Holy sheet.......look at the height of those guard rails!!! I live in Michigan where he have the Mackinaw Bridge - 5-mile long suspensio bridge 200-foot above the water. Years ago a lady in a tiny compact car literally got blown off the thing in some high winds. No way could I drive across this thing. Bridges have always bothered me and it's gotten worse as I've gotten older.

There should be an exit ramp for people with acrophobia to avoid the ridiculous height of that bridge.
Acrophobia is not a laughing matter.

In Maryland People make money driving other people's vehicles across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge because they are too scared. Now THAT is an easy job.

I drove across that bridge many years ago. It was pouring down and I had a panic attack. Never do that again 😢

I remember when I first saw that bridge back in 2001 from the distance and I was like hell no let me turn around. Kept going. This video doesn’t really do it justice.

Oh god I have fear of heights and had to cross a bridge like that over the Mississippi from Illinois to St. Louis. It kept going up and up and up and when I got near the top I couldn't see down the other side, it looked like I was going to be launched out into open air. I put my flashers on and slowed to a crawl, annoying all the other drivers that were flying past at 80mph haha but I didn't care. It was just so scary.

Don’t blame you. I would have slowed to a crawl also.

Unfortunately video doesn't capture the full effect of the steep height of the bridge. You feel it in your body, not unlike a steep roller coaster drop and at the top viewing nothing but sky on incline. I'm 66 and have had nightmares about crossing this bridge since I was a kid.

Fifty two years old here and we used to traverse this bridge on a Simi regular basis. I too had nightmares about this bridge. Mostly crossing it by foot and instead of pavement, it was decked with rotting boards. (Many of which were missing)
Remember how those two lanes were once "two way traffic"?
The newer sister bridge opened the older bridge up to one way traffic.
I remember my mom once reading in the paper how the Rainbow Bridge was going through safety inspections and (half jokingly) stated that "it was probably a guy in a flat-bottom boat, tapping the legs with a hammer to see if they sounded right. "

@@Pynaegan As an adult the husband and I would occasionally go over this bridge (though I begged him not to) and I still had anxiety attacks because he was driving a standard truck--in traffic--on this incline. I now live in a small town on outskirts of Seattle. I've been a passenger with friends driving in Seattle after ferrying across and have to say that getting off the ferry to get on I-5 they have to drive up some very steep hills, reminding me of Rainbow. I have never driven in Seattle, never will. Yes, I remember the two way traffic before the sister bridge. 🤥

    • @tsntana
      @tsntana 9 днів тому

Yeah, I think other than the height, you have 2 lanes without any shoulders. On one side, you have traffic, and on the other, you have a guard rail and visible increasing height. It can be anxiety inducing.

The bridge city bridge was the only way in and out of town.. Janis Joplin and her friends use to climb below the rainbow bridge and hangout.

No not really... Maybe a foot taller. That 1 there isn't as much panic as this one is.
But it's still scary especially when you're looking across that the other bridges supports. Almost makes you think you're in an airplane or something

For maximum effect you have to go across during a squall while pulling an empty 53' dry box....buckle up. Besides, it has a solid road deck unlike a lot of causeways. No wind whistling up from below the vehicle.
