    As a cinematographer where I work with many different cameras, my own equipment is a blackmagic pocket 4k and the pocket original, and the texture and feel of the original pocket is way more beautiful than the pocket 4k and many others DSLR and semi professional camera. That's exactly what I did last year - only with a Fujifilm X-T1. While everyone was upgrading to iPhone 12 I sold my 11 Pro and bought the camera and 35/1.4. Haven't ever gotten such beautiful images before, despite me doing photography part time almost half my life and trying out around 20 different cameras through the years. Now expanding into film as well I'm really looking forward to try Blackmagic sooner or later!

    This camera has made me appreciate what filmmaking is all about. I had stepped up to the 4K - had more to do with control of the camera by the ATEM than image quality. With this camera, you can learn not to chase pixels. You can learn all the basics. The new lenses are really meant for newer and much heavier cameras. I stepped back to the BMPCC and regrouped. I now use manual vintage Angenieux lenses that produce amazing images when paired with the BMPCC. Now collecting dust are newer auto MFT lenses. Now, this camera comes alive in your hands. Shoot RAW into Davinci Resolve Studio 17. Learn to use your filters, Learn all the basics. You now have total control of the content of your videos. The real message is to decide what you want to be the end result of your work. This camera with vintage lenses delivers a look that cannot be duplicated chasing pixels, technology, and spending $$$.
    I do not have any aspirations of creating feature films. Yet the results are spell bounding in their quality. HD is more than enough for posting and sharing. Most of the time I have to downsize to 720p to send or upload for friends and family.
    Remember, enough is enough, go back to the basics. Vintage lenses complete the bargain when combined with this camera. Both of my BMPCCs cost under $500 - patience and determination is the guideword in pursuing one. I just picked up a mint Angenieux 15-150mm Anamorphic Parfocal Zoom lens in the original box for $305. What will your zoom lens for the 4K/6K will cost you? Enough said.
    Also thanks for the info on the SD cards - I use the Kingston 512K in both of my BMPCC shooting raw at 24fps. Another important step is getting a cheap reliable external battery setup. I am using a small rig battery plate with Sony NP-F970 high capacity batteries for external power into the DC in. I never worry about a low battery again. Again, affordable option.
    Thanks to Will, for inspiring me to take a step back and just stick with the basics and learn the craft.

    You did an awesome job brother. I'm with you. These new age wanna be DPs are too lazy to create. They are caught up on camera manufacturer hype and any large number with a K at the end of it. SMDH...They want to rely on the camera to do everything and they just hit record button. I come from film. Where your camera gives you what you design by the way you light it and create with it. I shot a full feature with the Canon 60D and till today, no one believes I shot that with a 60D...Some said Sony F3, some said Red Scarlet. But I shot it with a 60D. Camera doesn't make a film, is the person behind the camera that creates the image and a camera is just a tool to captures it.

      @@WillvonTagen does it work well with a gimbal? I'm considering getting a BMPCC for a documentary project that will be mostly shot with a gimbal or a tripod, and a bit worried about the lack of autofocus in an uncontrolled setting. The gimbal would solve the stabilisation issues but wondering if that doesn't make it more difficult to keep the image in focus? Thanks so much in advance if you have a minute to answer!

    Most practical video I have seen so far. I am sick and tired of 4K UHD wearing me out! I don't need it, I don't want it! Finally someone who gets it. My most respected UA-camrs have pushed 4K like a narcotic. I have a Sony A7ii that shoots 1080p and that is just fine. Getting a Sony Rx10 used. Guess what? It shoots 1080P also. No 4,6,8,12 K UHD B.S. Most who get into this fall into the trap of listening to the newest greatest must have tech geeks who push 4K. You just don't really need it in most cases. I am rather dubious about this camera, but it does have me curious. I would love to experiment with this. It looks very attractive. Do I want to drop everything else just for this? Hell no! But it is nice to have options, and yeah budget is a huge consideration. I can't buy a Sony a7S iii or the a7IV. Nor do I want too. 10 years from now maybe, but doubt it even then. I like the fact you learn the art with this camera and not the tech. I want to be in this realm. So this video this month tonight is the most relevant video I have seen. Excellent. Just subbed and liked your video. Nicely done!

    Thanks for the great video on the original BMPCC. Especially addressing low light with this camera. I’ve recently expanded my creative media agency with services in video and filmmaking. Even within my budget limitations I was able to purchased 4 of the original pocket cameras at a price that I consider to be a steal. I recently started shooting music videos and local TV commercials, as a one-man production, I’ll set up all 4 cameras, one fully rigged camera on a tripod, one camera on a slider, one camera on a gimbal and a fourth camera on a shoulder rig. During a shoot I don’t have the need to strip down a camera from the tripod and re-rig it for the slider or balance it on a gimbal, Using multiple cameras this way, gives me freedom to quickly choose/change angles and shots during production...moving from one camera to another and then back-and-forth.

    The price of these cameras has crept up too much to make it worth while. I agree on most of the things you have said about the camera, except for a few big issues. Fixed Pattern Noise, this camera and all first gen blackmagic cams (except maybe 2.5k) had FPN. Buying a used camera today in 2020, can you really guarantee the cash strapped indie filmmaker that the bmpcc will have no FPN? No you can not.
    Secondly; you can not use any cheapo SD card. It is a very specific, much more expensive SDXC card, because if you do not use one of the few that work, it leads to issue number three.
    Thirdly and to conclude, the camera's operating system is too unstable and is prone to crashes, some of them out of the blue. While Will's camera may not have any of the issue I brought up, many BMPCC out there do. When they work, they are great, but when they don't, you are SOL. Almost no rental houses carry them, those that do give a warning that it is a niche camera that may let you down when you need it most. Any big pro shoot that uses them, has twenty on hand if one or more break, which they do often.

      I got two. Always recording in Raw mostly for recording performance and sometime in very low light. I use the ISO 800 hundred, never more, film preset and it works! Sometime I have to push up the highlight in resolve and if there is some noise, I use the resolve denoiser which is awesome. The only big issue for me is the memory cards and the lack of solid solutions.

      I can understand. Maybe give the 4K version a look. There are some great MFT lens from Laowa (7.5mm t/2.1 and 9mm f/2.8) that on the 4K would give you a very wide field of view for real estate without distortion. That might be a killer combo for you.

      @@WillvonTagen Thinking about that or the 6k, you mentioned that you thought the 6k was overrated?

    • @WillvonTagen
      @WillvonTagen  4 роки тому +1

      @@RewDowns Don't get me wrong. the 6K is an absolutely amazing camera, and an outstanding deal for what it is--but I think what you "give up" to achieve the extra 2K isn't worth it for most users in my opinion.
      For instance, you can only shoot BRAW in 6K (4K is limited to ProRes only--and I personally only shoot RAW (even on my vlogs)) But while I ALWAYS want RAW... I know I would not always want 6K--and that could be an issue for many.
      Also, it is EF mount only, so I think you lose a lot of options when it comes to lenses--especially if you are already coming from an MFT system or use Vintage glass that has not been converted (quality EF glass is a lot more expensive generally). Also--although both need battery solutions--the 6K still draws a lot more than the 4k, so you will need to pack extra battery bricks.
      And finally, the crop factor is not much less between the two (1.9x vs 1.6x). If you use a speedbooster on the 4K, you can actually get a 1.35x or 1.2x equivalent, meaning a bit more range if you are not using native MFT glass).
      Now, for a big production, the 6K may be very much worth it--especially if you have access to amazing EF Cine Glass. But I think being limited to RAW at 6K can be a big issue when it comes to daily use.
      In all, it is a very fine camera, but I see it as a bit more of a specific tool where the 4K is good for just about any job.

    • @RewDowns
      @RewDowns 4 роки тому +1

      @@WillvonTagen That's very helpful thanks, I see what you mean about adding a battery and cage, I want to try to keep the BMPCC as pocketable as possible ;)
      The only thing making my decision even tougher is that all of my lenses are already EF so when you buy the speedbooster for the 4k its essentially the same price.
      And 6k is not ideal for file size but you can downsample right?

    • @WillvonTagen
      @WillvonTagen  4 роки тому

      @@RewDowns I suppose if you already have a lot of quality EF glass then that does change things a bit. What is your widest lens? (because again the crop on the 6K isn't all that great).
      A company called Viltrox also has a speedbooster that is much more affordable. Here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/341Ejs9
      I have not tested it, but I know a LOT of other camera influencers who use it over the Metabones--so I assume it is much better than most non-matabones speedboosters on the market.
      I don't want to sway your decision. I want you to get the best camera for the job--for sure. I would say look at a few other 6K vs 4K videos on youtube and decide what you think is best :)

      @@baqcasanke There's no slow motion in Indiana Jones, or Star Wars, or Back to the Future, or Jaws, or Manhattan. I can think of hundreds of some of the best films made that don't use it.
      Agreed--in some bigger action films and sport films they will make use of overcranking--but in the average film it is pretty rare, and therefore a camera's ability to overcrank is very low on my list of needs from a narrative cinema camera. (If you need it for 1 or 2 scenes you could rent a camera with the ability).
      Now: to eat my own words a little, in the case of building VFX shots (even in the original Star Wars), overcranking is used to give scale to miniatures in motion--or even in explosions because the fire is actually miniature. But the footage is then placed into a scene that plays back in realtime (not slow motion). It is a tool used as part of elemental scene building--but the cameras used for those VFX shots are very different from the camera used for the rest of the narrative.
      For nature documentaries, wedding and corporate videos etc.--sure, I agree slo-mo is a needed tool. But I do stand by what I said, that Slo-Mo doesn't automatically make an image cinematic--just like shallow depth of field doesn't. I have a video on my channel about that :)

    Can you give us your insights or tips on judging exposures on BMPCC? I realise it's a complex thing, and you probably by now just judge it based on experience... I read some advice on the Personal-View forum, in a thread entitled "2k Blackmaging Pocket Cinema, active m43, $995" from user Kohli, and wondered if this chimes with you.
    He suggests using waveform on a monitor (he wrote this in 2013, so perhaps today he'd be using false colour on the Ninja V to judge what you see vs IRE ranges for the look you want in a shot) combined with zebras at 75%. His logic is that 100% zebras does not mean individual RGB channels are not clipping at the sensor, only that all channels are not clipping. So even at 90% zebras, individual channels can clip - eg green channel on highlights on skin, eg if using UVIR cut filter outdoors.
    He suggests aiming to get exposure in the -1 to +1 range, for the best balance between noise in shadows versus clipping in highlights. So by using 75% zebras, he's looking on the monitor for skin or other objects in the shot with highlights you want to keep, and adjusting exposure to remove zebras so that no single RGB channel is clipping. He also advises setting BMPCC to Film mode for recording, and View mode for the screen - the LUT the camera uses apparently gives the best zebras and image to judge exposure.
    Does this chime with your experience? Any other watchouts or ideas for judging exposure on the BMPCC, or using tools on external monitors?

    • @WillvonTagen
      @WillvonTagen  2 роки тому +2

      To be honest, when I shot my feature with the camera I relied totally on Zebra set to 100%. I think this is good for many settings, especially if you are moving quick. 95% is also a good place to be.
      This is real world experience--but there are definitely much better ways to go and DPs I have worked with take advantage of better monitors to read wave form etc and they get great results with the BMPCC. If you can, I do think using False Color is very smart for getting skin tones right and also making sure there are no strange flickers or strobing in the frame. I didn't understand False Color 5 years ago when I was working on the film, but I definitely use it when ever available now. False color + Zebra at 100-90% should get you great results and still allow you to move at a desire-able pace.

      @@WillvonTagen OK cool, I will try both approaches over time and see. I fully take your point about moving at speed: I hadn't thought of that simple, practical need!! I should get my BMPCC soon, so will start experimenting. Thanks for sharing your experience, it all helps me get off to a better start.

      @@WillvonTagen Just in case others reading these comments are interested, I came across a thread on the Blackmagic Users Forum. The thread is entitled "ETTR and middle grey" if anyone wants to Google it - the thread is 10 pages, the meat of the conclusions are on pgs 8-10. As many here will know, DP John Brawley does a lot of development testing for BM cameras to the present day. He and other forum users share conclusions from testing and experience of this camera, discussing exposure management. It confirms that 100% or 95% zebras would work for this camera, as long as middle greys/skin tones are no more than -2/+3 stops under-/over-exposed: colour detail when grading in post is not lost within this range.
      As you point out, for speed this means practically that you decide an exposure setting for the scenes you're shooting, and then stick to it from shot to shot as much as possible if you want consistent colour when it comes to grading. If you ETTR every shot, you'll have more work to do in post in order to make each shot match.
      For the technically minded, Brawley explains the reason: the data coming off the BMPCC sensor has a 22 bit colour depth which for Raw recording in Film mode, is compressed to 16 bit linear for encoding. The camera ISO setting selects a log curve for encoding that signal to a colour depth of 12 bits, and in Davinci Resolve that 12 bit file is unpacked to 16 bit linear 'under the hood'. So effectively these files allow us to work with 16 bits of linear colour information. Amazing.
      Something else Brawley says: grey cards can be 'out' by 1-3 stops, just based on the light source and the angle the card is held at! Which adds a whole new complication... hence experience and just experimenting is the only way to get a 'feel' for it I think LOL!

    I own and use a BMPCC OG. For your feature films, what audio equipment do you use? I’m in the process of making a feature on a budget and I don’t know what boom mic to get. I already have an H4N Zoom recorder.

    • @WillvonTagen
      @WillvonTagen  3 роки тому +1

      For the first round of principle photography we had a pretty pro kit--but I am not sure what all was included. However, for a number of reshoots (60% of the final film) we did use a stripped down budget kit. I would recommend the H6N over the H4N, as having the ability to dial the input levels of each track while filming is crucial. Beyond that we had 2x Sennheiser ew 100 Wireless Lav microphones as well as a mix of Rode NTG3 and Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mics (depending on when the filming was occurring). All actors had a wireless on as backup with the boom serving as the main source. The boom was just a cheap, carbon fiber pole off of Amazon--I don't recall the brand at the moment.
      Remember--you can always sell your gear after the shoot. And if you purchase used--often you can resell it for exactly what you paid. So stretch that dollar as far as you can, and even if you don't think you can afford something, remember: you can look at it as more of a "free rental" after resale and only get gear on project-to-project basis.
      Sound is very important--so definitely try your best to get "good enough" gear and ideally someone who has experience field recording. Get the shotgun as close as possible to your actors.

    Really enjoyed the video. I've had my bmpcc since 2013 and the one issue I've yet to resolve is battery life. I haven't seen many people exploring the Juicebox Magic Power 2.0 and I'm curious if that's because there is something less than ideal about it or if it isn't well known. The price is comparable to the solution you've put in this video and it seems to be more of an all-in-one solution, which I think would be easier for mounting.

The comparison video sounds good and much needed... too many BMD Cam A vs BMD Cam B, not much of an overview of the whole BMD familia. As for the OG specific content, I would suggest you cover the memory card issue (people who don't do their research think it is tough to find cards) and perhaps talk about considerations if people take to the BMD ecology through the OG and want to move onto newer BMD cameras... ie. economics of having an MFT lens collection that are not served well by the newer EF mount cameras.

    Red didn’t promise 4K for $4k when they started. They promised it when they put the Red One body on sale when the Epic came out. It’s misleading to say that they didn’t, because they actually did. The scam was that you still had to pay full price for their accessories.
