- Today is the start of a month-long run of episodes in celebration of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ newest album, "Unlimited Love." We kick things off with Rick Rubin in conversation with the Chili Peppers' guitarist, John Frusciante. If you’re a diehard fan you know why the release of their new album is so exciting. "Unlimited Love" is their first record with John in 16 years.
In this episode, you’ll hear John tell Rick about his deep musical exploration as a young guitar player. He also talks about how he fell in love with the Chili Peppers as a teenager, and what it was like joining the band he’d become such a big fan of at just 18 years-old. And in the end, John and Rick are joined by a very special guest.

After all those years apart, for John to tell Anthony that he was born to be in the band legit had me in tears. He’s not wrong.
I went to Jr. Jigh and High school with John. I went to his house in Jr. High because I wanted to learn how to play "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden. When he tried to teach me the song I just sat my guitar down and watched his magic at 15 years old. I remember he loved Zappa. He also told me at that age that he would be famous one day. Boy is he ever. So happy for him.

John really is one of the greatest guitarists of all time
the term has been thrown around for so many years it feels to me it lost its meaning. But John is truly the most raw, honest, talented guitarist, probably second only to Jimi Hendrix.

Bit of a stretch but yeah, he is good and he does sorta have his own signature sound.
As a 30yo fan who had exhausted just about all the JF/RHCP content there is over the last 15 years, I can't articulate how satisfying/insightful/gripping this interview is; ironic considering how JF is directly responsible for my (somehow successful) pursuit as a professional writer.
How did he impact your writing career?
@@johnk7267 Hey, looking back to circa-2006/7 I'd take the intense emotions I felt from his music and write angsty teenage poetry endlessly; I also found his Niandra LaDes period super powerful and was drawn towards the idea of creating art at the lowest depths of self-destruction (says a lot about me haha). I then went into music journalism & social media mgmt and survived a bunch of rock bottom moments in the process. Big love to anyone else who feels eternally tethered to/grateful for this remarkable dude ✌️

As a guitarist, JF is my biggest idol. He's been through hell and back. Scar Tissue is an amazing book that I recommend to everyone. Really let me see into who he is as a person and musician. Love this guy
I feel like Flea's personality must've rubbed off the most on John, unless they're just naturally similar, but the way that they speak and describe their experiences is so similar, very humble, thoughtful, loving and empathetic dudes.

Exactly. Because he sounds exactly like Flea to me in this recording in comparison to his voice in other interviews. I was like "wait what? Isn't this Flea? What's going on?" Hahaha. I guess this is one of those things that just happens subcondiously when spending a lot of time together with someone you really adore and to a certain extend look up to.
IMO they've been speaking in a very similar fashion for a long time. If you go back and listen to their interviews during the Stadium Arcadium era it's pretty evident. John used to seem to have a lot of thoughts in his head but had trouble getting them out in a coherent manner in interviews, but now he seems to be much more relaxed. But even then, Flea and John have always had a similar cadence of speaking and introspection.
This is a thing between musicians you basically end up speaking in the same notes and key...

I've never seen John so comfortable in an "interview". And I've seen many of them.

Probably a combination of Rubin being an excellent listener/friend and John being in a much better place than he's been before. I know that we can't know for sure but it truly feels like he's finely found himself and hopefully gets to live out his life stress free making the music he wants to make and together with the rest of the band sharing that love of music so few others can.
@@sebastianfallman9876 I think he is a shy person but as we grow old we get more experience and confidence , so now he feels better to speak in public and share his opinions. During the second time he was on the band he was still recovering from his drug abuse period so maybe his appearance and voice would make him feel uncomfortable in front of cameras.
I feel like this is the first time I heard John talking freely and without pause, and from "teenager John" perspective, also enjoying himself. I loved this and can't wait for the next episodes!

An absolute goldmine for the longtime fan of the Chili Peppers and John, in all of his mystery and enigmatic ways of being. It has always been impossible to get him to casually chat about the band, the old days, and just telling stories like this in interviews. I never, ever thought I'd be privy to this kind of casual conversation with John Frusciante. It is such a treat to see him loose and just shooting the shit. I could go on and on about how cool this is, man. Thanks Rick!

I really really need someone to interview John about how he sees his solo work from the 2000’s to the the Empyrean. I still can hear him say « it feels so good to share this music with people » on the ATP live and then never play a single solo show ever again.
Yes I expected more of that in this interview and not a biopic. I don't care about doing another solo show again, it's his personal decision, but I would love to hear about his works, or himself as an artist.
And ATP Live was SO good
I remember that very well also - disappointing for all of us - but I wonder if it’s an unrealized sadness for him too. Like he doesn’t remember exactly what he’s missing until he plays out again. And so if he never plays out again he’s never as sad to not do it. If that was articulated at all clearly.
I want to put this out there. Maybe I won't get a chance to tell him this personally, in this lifetime. John you saved my life!. You can hear all the petrucci's and slash's of the world. Guitarists with impeccable techniques but I can guarantee this. No fucking guitarist on this earth, who has ever lived can touch your soul like this man does. Thank you John. I know this in my heart that you are enlightened and going to Empyrean.

Your comment is precisely why I had a negative view of John Frusciante. All this crap about him being the best guitarist on earth because you happen to like him. That, is an insanely self centred , self important point of view. Yep, Frusciante is a great guitar player, but the best ever ? I can think of a dozen in as many seconds who wipe the floor with him. Better than Hendrix ? Better than Jimmy Page ? However, listening to to this interview has made me realise it's not his fault, it's the childishness of some of his worshippers

His live sure would make a damn great movie if its threated with honesty and respect, sadly those movies tends to bastardize or idealize the arstist, never seem too relatable and usually change pivotal or crude things to not make the audience umconfortable, John has great hights But at the same Time deep lows, and then bounce back again, It would need a sensible director to do It propperly

I'm thankful for Josh and his contributions to RHCP and Dot Hacker but John being back in the band (and making guitar oriented music) is a dream come true. Already got my tickets for the world tour. :)

Ataxia - Automatic Writing, and the Brown Bunny EP are great, too. I’m sure Nifty already knows all this because Nifty likes the DC EP, so i know for sure that Nifty knows what's up. But those three records i mentioned have to be mentioned in the same breath as the other albums they named.

I loved that in one interview he described auditioning Chad Smith and that the other three tried to give him the audition from hell because they didn't think Chad would fit into the band being much taller and heavier than them. Then Chad said one of John's guitar strings broke and he changed it really quickly mid song.
John is so special but so is Rick Rubin! I just hope he knows how grateful we are to him for everything!!

I love this interview with John because it's refreshing to hear him say the things that all chili pepper fans know. I forget what point he says it but he "stopped doing what he thought great guitarists should do" and started just making music that spoke to him. To me, that is why John is probably still the most underrated guitar player in all of music. He could come in and just melt your face off, as he's done live to me about 10 times (yes, i was fully erect) and he has a bunch of times on stadium arcadia, etc, but he doesn't have to. He can put together beautifully simple tunes and melodies that aren't these overly complex speed metal guitar god patterns where you're basically saying: "look how fast i can move my fingers." He can do that too, but he doesn't have to - which is the shit.
When Anthony clarified with John if he was mad at Chad for coming late or not shaving his head - I died 🤣🤣🤣

Great interview. I was Rick's UPS delivery driver in the mid 1990's at his American Records office at 3500 Olive in Burbank California. I had already worked with the Red Hot Chili Peppers producing their live videos for Lindy Goetz, 5 years prior before delivering to Rick.(yeah I had a real job🤣) I'd see him in his office and ask his secretary, if I could have a meeting with Rick in regards to all the footage I produced being used for a video project with him and his label. My request was declined. In 1999 I decided to auction off my master video tapes of the band from 1988 thru 1992, I produced over the years past. I used ebay and asked for one million dollars for all the master tapes. My publicity stunt landed on VH1 and the L.A. Weekly.

Got a lump in my throat from Rick's description at 17:09. I saw the Chili Peppers yesterday and this was exactly what it felt like. I vividly remember this moment at the end of These Are The Ways where I was in the moshpit and made eye contact with this one dude and we just shouted the lyrics in ecstacy at each other. Nothing else existed at that moment. When they played Soul to Squeeze the pit immediately died and I couldn't help but shed a tear. Some other dudes next to me who I was bashing against just moments ago were also breaking down crying because of how beautiful this moment was. I'm so grateful to these guys for giving people these experiences that transcend beyond mundane life ♥️

I've been to many concerts in my life, lots of them, from the mid-80s onwards, but nothing compares to seeing RHCP on the Mother's Milk tour at a small venue, the experience was exactly how Frusciante describes seeing them the first time, it was an incredible energy I've only ever felt at that show, everyone in the place was joyously jumping around uncontrollably, we were one with the band and with each other just freaking out, I'm usually reserved and an observer at shows but I danced the whole time without any self-consciousness it was incredible
I met the whole band at a show in Seattle (Paramount) at the Mother's Milk tour. I still have the signed copy of the MM vinyl from that day. I was in awe of them and watching John play the guitar on stage, we were reminded just how far he was ahead in life at that point because we were exactly the same age. There he was, a 19yo who was a part of the Chili Peppers, and we were scrubs who couldn't even get a date.
he was on fire on the Mothers Milk tour. at the absolute peak of his abilities as far as talent and motivation combined

I was a junior high skater in the mid 80's. Loved my Thrasher magazine. Saw a photo of a band in the music section and and they looked like they were having a blast and dressed in fun costumes. I took up the guitar and this man has been an influence in my guitar playing my entire life along with all the other guitar greats. Blood Sugar Sex Magic is one of the best albums. So happy I have ben able to see him and the band create music through out my entire life. Thank you John. Thank you.

Outstanding....about Anthony"s same age and playing in a band in San Diego back then..going up to shows in LA at the Roxy or Perkins Palace plus a friend was attending GIT at the time ...good romp thru some old memories ...love all these guys ..

Wow my whole life has culminated to this point. Chili pepper lore and frusciante himself was so important to me for decades now. The story of healing, love, grace, and POWER in the FUNK, is my foundation. I am glad I have made it to this point. I am glad that I can know my favorite artist almost as if I was sitting there with him myself.
