 68000 title screen is epic
Really like that Amstrad version.
I was lucky to play the arcade machine once.
This looks like a cross-promo with the cartoon.
It is.
Apparently this game actually inspired super Mario bros 1’s side scrolling...
Before Super Mario Bros., there was Pac-Land; however, Pac-Land doesn't have as many hidden stuff as Super Mario Bros. does.
I actually enjoyed this game. I used to have it on the TG16
I played this game on my cousin's Turbografx when I was a teenager, and my older brother and his friends nearly drove me insane because to them, everything in it was a drug reference because the stages are called "trips". But it wasn't as bad as when we played Streets of Rage on Genesis where they said the city you're in is actually San Francisco and everyone/ everything in it was gay and wouldn't shut up about it the entire time we played. No wonder I'm on medication now.
this comment is too epic to be buried in a YT comment section
This damn game was the bain of my life!
It looks really straightforward and easy, but it's really difficult... kinda like Wonderboy in that regards. Actually, if you haven't already, Wonderboy might be a good game to compare - the C64 version was especially good.
I honestly felt like I accomplished something when I finally managed to get used to the controls. Lol. I’ve only played the Famicom version though. I’d love to play the original arcade version.
The turbo graphx 16 and sharp x 6800 nailed the game perfectly
ya
I go for faithfulness compared to arcade regarding control and feel...the Lynx and PC Engine versions are stellar.
I can't believe you can now play in MS Paint in Smash 4.

Does this series not cover regional differences? Because when the game was released in Western territories, it was given quite a big graphical overhaul to match the cartoon.
Not much of one, actually. The main differences are that Pac-Man and his family's eyes were changed to have sclera, and his pets, Chomp-Chomp and Sour Puss, are there to greet him home at the end of each trip. The arcade version here is the American one, and every one afterwards is based on the Japanese version.
Another regional difference is the building in the background. It’s a Christian Church in the Japanese version, but the American version removes the cross to make it more ambiguous.
Not just the graphics, the gameplay was much slower and easier in the Japan version rather than the 'Midway' arcade version shown here... but obviously you lot didn't pay that much attention so you wouldn't have picked that up, but keep on pretending you're experts if it makes you feel better, stupid noobs.
@@wailer27 I highly doubt you even know about Pac-Man lore, chump!
I guess the Atari ST and Amiga versions was where Pac-Man's 8th color is based on while his second color(the blue one) is based on the speed shoes and the 6th color(the white one) might be based on the modern design because of the shoes maybe.
??
Thanks ! I'm glad You are enjoying them. I don't like to add dialogue because I don't want My opinions to overshadow the games. I prefer that good folks like yourself express your knowledge, opinions, & memories of the games You view here. I find that it is far more enlightening & entertaining to read how others experienced these games.
the nes version is waaay too zoomed out for some reason, but it's sooo much moew setailed and colorfull then supermariobros, and the arcade version even predated supermariobros by one year.
The Lynx version always impressed me. I find it funny that many of the versions omit the cross on the church at the end of the first level
Why does the Famicom version look like something that should be on Atari 7800?
7800 would be in a lower resolution mode to display so many colors.
Because the 7800 is better.
That's an insult to the 7800. It could do better.
The color clash in the zx spectrum would not have been better than those almost monochromatic games?
I remember the Pac Land theme song in the Pac Man Cup in Mario Kart
That's like the only time it's been remixed as far as i know. The music is in a kinda tough spot as far as rights go, being based on the old cartoon and all. Which is why it couldn't be used in Smash.
Even then it was just a short leitmotif, however there was another remix of the homeward theme in Pac N Jump, surprised it actually got remixed
Looks like it peaked with the TG-16 version. Question: Do they all control weird? On the TG-16, the buttons move you left and right, and the control pad makes you jump and such.
I like the atari lynx, playstation, turbografx-16 & sharp x68000 version!
Once again, the ZX Spectrum HURTS MY EARS AND SUCKS!
The Speccy was a low spec computer that was designed primarily to teach people programming and was never intended to be a gaming platform. hence why there are very few colours and only very basic sound on the standard 48K model. However in spite of that many coders found great ways of making fantastic games for the computer. Don't judge the Speccy on this game, as it is a very poor example of what could be achieved on the humble Spectrum. I would suggest having a look at games like Jetpac, Sabre Wulf, Manic Miner, Wanted: Monty Mole and indeed Spy Hunter for the Spectrum to have a better idea of what talented programmers were capable of doing with the ZX Spectrum 48K.
The Spectrum is my favourite games machine ever, and I feel very lucky to have grown up with it. It is slow, and not cut out for many types of games, but for simple games it works well. Its simple colours and sound give it a charm and magic that no other games machine has.
For some reason, you press buttons to move, and the D-Pad to move, in which the game has weird controls. I did not know this until I played the NES version. Why would someone program controls like this?

The C64 seems to have a really nice port for a change - usually arcade games are a bit meh, but it looks really good, will have to give it a try. I have a speccy too, but damn I have no plans to try that one :D
Was such a popular cartoon that I knew they would want to make a game of it
And this was even before SMB!
Turbografx 16 got it better.
0:26 I can't wait for Pac-Land in 2812.
The 0 just looks like an 8
Ok apparently I didnt get the joke. I just have the feeling that I'm gonna end up on Reddit sometime soon.
Was pac-land programmed to be mono on the atari lynx?
welcome the box art tengen pacman!
how can i get the game on mame32 0.103u2?
"The NES just got it's 8-bit ass handed to itself" -The AVGN
Lol
thats a good avgn refrrence
Just comparing the 8-Bit home computers...
> 2. ZX Spectrum 3:05
Speccy sucks anyway... i yet have to see a Spectrum game that impresses me.

Um, yeah...

Slowdown hell!!!
> 5. Commodore 64 10:37
NOW we are talking! o/~ I adore my 64, my Commodore 64 o/~
Many games looks better on ZX than C64...
The Speccy isn't meant to be "impressive". It's meant to be charming. Bad conversions like this don't help, but there are over 25,000 titles, and hundreds of great classics.
MSX looks like Master System
I Love Pac Land!
Got a real BAD case of Carpal Finger Syndrome form playing this game (and Joust) back in the day:)
Now i know where pacman in smash 4 gets his jump sound from
and his fire hydrants ;)
The music on the ZX Spectrum is byootiful.
there is no music
FRANK Cifuentes The joke.
Your head
Actually, the Spectrum version does have music, it's just not featured in this clip for some reason. The MSX version was a direct port from the Spectrum and the music is identical.
if they couldn't get the audio (music) to sound right in the Turbo-Grafx port why bother porting it?
Really basic graphics but it is interesting to see which versions do have parallax scrolling and transparent ghosts.
how can the sharp version not be at least arcade perfect when it came out ten years later?!?
Those damn swimming pools always messed me up.
Good video c64 best version think you may have the speccy and msx versions mixed up
There is also an atari 8 bits version; By the way very difficult to find.
What Happens If You Lose All The Pacmen At The Bottom Of The Screen?
The ghost behind you goes really fast and if you get the flying boots you lose them
@J1970 sounds scarier than just killin ya instantly
Sue gets faster and instantly chomps you.
Fun fact:Namco is called namcot in Japan
The best version is the turbo grafx/pc engine
What ever happened to those days where you could get almost any game you wanted regardless of what system you had? Now theese days it's all console exclusives, if you want a game and don't have the console it's for ... Tough S***!
Games arent being made by gamers anymore unless youre indie.
ThePolishGamer Of course in the 80's, games weren't necessarily made by gamer-types.
Unless you own a Switch, console exclusives aren't really a problem anymore. Everything gets a cross-platform release. Plus, in the 80s and 90s, sure, arcade games got ported everywhere (whether or not they were good was another question) but games developed for console were usually locked to the system they launched on. No Legend of Zelda on Sega Master System.
Playstation 4's also got a ton of exclusives like Horizon Zero Dawn and Gravity Rush 2, the only one bucking the trend at the moment is Xbox because you can also get those console exclusives like Gears Of War 4 or Cuphead on PC instead if you want
RetroSteve or unless your the sonic mania team
Dat Pac-Nose
It's also based on the cartoon by filmation.
The first hydrant following the first power pill on trip 1 gets you the blue cap allowing you to eat baby ghosts if you push it backwards. Eat the power pill first so no ghosts are after you.
I tried to acquire footage from that version but it wouldn't play.
128k Speccy version had music, beside that, no difference from 48k :) I think Pac Land was one of first platform games ever.
Donkey Kong: am i a joke to you?
Early version of Pac In Time? lol
How do you get PAC land on iPhone?
NOTICE: The MSX & AMSTRAD Sounds the same.
Accept The Music Is 0.75 Times Slower.
It always amazes me when I see a game like this on the Speccy, it looks and sounds horrible. There were genuinely great games available for that system.
The Lynx version looked great.
Atari Lynx even supports parallax scrolling, something you rarely see in a handheld world (lynx of course is pretty powerful).
he's playing on a 32k zx spectrum look at the 128k spectrum
Arcade Version Synthesizer and TurboGrafx 16 / PC Engine Version Synthesizer are equal
Wingnut4427 - Which version of Pac-Land is available for Wii Virtual console?
TG16
Cool - gotta download it ASAP:) Thanks..
Wii U Has Nes Version.
Mkay? Mkay.
lol on the ZXspectrum version you hear farting when you collect a power pellet
Pac Land review for Nintendo Wii or Turbografx-16
I know the Famicom version was limited compared to the arcade machine, but I feel like it could have been at least a tiny bit better graphic-wise.
To me the tiny sprites look extra cute though. XD Tiny, crappy detail, but kawaii indeed.
Zane Gandini it was probably an early port too. The NES at the later end of its lifespan blew that port away.
Anyone see the title screen typo? It says Namcot. It should say Namco.
Also, I've played Pac-Land Famicom.
I can't turn around
Namco is known as Namcot in Japan.
Bryan Ness Well is Namco lazy in Japan and lay down on COTS?!
In America, we know "Namcot" as NAMCO. Look at all the Japanese "Namcot" games.
Bryan Ness The cot thing was a joke and I've seen a so called "NAMCOT" game before. Take a little break bro.
Sorry for all the posts
You can have a softer landing if you spam the jump button! OF COURSE THE GAME NEVER FUCKING TELLS YOU THAT. EVER.
You missed the NEC PC-8001mk2SR version
Look at 9:57 and there us a cross!?!?!?!
The Sharp was good
The Pac-Man for the NES looks a little cute
Wut did u just say
Pac-Land also on ps3 on Pacman Museum
Pac-Land?!
great game
Sharp X68000 port (version) it does sound a bit out of place in some areas why bother porting it?
0:07 pacland on wii u its on
super smash brothers
The TG16 sound like it has pretty good music then the arcade
its all out of focus this video???
Why is the sound so fucking crappy on the Spectrum version? I know the Speccy wasn't the greatest at sound - but they could have at least included SOME background music.
-zx spectrum: ugly monochome, but even with the hardware limitations I'm sure that something better could have been done!
-msx: zx spectrum port but slow as hell
-amstrad: colourfull as this game must be but with lack of scroll
-c64: very cool, same arcade feelings (thanks to custom chips)
-8 bit videgames: in general all good conversions.
-all the others: did nothing more than the minimum expected of 16-bit machines.
The Spectrum version was originally going to be full colour, and in fact the colour was restored in 2014 by a guy called Ralf, you can find it on UA-cam.
Meh. Pac-Man platformers are okay, but I like running around in the mazes, munching on dots, power pellets, fruits and the ghosts and I also like Pac-Attack.
Why are all these videos using the 48K Spectrum? When this game came out most Spectrum users had the 128k +2 or + 3. With better music. This game was based on the bad Pacman carton. The Spectrum version had arcade-like music. Good game but on all versions, the spring board jump was too hard to do.
The power pelits Make no sound in the Atari st version and I don't like that
0:05 what verson is it?
TG16
Am I only one who likes the cartoon?
I LIKE IT YOU KNOW
Nope, i like it
No, I love it :3
NO I have a dvd to watch of it
I watched it most Saturday mornings.
some serious david lynch shit going on in the C64 audio
woops i met the sharp version not the playstation.

So that was the inspiration of the Pac-Man cartoon show, eh?
No. Actually, The cartoon came first ( the one in the 80's ) & the game was based on it.
@@wingnut-jt5yz Oh. I get it.
