FILM DESCRIPTION:
Struggling artist Sonny Malone (Michael Beck) is trapped in a dull job painting album covers. He is instantly attracted to Kira (Olivia Newton-John), an anonymous woman randomly photographed in the background of one of his assignments, but no one is able to identify her. Visiting the auditorium where the cover was shot, Sonny finds the mysterious beauty, an ageless Greek muse, who encourages him to team up with old-fashioned Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly) to build a roller-skating disco.

This movie was way ahead of its time and so underrated. The merge of the 40s and 80s was so ingenious and brilliant to watch. It gave me a different perspective now compared to when I first saw it when Xanadu was released in 1980.
Agreed! The man who created this collaboration, this work of art is a genius!
That would be John Farrar, ONJ's longtime record producer and song writer.@@christinabobsquarepants1210
There should be an updated version of this performance fusing the 40's , 80's , and the 2020's.
@@enolamsamohtWhat a bonanza that would be!
When I was a kid..watching this particular scene absolutely AMAZED and FLOORED me when the big band and rock band fused together as one...my eyes went wide with excitement because it was so creative to a 9 year old mind...it's still enjoyable to watch🙂
Hadn't seen this in a long time and I just watched and noticed this. I've been calling this a "mashup" ahead of it's time and I found it amusing that they literally mashed up the stages even!
Me too, this was amazing-I was 13y yrs old when this movie came out!!
Same!! I was 9 as well :)
Me too
Same. Only my mind was 17 years old.🤣
Loved this scene so much, and love that Olivia was the voice of the 3 girls. RIP Olivia
I'm watching these clips and remembering how amazed I was by this movie and I'm fighting tears. I loved Olivia as a child and even though my musical tastes changed drastically, I still love her. I'm heartbroken.
@@Andrea1542 Sending hugs my friend, be gentle with yourself.
@@Andrea1542 I am here with you ❤️ 💕 💖.....Olivia was and IS an 🤍 😇 🤍
I'm a huge Olivia fan and when I saw the movie, I did not realize they were lip syncing to Olivia's voice. So obvious now and then I saw the video Olivia did where she plays the 3 singers a few months later. I am deaf in one ear so maybe I can use that as an excuse? I was also somewhat curious about their hairstyles and clothes and that distracted me.
Same here
when i finally realized that both era bands were basically singing the same song just in different styles, it blew my mind as a kid!
It's not the same song in different styles. What they share is the same timing. It's a mashup.
@@VicMikesvideodiary Swing/Boogie used their 20's timing without Rock's added undersound at a faster beat) but carried the words "dancing" and "tonight" and so the 80s rock band (the Tubes) had their own Rock 80s timing (same as 20s) but also carried the words "dancin'" and "tonight" and so they meshed on words and their timings are compatible with 80s undertones playing at about 2x the beat rate.
But they weren’t singing the same song…
Still my favorite scene from this movie. The combination of the two styles at the end gives me goosebumps.
100% ... I am a 2000' DJ's ... to me, this is Genius!
This and the Gene Kelly/Olivia N-J dancing and duet were my favs
Really?
Same here, perfect and unique mix
Favorite part of the whole movie.
Mine too!
Amazing mix of styles. Genius!
Even better than the finale.
The first “Mash Up” ever! Was my favorite too.
Yessss
That Merge..both the Music and the Stages was and is still amazing...just watched it again..
That merge was practically seamless. A perfect way to symbolize the merging of the old with the new.
The original Mashup that GLEE made popular.
I seem to recall that it took two or three takes, but once it was done, everyone let out a cheer!
Still one of the BEST scenes in cinematic history
I will never understand how this movie is a flop to so many.. It`s freaking amazing!
Too far ahead of it's time.
@@petercohen3966 true my friend !! I all ways loved this film but !! Most people aren't awaken enough to understand it properly !! Thank you for sharing with me your intelligence !!
I think they casted the wrong leading male!
@@eleven1609 - Nope. He was perfect.
Michael Beck didn’t have the chemistry to pull off the romantic lead. Especially next to ONJ!
Can’t tell you how many times I rocked out to this as a kid. One of my favourite tracks on the album and such an awesome seen in Xanadu.
RIP my beautiful Olivia. 💜🌸
John Farrar, Olivia's long time songwriter and record producer is brilliant. She always said so. When the Xanadu movie producer went to Jeff Lynne and John Farrar needing a song that fused the 40's and 80's style, Jeff Lynne backed up and said, no way. John Farrar, always looking out for Olivia, said, I will give it a try. I don't know why with more than 200 comments on this song, his name is not mentioned at all. He wrote all of ONJ's songs for the movie Xanadu, except the title track. Plus he also wrote You're The One That I Want and Hopelessly Devoted to You for the movie Grease. He wrote many songs for ONJ over the years, including Have You Never Been Mellow, A Little More Love, Sam, Make a Move on Me, Landslide and many more. He also produced all of her records from 1971 to 1985.
songwriters generally aint well known....even people dont know diane warren write half the hits during 80s
Really answers the question “can something be terrible and fantastic at the same time?” With a resounding yes!
The fusion is off the chain!!!! how the 30s and the 80s work together!!!
40's
@@taurusfroggy 40s and 70s (the movie came out in 1980, so I'm guessing the film was mostly shot in 1979).
The Tubes
The moment when the 2 couples comes together give me goosebumps still. Always will be my favorite movie. When I was a kid I was so interested in the '40 and to see this fusion is magical.
The godfather of Mash-ups
R.I.P. Olivia Newton-John.
1948 - 2022.
Iconic and ahead of it’s time. Still amazes.
My favorite scene!
Very underated movie. I think that the main problem was that people weren't expecting a meuse based musical.
If you accept it for what it is, a musical about a frustrated artist who had a bit of magic put in his life to inspire him from the supernatural realm, then it's a fantastic film and I don't care what anyone says.
Due to the variety of singers and the music itself plus the fantastic songs, especially the ingenious, great last song mashup, this movie definitely has the best movie soundtrack that I've ever heard and I say that because they were all good, with not a dud amongst them which is more than you can say for Grease.
I bought the album the week it came out as a hgih school senior, but didn't see the film immediately because of the reviews. When I say I loved the soundtrack, I literally wore out the ELO side of the album and had to fall back to the ONJ side just to pace myself. Four years later, a theatre near me was showing "Xanadu" as the Thursday midnight movie. I remembered I hadn't seen it yet, so I did. The music kept me in the theatre, but the movie was completely lost on me. That was 38 years ago. About 18 years ago, a friend gave me the "Xanadu" DVD for my birthday. I still haven't opened it. With ONJ passing and reading your comment, I may give it a try again very soon. Regardless of the outcome, thank you for the insight.
Your definition, summery and opinion is the ever best and correct of all I read. 100% agreement of me!
I love this movie so much!!!! I watch it for 40 years now! Rest in Peace Olivia....KIRA! I love you!
The facial expressions from the blonde singer in the 40’s trio always crack me up.
OMG me too. It’s kinda all about her and her being a little kooky and behind 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I loved it then, I love it now!!!
This scene alone has stuck with me since being a little kid. I always sung it and one of the first movies along with Fame to inspire me to be a performer back then.
The first mash up!!!! loved it, you don't watch this movie for the acting, but the entertainment is off the cart.....
The Weirdest fusion of Swing with New Age Punk, and some how it works with this scene.
One of the greatest musical numbers in a film ever!!!
I was 10 when this moxie hit theaters - it literally is what made me want to be a lifelong performer, not to mention a HUGE Olivia fan. To this day I am still both. 💖😎
And the two styles of music went together so well.
This is MAGIC.
To ALL the theaters that put this movie back in theaters after ONJ passed. THANK YOU! Good Luck.not having the greatest time ever seeing this on the big screen
Xanadu was the king of mashups before they ever existed
Look. No one can tell me this isn't fantastic. It IS. The Tubes and Olivia Newton John. YAS
Agree!
And Electric Light Orchestra!
@@marcisikoffNot ELO. It’s all John Farrar. Look him up. Why he gets no mentions is beyond me.
Saw this movie in the theater as a kid during its original theatrical run. This scene was unforgettable-even if I mostly forgot the rest of the movie. Something about seeing that merge moment, on a gigantic screen, soundtrack speakers blasting…I may have held my breath for the sheer astonishment of it. Ah, the simple pleasures of the 80s😄
The Tubes were perfect for it. I saw them play a few years ago and they did a free meet and greet. Got To meet Fee Waybill, Rick Anderson, Roger Steen and Prairie Prince. Really nice guys.
Thank you for a high resolution version. This movie meant so much to me.
This is the most amazing mash-up before mash-ups were a thing. This movie is so underrated!
This scene is the ah!t!!. As a Dj this is mixing at its finest. Vanglorious Xanadu got an A+ and im a hard judge. 👍👍👍
Still a favourite of mine, to this day!! Brilliantly done! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ 💃🏻🕺🏼💃🏻🕺🏼💃🏻 RIP Beautiful Olivia. 💔💔💔
If the 80s had actually been this cool and debauched and synthy ... Oh yeah. It was!
This movie is such a guilty pleasure!
Awesome how it just flows soooo smoothly 😎
I think what really makes this movie lackluster in the eyes of critics is the camera operation. Poor angles, needs better stability overall. This film is immortal regardless , its creativity is unmatched!
this movie invented mashups!
One of the best musical numbers of the whole movie
Love these comments..
I was 8 when dad took us to see this.
We were excited and blown away...
You can recognize the Solid Gold dancers from the hit tv show in the background..
Darcel Wynn
I will never forget this scene! ❤️❤️❤️
This movie is amazing … I’m glad I’m old enough to appreciate it!!
I just thought this was the cleverest song I'd ever seen when I was a 12 year old boy.
This scene is just so freaking amazing! You can't help but feel the energy , the excitement, electricity from it and want to dance ! ❤
That was Olivia Newton John singing the girls were just lip syncing
The redhead 40's singer looks like Rachel McAdams. 😲 I can't unsee it.😁 I still love this song/mashup in 2022.❤
When I was 12 I had the Xanadu soundtrack and knew all the songs and music before ever seeing the movie. It was great seeing the songs come to life on the big screen ☺
I freaking love this movie . Like totally for sure it’s so tubular 😂♥️🙏
So TUBESular too!! 😎👍
This is what changed my life as a kid and knew what I wanted to do ….🤯❤️
So overlooked in the move, a masterpiece
That's damned ingenious. Worth the price of admission alone.
THIS IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S BEST MASH-UPS, EVER!
ELO & ONJ, THE MUSES ARE PLEASED
Not ELO. It’s all John Farrar. Look him up.
While this scene is playing in the film you almost forget really that Sonny and Danny are still there watching all of this.
My earliest initiation to (early form of)metal, loved it !! Been hooked ever since !!!!!!!
What truly amazes me is I watched this when it was brand new 40 years ago,, about a music era that was then current and 40 years prior to that. Still better than anything today…..
If only the whole movie could have been this totally awesome and inventive ...
One of my favorite movies of the ‘70s.
I love Xanadu
Got to see this whole film, the music has vibes
Whatever genius composed this deserves an award
Still mesmerizing all these years later.
Some Tubes and Olivia Newton-John!
Whoever thought of the sequence was absolutely brilliant it’s one of my favorite of all times I live when two genres get together and this was brilliant
I remember watching this in the theater and thinking that the movie was pretty boring. The music was good but the movie sucked until this scene. For some reason, this scene gave me chills. It still does.
Great music. I saw it when I was 11. First time I had ever heard of the Electric Light Orchestra. I am now a life long fan of ELO.
Olivia Newton-John
And The Tubes
"Dancin'"
Xanadu
MCA Records, 1980
Olivia Newton John, Gene Kelly, roller skating, ELO and big bands, neon everywhere, makeup and hairstyle, greek mythology, break dancing, leg warmers… this is pure 80s it’s everything there.
The director is genius. Amazing
Tubes keyboard guys predated Dennis DeYoung and Soundgarden.
Musical perfection.
I was 12 when this movie came out. Loved it then and still love it.
Love the mashup!
Great mash-up.
I was 10 years old and this Movie never gets Old good times
3:05 Did anyone else see the young girl in pink leap from the upper level to the middle level behind the singer and do it in at least THREE INCH high heels?
never noticed that until now! Good eyes!
And thus Postmodern Jukebox was born! 😉😎
The Tubes! Heard one of their songs on the radio just recently, and it led me here 😅 That trigger took me back 40yrs in an instant!
genius song of how you can love many styles of music 🎶
Only one rock act could pull this off and they somehow got them in the movie. The Tubes
Nailed it!
I rewound and rewound this over and over as a child the collision of the two songs gave me goosebumps
How they merged the 40s and modern music together was just brilliant!!!!
Fee and The Tubes killed this! Just amazing!!
Brillante, genial, esa película no se le ha dado la importancia que tiene, es arte y será un clásico
Even though Olivia isn’t in this clip, I’m pretty sure that’s her singing voice being used. Someone please confirm.
100% Olivia's voice
@@corepcn Thank you. I don’t get why she wasn’t used in the clip. Does anyone know?
Loved this movie.
Some of the dancers seem to be listening to different music (I’m looking at you short woman in pink bodysuit), but most others hit everything right on. As a kid, the part where the woman in zebra print gets tied up with phone cords while moaning and when they play the women like guitars made be laugh so hard.
Fabulous!!!
Best movie⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite scene, ty for posting it
Watched this yesterday and this scene was awesome
I LOVE IT!
O inté e o hoje emreferencia aos saudosos anos 80. Show . Uma das melhores combinações de performances que já assisti em um musical .
I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANYONE NOT DANCING DURING THIS.
Love this movie.
Awesome movie with Fee Waybill and the Tubes playing!!!
Magical
the 40's and the 80's added nicely...just need the tik tok generation today to meld in, it's been 40yrs
