"Let there be no doubt about it"
Happy Birthday to Peter Gabriel who was born on this date in 1950.
A revisiting of “Sledgehammer” off of Peter Gabriel’s “So” album which came out in 1986 and featured, the one and only, Tony Levin on bass. “So” would definitely have a slot in my “Top 5 Favorite Albums of All Time” list.
One more day of work and then we’re on vacation for a week. I think I might just sleep through the entire week. I know we've got a Spyro Gyra show on Saturday and then "Mean Girls" on Broadway on Sunday. After that, I'm not sure.
I'm playing the Spector Legend through an EBS OctaBass into a SansAmp YYZ Pedal.
I saw Peter Gabriel live in 2014. Tony Levin's bass was mixed really loud. Sounded amazing and I could feel my seat vibrating.
Very cool!
Tony Levin is such a killer player. I'm not sure many people know this but he played on Buddy Rich's roar of 74 record. He's got jazz chops, rock chops, pop chops and everything in between.
He is, isn't he?
I'm a simple man...I see a Tony Levin bass line, I watch.
Haha... thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@TJH3113 sure thing! Your covers never disappoint!
@@TJH3113 I know this is late, but have you bass covered "Big Time" from the same album (1986)??
Simple but not. Groove so thick you need a knife.
This is sure a fun one to play. Tony Levin really knows how to serve the song indeed! I would love to see your take on Solsbury Hill actually
It is, isn't it?
I'll check it out.
@@TJH3113 Thank you so much man
This is where i learn a lot of covers on bass. This guy is an amazing bassist with great music taste !
That's great to hear! Thanks so much!
That bass sounds absolutely amazing
I"m glad you liked it. Thanks.
This guy's pocket is just sooooooo deep. Sense of timing is impeccable.
Aw, thanks for the kind words.
One of my favourite bass lines. Thanks for posting this! Tony Levin is a genius.
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome bass playing and happy birthday to peter gabriel👍
Thanks!
I always think ‘man, Troy always picks the right bass for the song, sounds amazing’. Then I reality check myself and figure they all have such good tone, it just makes my ears happy regardless. I loved this song when it came out, I was an awkward nerd in grade school with no friends and it felt like Peter Gabriel was saying ‘it’s ok to be weird, look I’m weird and I’m having fun’. It was reassuring. In later years I found out he was a hell of a lot weirder and I’m still a fan. Thanks for this - Troy, and Peter.
Thanks for the great comment.
That playing is so filthy! I'm making the "stink face" jamming along with this lol. Came for the Rush covers, found this gem. I need to pay more attention to the intricacies on this album.
I'm very glad that you liked it. Thanks!
I hope he got songwriting credit on that. What a terrific bass line. It makes the song no doubt.
It would have been nice, but I doubt it. It is, isn't it?
Always loved this bass line. I used to play it on my baritone sax. (Thats how i got into bass)
Me too!
Very cool, I could definitely hear it on a baritone.
NICE!!! Tony Levin is one of the all-time greats. I love that OctaBass sound!
Thanks.
Yes, he is.
It's an oldie, but a goodie.
Great song from one of my favorite albums. The Spector really captures that Tony Levin percussive sound. As usual TJH nails it!
Thanks a lot.
Whenever I start to feel a little cocky about my playing I watch one of your videos and it brings me back down to earth! Thank you!
Oh please....
@@TJH3113 it's true. You are very humbling.
That Spector sounds great- makes me miss my old OC-2 pedal even more now!
For top 5 albums, I agree with your choice of So. 90125 seems to fit that same category too.
Thanks. Yeah, I've had this pedal for well over 20 years now.
@@TJH3113 What pedal would you recomend that you can buy today that sounds as gd
cheers
Another great cover. Well done!
Thanks.
Fantastic. Never realized how much the bass line carries this song.
Thanks.
Yeah, pretty much does all the heavy lifting... along with the horns and the vocals.
It absolutely does, as does the bass on most of "So"
Amazing cover of one of the best bass lines ever! You and the Spector strike again. A fantastic combination!
I'm very glad that you liked it. Thank you.
Your attention to detail on each and every note is wonderful.
I really appreciate your appreciation. Thanks a lot Tony!
About a minute in, I was thinking, "The best bass lines are melodies that stand alone well and don't parrot the main melody." Then you illustrated that perfectly.
Thanks.
Tony Levin sells it!
No doubt.
Super cover on a tune that has always been one of my favorites!
Thanks a lot!
Love it. Great as always.
Thank you! Cheers!
Saw him with king crimson three of a perfect pair tour. On king crimson only song played on the radio, kinda sleepless, while playing that iconic bass riff his strap came off, but we’re thinking that was part of the act anyway King Crimson three of a perfect pair tour was pretty amazing.
I’ll have to check that out.
Awesome work on this very snaky bass line 👍🏻 Love the Rio video as well.
Appreciate it! Thanks.
Totally badass ... I so enjoy and appreciate your videos
I appreciate that!
this almost makes me feel like Guy Pratt sitting for Tony Levin. in a great way. awesome tone
That’s an interesting take on it, which I will take as a complement. Thank you!
Killer sound (ah, the Spector again ; ) Love the OctaBass.
Thanks.
Yeah, I've had that box for over 20 years now.
nice to see you come back to this one, always really liked your old cover.
Yeah, it was one of "those" songs. Thanks.
Funky funky funky!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the beat. Your playing is astonishing Troy!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marvine :-)
Thank you Marvine!
SansAmp YYZ sounds! It really makes a difference
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
100% congratulations!
Thank you very much.
When this song was released I did not care much (likely because of no high speed double bass drum beat with distorted to the max guitars. Now many years later I understand....this is a gem!
I hear you. Glad you came around.
So was the second CD that I bought ever and I bought it when the album came out. Great job as always.
Very cool. Thank you.
I love your covers. I've watched quite a few, and had to doubletake when I saw 2 of your covers for this song. Very groovy!
That's great to hear. Once and a while I'll go back and do an older one over again. Thanks!
Great job Troy, great tone. Who doesn't love this song?
Thank you very much.
Love this song. Great to hear the bass up in the mix light this. Nice.
Awesome, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
Probably my favorite song of all time and it’s great to see you pay such great homage to Tony Levin
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!
I may be late to the party, but I never knew that Tony Levin was originally an upright jazz bassist, he played with the Jazz Brother's (Chuck and Gap Mangione) in a straight ahead bebop setting in the mid 60's (before Chuck went on to play with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and well before "Feels So Good"). Levin transitioned to electric in the early 70's.
I never knew any of that either! Thanks for the education. I saw Tony Levin playing with his brother at a local club a few years ago. He was playing electric upright and they played smooth jazz versions of contemporary songs. Now it makes sense. His brother plays piano.
@@TJH3113 Before there was Sledgehammer there was ... ua-cam.com/video/F0gtCbRIBfo/v-deo.htmlsi=hYnzXMxe6PWVsk5w
Hell yeah
Thanks
Simply excellent
Thanks a lot
Watching your videos makes me want to learn to play bass.
Awesome groove Troy, thank you!
Well I think that you should.
Thanks!
Always been a big fan of Peter.....I'm attempting bass.....gots to practice more...you make it look so easy....🙄😏
A great way to spend lockdown time. Corona made me pick up the bass and watching these videos inspires a lot
Nice octave effect, sounds very tight, not muddy at all.
I'm glad you liked it. At the time that I got it, well over 20 years ago, it was considered to be one of the best.
Snap on 'So' and 'Mercy Street' has top spot on the album. Interestingly enough, bass was played by Larry Klein on that track and not the ubiquitous Tony Levin. Subtle and understated (not sure if it is a fretless) but for me, combined with Gabriel's haunting vocals, it anchors the song perfectly.
Yeah, that's a beautiful song, along with "Don't Give Up".
Troy, sometimes I watch a video 3 or 4 times per sit as your playing is mind blowing. I am still in awe of it. Thanks Troy!!!!!
Thanks Marvine.
Excellent!
Thanks!
Sooo groovy, very good !
Thank you.
gooood one
thank yoooou
I've always liked Tony Levin's bass lines (sadly, I didn't know he played on this song). Great job Troy!!
Don't give up from this album is great as well.
Thanks a lot!
When I started record collecting this was the first album I bought. I know it's not rare by any stretch, but it's always one that I can listen to in it's entirety. Keep on chugging Troy!
- a loooooong time subscriber
Very cool!
I'll try.
Yes, always nice to see an old name pop up.
wow excellent, just shows what a genius Tony Levin is composing that fantastic bass part. Brilliant playing - well done
Thanks.
Yes, Tony knows what he's doing.
You my friend rock! Thank you!!!
Thanks so much!
YES!!! Love Tony Levin and PG. PG was my 1st big concert 1983 Shock the Monkey Tour at San Jose Civic, I was 13. Awesome show. Watched a guy go through a ridiculously large bag of coke through the whole show, I don’t think he saw any of the show, just sat on the floor dipping a match book in over and over. Thank you so much for the extra at the end. Gonna try it when I get home. ENJOY YOUR VACATION!!!!
Sounds like you have some pretty awesome stuff planned so far. Have fun and rest. Thank you for being AWESOME
Very cool! I've never seen him live but have always heard that he puts on a great production.
"Mean Girls" was so-so. The music and production was great and it had tons of potential, I just don't think they capitalized on what they had. It's still better than working though.
TJH3113 So many things are better than working. Glad your enjoying yourself. “Fair” musicals are still music. We went to Evil Dead the musical last month, the weekend before my b day, it was soooo fun. 1/2 musical 1/2 GWAR show.
The PG shows look like they get bigger and bigger, I was amazed by his energy. In 83 he had monkey bars and you never had to wonder why, amazing energy.
Have a magical week Fonzy.
Wow, an Evil Dead musical? I'd go to that. A few years back, Lynn bought me/us tickets to see "American Psycho- The Musical" on Broadway. I wasn't all too familiar with the movie, but it was actually a great show.
TJH3113 That sounds fun I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.
Yea, look up Evil Dead The Musical. They were here in San Jose Ca. I’m the middle of January Diana bought me tix for Xmas and took me the weekend before my 50th. They tour every year, it’s a lot of fun. They have “splatter zone” seats and you get pretty wet with red cool-aide, the night we went they had 4-“youre fucked” seats and we took 2. They go out of there way to slowly drown you. I would have been dryer if I hid in a swimming pool. They were really nice to us and thanked us for being “good sports”. It was definitely the most fun I ever had at a musical.
Yes !!! Loved the ending,... really like that lil muted spit sound 😄 lol
Thanks.
Sound is absolutely SLAYING. And playing off the hook as usual. Thanks for making another crappy week less crappy T.
Thanks a lot, I'm very glad that you liked it and hope your week has improved since you wrote your comment.
The cover itself is amazing, but your languid finger technique should be taught to every bass guitarist. Thanks for taking the time to share your gift.
Thank so much, Sanjay. It took a bit to process your comment (I even had to look up the definition of "languid"), but I humbly accept your compliment. Long ago I adopted, what I called, an "economy of motion" method in many aspects of my life. Not out of laziness, but from a standpoint of efficiency... no wasted energy or unnecessary motion. I'm flattered you observed that and commented on it. Take care, my friend.
Thanks again, Troy. You are the number 1.
Aw, thanks so much.
Awesome Troy!......my wife and I had the pleasure of having lunch with Tony a few years ago at a Chapman Stick convention in LA. He was the coolest cat. He showed us some cool stick licks including Elephant Talk.....priceless!
Thanks. That is awesome!
AMAZING!
THANK YOU!
Man... I really enjoy your music... I kind of feel connected to your high in these vids... I've been watching you more and more lately... more than the original artists to be honest... You kind of bring some unique Troy stuff I simply can't explain... I just enjoy it!
Thanks Daniel. I appreciate the kind words. Thanks again and take care.
Levin used a fretless with a pick, BUT using a octaver like you did is always an alternative. Nice tone
Yes, but he also used an Octave Box on this one. Thanks.
Always loved the booming bass line in the song. You did it real justice. Well done.
Me too! Thank you.
Excellent and outstanding performance and a nice looking PJ bass! Sounds awesome my dude good work!
Thank you very much.
Nathan you crush it...thanks for the memories!
Thanks a lot!
Classic Peter Gabriel I love this one
I’m glad you liked it, thanks Natalia!
Well done !!
Thank you !!
Really great bass tone here.
Glad you like it!
That's pure grease. Love that bass line. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot.
Love this! My favorite bass line of any song!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Love this!
I can’t wait to try it now!
Thanks!
So is such a great album, I just listened to it for the first time yesterday. I went in only knowing Sledgehammer and came out with Red Rain as my favourite. Cracking album.
Definitely! "Big Time" is cool and I love "Don't Give Up" and "Mercy Street" as well.
That sounds amazing! I never realized what a cool bass line that was lol. You always help me to hear things differently ❤️️😊❤️️
Thank you very much. I appreciate the kind words.
@@TJH3113 Kind words for a kind man lol
I love your videos Troy! You never disappoint.
I'm happy to hear that. Thanks.
you are brilliant , thanks for posting this
You're very welcome
Wooow so cool. I've been obsessed with this song
Thanks. Yeah, it’s an incredible song, isn’t it?
The funk is oozing out of that bass, keep it up my good man Troy, thanks.
I guess it is, isn't it? Thanks!
I've said this already. It's a real pleasure looking at your left hand technique. 💯
Thanks. I think it's a bit flawed, but it has actually improved a bit over the years. When I first started the channel, I rarely, if ever, used my pinky. It's worked its way in a bit.
Hey, hey, you: Bravo, another home run cover! Thanks for posting this video, the parts that eluded me now fall in the "ohhh - so that's what's happening" category and I got it all locked down after a couple hours. Keep on keepin on brother!
Wow, thank you!
This is cool man.
Thanks!
Lovely! one of my favorite glove-fit baselines. thanks.
Thank, I'm glad you liked it.
I had to get up and dance before that was over. Thank you!
Wonderful! Hope you enjoyed it.
And Happy Birthday to THEATREofPAIN270 who was also born on this day February 13th in 1970. 😎 I'd say I'm in good company. Excellent cover my good dude. I was 16 when this came out and man did it get solid radio play on Q104.3 out of Manhattan NYC. Was also a pretty cool video too. Enjoy your week off coming up.
Awesome! I hope you had a great birthday!
Thanks a lot.
Yeah, "Mean Girls" was so-so.
@@TJH3113 Well I had what I hope was my last back surgery (#7) for my 50th birthday 😜. No fun but I did take in a ton of music. Music Helps Heal. Thanks for the well wish. 👍
Eesh... I hope it brings you some relief. Feel better!
@@TJH3113 Thanks Troy. Most appreciated.
Another instant classic cover from Troy!
You think?
Thanks.
Yes!! SMOOTH!!!
Thanks!
Superb performance!!
Thank you!
Cool!
Thank you!
Very good cover my friend))
Thank you very much.
You are the best, Troy. I forgot to write please. Many thanks.
No worries!
Heck baby play that bass baby
Haha... I'm tryin'.
Funkin’ Groovin’
Thanks.
Love it! Who knew this was so funky..........
Thanks!
Very nice! But good lord man! That Spector is a beauty
Thanks. Yeah, it's one of my favorites (as well as one of the least expensive).
You are the real deal. I use many of your vids to comp lines I miss in translation. Not to mention that I openly steal your fine fills. Thank you, sir.
Wow, thanks! Be my guest!
Great cover one of the underrated bass lines. It’s so good
Thanks a ton!
Love the sound your getting with that Spector,.. great song too,.. ❤️
Thank you Cindy.
ah time for me to steal a few licks from this one... thank you.
Help yourself.
Very cool!
Thanks a lot!
Another perfect song , flawlessly done ! The bassline carries the song -- obviously -- but I think the main thing that does the extra trick is the Octabass. What a fricken nasty fat rubbery tone ! Awesome !
Thank you Laszlo! Yes, the bass absolutely makes this song.
