Top tier Dylan here. BTW - this song is not necessarily narrated linearly 😉 I suggest Bob Dylan - Things Have Changed, Shelter From The Storm, Visions Of Johanna & It's All Over Now Baby Blue
One of my four all time time favorite songs. Other singers need catchy hooks to make their songs popular. Not Dylan. He had talent. He can make a song great, without a hook.
Ace, your observation about teenagers' "short attention span" is astute, if not sad. I thankfully grew up with geniuses like Dylan, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and The Who, whose storytellingsongs rewarded listeners who had a long attention span.
Dylan was a master songwriter and composer, with some of the most profound lyrics you could ever imagine. He isn't considered great because of his off-key voice (like Johnny Cash was) but the message that's always in his songs. An icon in the true sense of the word.
"Serve Somebody", from 1979, is a great song, not too preachy. He converted to Christianity for a while and recorded a legendary album called Blood on the Tracks.
Only musician , songwriter to win Nobel Peace Prize...in Literature. ❤👍
Great song -
Just about the best of his songs in my opinion. Great to hear.
Take the word “his” out, and I will agree.
This was one of the best songs, ever.
The part about dealing with slaves was almost certainly referring to his fascination with Arthur Rimbaud
I’ve been listening to Dylan for 40 years and still pick up new meanings - it never ends
gives me fond, but sad, memories. a love lost back when that came out in the 70's.
"Like a rolling stone" famous song.
If you continue to listen to Dylan....you'll have a lot to look forward to!
Dylan is one of those artists that you either love or hate.
I could say that about anyone..
And I can't think of one reason to hate Dylan.
I second shelter from the storm and simple twist of fate. He wrote a few hundred other great songs also.

Dylan is the master songwriter storyteller!

“Is” a master songwriter.
for a good story song try "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts"
Actually, it's called "Generation Airhead", but that's another discussion. Great song from a great album! Harmonica, by the way.
What's a little tricky about understanding this song is that each verse is about someone different.
Like characters in a painting.
True, except maybe the woman in the first and last stanza is the same.
Close, it's a harmonica.
One of my favorite Dylan albums. Not a bad song on it.
It's a harmonica not an accordian.
"Serve Somebody", from 1979, is a great song, not too preachy. He converted to Christianity for a while and recorded a legendary album called Blood on the Tracks.
Agree to “you gotta serve somebody”
I would think hip-hop and rappers would like dylan because of lyricism. Are we beyond hip-hop and rappers? Arethey dated already?
Good reaction but that was a harmonica, not an accordion.
Not pretty nice, it is among his best combo of music and narration!
Dylan can be hard to understand. Great artist though!
