    post-reload update:
    i personally really prefer the atmosphere and character defining dungeon/combat design choices of fes. reload is more of a power trip. i will say, i do prefer reload's voice acting and the linked episodes outside of akihiko (not bad just expected more). the social life aspect is an overall improvement with the expansion of night activities; no complaints there. i go into more detail on this in my reload video so please go watch it if you haven't already! ua-cam.com/video/xzn1K5J_ODo/v-deo.html

      Fes would have to be reworked in terms of difficulty as it wasn't designed with it in mind, Any of the challenge it has would be nuked, And it already isn't that hard to begin with, Also Fes is fine the way it is as people blow the whole "Marin Karin" and "Junpei be dumb" crap out of the water

      There's actually a cheat code to enable party control for P3FES. You could even do it on original hardware (if you could input cheats). That combined with a bunch of community mods just makes me even more disappointing about the P3P news. I get why they didn't try to combine it though. PS2 games were apparently really hard to develop, and I guess they didn't want to emulate. But I would've loved a P3FES and P3P release. Let plays choose which one they wanna play. Even if they were separate releases.

      Honestly I don't think it's really an issue to not have controllable party members since the game was made with the idea of not having your party controllable, they wanted to give you a sense that your allies have a mind of their own and you'll have to be responsible as the leader, adding it won't completely ruin it., but I think it'll make the game less unique.

    Basically everything that was said is essentially what I would recommend. The enhanced versions are almost- of not always better than the originals, unless we're disputing slight atmospheric changes.
    Example of this would be: Persona 4's muddy, melancholy atmosphere, to Persona 4 Golden's still melancholic, with a more higher energy atmosphere.
    Persona 5's gritty, dark color choice and general on screen particle effects of metaverse and overworld, to Persona 5 Royal's more cleaned up, lighter color choice with different particle effects both on screen, in the Metaverse, and general lighting.
    Etc.

      I think Golden takes away some of the charm of Inaba. It's supposed to be in the middle of nowhere, yet a big city is only a scooter's ride away. And like you said, the lighting. I prefer the grayer, moodier vanilla over the oversaturated inaba of golden.

    19:22 I'm in the minority on this, but I actually found golden far more exploitable. You get to exploit it far faster than royal, and golden hands are far more common than treasure demons + exp cards make it far easier to overlevel in golden. It's also the only persona game where sticking to your initial persona is preferable.

    • @joeljames2683
      @joeljames2683 2 роки тому +43

      I know right. Whenever I got a new party member in that game, they would always end up being embarrassingly under leveled compared to my current ones. I think another factor is the fact that Persona 5 is better paced than Persona 4. Persona 5 makes it so that if you play through the dungeon as intended without intentionally avoiding combat entirely that you will be the appropriate level for the boss. There also aren't many ways to get the insane amounts of experience in as short a time as farming the golden hands in Persona 4. They even removed the exploit of the Reaper getting the status ailment in Royal.

      I would argue that the skill card system (and a little luck with the random skill morphs that can occur) can make orpheus the only persona you'll ever need in p3p as well. I say this because the last time I played it I had no intent of hanging onto orpheus and ended up using it all the way to the final boss out of pure convenience. The fact mitsuru gives you so many good things every exam period is supremely broken if you funnel it all into one place.

    • @mizzix
      @mizzix 2 роки тому +7

      @@Namingway248 persona 4 golden basically took the systems from persona 3 portable and updated them a bit so i agree. The fact that there is almost nothing to do at night on p3p also helps, cause you can just keep spamming the arcade to improve orpheus stats, add in the incense cards which you can buy and get from mitsuru after exams and you have max stats in no time.

    • @valumtimes
      @valumtimes 2 роки тому +17

      I think they're two different kinds of exploitable. P4G is a lot about grinding up existing personas via Shuffle Time chaining, while P5R is playing mad scientist via Fusion Alarm. The former takes patience; the latter requires cheeky boundary pushing. Both need you to have the kind of gambling addiction RPGs already foster in players. 😅

    • @insertnamehere658
      @insertnamehere658 2 роки тому +9

      @@valumtimes I think that's the best way of looking at it. My opinion is that P5R is less exploitable earlier on while P4G is exploitable right of the bat. By the end, sure, P5R is easier, but at that point, both Narukami and Joker do 90% of the damage, and can kill bosses in record time.
      Grinding in Golden was pretty fun though ngl. Amazing how they made grinding kinda fun. Although, I still prefer playing mad scientist in the velvet room, which I barely spent any time in, in Golden.

    The biggest issue with P3P that you said was a small issue is the visual novel style and it's not cause of the reading, it just ruins all emotional story moments and sometimes you don't even know what's going on. I liked P3's story much more when replaying it in FES since I played portable first. I liked P3's story in portable but I loved it in FES.

      Why would a visual novel style ruin the emotional bits? Have you perhaps never played Planetarium or White Album 2? Good spritework and a well composed soundtrack goes a long way in conveying emotion, and for what I've seen, P3P does a really good job at both these things.

      @@thegamerfe8751 I played FES, but never played Portable. As both a Persona fan and a visual novel enjoyer, I really don't see how one would feel less attached to one over the other. But maybe is because I enjoy visual novels, I don't know.

    • @thegamerfe8751
      @thegamerfe8751 2 роки тому +31

      @@MarceloZ2 I enjoy visual novels too, I played FGO (obviously I'm talking about the story, it's actually pretty good), Fate Stay Night (just look at my PFP lmao), Fate HA, Stein's Gate, Clannad and Danganronpa (just 1 and 2).
      I think the issue is that when Persona 3 was turned into a visual novel they didn't put any effort into translating it into a visual novel format, they just replaced the 3d environment with images + put the script in the text box and called it a day, after all the game doesn't even have any known feature from visual novels. Every other visual novel actually does stuff that aren't just the text box and the image you're looking at.
      + The way they turned the anime cutscenes into static images that don't even show everything made most of them confusing to understand for me.
      There's also the fact that with the sprites that show the faces of the characters the 3d models also have a form of facial expressions.
      And you gotta admit, at least in the case of Persona 3, the 3d + anime cutscenes definitely present the story miles better than the static images.
      I think more importantly, there are many details lost in the transformation from 3d to 2d. (Spoilers for whoever else is seeing this comment)
      Example: On December 31st when you Ryoji makes you choose, in P3P he transforms into something that looks like how his shadow form looked like in the movie (a blob that looks just a teeny tiny bit like Thanatos) however in FES he transforms into Thanatos and that detail is just lost for those who didn't play the game in 3d.
      There's also the ending, it's not animated in P3P, it just has the white sprite of SEES appear then disappear, in FES it actually scrolls down by chronological order + you have the anime cutscenes being replayed in the top right corner.
      And let's be real here, it's much more emotional seeing something actually happen then seeing an image (case and point, what happened to Shinji)
      Oh and just to let you know, Fate Extra exists on the PSP, that game is almost the same as far as the gameplay format is concerned (you have a school and a dungeon + some extra stuff) + it looks much better than P3P and is a 3d game. I still don't understand how Fate Extra can exist on the PSP but Persona 3 FES can't. Heck, it looks better than even FES. Other than size the PSP can probably run an optimized + compressed and worse looking version of FES at locked 30 FPS (the game runs at 60 on PS2) and I guess make The Answer a downloadable DLC to save space.

    6:20 You can switch it to be per turn in PS1 too. In combat go to Strategy > Battle Mode > Simple. In simple it will have everyone go through turns and then bring up input menu once everyone in combat moved. It still allows you to cancel it at any point if you feel things are getting hairy. You also don't need to reinsert commands. Just tweak order if you're aiming for a fusion spell.

    With Persona 1 I definitely lean more towards Japanese MIP/Revelations due to the presentational changes in the PSP and even though that mod (which I know the people who worked on it) is really cool and fixes the music, the sound design is honestly completely different and it doesn't feel right to someone like me who has been so used to the original. Also for Japanese players there is a weird presentational thing in the PsP version with the animated cutscenes only being subtitled and having no voices while the English version is fully dubbed. I thought that was extremely strange. With p2is one of the biggest advantages the PsP has over the original was scrapped from the western release with the dungeon builder and DLC quests being removed. I don't think there's any ongoing projects to restore that unfortunately, Western players really missed out with those DLC quests made by Satomi Tadashi

    I started Portable as my first P3 experience ad it just wasn’t hooking me. Which was surprising, as I do play a lot of VN and didn’t think I’d mind. It just felt like I was missing details. So I switched over to FES and everything clicked. The story seemed more clear (in portable for example I didn’t even realize Tartarus was at your school, somehow).
    Portable feels like a great way to do a 2nd playthrough to me. You’re less likely to miss details since you already know the story. Something about actually moving around the town in a 3D space just had me more invested.

    I'm usually for faithful remakes too... unless they're Pokemon BDSP. (But that's mostly because I thought the original DP could do with a lot of improvements)
    There are three versions of Persona 3. FES, Portable, and the one nobody plays because maxing all Social Links was somehow EVEN WORSE than FES.
    I definitely agree with you on reverse Social Links. They should still exist, just get rid of the jealousy system. It was even worse in FES because the male MC doesn't even have the option of platonic routes.
    I agree that part of the beauty of P3 is both versions (we don't talk about non-FES PS2) give very different experiences on what's broadly the same story.
    I never really thought of that before but yeah, Golden's additions were more substantial expansions on the formula than I thought. And on Golden being exploitable, well... sure, but P5R is MUCH worse in that regard.
    17:50 LolYosuke'sLevel.
    I'd say Golden is worth picking over PS2 just for Kanji and Naoto's moveset improvements along. (To a lesser extent Chie, who is now crit focused)
    And you have the same opinion on Royal I do. I love its new additions, like guns actually being good, Technical being a consistent way to fight enemies with no weaknesses instead of needing to rely on Lucky Punch and Akechi actually being a good character this time. The main downside though is how incredibly easy it is compared to vanilla P5.
    In Golden, you at least has to kind of go out of your way to grind Persona stats. In Royal, Special Treatment + Alarm or Ryuji Rank 7 + Jose Mementos Exp Boost is ALL you need to make the gameplay effortless. In my LP I've having to actively hold myself back and I still haven't Game Overed yet up to the 3rd Palace. The boss changes also make most of them significantly easier than the original, with the exception of Okumura. (Who's my favourite boss precisely BECAUSE it's a challenge) Merciless doesn't solve these issues, because tripling Technical damage actually makes a lot of fights EASIER.
    Anyway, great video as always.
    You got a review code! Nice.

      i usually always use yosuke in my party. i used magic based parties on my first two times playing persona 4 (yosuke, yukiko, and naoto). this time i went for a mostly physically built party (chie, yukiko, kanji). definitely better for taking down gold shadows, though quite a few bosses like to cock block you with their 50% pseudo-resistance.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy 2 роки тому +1

      I just tend to use everyone, rotating them around. But Chie is pretty good for gold hangs up until Naoto joins. (Then it's just Megidololon, gold hands have a huge pseudo-weakness to Almighty)
      At least this isn't Persona 4 Vanilla, where Tough Guy in the Shadow Kanji fight drained Physical. That fight got nerfed the hardest in Golden but I'm okay with it since the original was pretty bullcrap. (No weaknesses, they have Heat Riser) For Yukiko they gave her an Ice weakness but doubled her HP, and every other boss was untouched I'm pretty sure.

    12:02 That's exactly what I noticed from these people. They could very well be the same people who will hate the original book than the film based on the book because they rather watch the story rather than read through it, even though the film doesn't always make the best changes from the book. Another thing to note about a few more Portable changes which are actually pretty good. For one, there was an Inari shrine in FES where when you pray to it, anything can happen and it takes up the whole day. In Portable, the Inari shrine no longer does that, it's now used to make copies of skill cards and it doesn't take up time at all, but will take 5 in-game days, which is much more useful and convenient. Portable is the first game in the series to introduce this type of mechanic that you can do with skill cards and that since Portable, it's been carried over to all future Persona games. Persona 4 Golden would have it with with Marie and Persona 5 would have it with Yusuke. And the second nice addition is after the full moon operation with the Empress and Emperor, you unlock this whole new series of side quests where a person will end up lost in Tartarus and you have to go in to save them before the next full moon because if you don't, they will die, and on a few rare occasions, this will happen to your Social Links too and if you don't save them, not only will they die, but your Social Link with them will stop at its' current rank. This is personally one of my favorite additions in Portable because all it does is it gives us new things to do in Tartarus, it helps people plan their Tartarus trips better and we get extra rewards from it too. And speaking of which, one other difference between FES and Portable has to do with the 'tired/sick' mechanic. In FES, this is purely based on how much fighting you do in the Dark Hour, and because of this, you aren't able to do everything in one Tartarus trip like you can do in Persona 4 and 5, you have to take multiple trips in Tartarus in order to be able to do everything before the next full moon. In Portable, this was altered so that it's no longer based on stamina, but it's more based on strength and level where basically, you don't just get more and more tired just from defeating enemies regardless of what level they are, you only get really tired if you try to fight an enemy who's stronger than you and you're too low leveled. And one thing connected to this mechanic which I'm a little bit sad it's gone in Portable is the late night time period where you choose to either sleep early or study then sleep. Though, I can understand why they changed this because yeah, what's the point of having this risk choice if the tired mechanic has been changed up to be more based on strength and level than stamina and thus, you don't get tired as much?
    Also, If I want to talk about perhaps my biggest problem with Royal, which is the new story content basically feels like Persona 3 FES if The Answer were to be included in The Journey playthrough disguised as the new story content from Persona 4 Golden and that Metis were to actually appear in The Journey storyline, she has a Social Link and given as much screentime as possible, but barely given a part in the main story in terms of being a party member, even if there is one part in the story where you want her to be there as a party member, the game will basically force the characters to not let her join because the people at Atlus are worried about the hardcore Persona fans who expects everything about the main story to be the same and if they see one slight change or addition, they'll get mad over it, and it's only until The Answer where Metis actually becomes relevant to the story and become a full on party member. That is pretty much what Persona 5 Royal feels like in terms of new story content as a whole.

    I wish there was a way to combine that difficulty of Persona 5 into Royal. Royal is fantastic on every front and the grapple hook does so much in so little time. But that difficulty is stupid easy compared to what P5 original had.
    My main grapples are the gun and the showtime mechanic, in P5 original I enjoyed how they force a limit. If you wanted to use bullets you saved them for the enemy's you knew could take them hard because they could easily kill anything. In Royal I found myself just spamming the gun alot more often.
    With Showtime while an amazing mechanic that's fun, it always came out anytime I was about to either destroy an enemy or about to lose to an enemy. It was honestly more of a blue eyes white dragon of getting out of situations or dunking on them.

    I only half agree on the removal of the jealousy system. its critiques are overblown, given how much time/hang with other girl sessions it takes (60 days, subtract 15 off the counter if you spend time with another girl (Maiko and Aigis excluded)), and it is much more accurate to what a real relationship would be like, especially among teenagers. I would address it in several potential ways:
    1. Ideally, MC should get friendzone routes. This is a given because I still haven't done the 4 other girls because I don't want to cheat on Chihiro, however you can add a gameplay benefit to it too: The Jealousy Mechanic only comes into play if you choose to enter a romantic relationship with the girl. This provides a more rewarding Social Link and more experiences with the girl (that'd be added in a hypothetical P3 Remake), while the Friendzone route provides easier completion with the removal of Jealousy.
    2. Change the amount of days removed based on the girl's personality. Someone who (seems) easy-going like Yuko would remove only 10 days off the counter making her more lenient, while someone more prone to jealousy like Chihiro would remove 20. This adds more personality through gameplay and adds more strategy to planning your social links. You could have some sort of indicator of this (Jealousy Type or something like that) in the Social Link menu.
    3. The Tokimeki Memorial approach: Just add the menu indicator in the SL Menu so a player can see how a girl might be feeling, then you can plan on hanging with her to diffuse her if she's getting close to going off.

    Personally, when I know a bit too much about an SMT/Persona game, I personally like to add mods that make my playthrough more comfortbale (like SMT5V's old styled buffs or extra personas) just want to enjoy it as such in general

    Persona 3 FES, easy choice for me.
    Disregarding that I'm still only on my first playthrough for it, I don't really see what modding could really offer me for Persona 3 FES; I think it looks fine, I play Ocarina of Time regularly enough to not feel violated by the existence of older 3D rendering.
    Tactics commands... my only real issue is not having access to most of the commands until the second half of The Journey; I very much enjoy the feeling that the other party members are autonomous and not simply just a third, fourth, fifth arm for me to have direct control over, and learning how to work around particular party compositions is very enjoyable for me. Knowing how the party members are programmed to behave probably helps with this as I can scan a boss - not get any affinity reads for myself - and then watch what the rest of my party does to try and discern the boss' affinities, for example.
    I've only briefly touched The Answer because I do kind of want to finish The Journey before I commit a full playthrough to The Answer, but the brief no-save run I did of The Answer felt like a high-lights reel of *almost* everything I came to Person 3 FES for in the first place (if you exclude me rushing half an hour of constant cutscenes because I want to enjoy the story on the full playthrough).
    I actually made it to the first boss in The Answer and came close to cracking it before running out of resources (I went in on next to no SP against my better judgement because it was a throw-away run).
    Have to say though, I don't know that I could do P3P because I *really* like using ranged weapons to better gain the advantage in battle, which is another point towards enjoying The Answer because Aigis' guns generally feel like snappier bows with better telegraphed ranged when roaming out of battle.

    edit: i did not mean to make this comment so long lol

    The most convenient, affordable, visually speaking, is going to be the Xbox series version on game pass.
    It's just great to enjoy almost every persona game on Xbox, through Xbox 360 backwards compatible or remastered version on game pass.
    Everyone using game pass should try them out. I think x cloud could be perfect for this game, as persona na games are generally not affected by latency. Play on smart phone on the go is going to be great.

    As far as P3 goes I don’t know that I could say Portable is the definitive version like some people think, when it has no overworld. I still maintain that to fully experience P3, you have to play FES as the male MC (controllable party mod if you want to make it easier) and then play Portable as the female MC.

I played multiple VNs before (Fate Stay Night and Hollow Ataraxia, Stein's Gate, DDLC, Amagami ebKore, all of Danganronpa and Clannad), since all of them were made as being VNs the creators managed to make everything work perfectly but because P3P is originally a 3d game with 3d cutscenes and anime cutscenes there was no effort put into changing it into a VN, they just removed all cutscenes and changed it into pictures without adding the stuff needed to make a story in VN format work and that hurt the story experience.
      I played P3P first then FES and I found myself enjoying the game's story much more in FES.

    I played Persona 1 (SEBEC and SQQ) a couple months ago on the PSP and really enjoyed it. Then, I decided to play a bit of the Japanese PS1 version last week - using a script and Google translate - and found myself enjoying the music and atmosphere a lot more. The only downsides were that I had to have the script open at all times and that I couldn’t skip battle animations.
    To anyone dissatisfied with the PSP version, maybe try playing Megami Ibunroku with a script. It might be slower, but I found myself more immersed compared to the PSP version, and I haven’t even beaten Ibunroku

    Persona 5 is such an special case for me. I played P5 3 times. One on my PS3, then one month later on my new Ps4 at the time (paid twice for the full price game), and then again before I had money for the royal (which I've got on a deal on PSN). I have P5 physical nowadays but I don't have P5R because it's a pain to find a copy here. Anyways, by playing P5 and essentially starting P5R right away I caught so, fucking, many, differences. It's insane, so much so that I really wish someone did an in-depth features and changes from versions, not only in big mechanics because they changed every single small thing you can immagine.
    That being said, P5 actually holds itself off real good, if you give someone who never played Persona 5, the original game today, they will still feel it's a finished game. It's absurdly polished, and yes, the chances you have to break the game only happens end game, P5R adds stuff that breaks the game before the third dungeon if you ignore DLC. And since you have all the OG DLC, you know what happens. I'm still annoyed with the female Orpheus DLC where she's like, level 11, and has Neo Cadenza, which heals 50% + All of the Kaja spells in one for all party, that's like a super Heat-Rizer for all your party right in front of you from Kamoshida's palace. That's insane.
    There are a lot of smaller changes and big changes, and Royal succeed in making you not wanting to play P5, just because it fixes the smaller things that annoyed everyone in the long run, changed certain dungeons to have less padding, cut short win battle animations so you have to click only once to see all your spoils, and so on and so on.
    Even so, if I ever get to a situation where I can't play P5R and can only play P5, I will be able to play it without being absurdly annoyed by it, because overall, the game is very well done. After all, it took them almost ten years to make it. P3 AND P4 are not that... easy, to play the og versions. P4 is harder than P4G, true, but overall P4G feels more complete. P4 lacks something, and it's simple: It lacks freedom. P5 may force you to sleep way too much, I agree, but you still can play 80% of the callendar day and night no problem.
    Also, just for you to have a sense of scope, if you ever play P5, try NOT using the fast travel mechanics for two or three days in-game, and you'll see how absurdly well done it is. It's so easy to get lost, they suceed into making shibuya the labyrinth it truly is.
    Anyway, I agree with you too. To me, P3P is only worth if you play FemC. If your first time playing Persona 3, you should play FES. The 2D graphics removes some of the charm Iwatodai has. P3P adds a lot of good features, but I'm still wondering why they added quick travel there if it's so damn fast to travel between screens when you're just a flloating dot.
    And in deffence of every single one who hates the Visual Novel, I am a great lover of Visual Novels, and PErsona 3 Script was NOT adapted to a Visual Novel format.
    This means a certain character dies for another in Persona 3 Portable and the script tells the scene as if you're watching the 3D models doing their shit, they never go in-depth describing what's happening and since they didn't draw any new cutscenes for these moments, you will be seeing Tartarus'front door a lot, while sprites come and go with their EXPRESSIVENESS during emootional scenes. To this day I still wonder, how they wanted me to feel bad when a party member goes away when they didnt bother to describe the scenes correctly since most of them lacks CGs anyways. P3Fes however made me care for those characters, and know that I had a PSP when I discovered Persona 3, so I played the PSP first. And frankly as much as we have a lot of good gameplay changes in portable, Portable really forgets to remember people may have not played P3 or P3F, because it expects you to know how the scenes actually play so you can have some sort of emotion being triggered in your brain. Really.
    Spoilers: When Jumpei sees Shidori survived in Portable, it felt meh for me, once I watched the same scene on FES, I understood what happened in full. I dunno why, but frankly, Portable just don't explain shit, and remember: I play a shit ton Visual Novels, if you lack a CG or a 2D specific image to tell a scene, you need to explain every, single, piece of information the protagonist sees. And P3 scrip tells that thinking you're seeing what he's seeing on a 3D envrioment, externalized of him. While P3P should be telling the same events from a first person perspective, not an externalized version of that like P3F and P3 does.

      "because it expects you to know the scenes actually play so you have some sort of emotion being triggered in your brain"
      Me who cried during a certain someone's death while playing the game completely blind: ok
      I respectful disagree with portable not explaining shit too. I understood everything perfectly and i quite honestly fail to see how someone wouldn't unless they're just spamming x to go through the text(i also had no experience with visual novels up to that point so i don't see how you couldn't understand it while having more experience with the genre). The presentantion being worse than fes is a fact, but to say that you can't understand what is happening is a huge stretch.

      I know, I just started playing P3P and it's way more different than P3F was to the original P3. I understand now why P3P is seen as the remake by Atlus. I can only imagine how much different P4G will be, let alone P5R.

    Honestly, one reason why I prefer the re-release and not the originals is because most of the time, I can only play them with the console I currently have. Like with Persona 3 or 4, I only had the PSP and PSVita at the time so I couldn't play them on the PS2 and PS3 respectively. The only exception is Persona 5, which I played first on the PS3, but moved to the Switch when I got it because I prefer handhelds. (It's also the main reason I got the Switch TBH)
