If the whole movie had been on this level (even though there's a certain 2D flatness to the sequence), it most certainly would have been the big hit because the soundtrack itself is almost epic ... (This song was The Tubes and ONJ doing boogie woogie pop but don't forget half the record is ELO in top form ... )
Xanadu is basically a bunch of really good music videos strung together by something I don't even think qualifies as a plot. Like, it helps to think of "All Over the World" as an ELO video that happens to have Gene Kelly in it.
@@josephkissel6062 yup, that 2D "flatness" is all fault of the cinematographer... with the worst shots and angles for the cameras, with zero elevation. That made most of the dancing scenes cheap or ordinary...

I love this movie and all the dancing. I saw this for the first time on the big screen yesterday, at a special cinema showing called the Xanadu Glow-A-Thon. All the audience members were supplied with glow sticks. I was in the front row and noticed a little goof...at 3:10, that object on the floor is one of the dancer's folding fans that was dropped accidentally. The zoot-suiters in yellow carefully step over it and carry on.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie. Have not watched this in a long time. Imagine how many rehearsals were needed, how many takes-- amazing. Also, the soundtrack version of this song (well, both tunes if we're being realistic) is a bit different; I prefer the audio here because there are added "goodies" and it's a bit longer. jmil2tx - I totally agree with you. I thought this was a brilliant mix of two different styles of music. It used to piss me off when I would read that critics thought this part of the film was awfully horrific and painful to watch. They just don't have Magic I guess.
Gotta love the internet for rarities like this one. A truly underated film, released at a time when movie musicals had fallen out of favor. I remember sitting in the move theater watching this scene astounded at how well the music styles were meshed together. I still feel that way today. Props to John Farrar, the singer-songwriter-producer, who allmusic.com credits with this song along with the rest of the A-side of the Xanadu soundtrack LP.
At the time 1980 I was 15 and yeah I was fascinated but today as I revisit, I'm actually amazed at just how well done this musical actually was. They considered this movie a flop, but I can tell you it was NO FLOP, it was actually Genius! I would loveee to see them remake this movie with 1980 as the old style and 2022ish as the modern. I wonder who could play Kira and Sonny.
The one thing I love about this is that, even though this (clip alone) was filmed in the 80's it's something we can all identify with and love because of the fusion of two totally different eras becoming one. It's just genius! :-D
I gotta say, even though my school used this song in their dancing production and I heard it a million times while I was teching, It STILL gives me shivers. I absolutely adore this song and I have no idea why it was never too popular.
I can rememeber this film when I was a kid, this was so famous and popular in Mexico, but unfortunately I never had the chance to watch it. I'm almost 50 and I could rent it in YT, I totally enjoyed it! This scene means the real beginning of the 80's.
I never get tired of watching this video (of course I have the movie) It's so wonderful to see the merge of the two different styles and become just one medley. Those 35 down critics really don't know how to appreciate music
Fantastico!
I think Julie is right. I could watch this over and over again because it is so well put together and catchy that I could be one the best numbers in movie history!
I also love when the 40's and 70's dancers come together. Would be interesting if they tried a number like this in a future musical with other eras and styles of dancing and music coming together.
I grew up with both genres of music, so when I saw this movie as a kid I immediately fell in love with it. I love how it all comes together in the end. And the trio from the bandstand remind me of The Andrews Sisters, who I listened to a lot growing up because we're huge Abbott & Costello fans and they made frequent appearances in their movies.
I just noticed after all these years and maybe 100 times watching this that the 2 Partners took each other's Opposites into their Worlds @6:22 or so.. Cool.
This scene made me cry due to it's genius approximately the 1st twenty-seven times i observed it, and the very first time when Gene Kelly exclaims, "I love it!!" I could help shouting, "ME TOO!" That trio hurts my heart, I want to be them.
One of the first mashups before Glee ever existed. I was severely disappointed when they had Olivia on the show, and they didn't do a single Xanadu song; in my opinion this was her best movie.
@@biffodio -Two different melodies in two separate keys with different time signatures and diametrically opposed lyrics. Sounds like a mashup to me. But what do I know, having studied music theory, having a Music teacher mother and playing several instruments myself.
@@guruuvy "Diametrically opposed lyrics" doesn't fit in any sense. For example, the exact opposite of "Got some dancin' to do" is not "I wanna dance with you." If you intended to cite the genre juxtaposition, that only strengthens my point. This is a single piece written to illustrate the bridging of two contrasting characters who happen to have found the same muse. A solitary composition can't be a mashup because a mashup is defined as a melding of two or more compositions into something new. A mashup is not defined as requiring sources with different keys, time signatures, or subject matter. Incidentally, can you tell me the separate time signatures and keys within this song?
You know that this was the best part of the film, musically. I am still wowed by the meshing of the two era's and how well it was coordinated. Well done!
@MusicCndctr Two bands wrote it up. The "bandstand" band wrote their half, the Tubes wrote their half...they were NOT allowed to communicate til both halves were created...then, they were tied together. -Got this from the Special features from the DVD of Xanadu-

Except, for the first time out of the many times I've seen this scene, I just noticed that the back row of the 40's band got blocked out by the Tubes wall of speakers! And all this time I thought what a great job they did mixing the two stages together.
It should be noted that the 80s are just as old now as the 40s were then. And the beauty hasn't faded at all.

the amount of genius behind this is astounding.
1980! Now 2021!!!
Still f...... M.A.S.T.E.R.P.I.E.C.E. !!!!!
EARGASM!!!! 💥💥💥💥
The one thing I love about this is that, even though this (clip alone) was filmed in the 80's it's something we can all identify with and love because of the fusion of two totally different eras becoming one. It's just genius! :-D
Loved the combo. Such good memories.
Great mergence of two great eras
I gotta say, even though my school used this song in their dancing production and I heard it a million times while I was teching, It STILL gives me shivers. I absolutely adore this song and I have no idea why it was never too popular.
I AM IN LOVE with this! First saw it on HBO when I was 11!!!
Xanadu goes along with rainbows and unicorns and glitter in my world. Still a fan!!
Love this whole damn movie! I have the Dvd, CD, the Record when it came out in 1980 and VHS..lol it's one of my favorites!
I can rememeber this film when I was a kid, this was so famous and popular in Mexico, but unfortunately I never had the chance to watch it. I'm almost 50 and I could rent it in YT, I totally enjoyed it! This scene means the real beginning of the 80's.
Whoa whoa keep it down 1940s, 1980s is starting to freak the fuck out!
Lonestar327 man...that has to be the best comment I've ever seen
drexulgeewrangle dont thank me, thank the cinema snob
This mashup is the best ever made!! I listened to this song when I was a pimply teen and now I'm 52 and still LOOOVE it!!
Wonderful fusion of musical styles spanning forty years. Whoever did this arrangement did a wonderful job.
I never get tired of watching this video (of course I have the movie) It's so wonderful to see the merge of the two different styles and become just one medley. Those 35 down critics really don't know how to appreciate music
this was my first exposure to the concept of a mash-up. Thought it was the most awesome thing ever.
My sister's favorite movie..I bought the VHS..and put it in her casket when she passed...RIP Constance
Fantastico!
Back here today remembering Liv💙
I think Julie is right. I could watch this over and over again because it is so well put together and catchy that I could be one the best numbers in movie history!
I was 13 when this movie came out. I really love this song, especially the end were the two styles of music merge. It's bliss!
The entire concept of this movie was fueled by mountains of cocaine, but you have to give them credit: the creativity was off the charts.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I AGREE!
This was a masterpiece! Found out about it by accident after The Tubes became well known in the early 80's.
I also love when the 40's and 70's dancers come together. Would be interesting if they tried a number like this in a future musical with other eras and styles of dancing and music coming together.
I would love that. What a wonderful idea! 👏
This ain't no mashup.
biffodio Yes. It. Is.
@@anthonycoca2202 A mashup combines separate sources. This is a single contrapuntal piece.
Well done!
Awesome! I somehow got this song in my head today, so this evening I came to find the video here. Thanks for posting it. I agree, it's brilliant!!
This is the coolest scene ever! Who thought this up is a genius!
Old School Meets 80's.....Wonderful Document!
ziggy stardust meet The Andrews sisters....that would be a show I would pay to see in Real life :)
Imagine if Xanadu was as good as this amazing number all the way through! Brilliantly done!
One of my favorites acts in this movie. Still gives me goosebumps.
@MusicCndctr Two bands wrote it up. The "bandstand" band wrote their half, the Tubes wrote their half...they were NOT allowed to communicate til both halves were created...then, they were tied together. -Got this from the Special features from the DVD of Xanadu-
Love Xanadu!
Heck, I still have the Xanadu soundtrack on cassette tape somewhere :) Saw the movie in my mid teens, and I have to agree with a lot of people when they say that this was the best scene. I had goose bumps when I first saw it.
Bought the dvd and then had to get the cd for the car
I saw this in the theaters when it came out. I loved it then. I love it now. It was fun and entertaining and the music was great.
To anyone whoever watched Solid Gold would probably recognize the lady dancing in the blue leopard outfit as one of the former dancers from that show.
R.I.P. Olivia Newton John
*Love* This Song! Still so catchy and clever! ✖ANADU was Awesome!
I like how the other Muses keep popping up in the movie as if making Xanadu a club was so important that Mount Olympus put many goddesses on this project LOL! I love Danny and Sonny's enthusiastic description of their personal vision too!
I would SO go to an *40s/80s* mashup club! I could wear a fedora and my gal could shake her snood! (That's the net covering the back of the singers' hair). But I WON'T go to a 30s/70s mashup club! Soup Lines and Polyester, yuck LOL! Thanks for posting!!
🧡
I would go so I had an excuse to wear a zoot suit. ;)
Fantastic!
Who says' Big band and 80's pop rock can't be meshed together? One of my favorite scenes of the movie.
Except, for the first time out of the many times I've seen this scene, I just noticed that the back row of the 40's band got blocked out by the Tubes wall of speakers! And all this time I thought what a great job they did mixing the two stages together.
Damn I love this! The amazing choreography the way this song mashes up so well without sounding like a bunch of noise. It's just so magical.
wthis at the movies, I wished I could have jumped into the screen and danced with the cast.
The dude from the Tubes, and Olivia in 3 part harmony, what could be better?
