John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers Returns, Part 2 | Broken Record (Hosted by Rick Rubin)

- Опубліковано 8 лис 2022
- Today we’re excited to bring you the next installment of our John Frusciante interview series. John first came on the podcast back in April to help celebrate the release of the Red Hot Chili Peppers album, Unlimited Love. Then he returned in mid-October to discuss Chili Pepper history, one album at a time.
On today’s episode we’ll hear John talk about the Chili Peppers brand new release-their second number one album in six months-Return Of The Dream Canteen. John also picks up a guitar and walks Rick through his pre-show warmup and demonstrates how he came up with the now-classic major to minor chord changes on “Under The Bridge.” And, he talks about how he was able to overcome his desire to impress others while recording Stadium Arcadium.
Stay tuned to the end of this episode for details about part three of what is shaping up to be an intimate series of interviews between Rick Rubin and John Frusciante.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Please part 3 with John please🙏🏽🙏🏽 and can you ask him this?, I would like to know what is the process in the band where john sings alone like in the heavy wing or how they decide when to put a secondary voice
@@alejandrovazquez5553 excellent question
if you're taking request questions, please ask him if AFX is still his favourite musician :-)
I love you Rick doing this, and also the opportunity to hear my ultimate hero is just one of the best times of living... But just to mention to John, Rory Gallagher. Your music is so close, and I am really surprised, that you did not mention, actually never mentioned Rory Gallagher's name... Because of the tapping, about whom invented tapping... Not Rory, but he was the very first pioneer in music whom used it... Check Rory out please... He is like noone else... By the way... this is an amazing podcast and it containes meditation too... Just how wonderful is this thing... I know it is not possible but... I would love to talk to John once in my life, especially about Rory... I would like to know what he thinks of his legacy...
I've listened to the first one in parts, but I've heard Johns stories of his history, and also the history of the band at many different times in the past. So I'm familiar with much of those, as I'm a big fan. I've played Under the bridge mainly on my acoustic guitars 1000's of times now since starting to learn it over 20 years ago. But this information is amazing a lot of it is new to me. Thank you for sharing this information, and all the best for 2023.
Sending an unlimited amount of love and good vibes to anyone who reads this message in the future. I love these interviews.
Back atcha Mr. Rizzo.
I see what you did there with the unlimited love.

I'd just like to say, these interviews with John are making a lot of people happy! 😊
John inspires me to stay sober and practice guitar every night after work. Truly amazing the places this mans art has taken me.
Yes ❤
I doubt John will see this, but I picked up guitar cause of his work in Stadium Arcadium. I’ve been a fan since 89 when I first heard mothers milk. I even got into his solo work. He’s the most influential guitarist in my 48 years of being in this strange world. I love this man.
A true musician’s musician
I'm sure John will see it he lives in this world just like us I'm sure he's looking for all kind of stuff about his self on the internet
@@chadpittman3025 yeah nah, he definitely won't.
Shadows Collide with People is a classic album
@@simmo8539 Shadows Collide With People is my favorite album of all time :).
Imagine the feeling if John made another guitar solo album.
@Wörter And who should be in that band 🤔🤷🏼♂️

@@mertacaban1789 I suggest Josh on Drums , Flea on Bass , Brian Eno on Synth’s , Glen Hansard on Vocals and acoustic guitar and John on Lead Guitar and Lead Vocals 🤟🏻
Nah, electronic stuff he does alone is more interesting.
Ive been devouring frusciante interviews, essays, and documentaries since i was a teenager. Hes always been quite the philosopher, but at this point in time hes SHARP and talking with Rick makes him very concise. We need more of these. They are future historical artifacts.
It's cool to see someone get more articulate and get brave enough to take themselves more seriously over the years, and perservere with saying nuanced things in the public eye. Love him or hate him that description really fits Russel Brand as well.
indeed! his knowledge and music ability heals souls, and is what people need in this world

Such a shame this wasn’t filmed. I’m sure lots of people would love to see John play in this informal way.
So true
I believe rick said he doesn’t film stuff because it puts a pressure on the conversation that might take the authenticity out of it
I’m just grateful and feeling lucky to be able to HEAR this conversation. Such a honor and privilege.
Yeah mate I feel the same.would of been awesome to see.
Revisit the early 00's solo gigs maybe, the borderline for example, London, if you're Jonesing
I could listen to John 24 hours a day...so fascinating!!!
Yes! When he was saying he could picture all the parts of the song and Rick was trying to grasp what the image was he saw.. I was mind blown.
1:09:54 Hearing John talking about Knock Me Down and even trying to sing the outro is such an unbelievable thing, wow! It's been 32 years since they last played it
Knock me Down is a really good song, I like that John has a newfound reverance for the Mother's Milk era because I feel it was a great time for the band
@@andrew19vato Knock Me Down is my favorite song alongside Soul To Squeeze and MM is my favorite era. Unfortunately it is completely forgotten by the band and the fact that John couldn't even remember the chords (despite them being very simple (C# - E - B) and he couldn't even sing the line in key shows that Knock Me Down is long forgotten and swept under their memories. It was still a shock and a beautiful moment for me to hear him talk about it. I wish they could play it one last time. It is a John song, sung entirely by him. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
I listened to knock me down on repeat during a comedown after the heaviest session on MDMA I've ever had in my life a decade ago, and it really helped get me through that day (including a very weird train journey across the UK via train on my own). The outro, with the line "it's so lonely when you don't even know yourself" fucking hit me hard back then. Ever since I was a kid the chilis have been there with me through all the good times and bad. Long story short, I fucking love em
Lol.dude they have played it far more recently than that
@@paulharrisonadventuregearm5457 would you like to bet for a billion dollar?
I never thought I'd get to hear John speak openly for such extended periods of time. I really hope we get to hear that part 3 soon! So much cool insightful stuff in here, and I loved hearing him play guitar while explaining his thought process.
Well, hope you now enjoy part 4 😁
These two need their own podcast 💯
I would love to hear JF ask others questions.

1:04:27 How John whips out this amazing cover of this song with just a guitar into a mic is honestly mindblowing to me. It feels rehearsed, and it feels well prepped, but it was totally in promptu. That's talent.

John should be a weekly guest. I believe he os the best guitarist of the modern era and we would all benefit from what he has to say.
John is a great guitarist I'm glad he's back in the RHCP-it makes me so Happy .His personality belongs in the band, they truely have bonding friendships all four of them -Anthony, Flea , Chad and Thank God John's back in Red Hot Chili Peppers!
At 53:41 John and Rick are talking about the feeling they get when they know something is right and they're trying to describe it. That's called relevance realization.
I was so mind blown by all that exchange
I know it’s been played sooooo many times, but Under the Bridge is and forever will be one of my favorite songs. It’s a brilliant piece of songwriting, and the way it transitions from that happier feel to that epic outro, which fully reveals the darker side of the song, hits me right in the gut.
Awesome
I never skip Under the Bridge no matter how many times I've heard it.
asking John Frusciante to spontaniously pick up an acoustic guitar has to be one of the greatest ideas Rick Rubin ever had! Thank you so much :D
I really love how this podcast goes into these abstract details of John's creative process and outlook on creativity.
It's cool to talk about historic events and all but what they talk about here is timeless.🙏

Rick and John? You could upload 100 episodes & I would listen to them all...
In 2004 I walked into a music store having just discovered californication.
They had this nice looking album from John with this pink/purple cover and the amazing title "Shadows Collide With People" And I had never felt what I felt before on first listen...
This music felt so familiar. Almost as if it was partly made by me myself.
I felt, if I was to make an album, expressing the way I felt during that time, that this was what it would have sounded like.
It was then and there that my love for John Frusciante and his music was born.
And then I was obsessed.
That’s exactly the feeling I had when first exposed to him.
I *adore* this album.
13:34 What an amazing question / change of topic. Rick is such a fantastic interviewer, and the fact he's put out three Frusciante podcasts is a treat
Yes, you never once think Rick is asking some pre-conceived question or something. Simply amazing to contrast this style with that of late night talk shows, etc.
@@DesignRhythm 100%, you can tell that in most JF interviews that he looks/sounds uncomfortable, but with Rick everything seems to flow so effortlessly, really a treat to listen to.
They know each other so well , and Rick knew from BSSM that John is a musical genius , and on the comeback of John’s last time , you can hear he cleared his head in his speech and memory of things from way back , I also luv his theoretical knowledge of music and his eagerness to learn new things and insert that in his songs , for the Chili Peppers and his solo stuff 🤟🏻🤙
It is so great to hear how clearheaded and articulate John is nowadays. Just warms the ol’ heart to hear one of my favorite guitarists sounding healthy and as creative as ever. 😊
you literally could never tell he was once a smack, with no teeth living in his own filth. amazing!
the thing that Rubin did with Johnny Cash got me thinking...it would be so incredibly awsome to start a similar project with John Frusciante!..just him and an acoustic guitar and a ton of covers..oh man
i like this idea
Keep bringing him back!!!
I know John is sometimes really private.... but fuck I love when he opens up. He has so much insight 🙏😍
I love he shows love for Zappa and beefheart
When he started breaking down the scales...I was in guitar heaven
These must be my favorite bits of podcasts I've listened to. The way Rick can connect and talk with John is astounding, and John opening up and letting me or anyone else listening connect with him is also just amazing.
He is savant tier when it comes to guitar and melody in general. Hendrix, Van Halen, Frusciante. It’s not about technicality, it’s about the substance, IMO at least.
Well, VH was a high point in the meeting area between technique and originality.
Frusciante gets put up with those 2 a lot but no one brings up the amount of Fripp or Belew in his playing. He's an art rock guitarist IMO.
@@shawnmcvey7789 Cobain and Picciotto as well. I'm not saying that EHV and Hendrix were influences, although the were, I'm saying Frusciante is at their level when it comes to what he does with a guitar.
Yay. Done said imo on The internet. Salute. 🙏
At 17:07 John says “functioning as a single unit”
But did Gadinski hear the tracks?
I laughed when I heard that. A true classic.
Love John !!!! Keep this series going !!!!!
I could listen to them both forever
Do this every month with John Frusciante pls!!! 🤟🇿🇦
John giving us a guitar lesson is like an early Christmas gift this year❤😩. Love this man.
Have adored JF’s guitar playing and artistry for 30 years. What an absolute treat! Can’t wait for part 3!
I love these conversations with John! Hope they release whatever songs didnt make it onto these two albums.. could be some great B sides or maybe even a third album for 2023!
Listening to John talk in so much detail and so deeply when he explains everything makes me happy. I love listening to what he has to say
"The Will to Death" really has perfect sequencing for me personally! It's such a cathartic listen, because it perfectly captures the subject matter. First there's lots of turmoil and noise and towards the end the songs sound exhausted, yet relieved.
John’s music has given me so much joy. His work has brought tears and allowed me to see the world more differently. The last time I seen him in Orlando was unbelievable, an electrical storm before the show John tapped into. Everyday I try to play something John plays but sounds nothing like him but similar notes connect me someway. He has kept me on the edge of my seat since 88.
I've been listening to John since 1989 when I was 17 years old. I've followed his career since then. I was always so blown away as he was 2 years older than me and was extremely talented at such a young age.
These conversations are absolutely fascinating. So free of bullshit and cliche.
Love the Joe Jackson song and the connection with Under the Bridge - interesting insights!
Oh my god even more!?! Thank you for blessing us with so much stuff to listen to! I can't thank you enough. I just listened to the other second part of Rick and John talking couple days ago. Thank you!!

What a mind this guy has
Seriously. I am so glad Rick did these interviews with him. He’s such a creative force and IMO a guitar legend at this point. It’s such a treat to get these insights into how he understands and creates music, how he practices, how he relates to music, etc.
So excited! I just re-watched part 1 yesterday!

Please keep this series going. I love how both of you explore music, so eye opening.
This was way more important to me than the rhcp albums. So many of the artists ive studied since i was a child and throughout adulthood are shared by Frusciante. I have printouts of chord and scale charts from holdsworths instructionals pinned to my walls, and some of my earliest experiences with recording music were trying to recreate zappa songs by ear by layering guitars. I spent many years looking in a mirror with my guitar and playing randy rhoads songs, pretending i was him. I couldnt be prouder to be part of that musical tradition, even as a very very small part. To be able to hear the most prominent and recent member of that musical ancestry sharing so much of his thinking means the world to me. His explanation of how he sees and feels music especially was important to me because I've done the exact same thing all my life since i got my first audio players and toy instruments when i was very little. Im not aware of anyone else who talks about music this way. I spent some time in college studying western philosophy and ive read dozens of philosophy books but art and music are rarely talked about, and if it is with very little practical application or insight into actual experience. I think ive read more about why there's an avoidance to talking about art and music than anyone actually talking about it.
Theres this idea in a lot of ancient tribal religions that we owe what we have to those who came before us - ancestor spirits. we owe them a debt that cant be fully repaid, only passed down through more generations. Every generation the debt owed grows and so do the gifts we inherit. I will do my best to do that with my own music students and in my own art.
I stand in the mirror wackin off to this comment, uhhhh
Been looking forward to this - two legends 🙌🏻🎸
Beautiful interview ❤️ love John
Rick and John I appreciate you both for capturing lightning in a bottle each time you do an episode. I learn a lot and get inspired with each new edition.
Wow. Three words for that episode…Beautiful. Helpful. Calming. Thank you
Such an interesting interview! I wouldn't expect any less from these two guys!
I can't get over how fascinating this conversation is.. dear god Rick and John keep doing these talks!
The whole topic of sequencing an album is very interesting. Even if you aren't releasing on vinyl, its very important to order the songs on an album in such a way that forfills and makes you want to keep listening 🎶😊
Best john interview, I learned a lot from this. Thank you!
Continue more episodes with John, please 😍
As a painter I have something similar to what John is talking about. In my case of course it is maybe even more 'visual', as it usually ends up being a painting. But it all starts with the hint/feeling/presentiment of something that is going to take physical form. Sometimes it's more or less defined, but there is no doubt that this is the SOMETHING that makes art happen. I believe everyone can experience that, just stay opened and relax, you cannot force it!
I was soooo hoping there was video of his guitar warmups!
My brain is so happy right now, after spending 1 hour and 21 minutes with these two amazing and relaxing voices.
Thank you for these sessions with John. Absolutely incredible, never heard him talk so much!!
It takes about an hr to kick in, but when it does, the conversation gets real interesting. They speak about the mysteries of life, and it is about the most you could say about it with spoken words. Good stuff.
Thanks this is wonderful interview series. I absolutely love the way you handle the interview Rick and so interesting to listen to all aspects from John
These podcasts are the greatest gift next to the two new phenomenal albums

I could listen to John and Rick talk all day. Love this series. What a great year for RHCP and all of us fans.
Thanks Rick and John- musical heroes of mine and same for many more.. I like many guitarists but always come back to John’s music for inspiration most of all 🙌
Thank you for the interviews Rick Rubin & Broken Record 🙏
Please have a Part 3
You can tell how comfortable he is talking to you ✌️
Could you please ask him about the project he did with Danny Carey & Kevin Cey & also working with The Mars Volta?
These are fantastic and I really want to thank everyone involved. That conversation at some point on one of these episodes between John and Rick would be amazing.
This should be a weekly/monthly podcast!
Thx so much John for sharing how you learn, practice, create and feel about music, this is priceless for guitarists and music lovers in general! ❤🎸
I have a feeling that, over time, these JF episodes will be listened to millions of times. He's so calming to listen to.
This was exactly what I needed to listen to today. Brilliant.
Amazing, thank you for this 🙏
Listening to this interview was so touching and moving that I was brought to tears. There is way more to the magic Rick brings out in people then just”letting them speak” he knows how to talk to people and listen to people and is a true guru ! And I have a new love for john and the chili peppers
This interview was so awesome. Rick Rubin and JF himself. Thank you!

Thank you, Rick! Truly a gift to hear John open up and talk at such length and to hear your own thoughts as well. These simpatico conversations about music seem to become “musical” in their own right. Can’t wait for the 3rd disk of Rubium Frusciantium….😊
Grateful to Rick. Grateful for John and who both of these guys are. It’s a whole other thing completely separate from our bizarre lives that taps into somebody else that is under this surface. So grateful for these havens

Always blown away by the sheer depth of these interviews!! How many guitarists are reflecting on the moment saying they have to balance the past, future, and present together to be playing the right notes 🌶 imagine John Frusciante teaches lessons as an instructor. He is so brilliant beyond anything I have seen. And then just when your pleased with two they say let's go for a third. What a treat!!
this is the first time ive ever heard someone describe that sort of condensed emotion visual thing john's talking about and it makes me happy that ive heard someone describe it for the first time
