John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers Returns, Part 4 | Broken Record (Hosted by Rick Rubin)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 гру 2022
- Today we have part four of our John Frusciante Returns series. This is the latest installment of Rick Rubin’s on-going series of in-depth interviews with the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist. And if this is the first interview you’re hearing, make sure to go back and check out the first three parts.
On this episode we’ll hear John Frusciante play through more of his guitar parts, and he’ll explain how he came up with some of the best guitar melodies in modern rock history. John also talks about how playing along to classic heavy metal albums from Black Sabbath and Van Halen, as well as dancing all night at drum and bass clubs helped shape his style on the 2002 album, By The Way. He also explains how listening to Brandy, Destiny’s Child and Wu-Tang Clan helped influence his playing on Stadium Arcadium.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Can you just keep doing these conversations with John please and thank you! Like never stop! 😁
Thank you all so much for these interviews with John. He is such a fascinating person, and the more you hear about his wealth of musical influences, the more you realize that RHCP’s successes over so many years are no accident. Such a great band of passionate and skilled artists.
How about an ongoing (monthly?) podcast, where Rick and John just discuss music for 2 hours, in a completely free-form way? That would make me so happy!!!
@@lindacarol122 That would be awesome! Two legends and thoughtful minds just talking about music topics, wherever they lead.
@@400_billion_suns right?
Rick, please continue your conversations with John. How about a podcast when John's 2 new solo records release February 3! You could ask John about his amazing solo career (6 albums in 6 months in 2004)!!
I thought of this as well. I'd love to hear him discuss his solo records and the Ataxia records. Xmas came early.
Yes also curious in learning more about his solo records! The Empyrean and Smile from the Streets are my favs. He did a teaser of two songs from Niandra in the previous episode and that was exciting.
I would love to hear more about that period around 2004-06 where he released 6 solo albums, released BTW, then SA, plus recorded Ataxia, AND recorded most of the guitar parts on The Mars Volta's Amputechture album (and features in the incredible Frances the Mute). What a legendary run in that time period...
man I would love to hear his self reflect on 6in6
Yes Rick please! These are so much fun and historic!!! People will be listening to these in 100 years!
"Sorry I'm not really warmed up right now so if it sounds bad I'm sorry" *proceeds to play the bridge part in Venice queen perfectly*
52:59 I felt that when John played Dying song he FELT something there... He got DEEP into for a second! I feel that a dense vibe was there for a moment!
That Scar Tissue anecdote at 25:00 is one of the funniest delayed realizations ever. I watched that video thinking, wow John is such a technical genius messing with an individual string’s tuning but it just so happened to be an accident.
YES HAHAHA didnt expect that at all
Boring heroin guy...
I figured that dude who made the video was trying too hard to make content. Glad to know John was just outta tune.
@@blakegale871 it was Paul David’s and he’s actually a very good watch if you like guitar.
@@blakegale871 - Guys like Paul Davids are vital in helping articulate happy ‘accidents’ or why certain things that should be wrong but sound ‘right’ .. he was also one of the OG’s when it comes that style of content.
I don’t know how many parts there are, but don’t stop! Keep this going forever!
And ever and ever and ever and ever........forever!!!
Dude yes!!! Never stop these
Had such a shitty day and now I'm listening to this with the biggest smile on my face. The power of John Frusciante ❤️
The cocaine rubs off of him.
That Venice Queen story blew my mind away
The last four or five minutes where they talk about life is some of the most beautiful things I’ve heard. Beautiful humans.
john playing venice queen in 2022 made 10 years of waiting worth while!!!!
Some highlights:
2:00 - The Shadows & Cliff Richard (one for my grandmother here in Scotland)
3:55 - Brandy and Destiny's Child X Hendrix inspired writing
6:45 - Venice Queen
24:40 - Superb insight on Scar Tissue - non-intentional wrong tuning
35:20 - The making of Bella
45:00 - Roulette influenced by Genesis... and Prog Rock. Good to have it confirmed that I thought this album was influenced by King Crimson and them.
47:40 - Genesis, Turn It On.... Turn it on, turn it on again
52:50 - Dying Song
** DYING SONG LIVE : ua-cam.com/video/kxeTAvmyxbg/v-deo.html **
1:03:55 - Nerve Flip
1:11:20 - Sixth Sense
All this talk of By The Way album - can we all take a minute to appreciate Midnight: ua-cam.com/video/4QhFuJWqTAc/v-deo.html
Oh hell, he talks about Dying Song on here? That song kills me. I listened to it on repeat after my dad died last year. Damn it's an emotional song. ❤️
so glad he talks about Dying Song cause thats one of his best songs, i like how Rick asks the right questions cause he’s a fan!
A very boring album.
@creamydistortion its cool if you don't like the Album, move along, yiu not being cool critiquing here...
I have goosebumps whenever he is playing some acoustic parts during these interviews
I'm impressed by how well he can remember things he wrote 15-20 years ago and probably hasn't rehearsed much in the last decade, especially when you consider how many new songs he's written since. His memory for specific details in general (not just how to play these songs) is remarkable.
It's all from the cocaine.
Yea man the venice queen part 😅
I was so inexplicably into Venice Queen the last couple months, learning it to the best of my ability. Felt like pure synchronicity hearing him bring it up and explain it’s roots in D&B, one of my other favourite genres
These really are a treat. After years of digging through UA-cam for John interviews, it's amazing to have all these conversions coming out now that he's returned. An absolute dream come true, really.
What a cokehead...
@@creamydistortion u so ignorant, hope some day you will understand Jonh
Exactly
Can't wait for the next Frusciante Podcast
I wish we could have these every week forever
We do :)
As long as they have cocaine, they'll keep talking...
No question we are witnessing the very best version of John now. He is so much more serene and happy now than in his earlier incarnations.
I think he's been like this since californication. You can find a wonderful interview video from maybe 2007 or so, I believe its called "the heart is a drum machine". where he just talks about philosophy and his peaceful approach to the world and how he likes breathing and enjoying trees. So yeah him being calm and peaceful he's been like for almost 20 years now
This whole series is like the final prize for waiting for John to return holy shit
An episode taking about John's solo discography would be reeeealy amazing!!
My favorite interview by Rubin so far. Frusciante is a Swiss army knife of musicianship.
This is such a great idea, mostly for music lovers and John Frusciante fans, but also for John himself. On a historical level he's one of the best musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries and deserves to be documented and understood like this. On a personal level, I'm glad that he can do a real interview about actual music and other stuff that's important to him, with an interviewer who cares about him and is respectful and doesn't exploit him.
Rick Rubin is a gem. He’s been involved with so many of my favorite artists. From a 13 year old Beastie Boys fanatic until today - an avid Chili Peppers fan
Carry me Home is probably one of the greatest rock songs written in the 21st century, absolutely amazing
lmao settle down
LOOOOL😂
ok now.... I think you have some fanboyi-ish nostalgia kicking in there mate 🤣
Better than any RHCP song post 2000, better than every Radiohead song post 2000? Better than every Tool song post 2000? Every System of a Down song post 20000?
"Life is so good" I'm so emotional
Few things in life make me happier than listening to John talk and play. Maybe my girlfriend's laughter or seeing my nephew playing. I mean it.
I wouldn't go outside...
@@KelloggsCornflakelol
I’ve been enjoying these talks soooo much! Both John and Rick are two of my very favorite folks in music.
Same, it was definitely fate that the two of them crossed paths this go round.
U gotta give chad smith more credit for being auch a great drummer. Super awesome he was always up to practice with john. Shows how patient he is with john coming back into the group.
I like the Kiedis vocal appreciation. I agree his voice is vulnerable, soulful/powerful and very unique. Love hearing how the music gets made. What John said at the end makes you think about life 💭
This made me cry from the beauty of it. This is profound.
Wow I would pay a lot of money to see this sound check where Flea and John switched instruments!!
"It's just a minor thing" -- Love these so much!!
25:00 I believe Paul Davids got a mention there :)
I thought about that straight away. He’s channel is great and I am not even a musician. What honour to be mentioned by those two giants of the music.
14:12 “It’s magical to have things that you can do, that you’re not throwing on the surface for people to see.” This is one the reasons why RHCP has managed to stay fresh and relevant for decades. John’s a musical encyclopedia and his tastes are so broad. All of that is coming together in some subtle way in his songwriting and playing.
How are these still so interesting? I thought they would run out of ideas to talk about. I’m captivated ❤
It’s John Anthony Michael Frusciante
@@421bb4 Michael?????
John was playing a bit of the Rain Song. My favorite from Zeppelin
John has a weird talent of being able to explain how (playing) music makes you feel. A certain rhythm, song, chord, note.. He can put it into words also, not only being able to play it. Thank you mr. Rubin for doing these!
Clicked on this so fast 😫 I could listen to John talk to Rick forever!
I had a few things to take care of first, but all I could think was I just want to listen to the episode - it was driving me crazy!
This is most amazing to me because I always thought John was the quiet Chili Pepper- 5 episodes now. Wow!
Rick, these are amazing. PLEASE, if John is down and you are too... don't skip stadium arcadium deep dive. Not just track by track but where that album came from and touching on the guitar achievement it is
I love this series
This interview series is the gift that keeps on giving 🎁
Thank you so much for these four parts! Such a beautiful talk between two friends about music.
This was the best episode of all. Thank you for this Rick. I got emotional at the ending!
amazing!! Keep them coming please!
Thank youuu these are so freaking amazing!!!
I cant have enough of this! Its so interesting to listen
So good, looking forward to the next one!
this has been such a great series. thanks so much for sharing! two endlessly interesting musical minds.
Can we do this every week? Love these podcasts with the two of you! Thanks to make it happen!
I've listened to all these and I could definitely listen to many more conversations between John and Rick
Been hoping to hear more about the By the way album... SUCH an amaaaaaazing album!!
So much going on in all the harmonies and overdubs and effects and stuff.
So many layers of different sounds with different textures.
Love these conversations so much ❤️🙌 keep them coming!!! Would love to hear you guys talk about the early 2000s solo records
Please keep going and include the solo records! These interviews are beyond!
So glad Rick and John are making these. Much respect to you both!
This series with John is such a beautiful gift and I can’t thank everyone involved enough for sharing it with us❤. Y’all are incredible, and I am beyond appreciative🙏. I’ve always valued Frusciante’s insight and perspective so highly, so please know that there’s absolutely a want and a gratitude for as many of these as y’all are willing to put out! Rick’s naturally a very thoughtful and generous interviewer, so combining that with a preexisting relationship that stretches back decades at this point is just🤌 chefs kiss, beautiful work!
This is just a blessing, thank you
Rick, thank you so much for bringing John. I really really appreciate it.
More of these episodes will be very welcome! Love it!
These are the best interviews that I've listen
I feel so grateful to hear this convo
Love this series of interviews with John.. wouldn't mind more episodes with him.
✨ I’m loving every minute of these interviews ❤
Wasn't expecting part 4 so soon but I'l happily take it. These have been some of the most enjoyable interviews I've heard with John and it's no doubt down to the comfortable relationship he has with Rick and the history they've shared working together since Blood Sugar. The average interviews must really start to grate on someone line John after a long tour and getting asked the same things over and over, whereas you can tell John is actually interested in the conversation with Rick. Hoping for more after John releases his next solo work.
So many top moments, but hearing these guys, 2 dear friends, just openly appreciating each other at the end is really touching
Thank you Rick and John for kindly allowed us to be part of this amazing conversation. I will keep thoose words for me for the rest of my life.
Love John, love Rick. Really hope this continues. Thanks both of you
I have absolutely loved these conversations with Rick Rubin and John Frusciante. This series of podcasts are some of my favourites, ever! Thank you for this gift 🙏🙏
The most insightful frusciante interviews ever.
Keep going on his solo stuff
Listening to their conversations is a great pleasure, it's like an opportunity to find out for yourself how something as beautiful as RHCP music is made. This is a real treasure.
so greatful for this podcast
Rick really seems to bring John out of his shell which is great. Never heard him so articulate and go into so much detail. All 4 of these videos have been fascinating. I'd honestly love to hear these two talk more. Words can't express my love for John so thank you for this Rick!
Did you catch the episode before the series of four where John is promoting "Unlimited Love"? That one was great, too. He's so candid. ua-cam.com/video/QXjaP53eOco/v-deo.html
This whole series is a gift!
I can't explain how good I felt in that ending, thank you so much
I absolutely love the way Rick talks to people, it brings out so many interesting stories and tidbits, and the conversation really flows so well
I have absolutely loved these conversations between Rick Rubin and John Frusciante. This series are some of my favourites, ever! Thank you for this gift 🙏🙏
we need to get flea and john and talk do talk about their processes together that would be so fun
I love hear John's process of creativity is so good and hear him talking about music, his life and stuff is so much fun I can't describe the feeling but it's so good listen to John talking about everything! Such a legend ❤️
These interviews are really a gift... In some years we will return to them.
this needs to be a weekly thing forever
Thank you! 🎁 Excited for the next Frusciante podcast 😅🤟
This is a perfect conversation because of John’s detail into why he does what he does and Ricks understanding of John’s ability and trying to make it measurable for the audience.
This makes me go even deeper. I love this 😊🙏💜 I'm tuning in the time you guys have a conversation 😊 thank you both, John Frusciante & Rick Rubin 😊🙏✌️
Love the talks with John… if I had my way you two would have a discussion monthly FOREVER. He’s fascinating.
Thank you for coming back John
So excited this is out! We just had one last week and are getting spoiled. I’ve been listening to the chili’s cover from I get around on repeat lately. Love johns vocals and guitar on that. And Anthony’s “YYEeAaHH” is so fitting. Great chemistry on that one. And an old purple stain version with a cool sound. I listened to I get around by The Beach Boys and it’s great, but I’m not listening to it on repeat like I am with the chili’s version
Please we need part 5 😩😫
I loved the ending. A lot of humility and gratefulness.
These interviews are truly a gift, so much worthwhile stuff to learn about how he views music and making these albums, and just hearing him talk about other subjects too, he's just so great ❤
I’ve been enjoying these conversations as much as I have enjoyed the new albums!!
I could listen to these two for days......they really connect, Rick Rubin is the Conductor and Inspirer to the wonderful talent of John......thank you all.....
Absolutely MAGICAL - keep going please....
Keep ‘em coming! Loving hearing about John’s creative process
Please more of John! We need and want more of this kind of Interviews with him.
Rick, please keep doing more and more interviews with John Frusciante :-)
Listening to Rick and John talk teaches you so much about music. 👍
Amazing interviews with John. Please have more with him but add video!
these are awesome. much gratitude for rick and john and their generosity of recording their untangling of the creative process. Not to sound greedy, but Rick & John's Music Mindedness would make for such an enlightening and inspirational regular/semi-regular podcast.
Part five let’s go!!
MORE, Rick! Please!
So grateful that John kept his separate music exploration. My heart would explode in another dimension if 'the will to death' wouldn’t have existed.
Very boring heroin albums...
"Hey Broken Record Podcast, just wanted to drop a line and say that I absolutely loved the episode featuring John Frusciante. His insight and passion for music was truly inspiring and left me wanting more. I've been checking your page almost every day, hoping for another episode with him because it's just that good. Please consider having him back on, his knowledge and creativity are a gift to all of us music lovers out there. Keep up the great work!"
The best talk with John i ever watch.
Thank you ❤
Man, the last part is about the best things I've heard him say. So good.
