Love this video!! Watched this with hubby who is now eager to give this a go!!! Not bought a boat yet..... have plenty of time to practice this!!! These are not cheap tp buy so a cracking idea!!
You can tell a man who knows working with his hands! Not once did you stop with hand cramps!🤣🤣 I'm sure all future boaters will know the Hockley Hook! Stay safe friends!
Thank you this instructive video! I've just made my first rope fender and it came out just the way I was hoping for. I'll make 5 more fenders for my boat in the, same manner.
Flog em canalside for some extra cash! Stop by a cabinet makers shop for scraps of ply and use sections of old mooring lines for the fenders. Brilliant mate, gives me a few more ideas to fund some time on the cut. Love the vids,
A Brilliant knot Mark ! I can see you doing the Bow and Stern fenders soon, I look forward to that Video. The adjustable Fender Cleat is also very clever, and SHOULD be patented, (as a "do it yourself" cleat). Hope you make a fortune ! More Nautical videos like this one please !
Well I've looked at a lot of tube video's on making the side fender, and I have to say that yours is the one to follow, I just had that light bulb moment. Thank for making it look so easy.
I can remember my dad making fenders and looped ends on ropes etc when I was young (I'm 60 now). He was so fast it was hard to follow the steps. Even to this day I can't look at a rope without thinking "dad would have tidied that up." Thanks for helping me remember a nice memory about my dad.
Great video thanks. I'm in Australia but originally from Suffolk. Your accent sounds like a Suffolk chap? I watched 1st as I'm looking at doing fenders for our boat( disappointed they don't have narrow boats here) was my dream to live like you in the UK. I shall make these. Love the hook! Cheers from the tropics 🏝️
Very interesting and not only do you have a useful item at the end; you also got a workout!! The process is very similar to crochet. What a excellent idea for an “adjustable” fender hook👍🏻
Great video. You have done one of the best ones for showing how to make a rope fender. Most are abit harder to understand. I have shown it to a few people and they were surprised on how easy it is to make them.
Hi Mark Really interesting. Next up is a tipcat. I liked the sound of Phil English. Makes me think of breakfast. Your fender hook was brilliant. How about putting a backsplice in the rope instead of a half hitch. It would look neater, I think. Keep making the vlogs. You cover things that other vlogs do not. Jeff
Once again great video very interesting and keeping with tradition . I presume your next'Not how too how I do' will be making a' Plaited rope buffer' and will appear in a week or two maybe lol.. Why buy when you can make it yourself, love the fender hook idea too.
Well like the pub landlord, Al Murray would say good English measurements , you get iced in you’ll be making tea cozy’s and placemats out that rope , this is pretty cool, good on ya.
Great work. Those fenders turned out nice. Those DIY hooks are brilliant. Everyone is going to be sending in for Mark's Master Fenders and Deluxe Hooks.
well done l was given a gift of the Tradeline kit a couple of years ago,and haven't bought a fender since. It's very satisfying using something you have made. Simple idea on the hooks like it
Excellent job on making the fenders and your wooden fender hooks absolutely bang on what a simple ,but great idea I bet lots of people would buy those!
You could sell those fender hooks. We'd buy some. Genuinely, that was one of the most informative vlogs I've seen on any of the narrowboat themes. I'm going to have a crack at making them fenders. Happy New Year to you both and happy cruising
Very neat and clever tips. They look great! When I was a very young Merchant Navy Navigator Apprentice, we were taught various splicing techniques. The hardest was splicing large wire hawsers. All forgotten now though!
Really enjoyed seeing you 'getting knotted' and what an ingenious idea for the fender hook. I actually said, 'well done' at the end...so never put yourself down mate. You are a good learner and patient and teach well ...there isn't that better self talk :)
Butchers Hooks are quite useful for hanging things up available from a traditional butchers or on line shop. A very interesting vid especially the fender hook idea.
Yet another fantastic “how I do” video Mark. I love the way you show all the steps clearly and your fender hook ….. just fabulous. Completed in the best possible way, with chuckles from Debs in the background. Happy days 😀 Keep all your various videos coming, they are excellent. Best wishes Helen x
Making fender hooks, weaving rope fenders ,varnishing🤔,I can see your going to need a “man shed butty “ 🤗....keep it up guys a good tutorial ,Happy New Year
Binge watching all your vlogs and I love them all. Those how I do it ones are brilliant thank you so much for sharing your experiences. subscribed because I don’t want to miss a single episode. Your both such lovely people thank you x
Nice craftsmanship on both the fender and the fender clip. Seems many narrowboaters have side businesses. I don’t know how many purveyors of fenders there are but I would think you could definitely sell the clips in 4 packs and likely in complete sets with fenders. Curious, do all narrowboats with the style of roof edge (not a grab rail) have the same size edge where the clip sits?
Don't sell yourself short Mark, not every "imbecile" would have the wherewithal or the discipline and patience to research and acquire the skills required to 'craft their own fenders. Looking forward to the new buttons for the stern, and button with wings for the bow (now see what you started - lol) Good job mate, 'smart as a button stick'.
Good job well done I love making stuff rather than buying. My dad made adapting things an art, my mum said he was a bodger but he always made things work in the end. Cheers guys hope you are keeping well and warm. Alan.
Really good, might be worth adding some material to the 'patents pending' model to make it kinder to paintwork. Fender excellent, and satisfying to make, am envious as I only have normal inflatable ones. I guess you will be onto Button fenders next. Have a good New Year and look forward to more blogs.
Love this video!! Watched this with hubby who is now eager to give this a go!!! Not bought a boat yet..... have plenty of time to practice this!!! These are not cheap tp buy so a cracking idea!!
Its quite easy, that was my first time and its so rewarding👍
Thumbs up is not a string enough reaction. I love that these fenders are still made of rope and really enjoyed seeing you make one.
👍😁
You can tell a man who knows working with his hands! Not once did you stop with hand cramps!🤣🤣 I'm sure all future boaters will know the Hockley Hook! Stay safe friends!
Cheers Roger, worked with my hands all my life👍
Excellent! A Keep teaching so this doesn't become a lost art!! Most people just go to the store.
Nothing like the satisfaction of making your own
Don't have a narrowboat - and probably never will- but I am going to get some rope and a fid and have at it. Well done.
Steve Potter good for you 👍
Thank you this instructive video!
I've just made my first rope fender and it came out just the way I was hoping for. I'll make 5 more fenders for my boat in the, same manner.

Well I've looked at a lot of tube video's on making the side fender, and I have to say that yours is the one to follow, I just had that light bulb moment. Thank for making it look so easy.
Wow, thanks!
A man has got to do. What a man has to do. Awesome book

Another example of Britain going metric inch by inch. :-)
Well Deck Diaries , pretty common here in Canada as well.
Great vlog. Great idea for fender hooks. It’s now on my project list for the new boat. Assuming Patent is still pending with the Patent Office.
Ha Ha, indefinitely pending 🤣
What a fab little invention you have made Mark, get selling them for more beer money. Fab idea!
This is just a age old skill that I have learned from watching others
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. Well done. 💐💐

Jeff
🤣😂 I wouldn't know a back slice from a half hitch even if you whipped me round the head with one
I liked that Mark, well done
Thanks 👍
Thanks so much Mark, this video really helped me with making my own fenders.
Glad it helped!

Loved the title....tickled me,I will admit UA-cam as been a massive knowledge base to me for DIY
Might teach my self Brain Surgery 🤣🤣

took me back to my merchant navy days as a deckhand!!! I really enjoyed the vlog!!
Bet you was dealing with bigger ropes though?
@@welldeckdiaries5610 Just a wee bit bigger!!!
I live in NZ, don't have a boat and know nothing about ropes and fenders. And yet I want to have a go at this for some reason. Great job.
its infectious
I live in Michigan, US on Lake Michigan and I’m wondering if those could be sold to boaters here...

Making fender hooks, weaving rope fenders ,varnishing🤔,I can see your going to need a “man shed butty “ 🤗....keep it up guys a good tutorial ,Happy New Year
The boss has said no to a butty😩
You truly need that butty . As we all know , narrowboats DON'T have basements!!!! LOL
