Yeah, a lot of people think Vietnam is a 3rd world slum country, but it isn't. India is more on par with that kind of viewpoint. But both countries have some slum areas, and of course, modern skyscrapers and stuff. Glad you enjoyed the video. ^^

I enjoyed railroad part 1 and also now part 2. I can’t imagine what’s like to live right by the railroad, very interesting all the green plants, trees and clothes hanging on the tree, cabbages dry on the railroad track and the train went right over....how crazy is that....but life seems very normal for the people that live around there. Hey Cory! I tuned in again~ I was going to just lurk but this time. Instead I laughed right before you laughed @ 4:12 b/c of the situation with the wires and the clothes and felt the need to comment. It's insane omg! I would be terrified. On a slightly different note though. I'm not trying to glorify their situation (if they are indeed poverty stricken), but I love skinny houses too. Most of them catch my attention, from the weathered, sun bleached, I've-seen-better-days look that seems common to Hanoi through your lenses to the polished, upscale ones that you see in central Amsterdam.
The skinny houses, called "tube homes", is very common in Vietnam because of land prices. So families or whoever will buy a narrow plot of land cause it's cheaper that way. Then they build vertically. So many of these homes are narrow, but they go back very far so it's a long space. Anyway, I wouldn't say it's "poverty" in the sense that they are starving and have no clean water, but it's definitely a lower income lifestyle. They leave peacefully and within their means. I want to make more videos about the way Hanoi's architecture looks. It's really a magical feeling seeing old French buildings decaying next to a make shift house next to a modern spa with glass facade. Glad you liked the video Kaimicah!

Yeah, 12pm on the southern tracks where this was filmed. The northern tracks in my previous train street video, it's iffy... they say 3pm and 7pm... but I've never seen a 3pm train there, and the 7pm train actually went by around 6:30pm. So I dunno... But it's almost clockwork to see it at 12pm on the southern tracks from this video. Check the description box for the Google Maps link. ^^

Hmm... some trains are long, some are short. I think the one that passed by in this video was a shorter one. I could be wrong, though. hehehe Oh that's cool, yeah, Alex was in Hanoi for a few days over the weekend so we met up. We also collab'd with Charly on egg coffee video, we'll be releasing our vlogs at the same time on Sunday. ^^ I think most UA-camrs know of each other, whether they have met or not in person. hehehe It was cool to finally meet him, we tried to meet up in 2015, but it didn't work out with our timing.
Have watched them both............always wanted to take that train as I grew up on Pullman cars growing up in Chicago (father worked for Pullman) and spent three years in I corps and watched and flew over those trains from 65-71 and never got the chance to ride between Danang and Hue through the Hai Van Pass

In Saigon there's also a train street from Saigon railway station to Go Vap railways station. If you have chance going to Saigon, you definitely should go and explore it!
Yeah!!! Definitely check out the Google Map link in the description box to see where this street is located at. It's easily walking distance from Old Quarter, Temple of Literature, and of course the Hanoi Railway Station. ^^
Good video Cory. I remember when I was living & working in VN from 2002 - 2012, to the Europeans, these alleys are no big deal, reminds them of the old neighbors full of small shops and eateries back home. For the Aussies, Canadians and Americans, it was really "scary" and sinister looking. Tell you what though, there must be some really good eating at awesome price in those alleys, that's for sure. Have you taken any sidewalk haircut and shaving yet?
Thanks Minh, glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, when I went to Italy, it was full of amazing little alleys and stuff with awesome cafes and hidden treasures. In America, it's quite the opposite. Alleys are reserved for dumpsters and are always portrayed as being places where muggers hang out waiting for you to walk by, and in many cases, that's very true. I haven't really done the street barber thing yet, though I see it all the time. I think I avoid that mainly because 1) I can't speak Vietnamese to tell them how to do my hair and 2) I don't trust these guys. I'm very picky when I get my haircut, so I seek out a proper barber shop or salon to go to. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks Bubulis. They are all kinds of wires for communication, power, data, etc. This is what wires look like in Vietnam. Thailand is just as crazy, if not even more, with the wires. But I feel Thailand organizes the wires better. I would hate to be an electrician or service worker for those wires in either country. lol

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, I've seen slums before and these are not slums, but I know what you mean. Other people who don't know what a real slum is like will think this is a slum.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! Just make sure if you come to Vietnam, do not come during the Lunar New Year (called Tet). Essentially the whole country shuts down for almost 2 weeks, so stores, restaurants, and many other places will be closed.

I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. To my knowledge, the houses along the track were built after the tracks. The tracks were built by the French very long time ago. After this video was made, the area was greatly gentrified with many cafes popping up to cater to tourists. It was very bad. But the government wasn't happy with all the tourists going there and the safety concerns related to it. So they actually forced all the cafes there to close. And the train street is closed to tourists now. Police guard the area and tourists aren't allowed to enter the tracks, only local Vietnamese. So this video actually captured a real and raw time for these tracks, before the gentrification, and before it was shut down from tourists.
Yes. Most of Hanoi's old architecture are left over from the French Occupation, which ended in 1945. That's what I really love about this city. It adds so much character and richness to the environment. Glad you liked the video! ^^
Very nice video. The meat in Vietnam is so tasty, and fresh. I'm from Denmark and the meat here has to hang for 21 days before it will be sold. Going to Vietnam in 3 months. :)

Yeah! Too bad we didn't see this when we walked on the north side. It was moving a lot faster than I expected, especially on the curve in the narrow part. I guess they do it everyday so they know how fast they can safely move through those areas. ^^
I'm glad you think it's cool, some people without an open mind consider these places "slums" or "dumps" and I want to show those people that is not true. Accidents do happen, though I think not around these areas. The people have been living here for decades, they know how to avoid the danger. The hits and deaths are more out in the countryside or outskirts of the city where there are no barriers or signs and people think they can pass in front of the train moving at high speed without consequence. I read somewhere that quite a lot of people die each year, but not really in the cities.

There aren't really any "high end" areas in Hanoi, just some places with modern high rises and tall office buildings. But the surrounding neighborhoods all still look much like the one in this video. But I'll try to go to one of those places with lots of tall buildings so you can see what that's like. ^^ Thanks for watching!

Feed The Cory I left VN since 1988 and don’t even remember what my alley look like anymore it would be great to see it again. My alley called “Ngõ Muối” on Cầu Đất street, right beside a very famous bakery that make the most famous moon cake “Đông Phương” (your GF know for sure). I think you’ll find it very interesting.

It depends, but you can rent a whole 3 story house with 4 or 5 bedrooms for around $500~$700 a month. Maybe even bigger and for cheaper if you go further away from the city center.

Yeah! I think that one market in Thailand wins for craziest train street, though. The market moves back as the train arrives, the cars are literally passing right over fruits and veggies. Have you seen videos about that place? I also saw some crazy train videos in India. Those places make this train street in Hanoi look very tame. hehehe
I was curious about the crime out there, like in the States walking around an alley, near the tracks, generally isn’t the safest place for a leisurely stroll. It really looks so nice and peaceful there. You have inspired us to take a trip and are planning now, gonna go to Hanoi, can’t wait!
This is why I love Asia. It's not like in America where walking near tracks is considered dangerous and where you might get mugged, shot, stabbed, jumped, raped, killed, etc. I've lived in DC, Baltimore, Honolulu and I saw some seriously messed up places there and witnessed terrible crimes right in front of my eyes. Vietnam is SUPER safe, the most you'd have to really worry about in Hanoi is being overcharged for stuff. In Saigon, though, purse and camera snatchings happen regularly. Very similar to crime in Rome, for example, except I think in Rome they got the pick-pocketing down. In Saigon it's just snatch and flee away on motorcycles. You'll be totally fine here in Hanoi, and even if you go to Saigon, as long as you just stay smart and aware of your belongings and surroundings.
As long as tourists use common sense and follow the warnings the cafe owners and residents give, then it's OK. Some people are too caught up in trying to take the perfect picture, they don't move out of the way until the last moment. I've seen tourists do that a few times. The residents and cafe owners definitely yell for people to move out of the way.
Okay.No chicken sex this time and we finally got to see the train up-close.For a second there, I thought the train was going to make a quick stop.The houses didnt shake and everything didnt drop to the ground as the train passed by, right?
I have been to the north train street. I did not know about the south side which does look to be not as wide as the north side. How far from the end of the bridge it the south side train street?
From Long Bien bridge? If you follow the tracks towards the north side of train street, from there it's maybe just a 15 minute walk south. You pass the Hanoi Railway Station as you go south, it's really close actually.
Yeah, daily wages in Vietnam are extremely low compared to other countries. But locals live within their means, are very peaceful and friendly, and they take care of each other. ^^ Thanks for commenting!
The train tracks seems to be the most peaceful place in Hanoi. People just let their pets, dogs, cats, chickens and vegetables out in the train tracks without any supervision. I wonder what happens to the chickens who had sex on the train tracks on the north side train street. Did they die happy? But that little alleyway at the end had so many activities and sights and sounds to behold. You can never get bored just by walking alone.

I can confirmed what Cory said is truth. I was there last week and the train came at about 11.50am. So be there at least 30mins early before 12pm. Thanks to Cory I was able to get a cool video of the incoming train.

I Lived And Fought In Vietnam For 2 Years during The 60's. Liked The Food & The People. I Would Be Living in Southeast Asia Now But I Don't Like The Heat, Humidity, Rain, Pollution and High-Density Urban Living. But It's Nice to Visit and Live Vicariously Through Your Videos. Good Job!! You could come out this way but live in a smaller, more quiet kind of a place like Da Nang or Hoi An. You still get some city-like aspects, but it's much more relaxed and chill, and the countryside is very nearby. You'd still have to deal with the heat, rain and humidity, though. I Liked the Highlands around Dalat and Pleiku. Maybe you could Visit Some Mountain towns close to Hanoi sometimes in the Future. Like Sapa, Ha Giang and Ba Be. Gotta Laugh. Traveling in South East Asia About 50 Years ago made me realize that the Original People in most Asian Countries are a Dirty Little Secret Hidden Away in the Mountains Like the Montagnards in Vietnam. And Treated Like The U.S. treats the Indians. LOL!!! Keep Up the Good Work!!!
Hanoi is a more conservative city and there are no beaches nearby. But you can still party here and meet people. I can't speak for Saigon, since I've never been there, but I hear a lot of other negative things about partying down there. I guess it's up to you.

Yeah, 12pm on the southern tracks where this was filmed.
The northern tracks in my previous train street video, it's iffy... they say 3pm and 7pm... but I've never seen a 3pm train there, and the 7pm train actually went by around 6:30pm. So I dunno...
But it's almost clockwork to see it at 12pm on the southern tracks from this video.

Finally!! It is good that the train came haha, do you think trains in Vietnam are quite long? Hmm... some trains are long, some are short. I think the one that passed by in this video was a shorter one. I could be wrong, though. hehehe Oh that's cool, yeah, Alex was in Hanoi for a few days over the weekend so we met up. We also collab'd with Charly on egg coffee video, we'll be releasing our vlogs at the same time on Sunday. ^^
I think most UA-camrs know of each other, whether they have met or not in person. hehehe It was cool to finally meet him, we tried to meet up in 2015, but it didn't work out with our timing.

Have watched them both............always wanted to take that train as I grew up on Pullman cars growing up in Chicago (father worked for Pullman) and spent three years in I corps and watched and flew over those trains from 65-71 and never got the chance to ride between Danang and Hue through the Hai Van Pass

In Saigon there's also a train street from Saigon railway station to Go Vap railways station. If you have chance going to Saigon, you definitely should go and explore it!

I took that train when i went in Vietnam last december, it was amazing!
Good video Cory. I remember when I was living & working in VN from 2002 - 2012, to the Europeans, these alleys are no big deal, reminds them of the old neighbors full of small shops and eateries back home. For the Aussies, Canadians and Americans, it was really "scary" and sinister looking. Tell you what though, there must be some really good eating at awesome price in those alleys, that's for sure. Have you taken any sidewalk haircut and shaving yet?
Thanks Minh, glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, when I went to Italy, it was full of amazing little alleys and stuff with awesome cafes and hidden treasures. In America, it's quite the opposite. Alleys are reserved for dumpsters and are always portrayed as being places where muggers hang out waiting for you to walk by, and in many cases, that's very true. I haven't really done the street barber thing yet, though I see it all the time. I think I avoid that mainly because 1) I can't speak Vietnamese to tell them how to do my hair and 2) I don't trust these guys. I'm very picky when I get my haircut, so I seek out a proper barber shop or salon to go to.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, I've seen slums before and these are not slums, but I know what you mean. Other people who don't know what a real slum is like will think this is a slum.

I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. To my knowledge, the houses along the track were built after the tracks. The tracks were built by the French very long time ago.
After this video was made, the area was greatly gentrified with many cafes popping up to cater to tourists. It was very bad.
But the government wasn't happy with all the tourists going there and the safety concerns related to it. So they actually forced all the cafes there to close.
And the train street is closed to tourists now. Police guard the area and tourists aren't allowed to enter the tracks, only local Vietnamese.
So this video actually captured a real and raw time for these tracks, before the gentrification, and before it was shut down from tourists.

Yes. Most of Hanoi's old architecture are left over from the French Occupation, which ended in 1945.
That's what I really love about this city. It adds so much character and richness to the environment.

It was moving a lot faster than I expected, especially on the curve in the narrow part. I guess they do it everyday so they know how fast they can safely move through those areas. ^^

I'm glad you think it's cool, some people without an open mind consider these places "slums" or "dumps" and I want to show those people that is not true. Accidents do happen, though I think not around these areas. The people have been living here for decades, they know how to avoid the danger. The hits and deaths are more out in the countryside or outskirts of the city where there are no barriers or signs and people think they can pass in front of the train moving at high speed without consequence. I read somewhere that quite a lot of people die each year, but not really in the cities.

There aren't really any "high end" areas in Hanoi, just some places with modern high rises and tall office buildings. But the surrounding neighborhoods all still look much like the one in this video. Feed The Cory I left VN since 1988 and don’t even remember what my alley look like anymore it would be great to see it again. My alley called “Ngõ Muối” on Cầu Đất street, right beside a very famous bakery that make the most famous moon cake “Đông Phương” (your GF know for sure). I think you’ll find it very interesting.
From Hai Phong railway station and you go along the train track (way to Hanoi), there's a train street similar to this

It depends, but you can rent a whole 3 story house with 4 or 5 bedrooms for around $500~$700 a month. Maybe even bigger and for cheaper if you go further away from the city center.

Yeah! I think that one market in Thailand wins for craziest train street, though. The market moves back as the train arrives, the cars are literally passing right over fruits and veggies. Have you seen videos about that place? I also saw some crazy train videos in India. Those places make this train street in Hanoi look very tame. hehehe

I was curious about the crime out there, like in the States walking around an alley, near the tracks, generally isn’t the safest place for a leisurely stroll. It really looks so nice and peaceful there. You have inspired us to take a trip and are planning now, gonna go to Hanoi, can’t wait!
This is why I love Asia. It's not like in America where walking near tracks is considered dangerous and where you might get mugged, shot, stabbed, jumped, raped, killed, etc. I've lived in DC, Baltimore, Honolulu and I saw some seriously messed up places there and witnessed terrible crimes right in front of my eyes.
Vietnam is SUPER safe, the most you'd have to really worry about in Hanoi is being overcharged for stuff. In Saigon, though, purse and camera snatchings happen regularly. Very similar to crime in Rome, for example, except I think in Rome they got the pick-pocketing down. In Saigon it's just snatch and flee away on motorcycles. You'll be totally fine here in Hanoi, and even if you go to Saigon, as long as you just stay smart and aware of your belongings and surroundings.

Cafe here is so dangerous but very interesting
As long as tourists use common sense and follow the warnings the cafe owners and residents give, then it's OK. Some people are too caught up in trying to take the perfect picture, they don't move out of the way until the last moment. I've seen tourists do that a few times. The residents and cafe owners definitely yell for people to move out of the way.

I have been to the north train street. I did not know about the south side which does look to be not as wide as the north side. How far from the end of the bridge it the south side train street?
From Long Bien bridge? If you follow the tracks towards the north side of train street, from there it's maybe just a 15 minute walk south. You pass the Hanoi Railway Station as you go south, it's really close actually.

Yeah, daily wages in Vietnam are extremely low compared to other countries.
But locals live within their means, are very peaceful and friendly, and they take care of each other. ^^

The train tracks seems to be the most peaceful place in Hanoi. People just let their pets, dogs, cats, chickens and vegetables out in the train tracks without any supervision. I wonder what happens to the chickens who had sex on the train tracks on the north side train street. Did they die happy?
But that little alleyway at the end had so many activities and sights and sounds to behold. You can never get bored just by walking alone.

I Would Be Living in Southeast Asia Now But I Don't Like The Heat, Humidity, Rain, Pollution and High-Density Urban Living. But It's Nice to Visit and Live Vicariously Through Your Videos. Good Job!! You could come out this way but live in a smaller, more quiet kind of a place like Da Nang or Hoi An. You still get some city-like aspects, but it's much more relaxed and chill, and the countryside is very nearby. You'd still have to deal with the heat, rain and humidity, though. I Liked the Highlands around Dalat and Pleiku. Maybe you could Visit Some Mountain towns close to Hanoi sometimes in the Future. Like Sapa, Ha Giang and Ba Be. Gotta Laugh. Traveling in South East Asia About 50 Years ago made me realize that the Original People in most Asian Countries are a Dirty Little Secret Hidden Away in the Mountains Like the Montagnards in Vietnam. Hanoi is a more conservative city and there are no beaches nearby.
But you can still party here and meet people. I can't speak for Saigon, since I've never been there, but I hear a lot of other negative things about partying down there. I guess it's up to you.
