      ScottHermanFitness I have weight training class in my school and we have 3 people in each group and The coaches put a timer for like 45 seconds and 45 seconds for each person so when we are doing squats i go than when im done than the other guy goes and i just rest 45 seconds o 1 minute is that good?

      You do'n't want to rest between reps, but rest 2-4 minutes between set to loosen muscles.This helps reenergize your muscles so you can do more without losing quality.

    Hey Scott, I'm new to your UA-cam channel, and I gotta say I'm really enjoying your content, finally someone who's not Only natty, but truly knows his stuff, who can also articulate it to us average guys... That said, my question is can I do push, pull legs with only dumbbells? I'm a beginner, and eventually when I know what I'm doing I'll join a gym, to have access to more equipment. I have a set of 90's selectTec dumbbells, a multi position bench, and a pull up/dip/push-up station. THANK YOU, for doing what you're doing, and keep up the great content!

  • @JimmieABES
    @JimmieABES 8 років тому +8

    I've read studies that have shown that optimal muscle activation is achieved only once the hips go below the knees, because once you go past this point, you're only increasing the amount of knee flexion in relation to hip extension...I don't think it's necessary to always squat ATG, only hips below the knees. Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but that's what I've read. Great video though, Scott!

    • @BeyondPrideMF
      @BeyondPrideMF 8 років тому

      i think so too! and stopping at 90 degrees will not only put less strain on your knees, it also makes the movement more controlled if you stop! a lot of people just dive-bomb the squat and bounce out of the hole, making the lift easier actually...

    • @emZee1994
      @emZee1994 8 років тому +8

      +Semper Fidelis there are multiple studies which show stopping at 90 degrees adds more strain to the Knees. ass to grass is optimal for people who have the mobilty to do it

    • @BeyondPrideMF
      @BeyondPrideMF 8 років тому

      Emir EC Haha funny, everyone says something different >.< my friend is a sport student and told me they had learned in uni that going below is unnecessary strain :DD

    • @irondisciple2984
      @irondisciple2984 8 років тому

      you get more musle activation from stopping just below 90 degrees because your legs are always in time under tension when you squat ATG your hamstrings touch your calves and legs lose tension. muscles under tension is best for for growth.

    • @irondisciple2984
      @irondisciple2984 8 років тому

      but you recruit more muscle fibers while going atg. which means helping extend your quadz trough out your leg since your quadz are getting fully stretched out. full range of motion recuits the most muscle fibers. and parallel squatting benefits more your glutes and hams, atg does more quadz and glutes.

    That A2G stretch at 3:35 is MONEY for learning the proper form for the lift, imo. Tried it, dropped quite a bit of weight from my previous squat starting weights, and PRESTO!! I'm now squatting A2G for reals, and have felt a big difference in the muscles recruited the next day, especially the glutes.

  • @striker-mcgurk

    Thank you very much. I'll keep on practising. Even with light weights doing Squads always make me lean forward when coming down... it's so hard to get back up like this. Especially if your lower back gets involved and starts to hurt after a few reps. I'm not being flexible enough to come down deep and keep my back straight...

      Yea but it's hard to teach noobs the low bar squat. You will naturally fold over more with a lowbar (most people) and if you don't have proper control of your lumbar, your hips, abdominal pressure, etc.. It's hard to get a noob (which I'm assuming there're a lot of watching this channel) to really learn it correctly. But I agree a lot of people would benefit from the lowbar squat

    Scott, you're my fucking motivation man. I've been following your channel for four or five years now. This year was really hard for me, because i had to go through chemo therapy and i lost a large amount of weight. Especially muscle, which made me drop 186. I'm 6'5", so you can understand that's not a comfortable weight to be at. After my session with chemo, I started working out again at the beginning of April and have gained lean muscle, i now weigh 210 and can bench, and deadlift 225. I'm also at a comfortable fat percentage of 10 percent. All in all you've been the the push i needed to get myself as fit and active as i can be. Thank you for all that you do. It mean a grand some to a hermanite like myself.

    I thought people have proven that atg and extreme bottomed out squats put very unnecessary stress on your knees???

    • @momoflipMwvids
      @momoflipMwvids 8 років тому +1

      I really don't think it's crucial to do atg squats although i do believe they're more efficient. the problem i believe is that when you tell someone to do parallel squats or 90 degrees they usually go much higher(99% of the time literally)

    • @cdaddy145
      @cdaddy145 8 років тому +1

      i actually heard the opposite about atg squats i heard stopping at 90 or a little below puts the uneccessary tension on... but going atg takes all the tension off your knees.

    • @momoflipMwvids
      @momoflipMwvids 8 років тому +1

      +cdaddy145 that's pretty true alan thrall has a video on this where he talks about atg vs powerlifting squats. in powerlifting squats you maintain tightness in the quads the whole time while in atg squats you lose tightness in the quads and the load is transfered more towards your hamstrings(it's very noticable in his video just look it up). really I think it's down to personal preference. although power lifting squats may not build as much muscle they won't make it impossible to progress just make sure you actually go 90 degrees or more. I've heard from most people that parallel squats hurt their knees and for others atg does so it depends but i've heard worse things about parallel

      +Momo Flip yeah now i remember alan is where i heard it from :)

    • @heftygainz
      @heftygainz 8 років тому

      Yeah that's whet i was wondering. I couldn't remember where i heard it but i always thought burying a squat wasn't the best idea long term. Obviously quarter squatting is an awful idea but i thought parallel or a little below was optimal

  • @donrob7779

    Had to come back and say thanks for this one. I was always squatting leading with the head and not the chest, and in my efforts to keep my head up as high as possible I was bending over to far back causing lower back pain

    No, deep squats are not advised for people with long femurs. Period. This is science. This guy is good, but look at his proportions: short femurs, long back. Completely different ballgame.

      It's harder, and you may need more flexibility, but that's not true. It's just not the most advantageous biomechanics for the lift.

    Scott I've been watching your videos for so long (since your early blue shorts days lol) and still to this day I learn from your channel.
    I'd like to bring up 2 points: body proportion and ankle flexibility.
    -I have a long upper body, I easily put my entire palm on the ground with barely any hamstring stretch. This means extra weight behind my center of mass when squatting so I often find myself falling backwards if I try to keep proper form (even with no weight) or my heels lift off the ground. Solution for this is the next point: ankle flexibility.
    -I rolled both ankles playing badminton over the past years so I had a very hard time bringing my knee forward without my heel going up, I can't emphasize how much ankle stretches have helped me with squats this far. I can now get my knee about even to my toes without lifting my ankle.
    I still squat with the smith machine and try to disregard all the laughing for now since I workout solo and am not confident enough that I won't fall backwards, but it's videos like these that are getting me closer to the real squat rack every day. I think I speak for many when I say thank you for everything!!!

    Really good breakdown for squat technique and accessory like mobility, stretches, etc.. Especially liked the stress of holding your breath through out the movement. I've actually found squats to be a really great lung builder when done properly because of this. Not to mention the stress on depth. I'd say that 90% of the people I see actually doing non Smith machine barbel squats in gyms only get to 3/4 depth tops. When I actually see someone go below parallel, I always give them props after.
