I remember reading that the reason why Femc is a thing is because they were surprised how popular Persona 3 was among women, so they decided to add an alternate route for them in Portable. It's pretty interesting!
You'd be surprised how much female gamers enjoy visual novel type games. Well. Actually it's pretty obvious. Female targeted genres are like that (otome games etc etc)
@@htsunmiku if only otome games was a proper long-running series, than a stupid gacha mobile app game with ridiculous microtransactions for cheap quality premiums...
@@Evil_Beauty console & PC otomes is where it's at, but they're still a lot money to buy 💀 (well... unless you don't mind finding alternative ways) But either way you'll probably save more money then the shitty mobile games.
@@htsunmiku It's funny, I don't actually play otome games (mainly because there aren't any serious ones that I can get into that are worth buying and investing my time on). But I would LOVE to play them if they actually made a proper series that have H scenes more commonplace here in the west. 🤤 But alas, Japan never release the good rated R stuff out here in the west. If they did, it'll probably get censored and watered-down. God damnit Japan, why you gotta keep the good stuff to yourself? P.S. I honestly don't mind wasting money on those games, regardless of how expensive they are as long as the quality content is worth it. And the mobile games are DEFINITELY not worth it.
And is absolutely not true. No way this statistic is right when, for example, 95% of steam users are male, lol. Though maybe this is for Japan only? His own analytics say that 10% of players are female and this sounds like true.
There are actually sayings in Japan like "college is the spring break of life" and "You can only play while you're still in university." It's seen as relief between stressing out about entrance exams as a high schools and the soul crushing work of being an adult. Tbh, I'm not sure why there more anime and games centered college students in games. I assumed is because high school is the more universal experience?
College is just such a unique setting as well and you can do more with it as a game since the characters are struggling between their youth and adulthood which means more themes to explore, I totally agree w u
@@Queenofskill High school is where most start dating so its a good setting to have for romance stories. I mean you can have college romances but most college students are experienced and most romance anime are “first time” romances
@@revolvingworld2676 True,! From where I live everyone finds more enjoyment in dating as a young adult tho, and you can have a lot more themes explored around romance in adulthood whereas in adolescence it's a bit more limited, but still ur point is totally valid and I agree!
I think high school for Persona specifically is chosen for, while also for the universal experience as you said, is the liminal point for a lot of Japanese people. Especially considering the new games take place in second year, the middle of your high school years and where you sort of start to get an idea on where you're about to aim or end up once you reach adulthood in a year or so. Here the whole idea is to quite literally improve and level up your skills so you're prepared for the next phase of life (if I'm remembering, you only kind of get one shot for a career as soon as you finish high school) , which is an ideal environment for a story based within the Fool's Journey. College, as others have said, is kind of a break from that, is more casual and less stressful by comparison since the big decisions have already been made. Can have many interesting stories within that time period, but admittedly the high school setting, the way it is anyways, is better suited for the stories Persona tells nowadays.
It feels to me like the likes and dislikes in japan align fairly well with cultural expectations. Ryuji is introduced as "vulgar boy", he dyes his hair blonde and has very little respect for his elders. Kanji also Bleeches his hair, like rebellious youths often do in japan. Meanwhile Makoto is studying alot and caring about her future, her older sister, her dad, and the collective she is responsible for taking care of - the student body. This makes her very popular.
It's odd considering what the game is like, about shitty adults in Japanese society. You'd think the players would agree with that statement about their antiquated status quo and would be sympathetic to ryuji
Ryuji does respect his elders, in the mementos quest about scammers that target old people he voices how annoyed he is about them, he just hates shitty adults, those who don't treat minors with respect and use their age as a form of authority.
@@thatitalianlameguy2235 Interesting point. It could imply that people didnt take the point to heart. I suppose even if they did, it may be to late. Relationships are tricky - its not like you completly reevaluate a person if you change your view on some things.
@@phelps6205 That may be true in theory. If that is the rule we still see more exceptions then confirmations. His first scene he is dissing a teacher. Then he gets angry at police officers who question his true but absurd story. We are also told pretty quickly by our teacher to stay away from him. Thats his relationship with adults in his introduction. If Most adults he meets fall in to the shitty adults category and his respect in fact needs to be earned, then he is not one who accepts his place in the order of things. He is rarley shown respecting adults and more often shown being brash towards them. If such things are important to you it could make you dislike him, I think.
Considering how both Ryuji and Kanji are low i’m pretty sure it has to do with how blond people in Japan usually have a negative stigma surrounding them (as they’re often seen as criminals/crooks) which unfortunately would explain why they’re so low.
@@Windermed Japan doesn't like anything TOO western-like. Which is the same reason why Anne ranked so low, because she's a gaijin. Ryuji's reason was more inclined to him being vulgar and annoyingly cringe as a character that didn't resonate much with the Japanese fanbase. P.S. Fun trivial fact: According to the official P5 artbook, Ryuji's hair color was originally supposed to be black, not blonde. Same thing with Futaba. Both characters dyed their hair color as sort of western fad.
Man I forgot that social media can be an echo chamber because "Western fans are indifferent towards Shinjiro" is the polar opposite of my experience 😭😭
Yes P3 is best. P4 has terrible message and awful characters and P5 has awful story and okay characters. P3 is the only one where the story and characters are great. (All my opinion, of course)
I am a Ryuji stan… this Ryuji hate just upsets me, dude has your back from the very beginning. And the scene they added in Royal of him jumping in front of joker and akechi to block an attack from possessed Sumire really shows how much he cares by putting himself in danger just like his fake out death in shidos palace
he also treats Ann super weird, basically harassing her any chance he gets. he is extremely loud and had created lots of unfavorable situations for phantom thieves almost revealing their identities. he was unnecessarily mean to morgana and in the end couldn't even properly apologize to him. and there are still plenty of other reasons as to why people wouldn't like ryuji
@@glorifieddustcollector Yeah, it always bugged me how Ryuji was the butt monkey of the group, being the only one to cause them unnecessary trouble during infiltrations.
@@glorifieddustcollector He literally never harasses her, she trusts him, so much to the point that she's happy to sleep in the same room as him. Also, that's shown to be enthusiasm and the fact that he doesn't really think about what he says, also, Morgana took PLENTY of potshots at Ryuji, it was banter.
I've heard college in Japan is actually pretty breezy. The last year of high school is known as "exam hell", but once you get a high enough score to get into a top college or university, you're basically set for life. The top companies recruit out of those, simply BEING at one is enough to be on their radar. (This explains why Makoto was willing to go so far for a college recommendation) Protagonists winning Japanese polls is not exclusive to Persona, the Fire Emblem protags tend to score really high in their polls too, as does Rean in Trails of Cold Steel. Blank slate self-inserts seem to do really well over there. The P3 polls are interesting, as there was a lot more variance between then than P4. I'm also one who likes Q1 more than Q2. Q2 does do some thing better, but I think it did some worse than 1. "Joker and Akechi ended up ranking closely" - [Akechi with literally more than double Joker's votes]
Yeah the college years are much easier than high school in Japan... well... except for the last year where you're doing all your "Shushoku Katsudo" with some major company 😅
im honestly shocked that ryuji polled higher than morgana, even by a hair. given the japanese audiences' bizarre and inexplicable hateboner (or at the _very least,_ aggressive disinterest) for our best boy, i was positive he'd come dead last doubly so that he polled higher than _haru._ like, yeah yeah i know, _screen time lol_ but even if you dont give a toss about haru as a character, she's still adorable. i woulda thought for sure that being a cute anime girl would automatically give her the edge over ryuji for japanese audiences but, fine by me mate. us ryuji truthers will take our wins where we can get them
@@TobiTheNomad I’d say it’s cause of how weird he was acting toward Morgana he was fine until he unnecessarily started causing problems in the group and being obsessed with fame and wanting to reveal himself to the world
I love Haru. All the P5 characters get thrown into the shit heap plotwise, but Haru having to flip on a dime between grieving her murdered father and leading his company, plus that a-hole fiance still hanging around? Haru's strength is amazing.
@jaccetaylor3672 Yeah, while I played the MC as not really caring about any of the fame, so Ryuji's attitude and mistreatment of Morgana stuck out like a sore thumb. Otherwise, I saw poor Ryuji as the butt of everyone else's jokes.
Of course. Makato is everyone’s Queen. It only makes sense. NGL at first brush with her character I was certain I wasn’t gonna like her. Seriously tho, she stole the show.
I wonder how many women play Persona over here in the west? As a girl myself who plays over here, I've actually known a similarly 50/50 split of players
I can’t even find a persona fan myself, but are you talking about real life people that likes persona you meet irl, or people on internet? In the internet, most of them are male but irl, I’ve never seen one and I’ve never heard of it, but a while ago in this year my friend told me that he has a friend that is on persona 5 but he is male aswell.
@@yellowandlimegrat4724 Akechi was a pretty cool confidant and yosuke is the bro who we have the most "bro time". Either way I am male and I discovered persona by seeing 3 people talking about it and they were 2 females and 1 male
Makoto Yuki is probably the best representative to have established the Persona series' popularity better than anyone. And probably even more so if he was alive and dancing. Whoops! 💀
Well when P5 came out, i was 26, but now I'm 33 and yeah. I still play video games, and Persona and SMT titles in particular. Just because you get older, you don't stop pursuing your hobbies. (Except if you have kids, but yeah, no thank you.) Also, i show up in your analytics as male, but I'm actually a woman. I don't like telling google I'm a woman though, because then i get targetted ads for baby shit and perfume and kitchen appliances (yes, really). So i switched my gender to male on all social media platforms and lo and behold - no more cringe female coded ad content. This is a well-known "hack" among women, especially childfree women, and since many of us are gamers as well, i bet your actual male-female audience ratio is more even than it looks. Also, from experience: yes, the highschool setting is/can be relaxing and cathartic. Especially for those of us who spent their school years getting bullied and maybe even had a shitty home life on top of that. It's just. Such a nice fantasy to be in school again and have actual friends and hang out with them and build relationships with them and have them actually like you. (Of course just the MC but it's just... wish fulfillment and comforting fantasy for me, personally.)
For me it's the opposite. I always believe that high school stories are supposed to be relatable and freak out because I didn't date nearly as much in high school.
Speaking as a trans woman, I haven't really noticed any baby stuff or kitchen appliances (well, I suppose I have gotten a lot of ads for the same airfrier). It's tampons I notice the most
Something to keep in mind about the 'first game played' poll, is it's just that. The first game they played is just how they are introduced to the series, so it makes sense that something like FES would be less than Persona 3, given how chances are people would have picked up the original first, or waited for for the more accessible PSP. Same with how Persona 1 got high on the list too, people started with that one and became fans of the series, and why Eternal Punishment being so low down, given how people who buy it are likely buying it to see what's going on after Innocent Sin's ending
Female viewer here to bump up your numbers! With the high number of female voters and high rank of female characters, it would have been interesting to see the gender breakup. Waifuism woula account for a good deal of it, but I wonder if some of them just really struck a chord with female Japanese gamers. It’s fascinating to see that Yukiko was better recieved over there, considering Chie tends to be the most popular p4 girl over here, while I always see Yukiko getting dunked on
Yukiko struggles with her role in her family business, so maybe Japanese see that as more relatable? American girls might like that Chie is affirmed as a tomboy. I dunno, I love both of them, and their friendship is solid. ❤
yukiki is your average very feminine girl next door which definitely fits the traditional gender roles and collectivist culture of Japan, whereas Chie is more untraditional in her femininity and is really individualistic in her presentation and hobby (wont see a lot of japanese girls looking like Chie with a deep interest with kung fu in japan ) which fits more with our progressive and individualistic societies in the West. Which aligns with my own preference since I found Chie to be way funnier and memorable than Yukiko because of her personnality and humor.
The Shinjiro #8 upset was due to his social link with FEMC in P3P. It’s the best romance option (in my opinion) and pulls at the heartstrings. I’m happy to see the Shinjiro love ❤
I'm glad this video exists, tbh I'm kinda getting tired of people(especially on Twitter) always acting salty about the Character Polls because their favorite waifu didn't get the top spot. Western Persona fans often forget that other people have different opinions than them, especially people in entirety different countries, just because you or other people like a character doesn't mean that other people will, nor does it mean that they *have* to like that character.
Yeah, but we don't care about their opinions. We only care about our own opinions and like-minded individuals who share the same taste. What good does having people with differing opinions ever achieved other than cause division and discourse amongst the fanDUMB? Absolutely nothing. Therefore, stating this silly,"...but oh, othr ppl have difrt opinons hurr hurr hurr". Yeah, nobody cares. If you don't share the same opinion as me. BYEEE! Us stating the obvious about difference in opinions doesn't get us anywhere.
@@Evil_Beauty This is the most close minded and ignorant statement ive ever heard. At first I thought you were bieng ironic or sarcastic but you are actually serious.
@@revolvingworld2676 I don't see anything ignorant about it. Other the fact that I don't know why any sane person would stand there and pretend to care, let alone agree what the other individual have to say when they know that they are ALWAYS gonna favor their OWN opinion over yours at the end of the day. When people wank their opinions in my face, I do what every japanese person does in their country and pretend to flatter them with compliments when in my mind, I couldn't give a rat's a** about it, as I roll my eyes a million times over hoping they would just shut up about their opinions already. Seems like an effective strategy the japanese fandom tend to use every time they confront people with such sensitive topics. If you were to tell japanese what country, or ethnic people they hate the most, they would do everything to avoid the topic and not give you an honest, straightforward opinionated response. But deep down, they KNOW what their stance is.
People just get older, but are still fans of the series. I played Persona 3 on PS2 as a teenager and have played all Persona games since. Now I am in my early 30s.
Weibo poll results are really interesting. Seeing how huge Hoyoverse is becoming, I wonder if we'll see more of the kind of archetypes that are ranking highest in Persona polls 🤔 P3D getting any votes is freakin blessed!
What I get from this video is that P3 is really liked in Japan (honestly it's basically the same in the west, P3 fanbase here is just a little bit more quiet compared to P4 & P5) and that Aigis is mostly the most popular P3 girl if we don't count Kotone/FeMC so I'm glad.
Regarding the Persona Q2 character popularity poll: A second protagonist was getting a lion's share of the P3 fans' votes. It probably put the rest of P3's cast at a disadvantage, as the other casts only had one protagonist to compete against for their fans' votes.
I was actually pretty happy to See Shinji make it into the top 10 on the PQ2 poll, he’s probably my favorite character from Persona 3. Though it hurt to see that Naoto wasn’t top 4 in the smaller polls, and top 10 in the large poll. But I’ll take 11th for sure. But I can definitely agree that the Japanese and Asian fan base has generally better opinions/takes on the games. The western fan base makes me want to hurt myself sometimes.
I find it funny HS culture is so idealized in Japan, even though when you hear from Japanese people about their HS experience it's often just as strict & brutal as work culture. Strict demand for studying, placement exams & grades to get into a top college & get a high paying job, a bunch of traditional & conservative rules restricting nearly everything you do (including dating), a ton of pressure to join clubs & study groups (if not just required), otherwise you aren't seen as driven enough & won't get into good schools, etc etc etc Seems like people are expected to not have a life besides school & studying, as it's basically work culture to get you used to future work culture 😂
Also posting grades publicly for all to see is horrifying if you grade low. I guess to enforce other students in policing each other to study or be humiliated. Can only imagine that those who start to fall behind just give up.
Fes had two versions in Japan from my understanding. One of them was a brand new game, and the other was just a disc that modified your P3 disc, so it makes sense why people would say P3 over Fes.
As far as I remember, there was an FES game in Japan, it was just that the Answer was also able to be bought seperately and just be added as an add on to the original P3.
The reason why Persona 3-FES was less the starting point for players in Japan than Persona 3 is easily explained. While in the west Persona 3-FES was released as a full game on a single disc, in Japan they released FES as an Add-On Disc (today it would be DLC) to Persona 3. That means, to play P3-FES in Japan, you needed to have a copy of P3, or else you couldn't play it. I bought the FES disc in Japan while I was there on holiday, and the shopkeeper warned me that I would not be able to play it without the original game, that's the reason I know this. XD
The main problem with Haru is you get her so late in the game that it is difficult forming an attachment to her. Heck, you can't even start her confidant until pretty much the last month of the game. As for voting the protagonist first in everything, I wouldn't even have them on the list as an option myself. They tend to just be player surrogates and not characters unto themselves... weird that Asia rates them so highly. To me voting the protag first is like voting the music slider in the config menu your favorite game feature.
can confirm, im in my early 30's and my first Atlus game ever was Persona 4 Golden when it first released on steam. I am also surprised by the age demographics here but if i can speak from personal experience i think the reason is because older people my age tend to be tired of hyper competitive multiplayer games or even single player games that significantly raise one's stress level and blood pressure. Like bro I have too much responsibility and stuff to worry about than to spend playing 100 hours game time just to 'git gud' enough at Dead Cells so that I can experience the real end game final boss. Not to mention getting unironically mad af and swearing at my monitor is cringe and pathetic as a grown ass man. These days I play simple game that are simple, story driven, and relaxing. I AM TRYING TO HAVE FUN, not be tensed up and anxiety ridden over my K/D ratio. Its really comes down to each individual personality, but thats my theory why people in their 30's are the 2nd largest demographic.
I'm in my early 30s and my first Atlus game was SMT nocturne on ps2 I then played DDS 1 and 2 then persona 3 fes I still haven't played persona 4 or 5 yet
yeah life circumstances and personality is what makes us enjoy or dislike certain gaming experiences more than others. I wish people would see that more instead of saying a game/genre is shit
About the age it's no wonder, man. For example I like Persona 3 since I'm a high schooler and been a fan of Persona ever since. And more Persona game come out as we all got older. When I finally get to play Persona 5, I was already in between 20-29 age range. And by now I passed to the 30-39 range. So the older fans could be just a player since old Persona. Too bad the mainline game only came out like once in every who knows how many years 😂 we haven't even know when will Persona 6 get released
I dont know why most people are surprised with the age difference. If you played P3 (even P2) when it released theres a good chance your in your late 20s to early 30s
I am female and will be 50 this year and I have played both versions of 5 and also 4 Golden, not 3 though. In 5 Royal I have over 500 hours all in game and ps trophies, still got a couple left to get in 4. Truthfully on the rankings, Makoto is one of my least favorite characters 🤷♀️
The thing that shocks me the most about the thumbnail is that they had this perfectly normal surprised sprite of Ann that they could’ve used, but instead chose the “I’ll steal your soul” surprised face
who would think that Teenagers would be the Main Crowd for a Persona Game? 1. Teenagers mostly don´t play RPGs, 2. Teenagers don´t play turn-based Games.
Your videos always make me want to go back to my p5royal playthrough. I was halfway thru when I switched consoles and couldn’t transport the save data so I had to start over.
I am shocked Kanji was so low. He was my favourite character in Persona 4 and quite possibly my favourite persona character of all time. His character arc and social link are some of the best that I have personally experienced in the series although granted I’m waiting for Reloaded to play 3
Yeah, it's because Atlus completely misrepresents the games in these polls by ignoring various aspects of the additional content these games add. They do this a lot and it's incredibly annoying especially since the P3 PV01 trailer has a ton of requests on it including... 1. Please bring this game to switch 2. Please bring Hamuko. 3. Please bring Episode Aigis. It's an issue I think videos like this have it takes numbers based on unknown sample sizes and assumes bigger numbers mean better responses when that's not the case at all. E.G: FES isn't poorly received at all for it's story or gameplay, it just doesn't core highly because a lot of Japanese fans haven't played it as is the case with Persona Q2.
Keep in mind with the poll around the 4:30 mark that it’s specifically referring to the FIRST Persona game people played. I’d imagine people who started the series with 3 or 4, and definitely 5 would probably be more likely to play the PSP version of Persona AFTER their first game. Knowing what they started with is interesting, but I would be interesting in seeing which version everyone played. Those who started with Persona 1 in the first decision are mostly probably those lifelong fans.
I imagine Fuuka is so low because she has almost no story relevance. All the other girls have a story arc of some significance. She also doesn't really fit the theme of the game that well, where everyone lost someone. If I'm not mistaken, she is the only party member who didn't have to experience the death of a loved one. Rise and Futaba, despite also being analyzers, are much more prevalent in the story. Risu is the main love interest, and Futaba is the daughter of your guardian. Fuuka has nothing. She's just the voice that you hear in tartarus.
I love how you consider the perspective of the east. Us westerners keep hogging the spotlight with our viewpoints and ideas, often times without knowing or caring that we do. It's interesting to see the contrasts.
KInda Shocked that Joker ranked lower than FeMC, Narukami Yuu, and Yuuki Makoto. Though I think with how vanilla Makoto is it's easier to "Self-insert" than Joker, who you can kinda tell is pretty suave, especially when he becomes a phantom thief. He kinda has a noticeable attitude.
Seeing the general demographics, that still makes me think we could use a game similar to Eternal Punishment in terms of cast age. I believe that a game with a central cast of people ages 18-25 who are just coming into the workforce/continuing on to college. Something with the message along the lines of “Yeah, growing older is hard, but the friends we make in adulthood (and the ones we maintain from our schooling years) make adulthood a bit easier.” Something optimistic for the future, but I probably am in a minority in this one. Also not surprised Shinjiro kinda sits low on popularity polls, character who shows up for short amount of time and 90% of his character development is in Kotone’s route. Also dies about as quickly as he’s introduced. (He’s still #1 in my heart dammit). That Q2 poll was a big W for Shinjiro (also 669? Nice.)
I was already more interested in watching a cast of characters that are just young adults before, but now that I myself am an adult and in college, I would love to get some more media I can see myself in
In case anyone is interested, Atlus Asia(Facebook) is mainly the Trad. Chinese fanbase, which included Hong Kong players and Taiwanese players, probably some Macau players but I've never met one. Atlus Asia(Weibo) is just China (not HK, and definitely not Taiwan) and China only.
Probably because it's a niche game, not because it's bad in fact I think it's one of the best spin offs in the series right there with strikers but you need someone that enjoys both persona(a turn based rpg) and fighting games. I'm like the perfect demographic because I really really like both genres but this is quite rare
I have heard that Kanji was much well received in the west than the East and boy did it show...Kanji is easily top 3 party member in persona 4 in terms of personality. Ryuji gets a lot of hate in both sides of the pond but I feel like he'd still do better in the west than the east.
A UA-camr named fither did a video ranking the most popular persona characters about a year ago. He collected about 10,000 votes. Ryuji was ninth and kanji was first.
i can't believe morgana and teddy weren't always at the bottom of every list, it must be a crime that they could climb one more position pd: btw, seeing ryuji so low makes me understand better why so many japanese loved the scene of him being beaten up by girls
I find Morgana inoffensive. I don't love him, but I don't hate him either. Teddie... is actually incredible in P4 in his better moments, but he's HORRIBLE in spinoffs. (Where they take all his negative traits, none of his positive ones, and dial them up to 1000)
A quick note about persona in regards to Sony systems. Persona 5, atleast in the states, was considered an M rated game. This is an important detail because gamers who were not using adult based accounts on playstation systems, COULD NOT get persona 5 to play. The system, here in the us atleast, AGE BLOCKS people with kid accounts, even if they became adults, from playing the game at all. My sister was given permission by her familly to play the game and The playstation did not care. There was also no parental control that unlocked the feature either. Then when she tried a few years later, now an adult... it still blocked her. Mom had to jump through dozens of hoops to get my Sis's account changed from kid to adult, and boy that was a nightmare. I dont know if the same thing happened in other countries, but I feel like its an important detail concerning the Ages of the players within the surveys.
LMFAO! 😂 Must suck to be born in that one western lame family who monitors everything you do as if you're still a toddler learning about the world that many others have already been exposed to. When I was young I was exposed to violence, sexual nudity, and graphic imagery at an early age ALL THE TIME that my parents didn't even bother for such things.
I played persona 4 when I was about 22, Persona 5 when I was 27 and royal when I was 30 and I am 32 now so mostly the age thing is fans of the series just getting older. If persona 6 comes out in the next 2-3 years as it might happen will play that too.
1341 is not a small sample size by any means. That's a margin of error of only 3%. Fun fact, the industry minimum for statisticians is 35 people, which has a MoE of 17%.
Doesn't surprise me that Persona 3 was held in higher regard with JP. It's the game that made Persona a solid series to follow. It also didn't surprise me that the fans of P3 were mostly for older age brackets. If you look at those Japanese Persona 3 music concerts from the 2000s that are still online here, those weren't teenie boppers in the audience.
jumpei and fuuka are my favorite and second favorite characters in p3 so it's sad too see them lose but while i get why jumpei isn't popular in japan i wonder why fuuka isn't? she similar too futaba who's really popular in japan . this is not me being salty i'm just curious fi there is a reason for her ranking low.
@@szczepan4737 i should rewatch the video but if i remember correctly the more bubbly characters like yosuke, ann and futaba do score pretty high idk if i would use the word moe for them though but i might just have the wrong idea of what moe is even though I'm a massive anime fan i don't have much experience with moe culture . i think your right though it probably also doesn't help that those two don't appear much in spin offs it's most of the time mitsuru, eagis, akihiko or elizabeth.
The fact Yukiko is dead last in the overall poll hurts my heart. Especially since shes my favorite girl in all of the series. While the girl I like the least (Makoto) is that high... But the fact Ann, who is my favorite phantom thief, beat her is a miracle.
I think the problem with those surveys it they just asked for a favourite not for them to be ranked. I don't think it means Sojiro was disliked just that he wasn't a lot of people number 1. Which is why those twitter ones are better
About the age thing, a lot of us who started the series as teenagers are in our 20s now. Hell, I started when I was a teenager with Persona 5 in 2019 and I am already in my 20s now lol. I bring this up to say that it might not be about the Japanes audience hating adult life as much as it is simply that the original teenage fans are aged now.
Look at it this way: If you were in high school when P3 was released in the west, you would DEFINITELY be in your 30s now. And what, are we just going to stop play Persona because we're old now? haha
Ann was pretty but then the fans turned her down thanks to her good personality she had. I’m Japanese games, women with personalities are a big no no to the fans comparing to no personalities like Byleth in FE
Just discovered your channel. Good job! BTW 47 years old player here ty for the shout-out! Been a fan of the serie since the psx days. Keep up the good work!
Makoto ranks first because his story is just honestly thousands of times better than anyone elses. Maybe tied with Aigis's. He sacrificed himself for the sake of everyone else, literally. I mean come on now.
Hearing that P6 may drop in 2025 is huge, I hope there’s a femc bc I haven’t and probably will never play that version of P3. I’m surprised how popular P3 is in Japan especially, it must be because Persona as a franchise was a lot more well known there from the mid-2000s compared to the west.
Adding FMC is not easy it's just that if you're adding FMC, you have to take gender context into account. Rewrite a lot of dialogues, add female clubs, addresses, etc. but I think it's worth it. Social games such as persona are very popular with girls.
You said you wanted a wider vision of the fandom but the only foreigner opinions listed on this video were from japan (i'm just mad brazil wasnt in it)
Ken ranking higher than most of the P3 cast in the overall poll actually makes sense. He’s such a unique character that in order to have him as your P3 favorite, you need to *really* like him. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast has some form of equivalent.
As an absolute stan of the "Bros" of the Persona games, that being Junpei, Yosuke, and Ryuji, I am sad to see them so low on the polls.
Same here
true. especially junpei.
At least Yosuke got some love from time to time. It pained me though to see Junpei, Kanji, and Ryuji so low though.
It's because they're not women 💀
Yusuke deserves a better ranking......
I remember reading that the reason why Femc is a thing is because they were surprised how popular Persona 3 was among women, so they decided to add an alternate route for them in Portable. It's pretty interesting!
plus no animated cutscenes
You'd be surprised how much female gamers enjoy visual novel type games.
Well. Actually it's pretty obvious. Female targeted genres are like that (otome games etc etc)
@@htsunmiku if only otome games was a proper long-running series, than a stupid gacha mobile app game with ridiculous microtransactions for cheap quality premiums...

Yup...
@@Queenofskill
High school is where most start dating so its a good setting to have for romance stories.
College is the spring of life? I'm dying over here it's my fall
Yep, Japanese and Asians in general value education very highly.
seeing Kanji consistently being so low hurts
I’m not surprised, his arc and character overall definitely hits home more with an American audience.
Considering how both Ryuji and Kanji are low i’m pretty sure it has to do with how blond people in Japan usually have a negative stigma surrounding them (as they’re often seen as criminals/crooks) which unfortunately would explain why they’re so low.
@@Windermed Both of the blonde boys also have a dislike for authority. that would be more of an eye sore in Japan.
Japan doesn't really like them
@@Windermed Japan doesn't like anything TOO western-like.

Ryuji's regional polarization is caused by cultural differences.
he also treats Ann super weird, basically harassing her any chance he gets. he is extremely loud and had created lots of unfavorable situations for phantom thieves almost revealing their identities. he was unnecessarily mean to morgana and in the end couldn't even properly apologize to him. and there are still plenty of other reasons as to why people wouldn't like ryuji
I only grew frustrated with Ryuji when he got a swelled head and mistreated Morgana. Otherwise, Ryuji's a true bro.

(This explains why Makoto was willing to go so far for a college recommendation)
Protagonists winning Japanese polls is not exclusive to Persona, the Fire Emblem protags tend to score really high in their polls too, as does Rean in Trails of Cold Steel. Blank slate self-inserts seem to do really well over there.
The P3 polls are interesting, as there was a lot more variance between then than P4.
I'm also one who likes Q1 more than Q2. Q2 does do some thing better, but I think it did some worse than 1.

Makoto Yuki is probably the best representative to have established the Persona series' popularity better than anyone. And probably even more so if he was alive and dancing. Whoops! 💀
I think, physically speaking, he is above everybody else, considering where he ends up after P3
Well when P5 came out, i was 26, but now I'm 33 and yeah. I still play video games, and Persona and SMT titles in particular. Just because you get older, you don't stop pursuing your hobbies. (Except if you have kids, but yeah, no thank you.)
Also, i show up in your analytics as male, but I'm actually a woman.
Google is telling you to go back to the kitchen lol
As a woman I do the same thing. Especially on sites like Ali express
It's tampons I notice the most
That's a pretty good hack.
Ads assume you are telling it the truth... how would they account for little lies like that?
Nice seeing Shinjiro being beloved in JP which hopefully corelates to him getting more screen time in the new one
Makoto Yuki is KING confirmed!

Weibo poll results are really interesting. Seeing how huge Hoyoverse is becoming, I wonder if we'll see more of the kind of archetypes that are ranking highest in Persona polls 🤔
P3D getting any votes is freakin blessed!
Sojiro being 12th place surprised me because he’s a real good Confidant to go throw along with Tora.
Strict demand for studying, placement exams & grades to get into a top college & get a high paying job, a bunch of traditional & conservative rules restricting nearly everything you do (including dating), a ton of pressure to join clubs & study groups (if not just required), otherwise you aren't seen as driven enough & won't get into good schools, etc etc etc
Seems like people are expected to not have a life besides school & studying, as it's basically work culture to get you used to future work culture 😂
Maybe high school is idealized as a form of escapism. I kinda miss that in western media.
Also posting grades publicly for all to see is horrifying if you grade low. I guess to enforce other students in policing each other to study or be humiliated. Can only imagine that those who start to fall behind just give up.
Seeing Shinji and FeMC place so high in that one poll made my soul feel healed

Fes had two versions in Japan from my understanding. One of them was a brand new game, and the other was just a disc that modified your P3 disc, so it makes sense why people would say P3 over Fes.
As far as I remember, there was an FES game in Japan, it was just that the Answer was also able to be bought seperately and just be added as an add on to the original P3.
I’m 41 and love the bell out of the persona/SMT games.

I'm a female PC gamer in my 40s who is finishing up P5 Royal after playing P4 Golden. Looking forward to the newer version of P3!
Did you get to play/finish P3R yet? Hope you've been enjoying the game!!

Kanji and Chie were the highlight of P4 golden for me!
FeMC consistantly ranking top 3, and they still aren't including her in P3RE?
Yeah, it's because Atlus completely misrepresents the games in these polls by ignoring various aspects of the additional content these games add. They do this a lot and it's incredibly annoying especially since the P3 PV01 trailer has a ton of requests on it including...
1. Please bring this game to switch
Nice.)
@FiveByFive That’s why I’m not holding my breath on it. It would be nice, but eh. It’s also nice to know someone else shares my sentiments.

I am seething, malding, and coping that Persona Arena got beat out by all the other spinoffs in that one small poll
I guess there isn't a ton of demographic crossover between fighting game and turn-based JRPG fans.
@@CatzZz4dayum loving my boy Kanji taking a W
i can't believe morgana and teddy weren't always at the bottom of every list, it must be a crime that they could climb one more position
pd: btw, seeing ryuji so low makes me understand better why so many japanese loved the scene of him being beaten up by girls
same
bro i hate them
also caroline and justine as most popular like...
@@strvmpet and considering the average age of the players is kinda sus but is japan being japan i guess
I find Morgana inoffensive. I don't love him, but I don't hate him either. Teddie... is actually incredible in P4 in his better moments, but he's HORRIBLE in spinoffs. (Where they take all his negative traits, none of his positive ones, and dial them up to 1000)
It's probably because the Japanese love mascot characters. You can't take two steps in Japan without seeing a new mascot for some store or business.
Morgana is the best persona character fight me
oh wait YOU CAN'T. goblin lookin ass
Only reason to get an Xbox
PC or the steam deck
@@ArshadZahid_nohandleideasit was literally just a parental block. Shouldve done what everyone else does and fake your age

I can't believe it. HIFUMI, who has LITTLE screen time, TIED WITH AKECHI!?
They did Ryuji dirty
Japan hates bad guys
I am curious to see how these polls have changed ever since the release of P3: Reload.
I am a 28 year old female THAT LOVES PERSONA SOOOOO MUCH I swear I cry EVERY TIME I beat the game 😭😭😭
Thank you for doing the research!
I played persona 4 when I was about 22, Persona 5 when I was 27 and royal when I was 30 and I am 32 now so mostly the age thing is fans of the series just getting older. If persona 6 comes out in the next 2-3 years as it might happen will play that too.
i love ur content man, best persona youtuber
Not moe enough?
As much as i understand cultural differences, personally speaking Junpei Yosuke and Ryuji don't deserve the hate. Bros would take a bullet for you.
My man is doing something that twitter could never do, acknowledge people's opinions. Impossible
just started the video and dude i’m really fuckin with the dds ost , good shit!!!
And what, are we just going to stop play Persona because we're old now? haha
Fr. I'm going on 30 and I'll play persona games till I die, idgaf LOL.
The series is 🔥 not gonna lie
I really expected Ann to be the most popular character.
imo she’s one of the blandest phantom thieves
I wonder if it's to do with this weird phenomenon that is, well, connected to a certain infamous manga genre.
Ann was pretty but then the fans turned her down thanks to her good personality she had. I’m Japanese games, women with personalities are a big no no to the fans comparing to no personalities like Byleth in FE

What amaze me is that the waifus even the femc cant beat the chad door mc
my homie makoto yuki being the highest with 22k votes makes me so happy
It true , bunch of my female friends know or played persona 5 , but ofc most of them are like artist so naturally they are also gamer
Just discovered your channel. Good job! BTW 47 years old player here ty for the shout-out!
Been a fan of the serie since the psx days.
Keep up the good work!
"Persona 3 Has the most intrest for a remake" Well luckly them they got there wish.
"My analytics look nothing like this!" well you're not voiced by Fukuyama Jun😅
Japan is gonna be so excited about reload then.
To the country that placed Koromaru in the top 5, good on ya. Class Act.
Remember persona 1 psx version was a hit in Japan more than the psp version
Adding FMC is not easy it's just that if you're adding FMC, you have to take gender context into account. Rewrite a lot of dialogues, add female clubs, addresses, etc.
but I think it's worth it. Social games such as persona are very popular with girls.
What I've determined by these surveys is that the Persona fanbase is BASIC.
P3 has the best cast so ranking them didn't really matter to me.
P3 Goated
P3FES in Japan was not a full game like it was in the west, it was an expansion disc in Japan so starting with FES would be awkward
You said you wanted a wider vision of the fandom but the only foreigner opinions listed on this video were from japan (i'm just mad brazil wasnt in it)
Thumbnail goes hard af 💀💀💀
My boy Ken being consistently low kills me dude
Ken ranking higher than most of the P3 cast in the overall poll actually makes sense. He’s such a unique character that in order to have him as your P3 favorite, you need to *really* like him. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast has some form of equivalent.
Great vid!
