Yeah this is the original song. Linda Perry is a great songwriter and you will definitely have heard plenty of her songs that she's written for other artists such as Pink, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Celine Dion, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Osbourne and Alicia Keys. She's a Legend
With 1.3 Billion views, one should come to the conclusion that this song is a timeless classic, and will be enjoyed by future generations long after we are gone, and as long as there are folks around to hear it...It's called STAYING POWER!!
This song was released in 1992 and I've never gotten tired of hearing it. Linda Perry has such a unique beauty and her smile makes me wish that I knew her. The song is kind of perfect in the sense that it has just enough of everything. It's beautifully carried by Perry's vocal dynamics, which are precise and deliberate. Good reaction, y'all!
It IS an anthem. Here in the Philippines, at least it is. :D I've gone on public commute many times and if this plays on the radio, most people start singing or humming along. :)
Man this chick has pipes, love the song. I'm listening to music 60 years i compare her to Janis Joplin, Anne Wilson of Heart and Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane. Incredible performance. I heard it before but that kind of song i don't tire of.
I never knew why she was not a star as a performer on her own, I mean she has written for everyone and is brilliant -- She is up there with Dolly Pardon , yet I do not know if they even had another album
As an 80's metal guy, I had this 45 and Edie Brickell "What I am." Edie plays one of the best bass grooves of the 80's in that and her voice is great. You should chk that out.
Linda Perry is phenomenal singer and song writer. She has written songs for some very famous singers. She is now happily married to Sarah Gilbert from the famous sitcom Rosanne and the view. What a phenomenal voice.
Linda Perry is a genius songwriter!! She has written hits for many artists and her talent is amazing. If you've ever watched the TV talk show The Talk, she was married to host Sara Gilbert and appeared on there many times. Her catalog of musical accomplishments is amazing!🎶🎵🎶
My best friend passed about ten tears ago and this was her song so whenever I hear it I get the fuzzy warms! Great reaction. Rest peacefully, until we meet again, Gaetana!
I think this song had been out for about a decade before I first heard it. It immediately became one of my favorites, and remains so. Something about it still makes my eyes tear up.
The great Linda Perry, She is a Grammy winner...she also a Grammy winner for being a song writer. She has wrote music for Pink, Christina Aguilera, KELLY Clarkson, Many more. She won Grammys for her extraordinary song writing for other artist. But before all that, she was a hugely popular music artist of her own right in the early 1990's. (What's Going On! )Song was so huge in 1992 and play continually all over the place. This song was all over and everywhere, played on the radio all the time, and the music video was on MTV & VH1 all the time. Her album went platinum and she won many awards including Grammys. It's a classic.
A legendary song by a legendary band with a legendary front woman! Linda Perry with her incredible voice gives me personally (to a certain degree) some kind of Janis Joplin vibe.
I was 22 in 1992, everybody loved them back then. Sadly breaking up in '94. Wanda May the drummer passed away in 1997 I think. Linda still writes beautifully and has written several hits for other artists. And at 53 years old, I can say it's one of the greatest songs of all time that appeals to all genres and their listeners. And with 1.4 billion views, I am obviously not the only one that feels like this.
Wonderful smile from Asia all the way through! Rightfully so, this song can only make you go outside and say Yo, It's me! What do you got to throw at me world!
As they are telling you Linda Perry is a singer/songwriter. This song came out when Pink was young and it spoke to her. When Pink went to La she kept calling Linda and leaving messages. At the time Linda was in a dark reclusive destructive funk. It was a 15 minute message that got Linda's attention and she decided to work with Pink and Pink stayed with her for months. Pink's 1st hit "Let's get the Party Started" was born while Linda perked up and started life anew and now writng & producing for others.. (Pink - AKA - Alecia Moore) BTW - You want live to see the performers? Look up this Video on UA-cam - PINK & LINDA PERRY What's Up Duet - it is priceless. From the LA LGBT Center. At the end instead of singing 25 years Pink sings 19 years and Linda says "what?" I can't make out the rest except Pink says "Please write another song for me" . A Female Friday Duet. In May of 2012 Linda was on "the talk" with her new song "Letter to God". She has them in tears.
OMGOSH!! I've been jamming this song since Nov 2020. I scream it in my car driving to & from work. I'm sure that's why cars stay away from me on freeway.🤭 Crazy woman screaming to herself in her car. Lol
Thank you guys so much for doing a reaction to this song!! This was one of my sister's favorite songs and we used to sing and play it together ❤ She passed away 10 years ago and I miss her every single day! But hearing this song again and watching you as you listened and watched with a newfound love and respect for the music made me feel closer to her again! So thank you for that!! It was just what I needed!! ❤💜💙
Yes, it is there song 🎶 the lead singer, Linda Perry wrote this song when she was 24! She has wrote a lot of hits for other artists, look her up! This is a great song 🎶 Marvin Gaye wrote a song called What’s Going On and in this song that is what they say but Linda didn’t want it to get confused with his song so she titled it What’s Up even though she never sings those words in her song, hope this helps!
Linda Perry is an absolute legend. You've heard songs performed by other artists that were written by this genius. She is a Portuguese decent. She suffered with kidney disease from childhood. She was married to Darlene from Roseanne and they share a child.
The last time I heard this song, the wife and I were in a Kmart (wrap your heads around that). I sang it loud as shit and embarrassed her so bad. I know every word. 82 baby. It was so loud lmao. This was a jam in the 90's
I remember when this song came out. We were not sure at first if it was a man or woman. Linda Perry had such a range and she fooled us. This album was being recorded during the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake
I have always loved this tune... especially since it was popular while I was a Junior in college at Chico State... I can remember a car full of women driving by me in 93' ...all singing this tune out loud, probably on their way to a party!
Yes this is their original. As mentioned below, singer Linda Perry has written songs for many famous artists. Four Non Blondes had one album and this mega hit (and a lesser hit called "Morphine and Chocolate" from the same album from circa 1992 and then Linda went back to writing songs for other artists. WHich has been a great gig for her, but it would have been nice to hear her sing more, because her voice is just amazing. So many different sounds and colors she got to her voice in this song alone.
The vinyl is awesome I picked up the album about a month ago it's one of the best albums I've heard and a long time and I think it came out in the 90s 92 is on the lp
Linda Perry is an amazing artist and she is married to tv star Sara Gilbert. This song came out when I was in high school and it was hilarious. My first job was at an amusement park. I worked in a funnel cake stand and we played music to pass the time. Me and the two other guys who worked the stand created dance performance, ances like idiots to all of the songs on the radio. People would come by just to see what we were movin to this time. Man I miss the days that were more simple when I just had to worry about having fun. This song was never done by a man.
Loved your reaction to this group. First time I heard them was back when they first came out back in 1989 and I was in love with Linda Perry's voice! You have to do their rendition of Led Zeppelin's Misty Mountain Hop, you will NOT regret it!
Oh snap! I've heard this song multiple times and always wondered who sang it. Now, I know 😅. Such a great jam! Awesome reaction y'all! Peace and love! Sending y'all positive vibes.
Linda Perry certainly is a power singer. That's maybe why some who have only heard this on the radio thinks it's a male rocker singing. That reminds me of the voice of Timi Yuro who sang the 1962 classic What's A Matter Baby(Is It Hurting You). When I first heard that I thought it was a male too.
This is the kind of song you listen to in the car with the windows down and the radio up. I was in 2nd grade when this came out and my cousin and I would always belt this out.
in 1993, they were booked to play a free show in a small park in Cincy while they were still nobodies. When the date came, the song was a hit, and 10 thousand people packed that little park.
Growing up in the 80's and 90's where I grew up and who I kicked it with, I couldn't let my homies know this was like one of my secret favorite songs. Like a guilty pleasure. :D
Asia you are not the only one that thought that I did to ! What a amazing group of ladies I was In shock years ago when a friend told me she Is the lead singer so powerful wow !
This song was massive when it was released 🔥🔥🔥. One of the members of Budakhel (Bugoy Drilon) released his own version of this a while back, but did it with a very unique “twist”. I won’t say what it is but it just makes it even better than you’d expect ✌️😄✅
this is such a great song I have been listening to it since it came out I still listen to it weekly the singer Linda is such a great writer and she still writes for herself and has done many for other popular artists (pink Lady Gaga and a few others ) her voice is just pure and sweet I kow Asia likes it lol
San Francisco Grunge Rock at its finest, hell yeah !!! I lived in SF at this time - in the Inner Sunset near Haight St. - goin to hear open mics all over The City: Tribolectric, Jammilton, Lonnie Lazar, Bryan Harrison Band -- I love ya'all
If you are wondering about the dichotomy between the song and the title, they were not allowed to use the phrase “what’s going on” as title, so they used “what’s up” instead.
I first heard this at a Detroit Red Wings game. When ever they called a penalty on the Wings they would play "hey what's going on" part of it. Never found out who actually sang it till a few years later. Great song.
I REALLY miss the loss of the female singer-song writers that were so big in the '90s. I mean, they're certainly still out there, but this '90s style just seems to have gotten lost with the rest of '90s alternative. It's SO damn good too, we really need more of this. And, the best part, when they sang rock, they didn't try to sound like a dude! They just sounded like them!
I was 13 when I first heard this song back in the mid-90s(?). At 25, I sang the first line with more meaning. At 43 now, I still sing this song, but I change the it to "Forty-three years and my life is still..."
This is one of those songs that is like Bohemian Rhapsody... you can probably just start singing it randomly anywhere and have at least a few people join in lol
Was at a bar in Pittsburgh, drinking beers listening to some random live band when they stopped and said someone in the audience wanted to sing a little song. It was Linda Perry and totally crushed this song out. The place went nuts. She owned that bar that night.
Linda Perry is a successful singer and producer. Her voice is her signature call to arms. I feel like Asia needs an injection of Joan Jett delivering her powerhouse vocals to DO YOU WANNA TOUCH ME ( OH, YEAH ). You should also give the Pretenders a listen on their punishing single, MIDDLE OF THE ROAD and the popular MY CITY WAS GONE. Strong women leading the charge and sounding great doing it.
It's the original (: The singers name is Linda Perry (: she was and probably will always be one of the great goat singers ever (:. But now she one of the greatest goat producers ever (:. She's a Goat PERIOD (:.
Dude linda perry might be the most underrated song writers of her era. Shes written…idk hundreds of songs for other well known performers! Like literarily hundreds!
This is absolutely the original. But its seen many covers and remixes (especially dance mixes) over the years. And one particular early internet video of a remix set to scenes from HeMan remains a classic, and was passed around a LOT. So its no surprise you've heard some version of this before, even if not the original
Linda Perry wrote “Beautiful” for Christina Aguilera and “Get the Party Started” for Pink. She is a well known song writer and this song is hers.
Also wrote for Beyoncé and Adele

And it cane out when I was 15 ❤ what a time to be a teenager!
This qualifies as an Anthem. Such a great song.
Absolutely ✌🏽
It IS an anthem. Here in the Philippines, at least it is. :D I've gone on public commute many times and if this plays on the radio, most people start singing or humming along. :)
This became a HUGE anthem for the LGTBQ community. HUGE.
It's an anthem for anyone who's ever felt like they didn't fit in or belong
Definitely my anthem, still! ❤️❤️
This was one of their biggest hits and Linda Perry's vocals are off the chain love it

YES!
“Shove me in the shallow water before I get too deep.”
Yes please Edie Brickell (a.k.a. Mrs. Paul Simon!) and new Bohemians! “What I Am.”
In my opinion one of the best songs ever with that singer. I just wanna step outside on my balcony and scream: "What's going on?!"
I'd rather scream I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it no more. Aahaha😂 Actually I love the song.
If my voice was a fraction of good I would be singing this outside on my balcony every morning too lol
Wonderful to see you appreciate this underrated song! Her voice is pure magic
Linda Perry is phenomenal singer and song writer. She has written songs for some very famous singers. She is now happily married to Sarah Gilbert from the famous sitcom Rosanne and the view. What a phenomenal voice.
When this song came out I was dj'n in Las Vegas and this was our most requested song, that was 92, still a road trip fav...

Linda Perry does great covers of Led Zeppelin songs. I have seen interviews about her life story and about how the band was formed.
Linda Perry has such a powerful voice, it just demands respect.
Outstanding song ! Outstanding voice ! She has a 1969 Woodstock look with a knockout voice range !
Always in my set list. Is a wonderful feel good song! Her voice is simply amazing and dynamic range!

Aaron Lewis, lead singer of Staind, does a kick ass cover of it! Solo, acoustic cover

One hit wonders. What an amazing hit. Linda Perry’s vocal magic integrates perfect with the melody the 3 very lucky non blondes layed down.
1994, cycling to high school, with a huge diskman in my pocket. It was heavy, no where near shockproof and ate batteries.
I miss the 90's.
Very cool watching y'all vibe out to this song. 🎶🎧
The vinyl is awesome I picked up the album about a month ago it's one of the best albums I've heard and a long time and I think it came out in the 90s 92 is on the lp
This song in the “the louder the better”
Hall of Fame.
We need another 4 Non Blondes and didn’t know it. Their group name alone is what we need!
One of my favorite female singer rocker song writers of all time. And I must not leave out the band. Fantastic! And what the hell is goin on? Love it!

Calling all 90s kids 👏👏👏 this song comes and and I immediately know exactly what this wonderful gem is
So many memories it brings back too. Good bad, wild, boring. I love nostalgia.
4 Non Blondes is the original group. Everyone else you have heard is covering them. Gotta say that Pink does a really good cover
What I love about watching music reactions is the unity it brings. It doesn’t matter your gender, race or age, good music is just good good music.
Linda Perry is a genius! Her solo album is amazing front to back. Listen to her solo ‘knock me out’
in 1993, they were booked to play a free show in a small park in Cincy while they were still nobodies. When the date came, the song was a hit, and 10 thousand people packed that little park.
Growing up in the 80's and 90's where I grew up and who I kicked it with, I couldn't let my homies know this was like one of my secret favorite songs. Like a guilty pleasure. :D
This song was an anthem in 1992 along with I Would Do Anything For Love by Meatloaf. They were played on the radio like every 20 minutes.
Asia you are not the only one that thought that I did to ! What a amazing group of ladies I was In shock years ago when a friend told me she Is the lead singer so powerful wow !
Classic tune with the classic message and it still holds up today. Linda Perry does some gymnastics with her voice doesn't she
One of my favorite jams... awsome watching u guys appreciate it... this is definitely an original
I don't remember her name but she's one of the best songwriters out there today. She helped and wrote songs with PINK on at least one of her albums.
This song was massive when it was released 🔥🔥🔥. One of the members of Budakhel (Bugoy Drilon) released his own version of this a while back, but did it with a very unique “twist”. I won’t say what it is but it just makes it even better than you’d expect ✌️😄✅

This is the original song and the original mv.
So 90ies, give me me a time machine. ;)
Btw. thanks for your good reactions in total.

She is a beautiful genius.
From their 1992 album, this song is written by the singer, Linda Perry.
Linda Perry (lead singer) was married to Sara Gilbert who played Darlene on The Roseanne Barr show...
This and "Bitch", by Meredith Brooks, are my favorite "feminist" songs.
I'm a guy, btw
Also K's Choice - I'm Not An Addict
Another one is Oh Bondage - Up Yours, by X-Ray Spex
Me too (being guy) but I think Cindy Lauper with "Girls wanna have fun" alsofit's to your list ;-)....
I love love love Meredith Brooks!
Bitch is one of my all time favorites.

That song it's beautiful. Thanks for reacting.
This is absolutely the original. But its seen many covers and remixes (especially dance mixes) over the years. And one particular early internet video of a remix set to scenes from HeMan remains a classic, and was passed around a LOT. So its no surprise you've heard some version of this before, even if not the original
That song was rent money for me in college. I can sing it to this day.
You guys really need to look into Linda Perry, she has written a lot of really good songs. With Pink and Christina Aguilera.
