My dad's first job at 14 was making these for a ship's chandler in Liverpool, 1941. He was paid 2 shillings each but was only allowed to make 4 per 8hr day, because they can't be rushed..
This just came up on my UA-cam recommend list...amazing! I've had a passion for knotwork since the Scouts awesome video excellent editing my hats off to you sir. I bid you peace and happiness.
Thank you for this. As a boy scout, some 50 odd years ago, I learned to do many things like this and I loved the rope work. Tonight I started working on what I was taught to call a Marlinspike Macrame wrapped bottle
Can you do a video of a fender with two eyes? I am having trouble figuring that out. I make my fenders like you did in this video but need to have an eye on both ends.
Robert Romaine I would imagine you could take those first two strands, and rather than have the ends be together at the bottom, put them end to end in the middle and then serve it with twine.
I had thought to make the center piece out of a rope grommet. That would give you one solid piece of rope from eye to eye and no worries about a serving in the middle being puled loose, however, you'd have to do your weaving around the outside with new rope unraveled. Another option would be to tie the fender just like you see here, but use a double-length filler piece as your second eye. Instead of cutting a bunch of filler ropes to 25cm like shown, leave one about 60cm and double it over. That'd give you the two strands stuck in the middle for padding and the eye sticking out the other end to match the eye like Mikko shows. Doe that make sense?
Great tutorial and excellent taste in music! can I ask what type of rope would be best to withstand sea water without being too harsh on the wood? Thanks.
the little I know about knot work, but the wall knot is the same as the crown knot, just upside down. I find the crown know easier so can I just turn this around and tie the crown knot? Also I'm love the MWK so if I left a longer loop, could this be finished with a MWK? Instead of splicing?
In a reply to another comment, you mentioned that you starched your rope to prevent strand ends from fraying. Can you describe your starching process? (Apologies if you already have, elsewhere.) I recently made two matching rope fenders following this video. Thank you for sharing your craft & your art.

Sir, i really love your work. Señor, yo realmente amo su trabajo.
I like to watch your video because it's very clear your procedure and I love it.
Thanks for the video, hopefully trying a few of these passes some time during lock down
That's very nice. Everything is made the old way is nice.
That's beautiful!!!
Good Job!!! you are so good !
Amazing work

With little practice, it is 😁
excellent walkthrough!! i can do this!!

I'm fairly knew to the world of knots but that under two wall knot is going to be very usefull. Mnay thanks for a gtreat tutorial.
Love it!
When I was a kid I used to make key chains out of string this very same way.
Hallo Mikko,
vielen Dank für die tollen Videos! Grüße aus Germany, Georg
A beautifully crafted knot/s.
Muy lindo trabajo. Debo reconocer que no entendía de que se trataba. Los tangos de diez, muy tanos por cierto.
Muito obrigado !

Coir would be best but even good quality manila works fine. For softer fibers hemp or flax.

Sure you can finish with any design you like. If you crown the fender upside down, do it clockwise, to keep the lay in strands even.

Great video. What did you use to cut the knots without them fraying?
I starch the rope before cutting with sharp puukko.
who originally figured out this method? it can't have turned out well on the first try, nice job
This is the old way of doing fenders of old rope. Of course you need practice to get everything even.
How the ?
👏👏👏
👌🏾👍🏽
Perdón por mi ignorancia,qué es y para que sirve ?
My foot has been here
Very nice fender. One question, wich length of rope did you used? Or which is the relation between the rope (before bending) and the fender. Thanks.
That all depends but you come quite close with strands that are 6 times the fender length.
mikko snellman thanks

Basically you just cook some corn starch and soak the rope. Coming up later in detail to my Ko-fi page. ko-fi.com/ropeworks
What is that a Wacker of some sort
Made one from old rope found on a beach..bit skinny .should have made around a core of somekind😁
Old rope gives nice character to the fender.
Couldn't you make a pine cone Christmas decoration using this method and stitch, with a fine gauge jute rope? Will you show us how?
Good idea! Will have to make a design.
Nice thing! Has It any practical use, ore simple decorative item?
Boat fenders are used in almost all boats to protect them from chafing.
@@mikkosnellman Thank!
I’m wondering if you could do a video on how to wrap a lacing needle container?
Yes, coming up.

Are rope fenders painted or oiled in anyway? Thanks in advance.
That depends on the material. For hemp I suggest impregnating with pine tar.
