I knew Chuck personally and recorded 2 albums with Richard. There are no drum samples used on this album. It was fully recorded with an acoustic drum set and Richard recorded the entire album in a day or 2. He is one of the best drummers I’ve ever seen and played with and the work he puts into his playing is unmatched!

Thanks early and if you still talk with them, tell both of them that i would love to think and play the way they do which i know is hard for now i just wanna take other directions in a matter of drumming... "The vocals to me seem like another guitar, another instrument". I love how even though you're not really into metal you immediately understood the point of harsh vocals in metal.
I was so glad I got to see the first run of Death To All gigs with the multiple all-star lineups (Gene and Sean on drums, Steve and Scott on bass, and Paul, Bobby, and Shannon on guitar).
Same here. I was only 12 when Chuck passed and was barely getting into metal/hardcore. It wasn't till about 10 years later that I really began to appreciate Death. Now they will always be my favorite death metal band.
Sound of Perseverance was my first touch with Death, and progressive extreme metal on that part! It was more or less my gateway drug to start listening progressive rock!
"My palate has changed" These are common words for people who are getting into the more extreme side of metal and then discover Death. For this very reason it's one of the first few bands I recommend to people. The melodies, catchy riffs and the elite level of drumming gets their attention and the vocals (usually the biggest hurdles) are harsh but still clear enough that you can understand him. In the genre of metal, Death are as close as it comes to a perfect band.
Im in this same phase of my metal journey, I just discovered death and it’s the best thing I’ve ever heard. I recently crossed over from my Black Sabbath era into my Death/Slayer era 😂
I couldn't agree more with this sentiment. I personally view Death as "the" band. They just sound so pure I haven't found a heavy metal band that I respect and enjoy more. System of a Down is up there too but they are in a different space to me.
Pretty crazy to think he was one of the contributors to the Howard stern show back in the day. The video of him playing drums for Howard is pretty comical
For people who liked Christy: he's currently in a band with Steve Digiorgio (bass player on Death's albums Human and Individual Thought Patterns) and Tim Ripper Owens (the guy who sang in Judas Priest after Rob Halford left the band for a while) called Charred Walls of the Damned. Really good stuff
You really should give a listen to the entire album, in order. It’s like a whole journey to me, like some one (probably Chuck himself) went on a pilgrimage and fought his innermost demons and now is actually teaching us how to overcome the challenges they did. Music greatness right there.

So much of the dynamics are from Richard on this album. He’s a monster drummer and musician.

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys in a small bar in Detroit for the album before this one with Christy. What a show. I will always remember and cherish that experience. I was so close to chuck I could reach out and touch him. Christy was a powerhouse, had the whole stage shaking.
Just watching your face throughout the song is such a joy! Thank you for doing this song. Death deserves all the praise, no matter if it's Sean, Gene or Richard playing the drums!
I believe this was suppose to have been the first Control Denied album (Chuck's band he had. They put out their only album just before he passed). Chuck wanted to do other styles of music by this time. I believe he wanted a clean singer on this album. I think recording contracts and business stuff lead to Chuck doing the vocals (in a higher voice than he did on any other Death albums) and putting out as a Death album. He originally wanted to work with Warrel Dane of Nevermore/Sanctuary for the Control Denied band. That would have been epic.
This album is one of my favorite metal drum recordings ever. You nailed it, it's so organic. And no one plays like Richard Christy did on this album. Really inventive drumming throughout.
I saw Death three times at the end of the ninety’s. Richard Christie is an absolute amazing drummer. My favourite drum pattern was the crazy part in Spirit Crusher which I couldn’t figure out how to play it. I can tell you, he nailed it completely on stage. Even the other drum styles of Gene “the atomic clock” Hoglan and the absolute brilliant Sean Reinert. I still love and listen to Deaths master pieces. 🤘
Hey Andrew. Chuck founded Death to create exactly what was going on in his head. He was a perfectionist! The lineup was always evolving but it worked perfectly for this band. A lot of legendary musicians came out of this band. Death was the creation of Technical Death Metal IMO. They set the bar for everyone that came after. If I remember right this was recorded at Morrisound Studios in Florida. Chuck wanted the recordings to sound like what he could play live so very little digital going on here if any. Great reaction.
This is the gold standard of drumming in metal in my opinion. it is so different, jazzy, raw real drum records and just insane to say the least. Richard is an amazing drummer and i've never heard anyone like him besides gene hoglan.
That concept of the Black Sabbath influence where you come to a full halt on a section in a song and start up a totally new thing is even massively more true for their song Spirit Crusher, lmao.
Gene actually does a pretty darned good job nowadays when he plays Richard's stuff with Death to All with Bobby Koeble and Steve DiGiorgio. I'm convinced Hoglan can play just about anything, except maybe the absolute fastest Kollias-speed double bass.
Richard still plays for Charred Walls of Jerrico which is a must go to just because of how freaking talented Ripper Owens is on vocals (He sings on that band as well) but if you really want to see imho peak Richard Christy you should hear his lesser now *other* Death Metal project called Burning Inside that's where he basically takes everything he was doing on Death and Control Denied to an even more impressive degree.
I am not a drummer, but even if I was and I had the skill to play a song like this the whole way through, I'd probably have a jammer about 2 minutes in. The stamina required to play a set of songs like this live is unbelievable.
Fantastic Band.. Chuck was Gold playing guitar and screaming in unison.. so much dynamic composition and interesting drumming.. ahead of its time this band.. captivating!
I remember when Richard used to leave the funniest voicemails on the Stern Show! They were so funny Howard would eventually end up hiring Richard fulltime, dude is hilarious! His parents were awesome!
I'd be interested to hear you compare and contrast the different approaches each of the Death drummers took to similar musical ideas. I'd also REALLY love to see what you think of Dirk Verburen's work with Soilwork, say on a slower song like "Epitome" and on uptempo songs as well (he's now in Megadeth).
I really wish more channels would check out Control Denied (Chuck's side project), The Fragile Art Of Existence is an epic album!! My favorite song is a tie between "Expect The Unexpected" and "Breaking The Broken", it sucks that Chuck passed away so early in life because he was putting out his best music he's ever written at the time. RIP Chuck Schuldiner, the man was a musical genius and a good decent man.
The funny thing about that album is, Tim Aymar is a far superior vocalist to Chuck, but it just doesn't seem to fit. His voice is just not gritty enough for the material.
@@blppt Warrel Dane was originally supposed to sing, but unfortunately that didn't happen so they got Tim (RIP). He did a great job but I would've loved to hear what Warrel would have done.
Andrew richard was always an under the radar drummer with bad luck one of the hardest hitters ,no triggers, and a practice regiment beyond comprehension to most death died control denied died he was in afew different good american bands iced earth also but just never got his break if you want to see him in action check out charred walls of the damned his solo project he wrote most material and lyrics he has good footage of tracks and studio takes filmed
Man, you can't go wrong with Death. They're actually a fantastic band for people who don't normally go that heavy as their arrangements don't get buried under noise and are much easier to pick out as opposed to something like Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation. I'd definitely recommend spending some time with all their albums, but specifically Human and onwards. There's just so much good stuff in there, especially for musicians.
One of my favourite metal songs. It also sounds like the drums/all basic tracks were recorded in one go - I wouldn't like to coordinate those stops before each verse after the fact! Andrew, have you checked out the album demos?
I love how you can feel the small variations in tempo and "mistakes" like coming in too early or too late. It's raw greatness that add so much character and humanity to the songs.
From Missouri, USA. I have met Richard. Wasn’t friends or anything but he played this area early on with a band called Public Assassin that had a raging scene here in Springfield in the early 90s. I went on to play with guys he had played with but I’ve heard a few stories. Love that whole album. Awesome on every instrument and composition.
I like to point out that Richard Christy also played with Chuck on his side project Control Denied. Another band you should try out. It has clean vocals as well.

Chuck is the stuff legends are made of. He was hella modest too, which just ads to how likeable he actually was. Died way too soon, and is forever loved and missed. But if we are talking drums I mean, this albums chops are so tight, its undeniable. I love how it seems almost off the rails at some points but always is locked right in.
I really like the drums on this album because it's not just following the meter. In songs like scavenger especially you can hear these "accelerations" that really boost up the dynamics of the songs.
Death were on another level compared to their extreme metal peers at the time. Their singer/guitarist, and founder Chuck Schuldiner was an absolute musical genius. He had a knack of finding EXTREMELY talented musicians to work with him too. Richard Christy was no exception. While it was his only album with Death, he left a very memorable impression for some insane work. Incredible drummer. Incredible band.
Awesome video. Death is such a fun rabbit hole because every album is like it came from a different band with Chuck Shuldiner at the helm. His style changed so much over the years, starting with old-school gore-and-horror thrash metal and ending with this album.
Hello from Brazil!!! Death was an extremely competent band with many different musical faces. From Death Metal to Progressive Metal. The relationship with Black Sabbath is correct, as they are the fathers of obscurity in metal riffs, and this idea is often used in extreme metal such as Black Metal, Death, Thrash.
Chuck did have a side project called control denied, put out one album in 99, i believe after this one. Richard played drums on it, Chuck only played guitar, Tim Aymer sang clean vocals. Pretty good stuff if you want to hear more of Chuck and Richard playing.
The first album that made me listen to death metal. I was 11 or 12. Also I can recommend Control Denied. Its Death but with another singer (Chuck plays guitar). Great drumming from Richard Christy and more clean metal-singing.
They recorded without drum triggers at a great studio called Morrisound Recording in Florida. PS His other band is called 'Control Denied' and have a less harsh Rob Halford type of singer with the exact same line-up ua-cam.com/video/lCxINyXWvLU/v-deo.html
This record was digitally recorded on ProTools 6 LE 98-99. Effects were not added in after it was recorded, but during the recording process before the mix.
Andrew, there´s a full concert of Richard Christy playing with Death. It´s Live in Eindhoven 1998. The whole concert you can see a bit of Richard playing live..and all the band too, of course.
Hi Andrew! Glad to see that you made a reaction about a song by Death...Yes, indeed, amazing track from the legendary "The Sound of Perseverance" album...There are plenty of songs by Death that you should listen to, especially on "Symbolic" (1995) and "Individual Thought Patterns" (1993), both albums recorded with Gene Hoglan. The very first album of Atheist, "Piece of Time" (1989) is a masterpiece of "technical jazz/death-metal" and the drummer on the album is just phenomenal. I think you'll enjoy!... My best wishes for 2023!! Musical greetings from Greece 🥁🥁🎸🎸🎶🎶...
To me, this Album ist the ultimate Essence of Chuck's Music, his Vision in Sound, Rhythm, Emotion, I think that I can hear what he had to say without words, without Lyrics. Unfortunaly it was his last Album, but it was his best one.
Definitely check out the Control Denied album, he didn't even actually want to make this Death album initially but he owed the label one last Death album. Control Denied is the sound he wanted since just after Symbolic.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums He was also in a couple more groups called Iced Earth and Charred Walls Of The Damned. I learned of Richard from when I use to listen to the Howard Stern Show. He is a very humble drummer and always praises other drummers.
Sampling and drum replacement in metal goes way back beyond the 90s. Just read "Extremity Retained" by Jason Netherton, there is a segment from Scott Burns, famous metal sound engineer, he talks about how ridiculously challenging drum replacement was at that time. On this album, the kick sample is "Fusion" kick from Alesis D4 drum module.

HAHA!
Check out "Control Denied" the successor band of Death with Richard Christy on drums. There is also phenomenal drumming and riffing.
I'll get there!
Richard is one who inspire me to start playing drums more than 20 years ago.
So.. freakin.. TIGHT. Those tasteful snappy flourishes throughout make the drums in this song so killer.
When I think of Richard Christy I think of his cymbal work. So tasteful and inspiring. Legendary drummer in my book.
To this day nobody was able to replicate his drumming 100%, truly an underrated genius
I bet!!
Thanks Andrew for this reaction, really. I love DEATH music, those drums....
I need more Opeth, and for that - try something Nevermore, pls.
Yup I need more Opeth too!
Fantastic Band.. Chuck was Gold playing guitar and screaming in unison.. so much dynamic composition and interesting drumming.. ahead of its time this band.. captivating!
The whole album is a timeless classic
I remember when Richard used to leave the funniest voicemails on the Stern Show! They were so funny Howard would eventually end up hiring Richard fulltime, dude is hilarious! His parents were awesome!
Oh wow!
Perfect timing, I was just going back and re-watching your old Death videos on Sean and Gene the other day.
I can hear the work.
This is next level good
Man, you can't go wrong with Death.
Drums are the color not the time 🤯🤯 Now i get why the drumming in this album is so magical to me.. timing is elastic, and the drumming so colorful ✨
got to see them play this live in a small club in belgium in 1998 they were always my favorite band
You should also listen to Richard Christy on prank calls. He is one of my favorite prank callers ever
I need to check that out. Killer drummer
Death is a classic and legendary band for sure
One of my favourite metal songs. It also sounds like the drums/all basic tracks were recorded in one go - I wouldn't like to coordinate those stops before each verse after the fact!
Andrew, have you checked out the album demos?
I love how you can feel the small variations in tempo and "mistakes" like coming in too early or too late. It's raw greatness that add so much character and humanity to the songs.
i am quite certain anything and everything you hear was intentional, even the things you hear as imperfections.
"drums are not the time, drums are the color" - so true, so profound.
AWESOME!!
Richard christy is mah faaavorite...
My favorit BAND with my favorite DRUMMER - RICHARD CHRISTY \m/ - His drumming is far and beyond !!!
1,000 Eyes is also sick. Its from the album Symbolic (with Gene Hoglan the animal on drums, Symbolic was his masterpiece)
I need to investigate this band more
Richard is a beast and I love the drumsounds. They sound like...organic drums.
Chuck-fan since -1988.
Let the metal flow!
Thanks again for doing some honest metal reviews-Sean, Gene, and Richard are all amazing🤘🤘
RIP Chuck. Metal Legend. This band slays all.
I like to point out that Richard Christy also played with Chuck on his side project Control Denied. Another band you should try out. It has clean vocals as well.
I really wish more channels would check out Control Denied, The Fragile Art Of Existence is an epic album!! My favorite song is a tie between "Expect The Unexpected" and "Breaking The Broken", it sucks that Chuck passed away so early in life because he was putting out his best music he's ever written at the time. RIP Chuck Schuldiner, the man was a musical genius and a good decent man.
As much as I love Gene Hoglan, this album is one of the greatest drumming performances in metal history.
Gene is still better
IN ANY GENRE🙏
@@jaysonmerritt6666 You sound like you’re five years old
You should hear the drumming on the Human album. I saw them live in 1991? On the human tour. Death were best band . R.I.P. Chuck
Yeah this is special Jonny
I got this album from my classmates for my 18th birthday...great stuff! Cheers!
That’s awesome Zoran 🤘
check out Damaged - Nails. Drummer used to sit on milk crates and is ballistic. I think they opened for Pantera in Australia back in the 90s.
Richard is the man! And a classy dude, super cool to chat to etc
Ever since I first heard this album, the drums stood out to me. They really don't sound like any other metal album.
Another song to check by Death is Crystal Mountain. Still heavier stuff but a bit more proggy, lots of cool melodic stuff going on in there
"Traped" in a corner have inside an amazing Brucknerian harmonic progression
The first album that made me listen to death metal. I was 11 or 12. Also I can recommend Control Denied. Its Death but with another singer (Chuck plays guitar). Great drumming from Richard Christy and more clean metal-singing.
They recorded without drum triggers at a great studio called Morrisound Recording in Florida.
PS His other band is called 'Control Denied' and have a less harsh Rob Halford type of singer with the exact same line-up ua-cam.com/video/lCxINyXWvLU/v-deo.html
It’s the same singer lol
@@antonkrasnenkov Tim Aymar - vocals (1997-2001)
Amazing band/musicians/albums! Chuck!
Richard Christy is a beast on the drums. great contributions to Death’s Symbolic tour and this album. Watch Death Live in LA 1998
You're welcome! The metal music have a lot of interesting stuff, enjoy the journey!
Musical greetings from Greece 🥁🥁🎸🎸🎶🎶...
this is refreshing and makes me pass heavy gas while watching and listening.
In 1999, the drums where Alesis D4 triggers . All pseudo metal was using the D4. There were some organic drums mixed in.
Thank you. Greetings from Slovakia.
Hello!
To me, this Album ist the ultimate Essence of Chuck's Music, his Vision in Sound, Rhythm, Emotion, I think that I can hear what he had to say without words, without Lyrics.
Unfortunaly it was his last Album, but it was his best one.
He had one more album, but he called it 'Control Denied' Richard Christy played drums on it as well
Definitely check out the Control Denied album, he didn't even actually want to make this Death album initially but he owed the label one last Death album. Control Denied is the sound he wanted since just after Symbolic.
Its a shame we didnt get more with this line up rip chuck one of the greatest. Richard was great too
I recommend you check out some of Richards practice videos. He is absolutely an amazing drummer.
Can't wait
