  • Edit: I made it a whopping 6 days before she noticed. When we were loading the truck for our 4th of July trip, she remote started it to get the AC going...of course, a cold start which is louder. As we were putting luggage in the back she said, "The truck sounds different..."
    Busted. 🤣
    She hasn't asked me to put the stock muffler back on yet though, so I'm still calling it a win!
    __________________________________________
    I've wanted to add an exhaust system to this truck ever since we bought it, but the wife was against making it louder in any way since this is her daily driver. So, I did the right thing and modded the exhaust anyway!
    Unless you're going to be getting into forced induction and making big power numbers, there's very little reason to spend $500-$1500 on an aftermarket exhaust system unless you really enjoy a particular sound. The stock piping flows more than well enough to not be a restriction, but the annoying flapper valve and ridiculously big OEM muffler make these trucks sound pretty awful from the factory, and the flapper valve actually can be a bit of a restriction by itself. To make the truck actually sound like a truck, I went ahead and cut out the stock muffler and flapper valve and put a Magnaflow 12259 muffler in its place (5x8" oval, 18" body), along with adding Go Rhino 4" exhaust tip just to improve the looks a bit. To keep the cab noise and drone to the absolute minimum, I left the stock resonator in place. It sounds night and day better - now I just need to see how long it will take Mrs. Mechanic to notice. 😎
    The real reason I did this now is because I'm tuning the truck this coming week, and I wanted to make sure that any potential restriction from the OEM exhaust was removed in order to maximize the gains from the tune. I will post more on the tuning process very soon, so keep an eye out for the video(s) on that coming up!
    Thanks for watching!

    I have long been a fan of the Magnaflow. Did that to my last truck and getting ready to do the same to my current truck. Just a little above/louder than stock is just right for me.

      Thanks! I was hoping it would be helpful...I appreciate it when people put before and after sound clips in the video, but rarely are they back to back like that. It's hard to get a feel for the sound difference when you have to scroll back to the beginning of the video and bounce around.

      Nice! I'd give it some time, it gets quite a bit louder once the packing breaks in. I'm about to do a followup video, it's noticeably louder after nearly 18 months.

    the tip sticks out to keep acidic exhaust fumes from rusting the underside. That's why axles dumps are generally stupid.

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  2 роки тому +1

      Fair point for an axle dump where the exhaust gasses would collect under the whole vehicle, but I have my doubts as to whether or not a few inches of difference at the tailpipe would make any meaningful difference in causing corrosion, especially given the velocity of the exhaust gasses and the amount of air movement right behind the rear tire. Even at idle/in traffic, I don't see it being a contributing factor - it's getting shot out beyond the undercarriage whether the tip is recessed like mine, or left sticking out a foot. Anything the gasses hit at that point is a painted surface. NOx emissions typically only affect bare metal. My two pennies, anyway. I could certainly be incorrect.

    I just did the same setup on my 2011 Silverado 5.3. My truck did not have the resonator or flapper valve.
    I did install a new 3" intermediate pipe but kept the stock tail pipe for now.
    I also installed an S&B CAI just before the muffler install.
    To me the exhaust sounds a little deeper at idle but real close to stock .
    Where I really notice the sound is at around 3k RPM where it sounds awesome like yours.
    Your setup sounds more aggressive to me for some reason at lower RPMs.
    Did you ever get around to removing the resonator with this muffler?
    I wonder if the resonator contributes to the way your setup sounds?

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Рік тому

      I left the resonator in place since I didn't want my wife to get too pissed at me. 😂 I considered removing it after the fact, but honestly I don't feel the need anymore (I meant to film a sound update video over the summer but the job change/moving has kept me far too busy). The overall volume of the truck is quite a bit louder now that the matting inside the muffler has broken in. It's certainly not obnoxious, but you definitely know the truck isn't stock when it drives by if I'm on the throttle at all. Coasting is still really quiet, but it has a nice rumble to it anywhere off idle and you're right - around 3000 RPM it really sings. I have come to love this muffler, it's just about perfect for these trucks IMO. If I had removed the resonator, I don't think I would like the tone as much. I prefer a deep rumble as opposed to raspy/crackly, and removing the res may have pushed it too far toward crackly. As it is right now there are no pops/crackles at all and I want to keep it that way. Exhaust tone is a pretty subjective thing to most folks though, and maybe removing the res wouldn't have any effect at all, I don't know...but not gonna mess with a good thing for right now. 😎

    • @DavesTree
      @DavesTree Рік тому +1

      @@AllThingsMech I totally agree.
      I just wanted a nice deep low throaty (not rumble but) Grumble as opposed to ratty crackly.
      Would like to hear it at lower RPMs though. I'm going to put on a 3" tail and see if it makes any difference.
      Oh, and thanks for making this video. 👍 It's what made me decide on this muffler.

    I just ordered the same muffler for my 4.3L Lv3 doing the same thing. You could hollow out the 3rd cat it makes a fair bit more power I use alot less right foot getting going and it gives it a little more throaty sound but no drone even with the current stock muffler. The honeycomb will drill out to make a 3" hole in the center without removing all of it all keeping the packing sound insulation in the shell tight and still letting it breath. No codes chucked. Have you posted a follow up video? Any fuel improvements?

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Рік тому

      Unfortunately I can't dick with the cats now since moving to an emissions regulated county in Utah, but if we move and end up in a less restricted area I'll definitely keep that in mind. The muffler has definitely gotten louder over time, but it's still not obnoxious at all. Pretty loud on a cold start but mellows right out as it warms up; very rumbly, not raspy or crackly sounding (which I like). Cruising down the highway you can barely tell its on there. No real data on fuel mileage since we've done so much suspension work on this rig, plus adding a steel front bumper. We average about 15 in it right now though unless we're loaded down or towing.
      Edit: still planning on doing a follow up video, I was waiting for the weather to improve. Hopefully I can get that done here soon.

    Do you get any drone in the cabin at highway speeds? Around 2-2.5k RPM at 70-80 mph in my suburban the drone is unbearable. I feel like the shop may have botched the install.

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Рік тому

      I don't in my truck, but SUVs tend to have a little more drone since the cabin goes all the way to the rear bumper; it doesn't stop right after the second row like on the trucks so you'll hear more of those harmonics and overtones from the exhaust. Did they remove the flapper valve with the muffler, and did they cut out the OEM resonator in the rear?

    • @dammitcarl1082
      @dammitcarl1082 Рік тому

      @@AllThingsMech my truck doesn’t have a factory flapper valve or resonator, it’s a 2005 so I don’t think they came with those. The reason i suspect the shop did a bad job is because it sounds very rattly even at low RPM, besides the horrible droning at highway speeds. I hadn’t considered the SUV cab would make a difference though so i guess a little drone might be expected. Thanks!

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Рік тому

      It's quite a bit louder once fully broken in, takes about 6 months to reach full volume. Not obnoxious at all though, I still like the tone very much.

  • @alejandrotudonmanriquez7702

    if you remove the flapper valve would it throw a code?

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Рік тому

      Nope, no codes. The valve is completely mechanical, it's operated by spring pressure and is just there to reduce drone in the cabin when the truck goes into V4 mode.

  • @dustinss1
    @dustinss1 2 роки тому

    What size is the oem exhaust?

  • @carsmax
    @carsmax Рік тому

    What...the V 4 mode kicks in at cold start?I did not know that but makes sense to me(maybe just to me) because the engine use more gas when cold.1:46 I payed 2 weeks ago 199 $ at amazon one inlet/one outlet 2,5". I tell you the stuck muffler for my 2008 Tahoe is two times bigger !! Is it because my truck was for the european market?? It has the size of a coffin or fridge ,almost 3 feet !!

    • @AllThingsMech
      @AllThingsMech  Рік тому +1

      Let me clarify: V4 mode doesn't kick when you start the truck, but the flapper valve is there and creates a restriction which results in that fluttering noise you hear. The valve is just controlled by spring pressure, it's not computer actuated or anything, so it's more noticeable on a cold start when the truck is using more fuel to warm the cats up. Getting rid of it eliminates a small amount of restriction in the system, and removes that oddball fluttering sound entirely. I don't think your muffler is any different from the US-market trucks, although it could be I suppose. More than likely the muffler is just huge because they want it to be as quiet as possible.
