Thank you so much for discussing genetic predisposition to dark undereyes. I inherited very deep-set eyes with *extremely* dark circles from my mother, who was Eastern European & Lebanese, *both* of which are ethnicities are heavily prone to significant pigmentation around the eyes. But rather than inheriting her olive complexion (which I think modern Western "beauty standards" are at least somewhat accepting of as being more a more "complimenting" skintone of that hyperpigmation), I inherited my Scottish & Irish father's much *much* more fair "cool undertone" complexion. So the added contrast has always caused my circles to have been extremely pronounced & "bruised" looking, even when I was a child. I've long known & understood that in my case it was hereditary, not an indication of me being "sickly" or "over-tired" as casual observers often take it upon themselves to comment on unsolicited, but sometimes it just feels very validating & affirming for medical professionals to remind the world of that. So thank you again.
Easter European usually have no pigmentation under eyes at all. Eastern Europeans have very fair skin, not much sun and eye circles are very rare, given a healthy lifestyle.

Hi Shereene, love your videos :) is it possible to put 'example pictures' when describing each condition (ie herniated fat pads, puffy underlies etc). It may seems self explanatory, but it really helps to have a clear image of what is being described at each stage. lots of love and looking forward to many more videos from you x
Bless you for this video! My dad has been trying everything he can find to reduce the “extreme puffiness” under his eyes (he is 86 and worried that it was a medical problem of some sort). Hearing your description of herniated fat pads, I can now explain to him what they are (my grandpa had them also) and calm his worry about why he has them and he can realize that they are (thanks genetics) something normal for him and not something wrong! So very glad I found your channel!!!!!
So much helpful in depth information. I feel like I’m someone that gets sucked into eye creams not knowing which ingredients are good for what or believing that in order to get a certain look I need some type of cosmetic treatment. It is so so helpful to have someone honestly and completely explain ingredients and what they do as well as explaining the realistic expectations from certain products or ingredients. It’s equally as refreshing to have you explain what different cosmetic procedures do and when they are necessary as well as normalizing these things instead of them being some sort of “taboo” for most people. And the background info on why or how you have certain issue is so freaking incredible. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
What an amazing overview of this issue! I have struggled with under eye darkness since i was a teenager and although i have done much research and even asked dermatologists about it, (i have gotten some good advice along the way) i have never gotten a comprehensive understanding of what the problem could/ could not be, and how to best address it with realistic expectations. There is just so much noise out there in the skincare world. THANK YOU!
I just love that pink sweater and shirt, and they really look good on you! As someone who probably has all under eye problems apart from pigmentation, I really appreciated this video. I had fillers under the eyes done years ago, by a very unprofessional provider, and it resulted in strange looking bags under the eyes. Nobody wanted to remove them, saying that hyaluronic acid should go away on it´s own with time and that hyaluronidase would melt my own tissue. Finally, over 2 years later one doctor accepted to remove them, such a relief. I´ve been suggested to try fat instead but I´ve been reluctant as I´m worried about anything that´s not possible to resolve if there´s a problem, I´m glad to hear your explanation about why fat injections should be avoided.
I’m so glad you mentioned we can use Tretinoin under the eyes!! What a relief. I always wanted the anti-aging benefit but was told not to use under the eyes. Yay!! Such an excellent video
I'd love a video on combining treatments for different problems (mine are: sagging, wrinkles, dark spots, KP, congested pores at T zone...). What things are good to do together, what to space out am and PM and day to day. There is great info on what ingredients/actives to use, but not on how to combine so they're working together. I know this may be very involved and better with a personal dermatologist, but I've never seen much on multiple problem concurrent treatments so thought it might make good content that a lot of people have questions about.
I just found your channel last night and I’m so incredibly stuck on you now lol I’ve been into trying new skin care products since I was 19 to try and prevent aging as much as possible. @@shereeneidriss how do we apply retinol under the eyes? Is it the same way you would apply an under eye cream? And, can it be the regular one you put all over your face, or a special one?
@@vazq_Fernanda you didn't ask me but I use a specific one for the eyes by Avene called A oxitive (retinal in the USA) and it was recommended by Dr Dray
@@vazq_Fernanda Dr. Shereene put Vaseline Petroleum Jelly under her eyes before lightly patting the retinoid on top. Don't go near your eyes, though. She only put it at the lower half of her eye bag area.
So, I think my major cause of dark circles is the second one. My under eyes are so dark a purple that they look black. When tilting my head back with direct light, it does lighten up a bit- but not entirely. I also have pretty extreme under eye hollows- because the fat bit that starts at my nose and continues to my cheeks is very prominent. So they look black, and I’ve found no concealer or colour corrector that fixes it. And I’ve tried pretty much everything. But I haven’t tried caffeine or vitamin K, so I’ll give those a go. Fillers aren’t an option for me (I’ve heard they can help), because it’s just far too expensive, and budget skin care is as much as I can shell out for. But I’ll definitely put the Inkey List caffeine eye cream on my to buy list!

Hearing your description of herniated fat pads, I can now explain to him what they are (my grandpa had them also) and calm his worry about why he has them and he can realize that they are (thanks genetics) something normal for him and not something wrong! So very glad I found your channel!!!!!
I love this doctor. A dermatologist we all needed ❤️😭
I agree, she's my favourite! :)
Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
❤️🙌❤️🙌❤️🙌 thank you!!!!
This has been the BEST source of information about under eye color and puffiness I have come across. It was the unbiased information I wanted. Thanks.
I just found your channel last night and I’m so incredibly stuck on you now lol
I’ve been into trying new skin care products since I was 19 to try and prevent aging as much as possible. Now that I’m 36 and watching you, you’re making me question a lot of what I thought I knew about skin care lol
I SOOOO appreciate how you explain everything, what works and what doesn’t, etc. thank you for what you do and I will continue soaking up all of your knowledge ❤️❤️
alhamdulillah🤲💜 you made this video.
my under eye dark circle,is genetic,
i put tretinoin every night, now i am not
scared anymore,thanks a lot.❤️
How is your dark circles now, did they fade away?
Very well said. I've been searching regarding how to fix some under-eye issues and this was the only video that talks the right thing. Thank you for this :).
I love how honest and direct you are!
This was so helpful! After watching this I was able to determine that most of my dark circle issues were due to pigmentation and tried a niacinamide cream. Noticed a difference pretty quickly. Thank you!

Just discovered your channel yesterday and have binge watched like 8 episodes since then! I absolutely love how you explain things and that your recommendations are evidence-based! So thank you for sharing this with us!! You mentioned pore refinement briefly in one of your other videos, the tip about rose water, and so I wonder whether you could do a full video on how to deal with larger than desirable pores? x
As someone who works in the scientific field, I am dismayed by the lack of reasoning behind {potentially dangerous} trending beauty hacks. Yet, I hold on to hope because of beautiful souls like Dr. Idriss, who provide actionable advice such as switching AM Antihistamine to PM. Genius!
A doctor so pretty and with such great skin gains my total trust in her field :3
You are absolutely a truthful Doctor. Whatever fillers, it may not or will not completely dissolve as they claimed to be. So over time, one who constantly having fillers in the face will in some point may look wonky or weird or not natural especially when one's reached certain age when the skin has lesser density. Very scary indeed
You're such a wonderful source of information. When you're really clear about specific ingredients, like in the Vitamin C video, it helps me better understand the p oducts I'm looking at. Love your passion!
Thank you!!!
Thank you. Finally I get the answers to my questions in an honest, knowledgeable way that I understand. I'm hooked on your videos because your candor and facial expressions have me laughing and learning. Merci
I just love your content so much. You're like a thousand times more informative than every other "skincare guru" on youtube. PLEASE do a video on retinol!!
I’m glad you talk about genetics I’m mixed heritage, Jamaican, British/ West Indian/ African and I’m very Hispanic looking and we have very dark under eyes ♥️ I feel shocking when people comment on them x
The colorscience total eye tinted is the only sunscreen i can where on my eyes..expensive but worth it!
I know ugh I’m trying to find a dupe but I can’t
Its not available in Europe 😭😭😭
FI I love it too! Try the eye sunscreen from Goop. I think it is a great dupe (a least for my fair skin - it only comes in one peachy / pink color). It cost less and last a lot longer. I think it’s call bright eyes (it’s upstairs

You can talk for hours and I'll never get bored. More power!!
Awww thank tou!!!!
Me either! I love Sat with Dr Shereene!
That was a lot of valuable information! So many things I’ve never heard of that I could have been trying over the years. My eyes have really taken a toll on my self esteem. Your videos not only give honest advice but remind us that this is normal aging & there’s nothing wrong with it, in addition to products or in office procedures available.
Thank you!!!!!
Really helpful, been a major issue for me. After covid restrictions lift, you've encouraged me to speak to a derm about this. Keep making videos, they're informative and your presentation skills are deeply engaging!
Awww thank you!!
I didn’t even notice that you were hitting the table until you said something! I love your style and how laidback/real you are. It’s like talking to a really smart friend 💙

My great grandmother was native and everyone since then on that side of the family has had dark circles and my pale blue undertoned skin makes it show terrrribly. I know it isn’t completely fixable, but these tips help improve it to some extent. Thank you 😊
Please talk about tips for frizzy hair! I hear different things on silicones, oils, sulfates, etc. nothing I do helps my thick wavy hair 😭
Checking the dew point and using products accordingly. Flaxseed gel (costs a few cents)
try CGM. there are wavies who do this method
@@randomcarrot7970 waivies should always cleanse/clarify. It's good to understand science and switch products but wavies are not curlies...
I hate my frizzy hair. But Loreal Elseve leave in conditioner with castor oil is really good. Give it a try.

I have learned so much from you Dr. Shereene. Any topic about healthy skin is gold for me. Listening to your advice and seeing how passionate you are about your message and information, it makes a smile in my heart. Hello Dr. Shereene, happy Saturday! could you please do a video on preventive botox? And when its the right time to start thinking about cosmetic procedures? (i.e. botox, fillers, etc) Thank you!
On it 🤓
Great suggestion! I’d love a video on those topics!
@@shereeneidriss can you give me the link to this video if you have it up already?
That was the most informative and helpful video on undereye bags. I went to a dermatologist about mine and he didn't even try to determine what type they were. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It's much appreciated.
I just found you yesterday and you are so inspiring to me! I'm finishing school for estheticians (just currently on pause because of the virus) and I've been feeling really lost lately in regards to my career path and stuff like that. But seeing you on this channel speaking about these topics so enthusiastically and correctly (which is the most important) I'm starting to really enjoy this career field again, so thank YOU for that. :) I guess I was just tired of all these teenaged so called "skincare specialists" without actually being one, so yeah. Love this channel! So happy you decided to start making videos!
I never realized how much I rubbed my eyes, and not gently, until the day after I saw your video. Thanks for all your good information.

after seeing you put retinol under eyes I've started doing the same and the area does seem healthier looking! thanks for the excellent video doctor! still watching as I type this haha

I just discovered your channel. You’re such a pleasure to watch. Keep going.
Thank YOU!
Thank you SOO much!! I'm 34 and have started seeing shadowing under my eyes and was trying to figure out what's the eye cream for me and you REALLY answered my question! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

Currently loving Nivea’s Q10 power antiwrinkle firming eyecream, Im in my twenties and Ive tried eye creams from estee lauder, the ordinary, skin ceutical and khiels, they didnt do anything noticeable. But the nivea one brightens and smoothens so well!
Give us all your knowledge. you will definitely NOT bore us!!
I wish this video was around 20 years ago. I had the worst dark circles when I was a teen. My skin was always very translucent, you could literally see the veins under my eyes. I used to be so frustrated because I would shop for eye cream and it would all be for pigmentation. There was nothing out there for vasculature. As I have gotten older, my dark circles have gone away, thank goodness! Now I just have to worry about fine lines and my acne.
Did you lose the veins as well?

Hi Shereene!!! Thanks for your explanations, they're simple and useful! I have sensitive, combination skin, with genetic predisposition to sun spots. As you've already talked about pigmentation, maybe next time we could talk more about pores? How to clean and minimize them? Thanks
Lobe ur suggestion
I pm 41 and have very thin, light skin and believe my dark circles are from allergies and being able to see the blood vessels. I’ve stopped trying to completely cover them, and more try to reflect off them. That has helped as the thick colors and formulas don’t set in and make it look worse. Recently I’ve started using The Ordinary Buffet + Copper peptides and hello! My undereyes are looking so good. Most sure what’s happening there, but I’m keeping it up.
I really enjoy the way you explain things in your videos. It makes it easy to understand for non-professionals! :)
That’s the goal 🙌🙌
