The dell slim notebook I'm using right now is only slightly better in terms of user experience. It's faster, but the modern web is more demanding anyway.
VAIOs of that era were often impressive technical feats - especially anything from their "Z" lineup. Their spec sheets read like impossible wishlists, and the implementation was always quite impressive.
The envelope is a prime example of Steve's superb showmanship. I'm sure lots of people creamed their pants when he took the MacBook Air out of the envelope. lol

This presentation literally changed the history of laptop engineering. We finally got light, thin, beautiful and powerful. Next step was when the battery became so good it could work up to 12 hours. I bought my first Air in 2014, cost a fortune. Worth every penny.
I bought in the 2014 too and it's still working fine. With battery replaced once, with daily almost 6-7 hours of usage, may be more than that for last almost 9 years.

My Macbook Air2020 still works like a champ at 3 yrs with just short battery for now about, 5-6 hours since I use it for work, but it rarely hangs on me or shut down. I remember watching this live and being blown away. Any time Steve was doing a keynote, you knew you were in for a treat. Tim's cool, but no match for Steve's showmanship. The little things, like taking the iPod out of his pocket, or the MacBook Air out of an envelope, really sent the audience for a ride.
It's 2021 and almost the same exact design is instantly recognisable and still more than fits the mean in most environments. In the world of tech this truely was unprecedented. Like I'm sure you could nitpick bits like the HDD inside and the resolution (but really 1280x800 ain't too bad), and of course the performance envelope has some way to go, but that is quite honestly to be expected. Yet you could put this 13 year old laptop in front of just about anyone today and maybe it wouldn't be the most cutting edge, but it would still look/feel like a relatively modern sleek and slim design; I just can't imagine that for any other tech product over a similar period of time. Apple are famous for what they did with the PC, the iPod, the Smart Phone etc. but what they did with the UltraBook has to be their most underrated accomplishment; there are still elements of this design/product that current laptop manufacturers are working towards, more than a decade later. Not to drag on too much but imagine picking up and maybe even having to use this for a bit today in 2021 and compare that to picking up a laptop from 2002 in 2015, or even a laptop from 1997 in 2010.

I really like going back to this kinds of presentations every once in a while. Really makes you see how much apple used to innovate and use that as their ace as opposed to now where they literally are just pricey because of brand name.

Can’t remember the last time Tim Cook talked us through a product on stage with such passion

I'm not really sold on the iPhones. Still use a Samsung Android. But Macbooks really are worth every penny. My macbook pro makes work a breeze, without the fear of crashing and the infamous "blue screen" error

But IBM or Dell well Steve did like to roast them alot but time as quite change with the rise of the xps series from Dell for exemple.

because in 2008 an 80GB SSD drive was $595. Today, you can buy a 1TB SSD drive for $100 or less.

The first gen Air was terrible full of bugs. It was only the next redesign (the models with the 11 and 13 inchers) that Apple perfected the Air.
Days when Apple compared their product with other company products to show how better theirs are. Nowadays, they compare their own old products to showcase how their new version are better than them.

After update it runs constantly at 3.3ghz clock during heavy workload and only 93 degrees celsius. It is really poweful machine. With egpu comparable to old tower mac pro.

I remember watching this live and being blown away. Any time Steve was doing a keynote, you knew you were in for a treat. Tim's cool, but no match for Steve's showmanship. The little things, like taking the iPod out of his pocket, or the MacBook Air out of an envelope, really sent the audience for a ride.

It's 2021 and almost the same exact design is instantly recognisable and still more than fits the mean in most environments. In the world of tech this truely was unprecedented.
Like I'm sure you could nitpick bits like the HDD inside and the resolution (but really 1280x800 ain't too bad), and of course the performance envelope has some way to go, but that is quite honestly to be expected. Yet you could put this 13 year old laptop in front of just about anyone today and maybe it wouldn't be the most cutting edge, but it would still look/feel like a relatively modern sleek and slim design; I just can't imagine that for any other tech product over a similar period of time.
Apple are famous for what they did with the PC, the iPod, the Smart Phone etc. but what they did with the UltraBook has to be their most underrated accomplishment; there are still elements of this design/product that current laptop manufacturers are working towards, more than a decade later.
Not to drag on too much but imagine picking up and maybe even having to use this for a bit today in 2021 and compare that to picking up a laptop from 2002 in 2015, or even a laptop from 1997 in 2010.
I'm buying a macbook air in 2018 now, at the 10th anniversary, coz I can afford it now. I am amazed how ahead apple under Steve Jobs was, 10 years earlier!

I really like going back to this kinds of presentations every once in a while. Really makes you see how much apple used to innovate and use that as their ace as opposed to now where they literally are just pricey because of brand name.

Not as bright as the pro tho but still great! The MacBook Air is just as powerful as the pro now!! Not as underpowered as the original one
