Good catch on the punk influence. One thing a lot of people coming into metal don't always catch is just that. Metal got a lot of its aggression(specifically around the thrash era) from the influence of Punk and Hardcore punk. A death long form would be great, would be intersting to hear you react to a track from each of their albums as they grew more and more progressive as they went on, and they never put out a bad album. Also have to throw in my usual request for more Dillinger escape plan, hopefully a long form ;p keep up with the awesome content!

Their catalog is such an amazing body of work. Each album has an evolution in sound, musicianship and production. Death was essentially driven by one man, who developed 4 unique sounds in a 20-year span...
    1st 1983-1990 - the pioneering, thrashy gore-era (3 records) (plus many demos)
    2nd 1991-1993 - the increasingly technically-progressive era (2 records)
    3rd 1995-1998 - the melodic-progressive era (2 records)
4th 1998-2001 - the full-on power metal (NOT DEATH METAL) era (in the Control Denied project) (1 record)
An incredible output in such a short time from Chuck Schuldiner. Digging into the rich catalogue for a quick periodic dip is totally worth it here.

I love the guttural scream Chuck lets loose at 8 minutes. It strikes me as a slight stylistic nod to Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost.
Now that I’m thinking about it there seem to be a number of similarities between the feel of this song and Celtic Frost’s “Into the Crypt of Rays”.

Fantastic breakdown! I love to learn more about the recording processes in the 80s, and the organic flow of music. I like a lot of electronic music but there are days where I need to hear that raw humanity through some black metal chugs and screams, or a somber melodic death song. It's something in music that will always be desired!

Hi Geebz, thank you for your dissection and thoughts on the band Death and Chuck Schuldiner. Your awesome breakdown is just the beginning of this incredible band and you're right about it being very raw and punkish. Chuck and his band continued to develop & evolve into an incredible force of melodic & progressive death metal beauty that is so revered and respected by fans & musicians alike. Kudos to you for recognizing this from music very early in their musical journey. I would love to hear more. Thank you so much. RIP Chuck.🤘💯🎸

What a great reaction Geebz. You have to look at their last 2 albums, Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance. Chuck's voice evolves into a banshee-like scream that is haunting. And the pictures painted by the band's music and Chuck's lyrics became so large and thematic. The music also became much more progressive and had so many spine-tingling moments.

Before Death became Death they were Mantas (83-84). Kam Lee was on main vocals and drums and is one of the originators of the growl (inspired by Tom G. Warrior from Hellhammer). His growl is crazy. Rick Rozz and Charles "Evil Chuck" Shuldiner were on guitars, Chuck on additional vocals. They had a basist for a short while. From Mantas came Death and Massacre, another influential death metal band. Oh, by the way, what you're hearing is Shuldiner on vocals, Lee was the vocalist in Massacre.

Death is my favorite metal band because they ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS got better. Chuck genuinely cared about making better music and was so humble about it the whole time. It was so crucial for me becoming the musician I'm now. I honestly can't stress enough how crazy it is to hear this then go to a song like A Moment of Clarity, Flesh and The Power it Holds. And then there is all of Control Denied.

Yes, this 2014 reissue is a full blown remaster as well. It was a part of the entire catalog getting remastered in reverse order of release under the record label, Relapse Records, except for their 1995 album "Symbolic" because it was a Roadrunner Records release, and they never released the rights to it to the widow of Chuck. The funny thing is that Century Media put out a set of "remasters" in 2008, but honestly, they weren't much different than the original recordings. However the Relapse Remasters, which started in 2011, and ran thru 2016, were PROPER remasters in that they really went in and cleaned up the sound, got rid of the muddiness that was prevalent in the first three albums, and issued bonus discs for all albums. So they were considered Deluxe Releases. The bonus discs contained live versions, demo versions, instrumental versions, and rehearsals versions. These remasters are the best these albums have ever sounded.

Including the agression, punch, hardness and rawness of the punk rock in metal was what started the evolution of the extreme metal, starting with Motörhead and Venom in the late 70's-early 80's. Thrash metal, Black metal and Death metal all came out of it.

With how Geebz gushes over the "analogue" and "organic" sound of this, as well as how he seems to enjoy when you can tell how the musicians didn't have todays technology to sound perfect, I'd really love to see how he'd react to some old Kreator, with Ventor on drums. Songs like Tormentor, Total Death, Endless Pain, or Flag of Hate. I think he'd have a blast with it.
And yes, Death was the greatest band ever, and he should definitely go through all of it - if not on the channel then at least at his own leisure.
