In my opinion of this movie Redford's character represents a man who thinks he can get anything he wants because he has everything, money, power and influence but the truth is he is a lonely man he is empty inside. He can have any women he wants but all those women are only after sex and his money. No one has ever loved him the way Diana loved David. So he got curious and obssessed with Diana. He manipulated things and took advantage of the circumsrance that Diana and David were facing to prove if there is really true love when money intervenes. At the end he realized that true love really exists. Diana never looked at him the way he looked at David when in fact David was nothing compared to him.

But, she was never truly in love with him. She was infatuated by him, by his uniqueness, and how deeply he looks at her with love etc. He loved her, she was just mesmerised by how much she was loved, rather than loving him. And, the moment divorce papers signed, she was already having thoughts about only her husband in her mind.

@@MC32595 Yes, back in the 80s and 90s, marriage was something respected. It wasn't like today where people just crap out kids from whatever dude and the dude just leaves and doesn't support or help his kids and kids have no dad around. Marriage was respected, expected, and you didn't try to mess with someone's marriage. This movie today wouldn't have the same impact -- everyone would just say "who cares". It was a different time back then. A better time.
I think he finally discovered that if he didn't have money he wouldn't have had a chance with her. It took him till he was 60 to discover that money can't buy true love. To many people confuse love with lust. Lust Only last for a little bit. Love Takes you through the toughest of times it's not just a fairy tale. Hopefully more People discover this sooner rather than later.
I feel this movie deserves a lot of praise…there are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ guys as such. It’s a very human story and poses the question whether we as an audience could ever go through this scenario, which ever side you come from. Great watch 👍
Redford said all this on purpose because he basically got what he wanted and said okay you can go now ! Leaving Demi Moore with regret and guilt all because of Money !.. But the moral to the movie is simple MONEY TALKS BULLSHIT WALKS ! ALL THE TIME
I remember watching this movie in my late teens. Very complex and quite good for what it is IMO. Perhaps a narcissist, Gage was also enough of a realist to understand that she'd never love him the same as she did her husband. He could buy anything and even though he initially got her, it still wasn't enough. I give him credit for letting her go, but at the same time it was his narcissism that helped drive his decision. She might love him, but she would not love him enough or the way he wants her to love him.
You're right and wrong. His narcissism is constructed from the fact he's not achieved love. It's as if it's a temporary remedy for something so far gone, like achieving the woman of his dreams. He made the great choice of letting her go and continue her pursue of love for her real love but in the end, nobody was a winner. It's a shit show, you just want him to find the one woman.
I went with a date to see this. I'd just had a root canal, and after the film was over, I realized my root canal was a far preferable experience to this film.
I just watched this movie today and it messed up my feelings... She really did her husband dirty and I think it was very bad of him taking her back because no matter how hard he tries to forget it she really treated him bad
@Thomas Alexander Cochrane Nope, it wasn't love at all. I have watched the movie several times. It was just lust and adultéry, not love. The love cannot be adultéry.
The premise of this entire story is disgusting and should have been written as such rather than "playing" with the possibility that love CAN survive selling your soul. The fact that all the comments are praising this drivel is painful commentary on our society. Do any of you remember the love-making scene on the bed strewn with the gambling-winnings cash? As for Redford, if he is THAT loaded, WHY impose upon a MARRIED woman, if not for the pleasure of destroying a relationship? None of these characters are heroes, nor even merely lost -- these are sick individuals. The point of this scene is NOT that Redford's character is chivalrous; it's merely to avoid the ethos-crushing reality of Moore's character "going all the way" (and I do NOT mean sexually). IF the artistic point were to present the evil of "the love of money," perhaps this film could have enjoyed some value, but it's not and it doesn't. I must now take a shower.
It’s CRAZY how there’s NO ONE here with the wherewithal to say that both David & Diana sold what was supposed to be a sacred pact between each other to the highest bidder. Gage orchestrated and facilitated everything and people are acting like he was doing Diana a favor by “letting her go cause she ain’t love him like she did her husband” foh.
If you ask me that's a little too late to realize maybe it's wrong to go off in a sunset with a homewrecker. It blew my mind when David didn't high kick her ass when she came back at the end. After getting all the horny fucked outta her and being wined and dined by another man. The whole thing was debased and wrong from the beginning, I would've much rather liked it if the plot was more realistic. You have to be completely naive and delusional to think that the wife can lay down with another man for money and come back to the same marriage and husband, now a man very much could but the woman is different. As a man every time he looks at her after that he'll just think about her getting pleased and liking it by another dude and knowing your wife has a price, it's juts a ticking time bomb
I think, if she had of stayed with him, she may of had feelings for him in time, but he had a soft heart, and knew going back to her husband was for the best
I saw this when it came out and that was water cooler topic of discussion. And a lot of people remember that if you watch the entire movie he was just creating a reason for her not to fall in love with him because he had already fallen in love with her and she felt distanced from her husband for him agreeing to go through with the deal. What I hated was that in the end he minimized her sacrifice by just giving away the money to prove it didn’t matter,, but she should have been the one to decide what to do with it
She told him to keep all the money though. At that point its his to use however he pleased. Doesn't make things right as to how she chose the money for sex, just saying that it was technically now his money.
That seems like a weird take. She sacrificed their relationship to be with Redman. Why would she still be entitled to the money as if she stayed with Woody?
He just let her go as he was a noble man and he knew they belonged together- he loved her but he did not want to be her ‘keeper’ . He acted like a Gentleman despite the fact he did want to be with her

No matter how this movie ends or how this movie comes up after all these years, u can’t love 2 guys or 2 girls the same way or at the same time, this video shows that she has feelings for the rich guy and seems that she likes the attention and the way she is being treated by the rich guy
But that's the thing. It's easy to confuse the love of the lifestyle with the love of your life. Money will make the loving part easy but you don't want to wake up one day and realize you have been lying to yourself.
Of course she does. She’s a woman. Resources are the most important thing for woman. Money and houses and cars and stuff. Women are loved, but men are loved only for what they’re able to provide. I mean, she proves it. She didn’t leave until he made her leave. She wasn’t jumping out of that car until he started saying all that.
If a woman leaves her husband for a richer men this means they didn’t love their spouse in the first place. They were just waiting for the right opportunity.
I agree. If a man takes a woman back after what she pulled, he will never be able to fully trust her again and will be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.
And what about David? Does he have any blame in all this? considering He was the one that agreed for his wife to sleep with another man, and then acted like she did him wrong by cheating on him and essentially pushed her away
@@samsala7789 David's paranoia would have made perfect sense if showrunners had stuck to the original script. In the original story, after David agrees to the deal, he learns Gage is a major poon hound that has slept with half of Hollywood. When he changes his mind and tries to stop Diana, Gage’s bodyguards tease him, saying, “You left your wife with John Gage? Are you looking for grounds for divorce or what? Don’t worry about your wife; she’s bound to enjoy herself.” In an elevator, David overhears two hookers talking about Gage being well-endowed. Also, they cut another crucial scene where Diane makes a new sexual move in bed after they get home. The script doesn’t say what she did, but it sets David off, causing him to jump out of bed and say, "You never did that before." This scene was meant to imply that Diana learned it from sleeping with Gage. Diana never told David about John's offer to buy her a $5,000 dress. You could see Diana was attracted to Gage when their eyes met on the casino floor. David had no idea his wife had already encountered him. It makes sense that David blew up after finding the “memento” Diana took from the yacht (matches), Gage's phone number in her wallet, and when she saw Gage without telling him in advance.
@@samsala7789 I see the point you are making but one should not act and change who she/he is because other tells him to. If she loved her husband, then why leave him because he said so and if he didn't love her and she did love him and was confused why not resolve the situation with him instead of searching for some other man. Its classical situation of why in the first place they got to that point. It was due to financial hardship and as they saw Wealthy Man they got blinded. Devil comes in different forms like drugs, porn, wanting to be rich and famous so bad and etc... David was weak and so was she, but you can't make someone sleep with other man or women if they don't want to.
3:43 That's an interior within an interior filming set. The way this actress on the left (viewing perspective) is bathed in soft white light while the extras are in the pedestrian shadows indicates that this scene was not in a bus outdoors.
I disagree with John's doing. Of course she still thinks about David at that time. As time passes by, he'll win her heart. He should give her some time to heal...
@@samsala7789 I beg to differ. He should have let her convey her feeling. Then he could have reasoned with her. I think she would accept him. But he was too quick to respond. 😔
@@teh5678 I don’t know, maybe, I honestly think she already made up her mind, and what ever John would of said in that car would not of changed anything. You can see her devastation when David signed those papers and she realised the love of her life was prepared to walk away from her for good. This is my opinion anyways 👍
You know what I always found funny about this scene, aside from the fact that it's dark and raining when he gets out of the car to open her door, but dawn and not raining by the time she gets out? It's what people see when they watch it. Lots of my women friends view this a some sort of testament to girl power; that she'd convinced John that he's never going to measure up to David. But I see it and I think, well... rich man offers you $1MM to sleep with him, you do it, it craters your relationship (surprise surprise) so you hook up with the millionaire, but get shook when you discover he's done that same thing numerous times, THEN you realize you had it better before.
@@LA2047 hmmm...dunno. I believe she notices he is lying about it, and that he is trying to be a jerk as a way to get her to go back to the man and the life she left behind. Because being part of a "million dollar club" is a fantastic way to minimize her sacrifice and make her see that her life with her husband was worth so much more. If you notice...when he says the "sexually compatible" statement, he can not even look at her in the eye after a few seconds and then looks down, unable to meet her gaze. Then she lets him know that SHE KNOWS what he is trying to do...hence "Thank you John"...
Forgot what let up to that scene... But what a strange movie. I wouldn't take her back if I were Woody... Take the money and run... Or my cut should I say.
I love he gave her the good luck 🍀 coin.. indeed it was good luck because it had the same face in both sides 😊… it was always head… l wish they didn’t cut the video since that part was coming right after she is seating at the bus.
That's how he proves he's rich. A wise-ass wise man once told me "There's no such thing as a $1000/night hooker; but there are $1000/night johns." A harsh way to state a truth.

Its still a creepy movie. He sees her, and then suddenly he loves her. Suddenly she loves him. Then rejects her for her happiness and her husbands happiness. Weird movie.
I guess some people would see it as weird but it happens all the time and it’s why the phrase “love at first sight” has become so popular in media and in real life. People can argue it actually means “attraction at first sight” but I personally believe that you can have an instant bond with someone you don’t know without it being inherently “creepy.” He definitely used his wealth to try to impress her though and thought she would be easily influenced by the glamour of his lifestyle. In the end, he realized she would never have the affection and history she shares with her husband with him and he would never compare (despite his tremendous wealth and societal power).

How is that an American movies thing. You know how many American movies there are? 😂
I feel this movie deserves a lot of praise…there are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ guys as such. It’s a very human story and poses the question whether we as an audience could ever go through this scenario, which ever side you come from. Great watch 👍

I just realized the face that put the driver when he said his line , hahaha
I have yet to see this movie other than watching a few clips, but did she love him a bit though cause of that goodbye kiss at the end?

The driver played along. He just did it to let her go....He realized she would never love him... Even with all his money.
@@fantasma8253 he didn’t need to physically abuse her “kick her ass” 🙄, but I wouldn’t have taken her back, not for a second.

Prime Demi Moore was untouchable.
What I hated was that in the end he minimized her sacrifice by just giving away the money to prove it didn’t matter,, but she should have been the one to decide what to do with it
It's games if you ask me!!!why would you play with someone's emotions if you loved them
Oh the poor hurt millionaire theory. Give me a break.
Lol. Such a female comment.
He just let her go as he was a noble man and he knew they belonged together- he loved her but he did not want to be her ‘keeper’ . He acted like a Gentleman despite the fact he did want to be with her

So she basically only left because he wanted to end it not because she wanted to. If John had not ended it would she have returned to David?

3:43 That's an interior within an interior filming set. The way this actress on the left (viewing perspective) is bathed in soft white light while the extras are in the pedestrian shadows indicates that this scene was not in a bus outdoors.

@@teh5678 I don’t know, maybe, I honestly think she already made up her mind, and what ever John would of said in that car would not of changed anything.
