you can read more about it if you search for "perspective transformation in image processing". I'm really impressed by the quality tho. This technique has many uses in auto industry (car lane detection, 360° car view, etc). It also is used in AR.
A lot of articles were saying that this works with iPhone 8 or above, but that seems to be incorrect. iPhone 8 seems to be the last version that WON"T work with this.
This if anything is worse for them I have a 2018 MacBook Air that works great but the webcam is terrible I was considering upgrading but will now hold off thanks to this feature.
Software such as ManyCam existed before that did this exact thing by sending a video stream via the internet to the cloud (now can we use AirPlay to take video without an internet connection?)
he did say it works with any Mac @ 1:23, so I would assume so. So Belkin and third party companies would need to make stands that fit all/most monitor widths.
Have you heard about Facebook portal, they have this feature for last 5 years 😀😂the way apple makes this video , it almost sounds like they have landed on Mars using an iphone 😂
Wut? There already is a webcam there, but it’s 1080p. Perfectly reasonable for video conference, but some people want higher resolution. That’s why they came up with the iPhone add-on
Sure, Desk view is cool, BUT consider the WEIGHT of the phone on your laptop screen. What if someone uses a 12/13/14 max phone and case, and then that clip thing? Wouldn't that be a little top heavy?
I love how mac acts like none of us have a phone case. Even the stuff like... Now the Iphone is in green. Or red! WOW that is going to looks so amazing in my black case.
To be fair. Apple has always suggested there is no real need for a case. And they are more robust than you think. But we still spend billions on hideous plastic monstrosities to cover up their beauty - and usually offering no actual real-life additional protection.
lol don't you know you can answer calls on your MacBook or IPad or Apple Watch or EarPods or Apple TV or HomePod mini? it's called ecosystem for a reason.
They've always told users not to put anything on the macs and how they have a magnet rest on the screen for a heavy iPhone. I will be buying a dedicated stand and use desk view. I can see that over time, the stress on the display will eventually ruin my investment. Also, with this, I would like them to remove the built in web came all together. I've been asking for this since the 2013 Retina MBPs. We all have phones now with superior camera systems. Give us a notchless all screen display already. Right ?
In real life the video quality, continuity and desk view are not very good with this set up. I have a new iPhone 14 Pro, new MacBook Air M2 and the official docking station for the camera mount, and desk view requires an absurd amount of light, it doesnt show your keyboard, it shows where your lap would be, no real use for it unless you're in a school setting showing off. As for continuity camera, it is NOT seamless. You have to manually select the camera you want to automatically connect to when opening FaceTime or any other video app, like Photos, Zoom, etc. Strangely UA-cam does not work with continuity at all. Not even a selection for a camera but it will use the mic from the iPhone. When you then load into FaceTime or other apps, it will automatically select your iPhone camera because you programmed it to do that. Even though the setting says "Automatically Select Camera" it doesnt.
I always wonder why people put fake show on like that almost like they’re reading from a script as they’re talking why can’t you talk normally like you know what you’re saying it’s almost like you have no clue what you are doing so I can amateur video I get that it’s probably to the point and so everybody can understand what really come on
What!??!? Should've bundled a quality FaceTime camera in the new MacBook Air/Pro Notch instead, no? What happens to Software and Hardware working together? This turns out now to be a software workaround and ignoring Hardware 😵 ugly.
I doubt there are any computer on the market that has the advance capabilities of camera phones. You see how big the camera bumps are on these phones? I'm sure the "notch" would have to be way bigger in order to put that good of a camera system in a macbook, or any laptop for that matter. But I'm sure Apple, and other companies are working on this technology for future macbooks and laptops that would have a smaller footprint. I like the idea of being able to use my phone as a webcam for my mac mini, since I don't have a macbook, and I do have an extra iPhone.
This is so outdated... flipping your phone at the back and placing on top of a laptop... Even the days of external webcam are over... This is laughable apple
This has been done before nothing new Had this feature on android with an app I can’t really remember again apple just borrowed the idea from them 😒 not impressed expected something new from them but they keep slacking off
This loooks WAY toooo OLD! Looks like a webcam from the early 2000’s ! You can’t even use your cellphone at the same time! Why don’t they just improve the camera or create a software INSIDE the computer?
Stupid idea. If I want to use my phone then I have to take it off and this won’t work. Many of us on web meetings use our computers while also using our phones. If I want better quality video then I have to buy a good quality webcam or go back forth with my phone. Rather than clipping our phone to the laptop or monitor Apple should just improve the quality of the existing webcam on their laptops and monitors. Fire the engineer or executive who came up with this idea and approved it.
This is simply a more resourceful idea since the majority of Macbook owners already own an iPhone and it's a way of getting users into the Apple Ecosystem, not to mention implementing a better quality webcam then the iPhone's main cameras in such a thin bezel is near impossible. This is a miles better solution and the technology behind desk-view is literally unbeliveably complex.
How is it stupid? And besides, you have a Mac, you already have your Messages etc. on your computer, so why would you want to use your tiny phone screen + you don’t have to use it, and they improved the built in webcam anyways.
there is still a webcam. In fact, on the new brand new 2022 Macbook Air with M2 chip, this bleeding edge laptop comes with an extraordinary 1080p webcam, right out of the box. By harnessing commonplace technology that was released 10 years ago, no configuration necessary. It's magic!

How long till it weakens the hinge so you have to run back to Apple for them to repair something that they broke.
I dont think my m1 macbook hinge is that strong to hold an iphone pro max
considering people hang extra monitors off their macbooks and are fine, probably a long long time
Lol
3… maybe 4…
Apple would probably try and sell you a replacement because hinge can't be fixed.

The camera sensors on iPhone are just a lot larger than what is possible to put in the thin display area of a MacBook.
Won’t the weight of the camera put strain on the hinges of the MacBook in time
It will, I guess a better alternative is a good tripod
Sure, Desk view is cool, BUT consider the WEIGHT of the phone on your laptop screen. What if someone uses a 12/13/14 max phone and case, and then that clip thing? Wouldn't that be a little top heavy?
