      Thank you Scott, you have reminded me of a few things I have been doing wrong which I wasn't even a few weeks ago! I think it is great that you do informative videos even if it goes over old material as it were. it is very helpful, people are very forgetful at times and it is easy to slip into bad habits without realising and things like this are a great resource to help combat that.

      When you are juicing as much as him you are most likely lifting much heavier weights which will put more stress on the body. another problem is most of these dudes will still continue to train super heavy even when in a calorie deficit to shred bodyfat. The juice gives them the strength to continue to train heavy but when you are calorie depleted your tendons and muscles are more easily injured.

      you say that now, until your luck runs out and you have to explain to the ER doctor reconstructing your Sternum and top 4 rips that "i thought i had enough power left, but i was wrong!" How do i know? I have been there.. spent 6 months not being able to touch a upper body lift because of my broken ribs. Doctors said i was damn lucky i didnt damage or crush my lungs or worse, my heart.

    Just finished my first month of gym, 4 days a week. It was an amazing experience. I was ill for 6 years and wasn't allowed to train and I've always wanted to since I was an athlete when he as around 10-13. It feel so great. Anyone who hasn't started, just try it. Dude, I've been watching your vids on main compound excercises and the mistakes you see people make.
    I must say, you produce very informative, clear instructions and I think this will help a lot of people who don't know what they're doing.
    I came across topics about flaring etc, and they were always confusing. This cleared it up 100% for me and you've probably saved my rotator cuffs from future injuries.
    Keep it up man!

    ScottHermanFitness thank you for this video. I bench pressed incorrectly for more than 25 years. My mistake was not retracting shoulders with elbows flared up.
    I’m a natural body builder, 40yrs old 5’8” 210lbs completely ripped and I wouldn’t listened to you 5 months ago.
    However, my shoulder separated and I developed a bone spur on my clavicle. To be honest I went to the doctor just to get the clavicle injected with cortisone as I never noticed any pain from shoulder separation.
    I went to surgery to get the spur removed and to my surprise the doctor also did rotator cuff surgery. The day before surgery I was bench pressing 365lbs , 315lbs , 225lbs etc...
    5 months after surgery I’m bench pressing 115 lbs similar to the proper technique due to shoulder pain movement restriction and this video explains me the why. I will incorporate these learnings to my next chest workout.
    Thanks for all the tips. I have subscribed to your channel and clicked the notification bell.
    Btw. Please excuse my english grammar as it is my second language.

    Thanks for posting this. Definitely saw some errors I've been making in my bench. 2 questions, I'm really out of shape and I'm getting back into the gym working out with my 12 year old son. We are using a basketball work out program i found online since my son wants to play basketball for his school. 1st question, being out of shape I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out what weight to lift. Should i start out light and slowly build up, The other day was our first bench day. We did 3 sets, 10 reps each set. I started with 110pnds, then lowered to 95, then finished with 80pnds. My chest is feeling plenty sore now from it. Should i go up next chest day? 2nd question, my son is 12. he's in excellent shape, but never really lifted before. He also did 3 sets 10 reps each starting with just the bar, then moved to the bar plus 5pnds, then the bar plus 10pnds totaling 55pnds. Is this OK, I'm concerned that he will hurt himself pushing too much weight before he should. Any advise on these would be awesome. thanks

    • @raynguyen1730
      @raynguyen1730 8 років тому

      Personally, I feel as though 12 might be a bit earlier for a guy to start lifting but if your son eats enough and has sufficient sleep between each workout it shouldn't be a problem. You should also advise him not to go too heavy as his body is most likely not used to the weight and it might his growth or cause some joint injuries or muscle tears.

    • @raynguyen1730
      @raynguyen1730 8 років тому

      +Ray Nguyen *stunt his growth.

    • @TheMarkBoyd
      @TheMarkBoyd 8 років тому

      He's 135lbs and 5'8 tall. he's a big guy for 12yrs of age. I tend to agree about not lifting too much weight. I dont want him to get too big, were only doing this program to get him in playing shape for middle school basketball. I want him to have a lean but strong and healthy body. Thanks for the advise.

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  8 років тому +4

      Stunting growth is a Myth.. the only thing that will stunt his grow is lack of nutrition. Everyone complains about "growth plates". you run a MUCH higher risk of damaging them playing football than lifting with proper form in the gym

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  8 років тому +5

      So awesome you are training with your son. I bet he is loving it! Dad of the year for sure :-D As for you.. just take it easy. Lift moderate weight for rep ranges. This way you can get used to lifting again and wont be sore as heel for a month from the firstworkout. After about 2 - 3 weeks of "going through the motions" with proper form you will be able to start pushing yourself harder. If you want us to look at your program you can post on our site for more help www.MuscularStrength.com.
      Just make sure you son is eating A LOT.. he is young and needs his calories to grow, plenty of sleep too!

    Thanks, I am one of those "stop a few inches above my chest" kind of guys. I was told to do that by a powerlifter body many years ago to avoid shoulder injuries, but I noticed the same thing that you did, which is that I didn't have the power when I tried the full way. I'll work on that on my next chest day with lower weight to see if I can build that. Thanks!

    I have such attachments, my body has no reason to activate my chest. Because it can bench press with my triceps and shoulders, and it can incline press with my shoulders. I'm fucked, only exercise I can feel is cable flys and decline plate loaded machine which doesn't exist in my current gym.

    That first one, I tried to make sure I was in the right position with the shoulders retracted. The difference is immediate. I had no idea I was doing it wrong for so long, haha. Most fitness youtubers wouldn't even bring it up.

    You know your shit. Your reasons of why the different forms are bad are spot on.
    What do you think about close grip bench pressing, with the bar or dumbbells? I tend to use dumbbells and keep the together throughout the range of motion.

    great video Scott! I once was asked to spot a man at my gym flat benching 100lb dumbells. The asshole made ME do the majority of the work and didn't even complete a single repetition. I confronted him about it and he said, and i quote, "that's what a spotter is for."

    yeah I wish UA-cam had been a thing when I first started benching. a lot of elbows flaring, grip too wide, benching over my shoulders, not using my triceps, people saying the bottom of the rep can cause shoulder damage, all this bullshit. great video Scott, saving people's rotator cuffs one tip at a time haha
