This is probably the most unexpected and amazing interview with John I leaned so much that I wanted it was amazing and he seemed comfortable being interviewed by Rick
Broken Record Podcast, Please ask RHCP why they've never had a rhythm guitarist. Ask them why they can't have both Josh Klinghoffer and John Frusciante playing guitars on an album or a show.
I think John is slightly autistic , can’t drive a car , likes to do mathematics from the top of his head , He likes to rewrite chord progressions and notes that only make sense to his brain , so the other bandmates can read them , and understand what he means by them , socially he’s not that strong , getting praised is not his thing , although his speaking is improved 100% since he left in 2009 , if he left in 2009 to find out who he is , he got a lot of things worked out in his mind , fascinating guy , only 52 yo and already a living legend , hope to hear a lot more of his brilliant work in the future , Omar Rodriquez Lopez ( The Mars Volta ) Said in an interview that John got a ton of brilliant music on the shelf in his studio , that no one will ever gonna hear , that would be a loss for music lovers all over the world , most of his work is brilliant in my opinion .
I enjoy hearing Anthony and John talk to someone they know, trust, and respect. So much better than all the uncomfortable and cringy press interviews they have to give
John sounds like the smartest, most enlightened person when discussing music and creation. he's obviously spent as lot of time reflecting and getting his thoughts in order. I also really love how supportive and caring Anthony is with John. great interview
I dunno, as an artist myself sometimes I think the things he says are kind of cringe. Not terribly so or anything, but it's actually something I noticed about the Peppers in general. They seem to be constantly tiptoeing around everything they say, saying things in ways so that other people either don't get upset or think they are arrogant. This is fine, but a little confidence might be better. These guys are still my favorite band, and have been since I was about 12, but it's like they have their own accent or way of speaking that is their own, formed as a result of being in a band with other artists with feelings and what not. They're great guys, I'm sure, I'm not trying to talk shit or anything, just making an observation.
@@judahspindler6170 You're not wrong. A band is a delicate balance of ego and pride, the RHCP haven't always been great with that balance. I agree that they would probably benefit from thicker skin.

Yeah I think it’s his best melodies in a long time. I didn’t really love Stadium Arcadium from him all that much. So probably since By The Way. Unlimited Loves lyrics were mostly good but some that I didn’t love. But hey that is what makes him who he is so I’ll take it! And I actually enjoyed Poster Child. Even though it doesn’t mean anything too deep it was a fun idea. But I agree with you dude! I was super impressed with Anthony and his contributions
Love the part about Flea playing piano and John on bass. If I ever feel uninspired or like I'm going nowhere on guitar picking up a different instrument gets me out of the rut 90% of the time. Also love John mentioned Joy Division. I just told my brother yesterday about how I thought it had big Joy Division vibes but with a different twist.
Is it just me? Does Rick Rubin have a voice that is unmistakable like your own mother's voice??? Great interview. Glad to hear John and Anthony reunited.
After waiting 16 years wondering what John was thinking about his relationship with the band, this literally makes my life complete to know he's back and committed. I was convinced for so many years that he would never return.
This is one of the best interviews these guys have done. Kudos to Rick and whoever thought to do this. It's very like they're talking to family, which makes the interview that much better. Much respect.
Anthony and John’s friendship blossomed into such a beautiful and admirable thing. Witnessing them connect and love each other again makes me so damn happy. Being able to genuinely care, learn, understand, accept, and fully love another person for who they are is what true friendship requires to make it completely whole ❤️
What an interesting interview. You can tell that these guys have been in each other's lives forever. The trust they have in Rick makes for such an easy conversation. I feel like I was sitting in a chair right next to them. ;( I wish).!! Also, the new album is so " john" in its sound and style, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. May the magic continue for many years to come.
Anthony: spends 5 minutes expressing in detail how much he appreciates John and always thought of him for the last 10+ years when he had left the band. John: yeh
@@new.romance999 musically, maybe but based of this interview I got the feeling that Anthony brings a lot of what inspires John to create and specifically create for the Red Hot Chili Peppers which makes sense since Anthony is a core part of what makes them what they are as a band. I don't really know how you got to your conclusion but I feel like he was very complimentary of Anthony and especially in the creative sense.
@@new.romance999 I don't think so at all. John literally said he was "born to be in this band" and Anthony is a huge part of RHCP. I don't think he would say that if he didn't respect and appreciate all that Anthony brings to the band.
@@marsoblivi0n945 Great point, probably the reason John went to all their shows before being part of the band. Come on bro, just admit you only like them for the two of them. Many of us like all parts of the band
I'm loving hearing about the connection between John and Anthony, both personal and during the writing process. I've listened to so many RHCP interviews and I'd never heard them compliment and be appreciative of each other to this extent, especially coming from John towards Anthony.
I still can't believe I am hearing them all together again, just listening in disbelief and gratitude. and thank you for the interviews. So awesome to hear with the album.
I actually burst into tears seeing that first instagram post about it. Every fan, including myself, had given up on the thought of this ever happening. You don’t need me to tell you how I felt having my first play through of the album
The amount of information John seems to be able to library in his mind is unfathomable. Not only regarding his own memories from when he was younger, but also all those musicians, records and songs he has gone through since he was a child, the capacity to recall them all in detail is plain crazy, especially knowing how much music he devours, and add to that what his hardcore addiction may or may not did to his brain... That tells me one thing: the man has always lived in the present, aware of the very moment, IN the moment, organically, without even trying or worrying for things that are not the case. Bob Forrest said it the best: the guy is a savant musician. I would take it further: the guy is a savant human being.
For work reasons I left my country years ago and I have lived in 5 countries. In my home country I used to have a band and hearing this interview touched my heart. I miss those guys so much. You guys, Anthony and John, talking about each other with such a legit bond and friendship makes me happier than even the new album. Life is all about the journey of it and who you take to join you to walk through it. I am so glad you guys are back together again. I met the RHCP by an MTV contest years ago it was 2006, the first tour of the Red Hot with Stadium Arcadium, and when I was at backstage with them, I truly felt the love they have for each other. It's the best experience I eve had in my life. I traveled all the way from Chile to Barcelona to meet them and it was that particular moment that you can 100% call happiness. I remember John asked me my address and phone number and I never got any letter. I waited years for something. I guess he forgot but actually Adela, the MYV staff that was with us that day told me "Forget it, he will never contact you" and yeah, probably he forgot but I'll never forget him. Live prosper guys, enjoy the journey and road to your elderly days sharing with each other. I wish I could do the same with the friends I love. Love you guys
Man, the RHCP deserve a 3 hours movie. I promise it wouldn't be boring, not even for a second. Never have I ever knew of a band with so much chemistry. It's unbelievable. And beautiful.
I love this band I'm so glad that John is back I saw them in 2003 they blew my mind I have their symbol tattooed on my neck i will be going in Detroit this summer 👍
Thanks Rick. For putting yourself out there and making possible for us fans to know the band (much) beyond talk shows and interviews, and get further inspired!
"I was born to be in this band".. same way i feel I was born to listen to this band 😍 these interviews are like what the Funky Monks documentary for BSSM was.. an insight, a peek behind the curtain. Just makes me love these guys even more
Every marriage counselor should force the couples to listen to this interview during a session. Only an organic relationship will last. RHCP is a family, and they did need space as everybody does, but they were meant to always be together. Much love to the ideal family RHCP!
They do seem to be fractious though, like any good marriage! I'm not sure this will last too long, and I'd suspect ths will be the last time these four are together. We'll enjoy anyway!
This is soooo interesting to listen to, I love it. It's been said before but not only is Rubin a great producer but also a wonderful interviewer if you want to put it into terms. This is intimate and just three friends having a conversation.
Old school album promotion - the most authentic form of promotion - and it works 100% with them! Just as interesting as the Fab 4 in the 60s and it all depends on personal relationships and stories.
Lovely....personal...love the 'smaller' stories ...gives even more soul to the songs....if that's possible even. You are amazing....i'm so ffing grateful to the universe for having your paths cross, your lives intertwine so you can birth your work....sweet souls..thank you for being who you are
And I don't think Anthony expected anything else this time around, the bond they share really goes deeper than words can describe and nothing John could say would change that.
Nice listening to history and origins of music and the new songs, inspiration, creation, influences. It brought in some new light over things. Interesting conversation with Rick Rubin. He's is great listener. Thank you for opening up. John and Anthony words for each other are very sweet and respectful. I feel like they're closer than ever. Beautiful and meaningful.
Thank you for this. Unlimited love for RHCP. Their music has given so much joy to so many people, unmeasurable yet real. A privilege to listen to this conversation. 30 years later and I am still hearing, listening, feeling. Thanx again.
Wow. John sounds way more comfortable than he has in years. No uums and aahs and seems to be in a good place. The fact that Rick is doing the interview probably has something to do with it but John sounds a lot more grounded these days.
Josh deserves an immeasurable amount of gratitude for keeping the band alive and going all this time. And while the last two albums weren’t quintessential Peppers, they at least gave us a unique take on their potential as a band. Mad respect to Josh.
@@exhermit you guys talk like he did it all by himself, actually Flea did the hard work. The songs themselves show this: intense bass lines with a few guitar notes here and there.
@@leof2497 Nowhere did I insinuate Josh doing everything. I’m just acutely aware of him being the final piece holding the band together. Imagine being the replacement for John muthafuckin’ Frusciante and actually making a decent go of it? That’s what we’re all saying. Flea obviously took the lead on the last two albums and, it goes without saying, without him the band would instantly die. No replacement possible. But that’s why we don’t mention him. It goes without saying… You can appreciate one aspect of something without the need to include everything else. That doesn’t mean you’re neglecting everything unmentioned.
So interesting to hear what John is saying about his guitar influences making this album. Can definitely hear that cross between Jeff Beck and Kurt Cobain in his playing
John’s work is 1 big inspirational flow from Hendrix , Zappa , Bowie , Beefheart , Johnny Marr , Hillel , Bernhard Sumner , Wu Tang Depeche Mode etc. He always had periods of listening to certain artists or genres that inspired him to make the things he does , even with his electronic music .
Anthony's story about how he had to get to Rick's house, wow. You'd never guess that kind of effort & out of the box thinking would be involved just in the writing of lyrics & recording of vocals. So cool.
You can easily draw a thread through John, Gilmour and Freddie King. Hearing Gilmour sounds on this new album. Gilmour obviously influenced by American blues, but you don't hear it as obviously with Pink Floyd music. I hear Freddie King as a funky Gilmour, and Gilmour as Freddie King - tripping on acid.. knowing that, it's really interesting to hear John talk about his own style and influences. Connecting all sorts of new dots, even this late into being a fan. Always something new.
My man seems like 20% sharper and I just really really love the new album, I was scared a bit like them maybe the magic is gone etc. but I just really really love these new jams so glad he’s back
So…can you please upload part 3 and 4 next where John and Anthony go into the rest of the songs on the album like Whatchu Thinkin. Seriously don’t want this discussion to end!!! Thanks for sharing Rick!
These first two episodes with the Chili peppers have been amazing! Thank you for providing the platform for fans to connect and hear so much insight into the band!
These are such great interviews! From my perspective as a drummer, who's moreso a "frustrated songwriter/guitarist," the behind the scenes insight, from John especially, is really great. It's such a natural conversation, and honestly it's super exciting and helpful to hear them sober. Really excited to hear the rest of these!
The fact that this interview ends with that last question and Anthony sharing his experiences and then discovering that Anthony and John are fans of those specific bands mentioned was the cherry on top.
I'd love to here them go over which songs in their catalog are "John songs" and which ones are " Flea songs", I feel like I have a general sense, but yeah. Iove the band, love the new album, and I can't wait for the next episode!
Round the 22nd minute mark, Anthony is so eloquently laying out the process of what happened, so precisely describing his perspective and feelings....that's so beautiful and mature and wise and loving...followed by John's goofy 'yeah yeah'. Priceless.
It's great that John's back in the band, the new album is incredible and they sound like they used to. But man....I feel so bad for Josh not knowing any of this stuff was happening.
They sound like they're in love with John. They really like Josh, but John is the love of their life, they have so many experiences attached to him. My take is at least.

@@th3gr81 i never had anthony pegged for a consistently good lyricist where he has whole bars in multiple songs where he just goes ding dong diggy dong dinding dong ding dang lmao
@@th3gr81 yeah, what Vitor said haha. Dong ding dang Bing dong Bing dang hahaha. I dunno, I like super abstract lyrics, but I can see how someone who doesn't would be thrown off by the new album?
So, completely, thankful that it’s RR who’s doing these interviews. Utterly thankful for these times when we receive insight like this as well
Anthony and John’s friendship blossomed into such a beautiful and admirable thing. Witnessing them connect and love each other again makes me so damn happy. Being able to genuinely care, learn, understand, accept, and fully love another person for who they are is what true friendship requires to make it completely whole ❤️
I could listen to John talk for weeks
So happy John's back, great conversation.
John: yeh
yeah I think that John is more into playing with that Flea and Chad and would avoid Anthony if he could
@@new.romance999 musically, maybe but based of this interview I got the feeling that Anthony brings a lot of what inspires John to create and specifically create for the Red Hot Chili Peppers which makes sense since Anthony is a core part of what makes them what they are as a band.
Flea and John are the only reason or talent behind that band.
Yeah I would hazard a guess that he may have some autistic spectrum traits. I certainly feel a huge neurodivergent connection with him.
Wow love that
Maybe he has diaries, it helps you to remember
@@meloderieugif2294 It is a possibility.
Cool story bro. Fk it, that's how it goes, at least you had a great experience.
Man, the RHCP deserve a 3 hours movie. I promise it wouldn't be boring, not even for a second. Never have I ever knew of a band with so much chemistry. It's unbelievable. And beautiful.
Only 3 hours? 😆
They need a TV Series
They’re like the Beatles but better
I love this band I'm so glad that John is back I saw them in 2003 they blew my mind I have their symbol tattooed on my neck i will be going in Detroit this summer 👍
This series of interviews has made me fall in love with RHCP. What a great group of guys.
The album is such a gift
These two interviews could be combined into one audiobook, and it will undoubtedly become a bestseller.
Thanks Rick. For putting yourself out there and making possible for us fans to know the band (much) beyond talk shows and interviews, and get further inspired!
Haha gotta love Ricks enthusiasm on this episode.. he’s practically shouting out of excitement and it’s awesome
Everyone saying I love you at the end just made my heart swell.
I enjoy how passionate they are about writing.
Old school album promotion - the most authentic form of promotion - and it works 100% with them! Just as interesting as the Fab 4 in the 60s and it all depends on personal relationships and stories.
As a big fan of this band I really needed to hear this so thank you Broken Record🙏 I’m at peace now,
man we need the video of this
Lovely....personal...love the 'smaller' stories ...gives even more soul to the songs....if that's possible even. You are amazing....i'm so ffing grateful to the universe for having your paths cross, your lives intertwine so you can birth your work....sweet souls..thank you for being who you are
I can listen to them talk all day
Listening to these guys talk is a beautiful human experience 😊 Bless them
These guys are part of my life since 1990. I feel connected to them as if they were my real life friends
These interviews are gold! Really glad they're back with Rick Rubin too. ❤
John really doesn't know how talanted he is. Maybe he does but he is so humble x
AK pouring his soul about his connection to John: John whenever we were apart I never forgot you
John: yeah…
And I don't think Anthony expected anything else this time around, the bond they share really goes deeper than words can describe and nothing John could say would change that.
Nice listening to history and origins of music and the new songs, inspiration, creation, influences. It brought in some new light over things. Interesting conversation with Rick Rubin. He's is great listener. Thank you for opening up. John and Anthony words for each other are very sweet and respectful. I feel like they're closer than ever. Beautiful and meaningful.
OMG, this interview is amazing!!!!!!!!!!
He sounded the same on Howard Stern. It’s like he has a newfound peace and confidence.
John is definitely comfortable speaking with Rick because in the past he would always say u know. You know!
Just Beautiful Rick, Thank You for sharing this with all of us.
Loved this episode Rick!
As much as I love John,Josh did great and I'm somehow sad to see him go. Best of luck to him 💙
Josh deserves an immeasurable amount of gratitude for keeping the band alive and going all this time. And while the last two albums weren’t quintessential Peppers, they at least gave us a unique take on their potential as a band.
Mad respect to Josh.
I love the Josh material as much as any rhcp stuff. Especially all the b-sides from I’m With You. So grateful for those gems.
It goes without saying…
You can appreciate one aspect of something without the need to include everything else. That doesn’t mean you’re neglecting everything unmentioned.
I wonder if they ever considered just having both guitarists in the band together?
What a fantastic series of interviews this was. We couldn't have asked for these guys to be interviewed by anyone better than Rick Rubin.
I've been enjoying the hell out of this coverage - the album's really growing on me too - thanks guys!!
These guys are great because they are all in tune to each other. They respect, and know what they each do to create the music!! 🎉
So interesting to hear what John is saying about his guitar influences making this album. Can definitely hear that cross between Jeff Beck and Kurt Cobain in his playing
I always heard a bit of Roxy Music and King Crimson in his playing.
I remember he didnt like nirvana in the 90s but it's interesting how he appreciated kurt layer on in life
He doesn't try to replicate though, does he? They're just an influence on his outlook.
So cool.
It’s so great to hear perspectives like these. Thanks for this series, and great new record!
Oh hey, nice seeing you here! 😁 Love the new record as well
No doubt!!
I could listen to this all day, everyday
You can easily draw a thread through John, Gilmour and Freddie King. Hearing Gilmour sounds on this new album. Gilmour obviously influenced by American blues, but you don't hear it as obviously with Pink Floyd music. I hear Freddie King as a funky Gilmour, and Gilmour as Freddie King - tripping on acid.. knowing that, it's really interesting to hear John talk about his own style and influences. Connecting all sorts of new dots, even this late into being a fan. Always something new.
My man seems like 20% sharper and I just really really love the new album, I was scared a bit like them maybe the magic is gone etc. but I just really really love these new jams so glad he’s back
I was almost crying listening to Rick and John talking about John coming back and saying he was made for this band
So…can you please upload part 3 and 4 next where John and Anthony go into the rest of the songs on the album like Whatchu Thinkin. Seriously don’t want this discussion to end!!! Thanks for sharing Rick!
9:00 This time? ( raising the voice )😂😂😂 love you John❤️🤎🖤
I love that episode! It was so wonderful to hear those stories and history and memories ❤
Love this so much! Thanks for sharing
John praises Cobain's guitar playing, it just doesn't get any better!
Priceless.
Such a natural conversation!!! Thankyou 😊
This is wholesome.
I just hope they gave Josh a big payoff
@@TheStarBlack Josh seems to be happier than ever playing with Pearl Jam who he evidence loves more than any other band
He had a good run. Too bad, so sad.
