bro is basically giving you a mini-crash course in film making - it's lean and simultaneously jam packed with technical detail. Wow..
Haha, thanks for watching!
Yea …. This is great. Thank you🙏🏾
I've shot two features with the original BMPCC and still love this camera. Great stuff.
can you share the link so that I can watch ! THanks a lot !!
Thank you and congrats on the features!
That’s awesome. What do you mean by “feature”? I hear this phrase often!
@@nickdubesa8068 by feature, I mean a full length movie, as opposed to short films. Our features have been a little over 80 minutes each.
@@MR.BUCK_MAN I’ve tried replying to this a few times, but it seems to never post. Depending on your country, several of our films are available on different services, but all our films are available on TubiTV in the US. Elsewhere, I’d recommend Plex to see our feature Family Obligations that was shot on the original BMPCC
Man, you are such a humble and knowledgeable dude! The advice you gave here is amazing and all within such an acceptable budget for most of us who are starting out or want minimal costing rigs. Thank you a ton.
You are such a giant with such simple language. For me, any of your videos is a college. Thank you brother. You excite me, motivate me to want to do it, make me look easy. I have two feature films and now I'm going to send them to the screen.
Great information. Really helps me to make an informed decision with so many options out there.
I just watched your movie. If that isn’t a testament to what this camera is capable of I don’t know what is. Holy cow it looked gorgeous. Great job.
Wow, thank you so much! That’s really nice of you to say :)
Your videos are always informative sir, great work !!
Thanks man! I appreciate it!
Great Video, so informative and well delivered! I shot 2 documentarys on BMPCC OG and still learned a few things watching this today, great camera, thanks Will.
Wow, thank you very much and thanks for watching!
Just for clarity, the 178.2 degree shutter in EU/AU and other 50Hz areas is applicable only if you're shooting at 24/48fps. If you're shooting at 25/50/100fps, then 180 degrees is the still the correct shutter speed.
Correct re:24fps. I should have specified that a bit better, thank you for catching that.
Guys, we're thinking 172.8 degree, correct?
The available shutter speeds are 172.8 and 180. Is 178.2 a typo? Cheers
Looks amazing! Love the OG Pocket
Thank you!
Excellent advice, thanks a lot! Inspirational
You are so right about this camera. Regretted selling mine, but now I own two and they’re keepers.
Great Video! Not only for the og Pocket but for (m43) filmmaking in general. I will try to apply your points with my next short film in Italy!
Great advice, nice job!
I'm bingeing all your BMPCC videos. Loving them!! Would you share your video on creating proxies? Thank you so much!
This one is golden! Thank you
Thanks for watching!
phenomenal vid... keep them coming...
Thank you very much!
Really great! We have a pretty similar setup for our BMMCC…one thing I would recommend though is getting the newly released meike 10mm mft instead of the 8 and 12. Obviously splits the difference in terms of focal lengths, but also the 10 is the same speed and 77mm filter thread as the 16, 25, and 35!
Great tip! Thanks :)
Amazing video. Subscribed!
Great video!! Can always get a speed booster and be able to adapt m42 lenses and get great images
Thank you so much. Very important informationen. You think and feel how the artists do. I like this a lot......
Thank you very much and thanks for watching! :)
GREAT video. Thanks for all of it.
Thanks for watching!
Love this video! 🔥
Thanks so much!
YES!!! Thanks again, Will, you're Awesome 👌
Thank you very much :)
@@WillvonTagen Very welcome, my friend. 😃
Wow what an amazing mini course of filmmaking. I see and hear the love for the OG but I'm hell bent on getting the 6k g2. Hoping most of this info will still apply. Thankyou so much for this video.
Thanks for watching! Yea, the 6k is definitely a powerful tool with great images. Most of this should still apply. Good luck!
I have a Sony camera and I learned more about film making here then other Sony centered UA-cam channels. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching! :)
useful information, im not planning to shoot any films at this point but like to see what this camera is capable of and i learned some really useful stuff a long the way. thank you.
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching!
Awesome video! 😍 And the clips from your features look great!
I have the og bmpcc and I too love the image. Also have a Canon 5D3 with Magic Lantern for RAW shooting. And that image is also lovely. Have a number of Nikon F lenses and various other accessories. Now learning about color correction (reading vectorscopes, waveforms etc).
That's all good fun but my challenge is finding people to make films with. Not quitting my day job just yet to go to film school.
If you're based in Sweden/Nordics and want to add a crew member with some gear, hello! 😊
I always loved the 16mm look. Will always do. Sort of like going from an omni condenser to a close up dynamic mic. It's like wiping up the bread crumbs from the kitchen table and just keeping that juicy bread loaf on there. Yummy. You have to make sure that loaf is real yummy and well lit, of course! 😂
Black Swan comes to mind. Shot on 16mm with Arriflex 416 and a bunch of Canon DSLRs. Beautiful movie.
Thank you
You’re welcome!
My complements once again!
You have shared -- in real world detail -- what the capabilities are of this camera!
When you pointed out that cinema film usually max's out at 500 ISO, I thought how true that is! Hollywood lights up their sets to very intense levels to allow for the limitation of film. Although my RED camera is pretty good at low light; I never plan for it to reach its' limits when I light a scene. The same with my BMPCC-OG. It is a cinema camera and you should light the scene to match the 400-800 ISO. If I really need a super low light shot... Ok I'll put my Sony A7 on the job. But it's not going to match the "look" of the BM-OG without some work in post. So I say pick one up on eBay or where ever and punch it in to your next job! Even if you have a high speed new era camera, you still have to do some work in post to match the unique color science available from this camera... just saying.... :)
Its me again. It be awesome if you did a video explaining EXPORT PROJECT SETTINGS, hopefully in Davinci. Either for youtube settings but also for preserving or projecting feature films for festivals or streaming channels. :)
I'll see what I can get together for you :)
Thank you for making this video! I have an OG and love it, but my mini HDMI is broken and can't use my monitor anymore. I've been wanting to upgrade to the 4K, but after watching this, I might rig out the OG a bit more and squeeze out as much juice as I can from this bad boy.😄Thanks for the inspiration Will!
Thanks for watching and good luck! Also it May be worth selling your OG as is (could probably get $200+ for it) and buying another one with an intact hdmi. They still sell for around $350 if you are patient.
@@WillvonTagen I've thought of that before, I might look into it again. Thanks!
I've just started shooting my first short film with the OG Bmpcc, and even though I'm an incompetent noob using the camera for the first time, the image quality is great. I'm trying to shoot at dawn and dusk to get good lighting for free, or in forests to break up midday light, and feeling confident so far. The camera, a quality Gimbal and a cine prime lens all in all cost £900! I was keen to upgrade to the 4K before I even began shooting, but now I see the image the OG gets, I'll probably stick with it for several narrative shorts! Maybe the 6K pro is worth the investment one day..?
Sounds like a great setup! Glad you are making good use! I think from an image and ergonomic standpoint the 6k pro is probably the best if you want to use it for professional work--however I think the Pocket 4K allows for better lens options at a lower pricepoint. High end EF glass can definitely run up the bill and like I said--better glass can trump higher resolution. But the 6K Pro is for sure a powerhouse.
Watching Heritage on my nebula vega native 1080p projector 120inch screen!
Great story!
The bad guys stold the show!
The film look rocks!
Oh wow, thank you very much! :) :)
It’s the look. Yes
7:43 I want to add something here about the sharpness. I've noticed that sharpness = contrast. The more contrast the image has the sharper it looks. Working in HDR has made my 2.5k videos look like 4k. So it's about lens choice and lighting. Also if you want the besr contrast with the image, shoot RAW
7:56 saving the rest for later… this sounds incredibly interesting so far. I think in a similar way 🤙😎
Thanks for watching :)
If you use the ANDYCINE A6 monitor you can power the monitor and the OG BMPCC through the monitor DC out using NP-F batteries
Great tip!
Thank you for your video. I bought second handed bmpcc og but still looking for the simple cage for og. Could you let me know your cage name and where I can possible buy? Thanks a lot.
I’ve got an OG in the locker here somewhere and now thinking I should revisit it. Where can we find Heritage to watch it? (I’ve also snuck into that Soviet facility in Bulgaria; that must have presented some interesting production challenges?)
I've seen other features made with the BMPCC OG was pretty disappointed with the results. For instance, there's a movie from 2015 called Flytrap that was shot with one of these and it looks terrible. But Heritage looks great. I'm impressed.
Wow, thank you very much! I’m working to get a version of the film on to the channel at some point.
Brother, I don't know if You already mentioned it, but what filter can I buy rap to use on it?
Well explained,, May know what lenses used to shoot your feature " Heritage " ?
Thank you! I used the Veydra Mini Primes. The Meike lenses I mention are the reincarnation of those :)
Is there a raw workflow for fcpx with this thing? Without going into resolve…?
Mammoth video! I never plan to shoot a feature but I learned a lot about how to rig the camera from this video, thanks. I've been struggling with noise that is colored (i.e. red green and blue noisy dots visible in Resolve instead of the achromatic noise I see in other people's videos). I'm using a Metabones adapter and Canon 17-55, and stopping down and zooming in a bit to try to reduce artefacts from being wide open or at the widest angle. Shooting 23.97FPS and 400 ISO in RAW. I'm able to expose to the right with my light, so I don't think it's an issue of light. Wondering if my sensor is bad or if changing glass would help, or if I'm doing something else wrong.
Thanks for watching! Hmmm... I'm not sure what your issue might be without seeing a sample of it.
@@WillvonTagen I used to think my sensor was bad with coloured noise in the shadows. Maybe it is but Resolve is your best friend. You can desaturate any noise present in the shadows to give you that achromatic-ness (is that a word?) plus noise reduction will take a lot of that out too. I shot this short with the OG which has a couple of low-light sequences and I'm happy with how the shadows look: ua-cam.com/video/SBwje8EDl84/v-deo.html (5:08 onwards for low-light)
Sorry I should've replied here - take a look at my reply below :)
Will, any update on the cases? I need one!
Hi! Yes the design work is just about done and I am getting quotes from machine shops to begin the first order. Hoping to have them shipping by end of May, early June. (Presales in April)
Hi, i find a use 6k pro for only 1500€ with a lens and extra battery and cage. I see that i can get the OG and the 4k aroung 500€ to 1000€ im not a pro and not a filmmaker just do travel and wildlife and Mico. Is it to much of a camera for me ? Should i get just the 4k or OG? Thanks
shot a feature with this camera. It was beautiful
Fantastic and congrats! Not an easy task :)
where could I watch your films you shot with the OG?
I owe you a Cappachino ... you come to NY look me up and it is done ... Thank you for your advice.
Hahaha, don’t be surprised if I take you up on that one day!
Thank you for dignifying the mft in professional productions, so demoted by the super 35 (Gracias por dignificar el mft en producciones profesionales, tan demigrado por el súper 35)
Thanks so much for watching! :) It's a great format for sure.
Out of curiosity; what audio recorder do you use for your features/projects?
When I had a crew and designated audio they were using some line of sound devices. When I was working solo the Zoom H6n with sennheiser lav and Boom worked very well.
You sound a lot like Kyle McDougal. Seriously, I freaked out for a second :). Awesome video though:)
Haha, not sure who that is but thank you :)
@@WillvonTagen This might freak you out :)

I want to rent your movie, but I can’t seem to get access from my country (Denmark) I really wanted to watch it!
I bought a SmallRig cage back when I bought my camera (that I haven't had time to use)...with the shoulder rig, front handles, and top handle, it's such a great little rig. I really need to get out and make something.
OG 😁🤙
Hi! Thank you for this video. I use bmpcc og 1,5 years. What's about SD-Card? 64 gb express sd ~ 13-14 min. RAW :c
Check out my other video about sd cards you can still buy new. There are links in the description for the Kingston cards. Don’t go below 128gb or they won’t work. Good luck!
Hey can you link the cage you used from Wooden Camera? Thank you
Unfortunately those are no longer produced and only appear rarely on eBay. I am about to launch a new cage however. If you are interested you can sign up for notifications on my website. Presales start July 4th.
You've made an excellent series of videos regarding the bmpcc.. however, what are your thoughts on someone using the Canon c100 Mark II... the look of the BM cameras is truly unique and filmic, but how close can people get with Canon c100 line?
Thanks for watching! Honestly I have very little experience with canon or the c100s etc. I’ve directed a few shorts with one, but never actually used it myself so I don’t feel qualified to advise on using the camera the same way I do with Blackmagic.
Thanks for this reply- appreciated
Just watched your film Heritage, , can't believe this whole film shot on OG Pocket Cinema camera , do you mind sharing what equipments used for sound ? It sounds very crispy and did you used any diffusion filters? Also wanna know your camera settings too 😂 i know lot of questions i asked if possible answer it haha , thank you 🙂
Thanks for watching! Part of the production used some very nice audio equipment, but nearly 60% of the movie was reshot later, and I used a Zoom h6n with Sennheiser lav mics. The final post mix was done professionally. The lenses were Veydra Mini Primes and only filters used were NDs to cut light. Everything was shot in raw @ 800 iso and 180* shutter/23.976fps. Take a look at my video on reshoots for a bit more info on the process :)
@@WillvonTagen Great thank you will definitely check reshoot video 🙏
Did you use an IR cut filter?
@@mediaforcecg I *always* use a IR cut filter underneath my NDs. In fact I have them screwed on all my lenses all the time. I tested with/without and I definitely get a lot of IR pollution with my sensor.
@@sandeepgillco do you have a link? , i would like to buy also. From what i onow ithe ir cut filter also reduces moire nad aliasing

HELP i cannot find an evf on ebay or amazon that's solid and works with bmpcc original ! any advice or direction please?
Hi! There are actually quite a few EVFs that will work. Is it more of a budget question? Basically anything with an HDMI input will work.
Hi Will. Better Meike or the brand new Viltrox Cine Mft for Bmpcc Og? Thx!
Right now I would say Meike for sure. They are easier to find and cheap on the used market and are currently available with wider options. The Viltrox is only 23mm at its widest which is a telephoto lens on the OG.
@@WillvonTagen thanks a lot
Great info. I wonder C mount lenses are very cheap. Are they cinema lens?
I have some classic Angenieux C mount lenses that really work great on my BMPCC OG both fixed and zoom that provide great images.
It really depends. A lot of the C-Mount lenses that were found on the old Bolex cameras were quite good but most are a bit small (and not all will cover a s16 sensor since the Bolex was r16). So I think you could get some good images but I don't know if there is much advantage as far as workflow on set. But by all means, work with what you got :)
@@WillvonTagen Thanks. Its very difficult to find original BM cameras on sale. I wonder going BMPCC 4K and shooting 1080p prores HQ will give the same results and look as original BM? Although it's different sensor.
I dont find any cases for bmpcc og in europe anymore. Does someone has a tip for me what I can do?
I sell them on my website (www.willvontagen.com/category/bmpcc-og) and am happy to ship to Europe. I’ve shipped to 32 countries so far. Let me know if you have any questions :)
How do I check the camera firmware? Also, if the HDMI is broken, is it feasible to update via memory card. Thanks, in advance.
The only way to check firmware is to connect the camera to the computer. Honestly you would be best to just download the firmware package from the BMD site and go through the install process. If the camera doesn’t need it-no harm done and you’ll have confirmation. It takes about 5 minutes and is free.
The camera connects to the computer via usb, which is located unter the battery door. The camera also needs to be connected to DC power during the update. But there is no need to have access to HDMI to update the firmware 👍🏻
Also, the firmware is version 2.1
@@WillvonTagen I didn't know the update port is under the battery 🙀. You are, "The Man" 😎 🎉 Thanks
Why do you prefer 23.976 fps over 24 fps? 20:23
Awesone info, why do you prefer 23.976 over 24 FPS?
And what are you project settings in Davinci- color spaces etc when working with the OG?
Awesone info, why do you prefer 23.976 over 24 FPS?
Is super 16mm good enough? I dunno, did miami vice look good enough? lol.
And don't forget the fancy speedbooster.
For me, I was sad when I found out the Bmpcc4k didn’t produce the same image as the OG. Bmpcc4k is clinically good, but there’s no magic like the OG.
Guys, if you are searching the cage for your BMPCC OG, one russian man make it. He makes and for another camera's too, but the most popular is for BMPCC OG. In Russia huge community of "BMPCC OG lovers") So, if you have friends in Russia, you can buy cage without problem))
I have built a cage too, which now now for sale on my website. You can see my latest video for more information.
Is the BMPCC OG good for shooting UA-cam videos like this one?
I would say so. The only thing to keep in mind is the audio would need to be recorded separately. I shoot my UA-cam with the Pocket 4K partially because I can run my audio straight into camera with the mini xlr ports. However image and usability I don’t see a reason why the OG couldn’t be used for such videos :)
Would be cool to still easily get your hands on this camera, but paying $1200 for a used version is silly. Love the image this thing produces though.
They sell very regularly for $500 and under on eBay. I’ve even grabbed a few for much less-just gotta be patient and keep looking :)
BMPCC OG should be fine now even more you can push it father in post if you film RAW and uprez denoise it should be plenty most of the time.
The motion cadence on the Blackmagic OG is not right imo. It's what stops it from looking like a "real movie" as you say. Your cinematography looks fantastic though, great job.
esa cadencia la alcanza la bmpcc 4k?
@@GabrielAlbaAudioVisual does la alcanza mean the same? wait I looked it up. but I don't understand your question. I don't speak Spanish
@@robertpaterson5477 is the cadence of movement in bmpcc 4k acceptable?
@@GabrielAlbaAudioVisual it’s better. But the Sigma FP is better than both of them. I would like to see Will shoot a feature with that
Hmmm.. I haven't noticed an issue but who knows--I have the same opinion about the Micro so it's possible. Thanks for watching :)
Omai, what a great review on how to make a movie. Finaly i learned a lot! And me, I just sold mu OG, grrr.... My question for you is , for our next feature film : should you buy the 4K or the 6K pro? Like you said, and I agree most, Shollow depth Of field is indeed not so imortant! And maybe another question, if you find the time : wich lensens should you use (i plan on shooting vintage lenses?). Thanks very much for this vid : I folow you from now on ;-) (ps : here a short I made this year with an Alexa classic, but the camera is too heavy for a whole movie, so i selled it : ua-cam.com/video/w_HZnK5x6dE/v-deo.html ) gr, Nicolaas
8:17 another example why nobody should care about whats the max ISO of a camera. because ISO is a bullshit standard and camera makers like Sony and canon make use of that bs to trick people into thinking they are getting some super sensitive sensor.
For an example, GH5 will give you brighter image at 6400 ISO than Sony A7SII at 24600 and noise on both will be pretty much same. Sony can go up to even 100 thousand but after 12800 its just increasing ISO number and no gain in brightness at all. just increases noise. Almost like they faked ISO values to make people feel they are getting like 10 times better sensitivity.
So comparing ISO of two different cameras is like comparing max RPM of two cars.
